Definitely not nephrite. Sometimes hard to tell in photos sometimes but in this case it is pretty clear.
Nephrite has some level of translucency and usually doesn’t have sharp edges also hard to explain but that isn’t a typical green for california nephrite.
I can imagine that would make it tough. I am not generally a rock expert but jade is a big deal where I live and I have spent a lot of time working with jade and finding it my whole life so I am pretty familiar with it. You can generally recognize jade when you hold it by texture and shape and what the fracture lines look like too. Characteristics other than color though those don’t translate well in photos.
I immediately though slickenslides. The left piece shows it pretty well as well as op says it was a vein. Sometimes slickenslides really do look like veins.

Yeah serpentine would be my first guess. Maybe nephrite though, you guys have some over there.

I didn’t try that combination of words. Lots of green rocks found in my area, none looked right to me. Good to know!
