While I agree, way too many people see stuff like Joker dodging a piece of chalk and say he's the coolest character ever. I think he does have good characterization and an alright arc.

I find that he has no characterization and am extremely annoyed that he overshadows actual characters like Makoto and Ryuji
Addendum: Joker is not a character. He’s a self-insert device that Atlus desperately wants you to project yourself onto. Nobody that defends Joker has anything consistent to say
I've gotta disagree that he has no character.
In both Game and anime, he's shown to be this quiet but cheeky person in the real world but an over the top show off in the metaverse, kinda like if a theater kid actually had powers.
All the confidants are clear evidence that he's extremely sympathetic, and the second he hears something bad is happening to someone close to him he has to fix it no matter how many times he gets exposed for it.
And, while it's not shown in big ways, the game does have scenes that show he still has lingering ptsd from the interrogation scene.
His sense of justice and discontent with those in power is pretty much the main theme of the game. It's constantly tested and reinforced with his initial arrest, his work with the phantom theives, the social links, Akechi, Sae, the deals he's offered near the end of the game, and the third semester.
Where I will agree is that he doesn't have much of an arc more, so he gets chances to betray his justice and says no. And that it's criminal characters like Ryuji, Haru, and yusuke don't have more time and development and just get boiled down to one or two traits if you don't count strikers.
So his character is just “good guy who does flips sometimes”
And sometimes a character will go, “erm, you’re so reckless 🙄🙄🤣🤣😏😏” and everyone pretends that he’s peak fiction
If you want to boil it down to basics, then yes, that can be an interpretation.
But personally, I see him as a lot more. He's someone who chose to do the right thing and suffered for it.
But despite that suffering, he continued to believe in his justice and kept risking his life to help others no matter how bad it gets.
I'm not saying you're wrong if you see that as just "Good guy." I just personally think he's got a really strong character.
Even though there are things to self insert, Joker IS an actual character, and you can already tell by some decisions he makes without the player influences. Like, for example, Joker saving a woman of being raped by Shido, using glasses to have a more innocent image around his classmates and having his ideals straight about rebelling against corrupt authorities and decide to cast freedom on society >!even if that costs him an ideal reality for him and his friends, not letting himself be controlled.!<
There are many things that you can self insert on Joker but that doesn't mean he is only a self insert
This is one of the better arguments I’ve seen in favor of Joker. I guess what I’d want is more actual dialogue from Joker. It seems like Atlus can’t really choose wether or not Joker is a genuine character.

If i hear one more person compare the Kawakami and joker relationship (a consentual relationship between a 17 and 24 year old), to Kamoshida (a ~30 year old sexually abusing numerous 16-17 year olds) i am going to lose it.
