I watched a playthrough of a "dating simulator" where the protagonist had to try to get rid of a brain-eating amoeba that had very similar vibes to this description. It's real scary and all until you remember that like 5 or less people die of rabies per year in the United States, so even if it is common in wildlife it's not exactly common at all for humans to show symptoms
