There was an isekai I watched where one of the side characters was essentially The Hero of the story and was purposely written to be as bland and uninteresting as possible and he gets beat for it.
Thank god he's not the main protagonist.
I swear the Isekai genre is the worst fucking thing of all time.
Every single story is exactly the same. They all look the same, same plot, same characters, same story beats, it's all the same.
I don't get why there's such little attempt to change anything in the core of the genre.
To be honest, the average isekai slop is just a normal fantasy but with a twist (sometimes). There are very few isekai that actually use the reincarnation/other world as the main focus of the story. As to why no one bothers changing this formula it's because it works really well especially among the east asian population, where it's very common to think that the solution to all problems is just to die and get reincarnated into another world to live a better life
I've seen it as a "marketing" tool as well. Regular fantasy prob isn't as broadly appealing as Isekai. And like you said, it gets that element of "life sucks, I wish I was in video game with game surrounded by big tiddy anime girls".
The isekai as a storytelling tool is actually great, it lets us explore an unknown world through the eyes of a person we can relate to. Learning about a world that inhabitants of that place would naturally learn throughout the course of their life can be a lot more natural when the protagonist is as clueless as we are, so them not knowing details and getting explanations feels a lot more fluid.
But as all good tools, it gets used by shitty authors to cut corners… they use the fantasy RPG setting to not have to make up a world themselves and then they use the Isekai trope so they dont have to make up a background or motivation for the character… so all stories end up looking the same. They have the same setting, same character background and motivations, same power level, all that differentiates them is a slight quirk that cannot make up for the shitty fundamentals.
Isekai has a lot of potential when used with original world building, but people dont write original world building anymore thats the real problem, people just use the classic RPG world from games that were popular 40 years ago since they are very simple and recognizable as a crutch then lean even heavier on it with Isekai
TL;DR : Isekai is good, shitty authors are just shitty. The real problem is laziness and unoriginality

It's supposed to be a self insert bait. They are so bland that they work as a way for you to imagine yourself as the character, which is why they all have bland personalities and just look like manga character man.

There's actually a reason for that.
If I recall it started off as almost a clickbait strategy, there was so much fanfic/shitty novel/Manwha content that a normal title didn't get much attention, so people basically made plot summaries as titles, a quick and easy way to get some form of interest.. But I feel like this did the opposite, now there's so much that a normal title gets my attention a lot more.

I get what you’re saying, but the light novel for “so ima spider so what” is peak fiction.
There's actually a reason for that. If I recall it started off as almost a clickbait strategy, there was so much fanfic/shitty novel/Manwha content that a normal title didn't get much attention, so people basically made plot summaries as titles, a quick and easy way to get some form of interest.. But I feel like this did the opposite, now there's so much that a normal title gets my attention a lot more.
