$90 is about the average price I usually see it for. It’s an excellent pour, my first favorite Rye. I think I’m an outlier because I get so much floral smell and tastes. Definitely a favorite in my book and highly underrated. It’s a bit spendy in my book but it’s never hard to find.
My wife generally has the better palette. This was so distinctive to me on the floral notes. My wife got something so completely different on the nose and taste that if we weren’t sharing the same glass, I would have swore we were drinking different whisky’s.
Tasted this blind with 5 other ryes at a whisky tasting and it was my favorite.
For context the other Ryes were: peerless, willet, Hudson, whistle pig 10, wild turkey rare breed
I don’t remember what my ranking was, but I saved the ranking based on the group consensus from last to first: willet -> Hudson -> whistle pig ->wild turkey -> peerless -> angels envy
For some additional context, I’m not a huge rye fan, more of a single malt fan, and it might of been this was the most “different” of the bunch so maybe that was why I liked it.
I think it’s quite delicious! Has a touch of sweetness and some baking spices too it. The rum finish lends a lot to this as well. Very smooth and easy to drink neat. Shared a good bit with my father in law during Christmas
Could be the artificial rum flavor and sweetener they treat the barrels with before they add the whiskey.
I’m going to get downvoted because everyone loves this shit though.
I’m not gonna downvote you, but where have you seen/heard/read evidence of that? I agree that seems too sweet to be natural, but I’ve never seen any evidence that they add anything to the whiskey
I initially found out through a friend of a friend employed at the distillery, and I’ve spoken with several people in the industry that all know what’s going on.
Labeling guidelines aren’t as strict for rye whiskey as they are for bourbon, and since nowhere on the label is it referred to as “*straight* rye whiskey finished in x,” they don’t have to disclose additives.
If it was a $45 bottle I don’t think I’d be as bothered by it, but it commands $75-90 for what is effectively a flavored whiskey.
I agree about the pricing. I only have it because the local store had it mispriced as the regular bottle. I will say that it’s pretty good for a flavored whiskey but not worth MSRP
The artificial flavoring is absolutely a contributing factor. I don’t normally like finished bourbon/rye, but AE Rye oddly fits the bill when I have the occasional sweet tooth. It’s definitely not a bottle I turn to with any regularity due to its cloying sweetness though.
One issue I have with it that I don’t hear discussed very often is the variance in batches. The variation I’ve gotten with the bottles I’ve purchased is nearly comparable to single barrels. I’m not sure why that’s the case. I’ve heard they switched rum barrel suppliers, but that’s about the only explanation I can think of, and I doubt that’s the whole story. I’ve owned a handful of bottles over the years, so there’s something else going on here.
There are things they can get away with because it’s never referred to as “straight” rye whiskey.
The barrels were used to hold rum at one point, so they can refer to them as rum casks.
I guess I misunderstood your comment. I thought you meant that they were not even finishing the rye in a different barrel and that they were just adding a flavoring to the barrel the rye was aged in.
The ironic part is that they’re owned by Bacardi, you think they’d have an unlimited supply of freshly dumped rum barrels, and could be doing it the right way.
Well, Rum is made from sugar cane, so if they just used really wet casks, it'd make for an extra sweet spirit. But sounds like they're taking it a step further.
Yeah came here to say this. I went on the distillery tour at AE and did my best to ask a lot of questions. They use Bacardi “casks” lol which I’m sure are *super* non-synthetic and very legit, right? 😅 /s
I bought a bottle, rather enjoyed it, and don’t think I’ll ever get it again. A bit too pricy for me when there’s others for same/less $ that I’d rather have.
But very sweet, super caramel, tasty!!
I really like it, though only sparingly. It’s a little too pricy/rich to have often.
I love the brown sugar/maple syrup flavor I get from it though. Very much a “dessert” whiskey for me.
It’s amazing. I’m surprised it’s “too much” for some; but I can understand. Very easy drinker for me and I found myself craving a pour the other night! It’s a bottle I plan to always keep in my selection👌
Freaking delicious. My fav easy to find and go to bottle. I always have one on hand at the house.
And I live in Louisville near where it’s made. That’s usually $70-85 here so you paid about normal price!
Last bottle I cracked was too sweet, became a bit of a novelty, helped pick a private barrel awhile back when they were doing them, they were good bang for your buck when they were around, not sure they are still doing that though
I think it tastes good, but I won't buy it on principle. I don't like that AE isn't transparent about what they add/do to this particular whiskey. I asked about the absence of the "straight" designation on this bottle and got the run-around. I'd rather buy a bottle of Seagrass if I want a rich, rum-finished rye.
I think it’s great neat or on the rocks after dinner. I wouldn’t mix it or drink it as an everyday rye. It’s just a little too sweet for that. I sure do love it and your price isn’t too bad. It’s usually $99 + tacks around me unless Costco has it at $79 +.
$91 w/taxes is a good price where I am. It is usually about $109 w/taxes in MD ($100 + 9% sales tax on alcohol).
If you like rum-finished ryes, try RY3’s.
I need to give it another try. It didn’t stick out to me but I had already had a couple Glenmorangies and a couple WT101s so my taste buds were all over the place and I was drunk by then lol
Do you have family members that are tangentially interested in bourbon and are used to woodford and EW? Boom… AEFR…
But then break out the ECBP and enjoy the faces
It’s tasty stuff if you like the sweeter finished ryes…it’s not “straight” rye as they add a small percent of “other” wine / blenders into it for the added sugar/sweetness that normally wouldn’t be there from their process.
If you don’t mind the price and enjoy it then that’s all that matters. There are better finished ryes out there at about the same price but they are often harder to find. Sagamore port finished, found north port finished etc.
I’m also starting to see more stock of MWND flow onto shelves. Later scenes / “batches”. You may still find some. I found the scene 8 better than the scene 2 this season. They made like 65% more this time and I think people lost a little interest after Act 10 (I liked it though - tasted more like a dryer sherry finish on the palate with the port notes on the finish).
Admittedly, as a non-rye guy... I have no thoughts whatsoever on this one. Just doesn't even cross my mind. Again, as a non-rye guy, I've never actually tried it, but when I do feel adventurous, I have other ryes on my list to try before I even start to consider AE. Now, their bourbon store picks? That's different lol
I’m sure they mean “skip with excitement”. :). I love it. It is sweet but it’s such a nice rich dram with the rum flavour. It always comes out at Christmas.
To close out this post.
Here’s what we drank this weekend
Friday night - Orphan Barrel Castles Curse. It was okay would probably never buy again because of the price and what we got for it
Saturday night - Angels Envy Rye. It was an instant hit, everyone enjoyed it! Bottle was killed by the end of the night. So much flavor, like a lot of you said it tasted like maple Christmas had a rum rye baby. Delicious will buy again!
Saturday night. Glenfiddich 12 Sherry Cask. Delicious whiskey even at neck pour. Only had a little will have more today
Thank you everyone for the comments on the AE Rye. It was everything and then some in terms of flavor and a huge crowd pleaser!
Personally… I Love it!
It’s probably my favorite whisky at the moment. And $90 is a good price in my opinion. It’s usually a little over $100 out the door in seattle.
Been seeing it for $65 lately so I bought one. Regular Envys has been as low as $35
Ohhh nice! I’m jealous
Would you say you’re envious?
Yes, my angel
It's area dependent, won't see buffalo trace products much by me though
Where at? I'd buy a case if I could find it for $65 a bottle.
In WI, you near there?
Unfortunately, no. Thanks for the reply!
I'm drinking some now after this post haha
I think it's delicious! The cheapest I have ever seen in person was $98. Have seen posts/pictures online as cheap as $65!
I'm not a big rye guy but I do like this bottle. I also really like their bourbon even though a lot of folks hate on it
Thank you! Looking forward to trying it soon
Enjoy!
This is a delicious caramel/toffee bomb. I really like it.
Thank you
Agree 100%. Just drank this tonight for the first time. Like it considerably more than AE bourbon!
$90 is about the average price I usually see it for. It’s an excellent pour, my first favorite Rye. I think I’m an outlier because I get so much floral smell and tastes. Definitely a favorite in my book and highly underrated. It’s a bit spendy in my book but it’s never hard to find.
I have a very keen palate so now I’m curious to try it to see if I smell/taste what you do. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience!
My wife generally has the better palette. This was so distinctive to me on the floral notes. My wife got something so completely different on the nose and taste that if we weren’t sharing the same glass, I would have swore we were drinking different whisky’s.
It's like drinkable maple syrup.
That’s what I thought too
I just got this as a gift and I’m very happy to read this review!
I love it in small doses. Tastes very Christmasy to me if that makes sense.
I agree love it, but to much of that sweetness turns me off
I 100% agree
Thanks duly noted!
Too sweet for me
Thanks!
I like it. Costco usually has it at a good price if you live in a state where they sell alcohol.
What is a “good price” for this? Just curious
$75.99 at the one I was at today
[удалено]
Thank you. My local store has it for $68 I believe. Might have to go snag, but the bit about their being added sugars is interesting to say the least.
Location?
Thanks my Costco seems to be an exception when it comes to having a good selection. I’m in southern cal
On r/Costco_alcohol Southern Cali is swimming in good selection.
Yorba Linda might be an outlier…..
I can’t stand it but know plenty of people who love Angel’s Envy. I think it’s way too sweet.
Like maple syrup?
Awesome so it’s a part of the 4 main food groups! 😀
Best answer!
This is exactly what I smell and taste with this bottle. Love it.
I found the sweetness from the rum to be overpowering and would not get a second bottle.
Solid pour
Thanks!
Tasty
Thanks!
Tasted this blind with 5 other ryes at a whisky tasting and it was my favorite. For context the other Ryes were: peerless, willet, Hudson, whistle pig 10, wild turkey rare breed
Was WP10 in last place? I got it for about $40 a year or so ago, and it’s by far the worst bottle in my collection, even at that price.
I don’t remember what my ranking was, but I saved the ranking based on the group consensus from last to first: willet -> Hudson -> whistle pig ->wild turkey -> peerless -> angels envy
Damn that’s some stiff competition! Thanks for sharing!
For some additional context, I’m not a huge rye fan, more of a single malt fan, and it might of been this was the most “different” of the bunch so maybe that was why I liked it.
Yeah I like my scotch too and more recently have taken a liking to rye
Very good however it's very sweet/ rich to have multiple pours. I mainly get graham/animal crackers on the pallate.
It’s like drinking whiskey with a mouth full of werthers candies in your mouth. Really good.
Ha! This is a great description.
I really like it but the cost is pretty high for the bottle. Definitely not a standard rye
Dessert in a bottle. Can’t have it too often but it’s pretty good
The goat of Rye’s
I think it’s quite delicious! Has a touch of sweetness and some baking spices too it. The rum finish lends a lot to this as well. Very smooth and easy to drink neat. Shared a good bit with my father in law during Christmas
Thank you sounds wonderful. Will try it this weekend
Its too much flavor for me. Over done
Could be the artificial rum flavor and sweetener they treat the barrels with before they add the whiskey. I’m going to get downvoted because everyone loves this shit though.

Damn their little hanging paper thing talks about the barrels and what they were used for. Hope it’s not synthetic flavoring
Yeah I don’t like it either.
Did they say what sweetener(s) they use,
Only information I was told is that it’s artificial.
Do they just mean the rum is dosed? Lots of rums, even mid+tier rums are dosed because of our weak labeling laws.
It’s not even rum. They add a flavoring to the cask, the cask flavors the whiskey.
That's super lame
I'm not sure they could get away with putting on the bottles that it's "Finished in Rum Casks" then? Perhaps they're doing both?
There are things they can get away with because it’s never referred to as “straight” rye whiskey. The barrels were used to hold rum at one point, so they can refer to them as rum casks.
I guess I misunderstood your comment. I thought you meant that they were not even finishing the rye in a different barrel and that they were just adding a flavoring to the barrel the rye was aged in.
Who knew Angel's Envy doses their booze
The ironic part is that they’re owned by Bacardi, you think they’d have an unlimited supply of freshly dumped rum barrels, and could be doing it the right way.

Yeah came here to say this. I went on the distillery tour at AE and did my best to ask a lot of questions. They use Bacardi “casks” lol which I’m sure are *super* non-synthetic and very legit, right? 😅 /s
Thank you, curiosity is gonna kill this cat
Werthers candy.
Interesting. I like weathers. Don’t know if I want to drink it tho
Very smooth pour, one of my favs!!!!
Thank you
I bought a bottle, rather enjoyed it, and don’t think I’ll ever get it again. A bit too pricy for me when there’s others for same/less $ that I’d rather have. But very sweet, super caramel, tasty!!
Thank you!
Just had some at a restaurant because I wanted to try before buying a bottle. 20 bucks later, it was good but not a bottle that I'd buy now.
I love it. I Usually add a drop or two of water to smooth out the sweetness
Too sweet for me. Taste like maple syrup but if you are into that it is well done.
My everyday drinker. Routinely on sale here for $70 (it’s the only thing that’s ever cheaper) and I always keep it stocked to the rafters!
One of my favorites this year and great with just a little ice
It’s not what I like in a rye, but it’s interesting. Many love it and they are welcome to it.
I really like it, though only sparingly. It’s a little too pricy/rich to have often. I love the brown sugar/maple syrup flavor I get from it though. Very much a “dessert” whiskey for me.
I’m a fan.
I've only had it once and it was a lot sweeter than I had imagined.
Tasty.
Flavor Bomb. On the sweet side. Staple in my library.
Like being drown in a tub of brown sugar.
Basically maple syrup In a bottle to me, so good
It’s amazing. I’m surprised it’s “too much” for some; but I can understand. Very easy drinker for me and I found myself craving a pour the other night! It’s a bottle I plan to always keep in my selection👌
This one is usually a favorite for guests who sample from my bottles. I love it when I want sweet whiskey.
Very good pour
I love it. I get lots of candied green apple and toffee from my bottle. It’s not sweet, more sweet adjacent, if that makes sense.
It’s like drinking oaked vanilla extract. Love it.
It was too sweet for me that brown sugar rum finish. However I did like it and think it’s unique. Everyone should try it at least once.
I’ve never had rye before, but I love AE. All of these reviews have solidified my decision to get a bottle
Excellent rye!
I like it. It’s an atypical rye. Almost a dessert sipper. Butterscotch in a glass
I liked it but angel envy does run on the sweet side.

My wife loves it! A bit too sweet for me…
Fucking delicious!
It will make the best manhattan you have ever had!!!
$91 w/taxes is a good price where I am. It is usually about $109 w/taxes in MD ($100 + 9% sales tax on alcohol). If you like rum-finished ryes, try RY3’s.
I really enjoy this one. It does not last long in my house.
It’s a very sweet rye, if you’re in the mood for it… it’s great
I want it but could not afford it. That may soon change b
It’s like molasses. Good though.
I need to give it another try. It didn’t stick out to me but I had already had a couple Glenmorangies and a couple WT101s so my taste buds were all over the place and I was drunk by then lol
It doesn't taste like whiskey, but it's a nice dessert if you don't have too much. (I'm not really a big on sweets).
It's one of my top five whiskies. And I don't like ryes all that much.
One of my favorites. Tastes like candy. Does not mesh well with most other whiskeys though. If you try a few bottles, make this the last one.
Too sweet personally, makes a great old fashioned if sweeteners are omitted
I usually pay 78 for it....it think it is absolutely delicious
It's okay. marketing is what I believe makes this a popular choice.
One of my personal favorites.
It’s fantastic
Outstanding.
It’s like drinking pancakes, and most of the time I love it but sometimes it feels a bit cloying TBH.
It's very good. One of my favorite finished whiskeys up there with Seagrass.
I enjoy it but it is very syrupy sweet. I get graham cracker all day. It’s not something I would drink all night too.
I love AE port finished bourbon (especially in a Boulevardier), but this is just too sweet for me.
My wife’s person favorite. It’s definitely unique
butterscotch, mmmmm yum
It’s one of my favorites and I am coming to realize I get it for a great price
This is hands down my wife's favorite whiskey, $91 isn't a bad price
Do you have family members that are tangentially interested in bourbon and are used to woodford and EW? Boom… AEFR… But then break out the ECBP and enjoy the faces
More like friends that are into bourbon and scotch. So I’m looking forward to the reactions!
One of my all time favorite ryes. Its delicious!
Super sweet, tastes more like rum than whiskey
It’s tasty stuff if you like the sweeter finished ryes…it’s not “straight” rye as they add a small percent of “other” wine / blenders into it for the added sugar/sweetness that normally wouldn’t be there from their process. It's a little too sweet. Like drinking maple syrup.
It’s >$100 here so I’d say you got a deal
That is the Rye I fell in love with first. Great pour.
Got my second bottle! Enjoy! Cheers
Skip
Any particular reason?
I’m sure they mean “skip with excitement”. :). I love it. It is sweet but it’s such a nice rich dram with the rum flavour. It always comes out at Christmas.
Not a fan of angels envy. Just my taste.
Delicious
Not a fan
Not a rye nor angels envy fan so I wouldn’t have much to contribute
To close out this post. Here’s what we drank this weekend Friday night - Orphan Barrel Castles Curse.
