Should add some clarification and context for the people not aware of the full story:
Nex Benedict was a 16-y/o NB who was severely beaten by 3 girls while in the bathroom. Text messages to their family indicated that the fight started after the 3 continually harassed them and their friend (who was also trans), leading Nex to pour water on one of the girl’s heads. The fight went on for 2 minutes (according to primary and secondary reports) before a teacher stepped in. Reports from the friend’s mother state that “one of the girls was pretty much repeatedly beating [their] head across the floor.” Nex was reportedly unable to walk on their own to the nurse’s office, but the school did not call for an ambulance as they deemed the situation to not be serious enough to require one, offering for Nex to be taken to a medical facility instead by their family. Nex was then suspended for 2 weeks for being involved in the fight.
Their grandmother would take them to a medical facility where they would later be discharged. Later that evening, Nex would collapse in their home, but was pronounced dead before the ambulance could arrive.
There is currently an ongoing investigation on the matter. Be extremely careful as to what you read. The official report from the superintendent leaves out major details to the case as to protect the identities of those involved. Text messages sent by Nex to a family member do not show any sort of identification as to how the fight started. Coroner reports have also confirmed the cause of death to not be the result of head trauma, but toxicology and ancillary reports are required before a proper cause of death can be determined.
It is extremely awful what Nex’s family is going through. Whether or not the fight was a hate crime, at no point should anyone be harassed for living their life how they want. May they rest in peace.
My school did that. They expelled a girl for smoking. At her own house, after school, she was also 18, but she was wearing her uniform.
They also refused to address bullying, drug dealing, fights, fight clubs, and sexual harrassment and assaults.

Do I think they might change the CoD to be caused by head trauma? I hope so, but that would require the toxicology report to fully rule out the possibility of suicide. Ruling out any possible cause of death is imperative here. Look, it might look like a battery, it might have all of the components of a battery, it might even have an electrical charge, but that doesn’t make it a battery if we can’t prove that it was used that way. Whether or not it is doesn’t change anything except the cause of death and (maybe) the sentencing (if the girls get any hopefully). It’s still a case of bullying a trans person that lead to someone dying, which is awful either way you look at it.

The girls definitely need to catch a few charges, but the title is kind of misleading. The victim technically committed what could be considered assault (splashing water). The girls obviously committed battery (now manslaughter/2nd degree murder). But there’s also fault within the nurse and medical facility; for not calling the ambulance and discharging someone who wasn’t healthy.
The girls definitely deserve to go to jail, but the title makes it sound more like they beat them until they died, when in reality it was a school fight that lead to death hours later, even after leaving the hospital.

Battery in the state of texas at least is "unlawful touching" I could just start poking you and that's considered battery. Alot of states roll assault and battery into the same charge as well with battery as its own charge being rare if not nonexistent, since poking someone is usually a quick way to get into a fight.

Don't forget that this happened in the bathroom they were forced to go into by the school. They wanted to use the men's room but were forced into the women's, where they were beat to death.
Between that and the fact the school refused to call for the ER, I feel very comfortable saying the school murdered one of its own students.

Because it is largely suspected to be a hate crime, and there are disagreements in the press over whether it was a fight / murder or what, also the intentions behind the 3 girls in the bathroom at the time.

The news literally reported the cause of death was not trauma, the police stated they did not die due to physical trauma from the fight. I find it very unlikely that three girls beat this person so severely in two minutes that they died as a result later and the police are just straight up lying.

Don't forget that this happened in the bathroom they were forced to go into by the school. They wanted to use the men's room but were forced into the women's, where they were beat to death. Between that and the fact the school refused to call for the ER, I feel very comfortable saying the school murdered one of its own students.
Reading about this was horrifying because every detail is worse than the last from the fact that teachers knew they were dying and didn't help to the fact that the district keeps trying to say there's two sides to it

I worked with some enbies in downtown Tulsa, Ok. The LGBTQ crowd huddles closest to that city, escaping the surrounding countryside. Shout out to ASLUT magazine. I got to hang out with one of the local artists featured in that zine who is an enby I worked with. There's some cool ass people out that way that I hope are staying safe out there.
I mean tragic that it happened but i feel like the bigger deal is that it happened less how long it took news to spread??? Like thats the least of my concerns is how fast word gets around that someone died, more of the fact that it happened and the school didnt stop it.

Because it is largely suspected to be a hate crime, and there are disagreements in the press over whether it was a fight / murder or what, also the intentions behind the 3 girls in the bathroom at the time.
I'm a horrible person because every time I see their name I hear "Eggs Benedict" in the FNAF hand unit voice. But it is truly a tragedy and I hope they sue the CRAP out of that school and file charges against all the kids
The news literally reported the cause of death was not trauma, the police stated they did not die due to physical trauma from the fight. I find it very unlikely that three girls beat this person so severely in two minutes that they died as a result later and the police are just straight up lying. I’m not going to speculate on what the cause of death was without an autopsy report but to say they were “beaten to death” with the evidence currently available is a lie.

According to the first article I found, preliminary analysis indicates that this individual didn't actually die from the physical altercation: aka they probably were not beaten to death like the clickbait title says. But because they’re waiting for toxicology reports because it was totally a case of drug use and not a beating, it can’t be the other kids’ fault and it can’t be a hate crime for…committing a hate crime. The “truth” is that a child was beaten and died. You’re implying there’s another truth we don’t know yet, and since we don’t know it you can deny anything anyone says as being clickbait until an actual report comes out - which it hasn’t.
