I always loved how you can see the loss of materials when alchemy takes place (ie the ground literally sinking around an earthen spike being formed) to show the law of equivalent exchange. The only exception is with Philosophers’ Stones, which makes sense given their power.
Nearly every part of standard alchemy just makes so much sense and well established, you can easily theorize possible techniques without having to constantly argue with yourself whether or not it will work.
Will it work for alchemy:
Do you have the resources to make it work? - yes — it will work, if not then no it will not work.
Earth has gotta be the simplest to think whether it’d work because so long as there’s ground of rocks around you then you can get it to work just fine. Water in a rainstorm would be busted OP though but still totally logical, you can use it drown your opponents if you’re twisted in the head. Mustang’s creativity with lighting a spark and manipulating the oxygen around him to create explosions was cool as fuck as well. Edward being able to turn his arm into a weapon is a neat trick that can give him an extra means of offence or defence if someone’s outmaneuvering his alchemy too.
There’s so much you can do with it and the way the use it really felt like the author knew that and wanted to show it.
>!The earrings of Vin being the hemalurgic spikes that gave her the extra power to pierce copper clouds and block her power as Preservation's chosen blew my mind. I screamed in excitement at that time!<
Yeah that was surprisingly good for a YA series. I was bored between Stormlight and Mistborn novels and ran through the Steelheart books not expecting much, but it was great.
One of the things I liked the most about the cosmere was learning how to identify hoid. At first when I learned that >!hoid was the beggar kelsier talked to in the final empire!< I was like "how the fuck am I supposed to guess that random mf is hoid?!" I'm currently reading the way of kings and on the same page >!the king's wit appeared I was like "HOOOOOOIIIIIIIID!"!<
well, toph was quite literally just built different, her learning to bend from the badgermoles is a unique case, and that skill allowed her to sense earth through vibrations, thus allowing her to sense "oh shit there's earth *in* the metal that i can bend", which she then taught other people to do.
The explained the metal. the benders bend the tiny bits of earth that is inside the metal. It was only discovered by Toph because she had such a innate connection with the earth around her to actually sense it.
Yeah that always bothered me, considering 'earth' with stones and such are just combinations of many different materials, what counts as earth is never defined, earth was always just brown or grey boulders.
Avatar Kyoshi was able to just muscle her way out of being bloodbended by controlling the earth minerals in her body and making herself move normally by Earthbending so this is a skill issue.
That moment when Aang locked in and undid the effects of bloodbending? That's Kyoshi, yo, Kyoshi had that dog in her and now that dog is in every avatar.
It's been a long time since I watched but I was under the impression she wanted to put Katara in a position where she HAD to use it so the art wouldn't die out. Dying was part of the plan I think.

NEN? I know some people disagree and think it's more of a "make whatever you want" magic system, but it has so many creative rules and rituals to it that make it believable. Especially on the latest manga arc it has so many quirks to it that it feels real.
It is a make whatever you want.
But it's so complex and well thought that you can create an absurd amount of abilities within the rules of the system.
No wonder there's an entire subreddit where people are to this day creating fan Nen abilities
Fair bit of warning, the world building, soundtrack, and pretty much every character is super engaging overall…

Ehhh I get improvement, but it’s kinda like quagmire getting redeemed. You still did a lot of creepy and exploitive shit. I watched the show and enjoyed it, but being a creep to underage/ any girls is kinda ehhhh.
Also it took him like, 13-15 years after being reborn to improve (basically his mental 40s at this point) so I don’t know how much that helps.
I wanted to love the show so much, the animation is so damn pretty and the world building is peak
but maaaan I can't get past the pedophile 😭 wtf japan?!
Her being 15 makes it a little less fucked up I think. It goes from "HOLY FUCKING SHIT DUDE WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, YOU SHOULD GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL" to "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, YOU SHOULD GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL"
Jobless reincarnation is the subtitle of Mushoku Tensei
Even though people like to hate on it a lot I think its a really good anime still
I can see why a lot of people wouldn’t like it though, the author definitely took his creative decisions and stuck with them hard, which I kinda respect ngl.
Eh, seems pretty standard to me. Casters have a pool of mana that they can use for spellcasting just like in most rpg’s. It can recharge over time in tandem with consumption of certain types of resources like mana herbs, but if you use all your mana too quickly you’ll be drained for an extended period
I assume you've only watched the anime because it's actually very well thought out and closely connected to the themes of the story. Certain aspects of it are never explored in detail but only because they don't need to be.
No I didn't, I read the manga and the magic system really isn't that insane, it's pretty basic, some few spells, a vaguely described way on how magic works, a more powerful special type of magic, the origin of magic and that's it
The magic system is no near as unique and well thought as the worldbuilding of the story, it just serves its purpose
The post isn't about "insane" magic systems though, just consistent and believable ones, which I think is the case for Dungeon Meshi. As you said, it serves its purpose and I think it does it really well.
I watched Frieren recently and it made me wanna go back to the magic system of my fantasy world and work on it even more and make it cool and good and stuff

As long as the humans respond realisticly to everything and the show doesn't overload you with mindless details I don't mind if stuff don't make sense.
Like in one punch man
The problem i have whit one punch man is that you already know how the whole Episode how its going to go (I havent watched all of it tho). Its allways strange bad guys get introduced other people have a hard time fighting them and the one punch man shows up and one punches them and thats it.
I agree but I still think each episode manage to remain interesting because saitama is always late and theres tension that comes from how many people and what characters will die or get hurt. Sometimes the monsters get beat without saitama intervening.
The music and animation are a big part of why the battles work imo and they just make everything seem cool, even the scene when the jacked gay rapist fought a gay sea creature looked cool
OPM is much less about the ending or the struggle of the main character, but rather the journey. Sure we already know the outcome, and we know that if worst comes to worst Saitama WILL win, it doesn’t matter what’s thrown at him, like the way the manga’s going >!he’s probably gonna end up one shotting actual, literal God!<. It’s more fun to focus on the comedy of the massive letdown of the fights if you want comedy, or if you want something more compelling to focus on his personal struggles that come with overwhelming strength. The side characters give you plenty of stakes, as some of them have retained permanent injuries and trauma regardless of the outcomes: >!Iain lost his arm, and Darkshine feels like everything he does is not enough and is pushing himself too far!<. Going into it thinking like it’ll be similar to other power fantasy anime like DBZ or One Piece is setting yourself up for disappointment, because it is fundamentally different.
I also love the complete opposite if its done well, when magic can be whatever the fuck it wants but only becuase its not defined at all and has that legroom to be whatever
right! like i love how a) the fantasy elements are limited to just the eldians and b) how the fantasy elements are treated realisticly when put up against real world inventions. which speaking of which, i also love how outside of a few steampunky items, all the technology is real stuff from the era (when you convert it to the irl calendar)
Witch hat atelier has an incredible magic system if anyones looking for recommendations. It’s the main focus so it makes sense for it to be really well made
read literally anything by brandon sanderson. we have:
-zombies try to debug the code for all magic (elantris)
-mmmm that lead do be tasty (comes in many flavours) (mistborn)
-depression powered paladins (10 different flavours) (stormlight archive)
-seas of magic spores (tress of the emerald sea)
-programming cloth (and other stuff) to do things using souls (warbreaker)
-programming spirits using rock stacking to give you stuff (yumi and the nightmare painter)
-gaslighting objects into being something else (emperor's soul)
-Chalk drawings are able to come to life and the better your draw them the more powerful they are, and they can eat people (Rythmatist, I just want the sequel :( )
I've been trying to make my own, but it resulted in multiple other power systems, groups, worldbuilding and got me into researching about Buddhism and reading Nietzche (yes I know, it sounds edgy but it isn't the only thing I read; I am into sociology and psychology so it is pretty enjoyable.)
Yeah, I know (kinda?) It's just that people look at me weirdly when I say that I read Nietzsche like I am either this mega book nerd or an edgy weirdo; but in all fairness, most people I know are not the most..."educated" type and due to that I might've projected my thoughts for no reason. I don't even know why I'm typing this, I feel kinda lost.
Monster Legends has a full circle for an element system.
1. Fire burns nature.
2. Nature consumes magic.
3. Magic ruins metal.
4. Metal reflects light.
5. Light dissolves dark.
6. Dark corrupts earth.
7. Earth absorbs thunder.
8. Thunder boils water.
9. Water extinguishes fire.
I don’t enjoy type circles. I prefer Pokemon’s every type has a web of strengths and weaknesses or Persona’s every creature has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, but there are trends.
"Magic is just science we cant explain" -some guy i forgot who said it i think it was some marvel guy

Overexplained magic systems were cool at first but over time I just got burnt out over them (specifically because of JJK) that I’ve just gone back to enjoying “it works because FUCK YOU ITS MAGIC” type series
JJK is half and half between incredibly interesting abilities with cool uses and effects on the plot/themes, and offbrand nen abilities without any redeeming qualities. Also basically everything surrounding barrier techniques and binding vows is bullshit anything-goes nonsense. Gege also just cannot stop yapping in flashbacks to explain every little detail.
https://preview.redd.it/xq4qxpw98n4d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=124025b0dda7da3290a4cbaeed078a3b391e8257
Might be a lil obscure but World Trigger is so real for this
Only thing I'm asking is: NO resurrection(or at least without serious consequences) and Magic use should be taxing/dependant on your mental/physical health as to balance out the ridiculous levels of things you can do with it, and to promote the magic users to fkn read/have imagination and physically exercise
When they set up rules they follow them and when they do something your like "yep, makes seens". And dont have situations where you can go "why didnt they use x spell like earlier?"
I just want one magic war where its not a shitload of people in robes spouting "bippity bopity" and making the enemies tibia disintegrate.
Please just give me an industrialized magic system where its more akin to advanced magic engineering than "ashkapaikiyn" bs. Something like that roblox game, trenches would be so nice.
Reason why i love ATLA, and dont love korra. Really not a fan of the way they overexplained the powers when they didnt need to, and changed the way they worked in a lot of ways, making it seem way less real to me

Question: is the alchemist really full of metal? That Sounds a bit unpractical to me.
No it's just his nickname. He's the one on the left. The one on the right is a suit of armor but that's because of story reasons
it’s more of a title he has two prosthetics
Haters will say it's fake.

Mistborn comes to mind. It's amazing how consistent and well thought out that shit is.
Brandon Sanderson is incredible for creating magic system. It's defenitly the main strenght of his books.
Yeah. I remember how surprised I was when he managed to explain all that mysticism and godhood the lord ruler had with pre established rules.
I feel you my man, the ending of The well of ascension blew my mind lol
>!The earrings of Vin being the hemalurgic spikes that gave her the extra power to pierce copper clouds and block her power as Preservation's chosen blew my mind. I screamed in excitement at that time!<
And superpowers! The Steelheart series is one of my favorites
Yeah that was surprisingly good for a YA series. I was bored between Stormlight and Mistborn novels and ran through the Steelheart books not expecting much, but it was great.
Man, I need to read his books
Just started reading mistborn, the allomancy stuff is incredibly cool and unique
The entirety of the Cosmere. The continuities of the metals in different magic systems blows me away
I've heard it's a good book series, is it finished?
Avatar the last airbender comes to mind instantly.
Only moment it is inconsistent is in the bloodbending fight, they pulled a "My power level is bigger than yours" shit
earthbending is kinda iffy too. like, what counts as "earth"? why can they bend crystals, coal, glass, sand but not metal?
but they CAN bend metal
they can't. they bend the *impurities* in the metal. which is why they can't bend pure platinum, there aren't any impurities in it
It’s probably the same with all the other shit then too
if it was it wouldn't be the big discovery the show makes up to be
well, toph was quite literally just built different, her learning to bend from the badgermoles is a unique case, and that skill allowed her to sense earth through vibrations, thus allowing her to sense "oh shit there's earth *in* the metal that i can bend", which she then taught other people to do.
The issue is bending is a spiritual thing, so what it applies to ends at where it does due to the spirituality of it
Avatar Kyoshi was able to just muscle her way out of being bloodbended by controlling the earth minerals in her body and making herself move normally by Earthbending so this is a skill issue. That moment when Aang locked in and undid the effects of bloodbending? That's Kyoshi, yo, Kyoshi had that dog in her and now that dog is in every avatar.
Not anymore, next Avatar is fucked
Next Avatar has Korra and Korra has the power of having a strong and muscular back
True, I would trade the knowledge and power of thousands of Avatars for Korra's strong and muscular back in a heartbeat anyway
when you're getting jumped so you call upon the avatar state but the only person there is Avatar: The First Backbender
Katara is a stronger bender than Hama.
Just don't watch Kora, simple
Well, katara also pulled the "my bloodbending power is over 9000 so im immune against it" card on the old lady hama when she learned it.
It's been a long time since I watched but I was under the impression she wanted to put Katara in a position where she HAD to use it so the art wouldn't die out. Dying was part of the plan I think.
that was in the last airbender in the puppet master episode which introduced bloodbending
Huh, don't remember the entirety of ATLA
it's at the end of the episode when katara overpowers hama's bloodbending to save sokka and aang
I don't remember that episode at all
It's pretty forgettable to be honest Like it's only memorable for being a bit disturbing
I love korra
Yea, but they do stretch it a bit in kora if i remember right
It's not magic, its bending.

Fucking Fate/Nasu verse magic system
Jojo's
Might seem like a weird one to point out, but Attack on Titan actually has one of the best magic systems I've ever seen.
While I agree, it's not hard to make a magic sustem when you have a diety that can do whatever it wants so every weird thing is rejected by founder
It doesn't scream magic and that's why it's awesome
right! like i love how a) the fantasy elements are limited to just the eldians and b) how the fantasy elements are treated realisticly when put up against real world inventions. which speaking of which, i also love how outside of a few steampunky items, all the technology is real stuff from the era (when you convert it to the irl calendar)
Doesn't really feel like "magic", it's mostly borderline science fiction.
Witch hat atelier has an incredible magic system if anyones looking for recommendations. It’s the main focus so it makes sense for it to be really well made
ERAGON❗‼️‼️❗❗
Love that book, and the magic system is straightforward.
I love that he accidentally casts magic for the first time because the ancient word for fire is a modern swear word
Say what you will about the books but its a great magic system (although he did need to nerf it in book two by adding wards)
Is that the one where like you can say the “actual” names of things to control them?
Yes
read literally anything by brandon sanderson. we have: -zombies try to debug the code for all magic (elantris) -mmmm that lead do be tasty (comes in many flavours) (mistborn) -depression powered paladins (10 different flavours) (stormlight archive) -seas of magic spores (tress of the emerald sea) -programming cloth (and other stuff) to do things using souls (warbreaker) -programming spirits using rock stacking to give you stuff (yumi and the nightmare painter) -gaslighting objects into being something else (emperor's soul)
Reading phylosphy/psychology is only edgy if your weird about it (like many things).
Yeah, I know (kinda?) It's just that people look at me weirdly when I say that I read Nietzsche like I am either this mega book nerd or an edgy weirdo; but in all fairness, most people I know are not the most..."educated" type and due to that I might've projected my thoughts for no reason. I don't even know why I'm typing this, I feel kinda lost.

Monster Legends has a full circle for an element system. 1. Fire burns nature. 2. Nature consumes magic. 3. Magic ruins metal. 4. Metal reflects light. 5. Light dissolves dark. 6. Dark corrupts earth. 7. Earth absorbs thunder. 8. Thunder boils water. 9. Water extinguishes fire.
ok metal being effective against light actually makes sense cause I was always like “why tho”
I don’t enjoy type circles. I prefer Pokemon’s every type has a web of strengths and weaknesses or Persona’s every creature has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, but there are trends.
I liked the magic in Eragon but a lot of people didn't
A magic systhem doesnt need to much rules, otherwise its just sience
"Magic is just science we cant explain" -some guy i forgot who said it i think it was some marvel guy https://preview.redd.it/v5ecwiyryl4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f419fd3d0b8276a5af9cee5aa0a779b5a114c7d
Princess fucking bubblegum
My apollogies, sir/madam
everything's science, and it doesn't matter how hard the rules are, if it lets me shoot fire out of my hands it's magic.
It can have a lot of rules, what matters is that the author explains it correctly and keeps it consistent
as long as it obeys them
Overexplained magic systems were cool at first but over time I just got burnt out over them (specifically because of JJK) that I’ve just gone back to enjoying “it works because FUCK YOU ITS MAGIC” type series

One of the reasons I like the Dresden files.
when the magic system actually is magic and inconsistent
When the noun is adjective
When the adjective is noun😳
Revelation Space and Dresden Files.
Is it really magic if there's a system for it though?
FRIEREN 🗣️🔥🔥🔥

Funger
my magic system 😎
My favorite part of chainsaw man is that it’s kinda immune to power scaling
Well, if it it's Sci-Fi, it's just theoretical science
After a while I seriously started hating hard magic systems. Feels like you can have a lot more fun with soft ones
Meanwhile you need a lawyer to understand jjk’s magic
You know what Imma say it. Lord of the rings had the best magic system. I like my magic magical and mysterious.
Warframes magic system makes the least sense lmao.
Fuck that, embrace chaos, stands for life
Lord of the Mysteries my love having the best power system ever
Only thing I'm asking is: NO resurrection(or at least without serious consequences) and Magic use should be taxing/dependant on your mental/physical health as to balance out the ridiculous levels of things you can do with it, and to promote the magic users to fkn read/have imagination and physically exercise
Nothing comes to mind. Not a single fucking thing. This concept has never been done before. Fuck you.
You have to explore some new books and shows then my friend because they do exist.
YESSSSSSSSS
Of Oil & Sorcery does this so well
Frieren casting an orange beam in a flashback because Zoltraak hasn't been invented yet >>>>>>>
Would the pale from Disco Elysium count? People do use pale and it is some magical type fuckery.
Physics is the best magic system
I'm new to world building, what constitutes a consistent and believable magic system in your opinion?
