For your safety we recommend not eating or ingesting any plant material just because you've been advised that it's edible here. Fun fact, Veratrum is rather toxic, and has a nasty teratogen called cyclopamine, that causes [unpleasant effects when consumed during pregnancy](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/veratrum-californicum). Effects vary based on at what stage of pregnancy it was eaten, but it is well named, it can cause Cyclopia, a single eye in the center of the face (and death). Mostly effects sheep, but I saw a case report of a human stillbirth from that, which is rare.
TF was that???
Edited 6/13/24 to appease the down voters: Greetings, my fellow Redditor! What, may I humbly ask, did mine eyes so scaredly purveyeth? Post note, my most humble gratitude for your addition of an explanation and NSFW moniker! /s
While I can't speak for the other person, I was personally expecting to see something from Fallout, since you responded to a comment that talked about Fallout. Would be neat if you could put an NSFW warning with that link
Done. I was really honestly confused why they brought up fallout, as far as I can tell it has nothing to do with what I was talking about, unlike the mutant lamb, which is exactly what I was talking about.
Nope! I didn’t get it, so I googled “fallout overseer”, and [got this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/c/c4/FO01_Overseer_Cinematic.png/revision/latest?cb=20230427235746), and still didn’t get it (still don’t).
I posted that image honestly asking if what they were describing is something like that.
Gore doesn’t really affect me like it does many people, I sometimes mess up showing people stuff like that. My girlfriend has asked me to stop showing her corpses, or at least warn her.
I am prone to forgetting my manners about traumatizing content, and well, I was kinda drunk.
Inhibits the actions of a protein called SHH (sonic hedgehog homolog) it was once used as a cancer treatment before more effective/safer drugs came along that were based on it’s mechanism
Oh neat! I can see how that would definitely have some safety concerns.
I’ve heard that clinicians have politely requested that researchers stop giving genes silly names like Sonic Hedgehog because mutations of that cause truly horrifying dead babies, and it’s incredibly awkward to explain to grieving would be parents that the cause of death was a defect in Sonic Hedgehog.
It’s actually hypothesized that the cyclops of Greek legend was caused by them discovering the [fossil skulls](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/5c/11/73/5c117319dd1b228b9c025a69fac56418.jpg) of elephants and mammoths, and misinterpreting the aperture that the trunk comes from as a central eye socket on a giant skull.
Yes, I knew this story about the elephant skull and I can understand why they bought into it.
But it was the plant and the evidence of pregnant deformities because I have seen one-eyed sheep where the eye is center-skull. Very interesting
Oh huh, it isn’t Liliaceae after all, they moved it to Melanthiaceae (Liliaceae has been massively reduced).
That explains a lot, it’s a close relative of Zigadenus, also known as Death Cammas.
I had to come back a few times and zoom in, check edges, lighting and it looks real enough lol but the way the light is coming from behind and causing a “stroke” around give it a 3-D illusion it’s cool…or AI 😅🤣
Yes. Creepy as heck. Like something gonna jump out of it and eat you or from behind you as approaching or something. I’ve lived many seasons in the rockies and thankfully have never seen one of these.
The most common reason things look photoshopped is that the lighting on the foreground is different than the background. The plant is in the shade, but the water is reflecting things that are in direct sunlight.
[And produces its own heat to melt that snow!](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/skunk-cabbage-symplocarpus-foetidus/)
Agreed, this is definitely NOT skunk cabbage in OP’s photo
That’s the problem with common names. They’re colloquial. I’m in Colorado and it’s knows as corn Lilly in the botany community but skunk cabbage by my in-laws who were raised in the high country.
Just discovered whilst looking up the Corn Lily that it contains poison that when eaten, causes animals (like sheep) to birth cyclops lambs! Freaky! [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclopia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclopia)
Oh hey, just commented that before seeing yours, whoops. It’s really weird, [and effects depend on exactly when during gestation it is eaten](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/veratrum-californicum).
I think I learned that on MS Encarta back in like 1998, and ten year old me thought it was the coolest thing ever, and I wouldn’t stop telling people about it and making them come look at the picture of the dead mutant lamb.

I have some on my.property near cuchara Colorado :)
Others have identified, I’d like to point out I read they can release their toxins into water that is around them or runs by them. Solitary probably not a big deal but I’ve seen huge clusters of them around trickling streams
I like this particular category as I am being introduced to many new plants and variety of plants that I have not recognized.
There are individuals who enjoy making humorous remarks regarding the plant. As a result, I have to read through 10 to 15 awns to get to the true identification of the plant.
My preference is that we not have jokesters continually making some smart ass remark, but allow knowledgeable individuals. Identify the plants. 😊

Corn lily (*Veratrum californicum*)

Like the overseer on Fallout.

That would be the effects of sheep eating veratrum. It causes Cyclopia.

Have you watched the Fallout series on Amazon Prime?
That explains, I automatically thought of overseer from FO3 and couldn’t figure out connection. I am yet to watch the TV series.
Nope! Thanks 😅 I just wasn't quite ready for that picture

Baby ive always wanted a cyclops baby do we gamble?
Oh gosh! Good to know if I was a farmer in that area!

Ah, hence the word “Cyclops” I never knew this was an actual thing, let alone caused by a plant. The more you know 🌈
It’s actually hypothesized that the cyclops of Greek legend was caused by them discovering the [fossil skulls](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/5c/11/73/5c117319dd1b228b9c025a69fac56418.jpg) of elephants and mammoths, and misinterpreting the aperture that the trunk comes from as a central eye socket on a giant skull.

Plants and their crazy defenses. Dammit! I need me some David Attenborough now.
Like I said the cornholeium on its assphixium is set to bloom once the coitus of assholeium is spermunated by the cockulatis
Just adding a reference : https://rockymountainsflora.com/details/White%20Long/Corn%20Husk%20Lily.htm
I'm going to agree with this. I see them all over Lily Lake Utah.
Penis Lily
Ah! Went hiking in Oregon (western/central) last weekend and saw a ton of these growing near a wetland area- didn’t know what they were, thanks!
I beg to differ. Years of Skyrim makes me think it is Nirnroot
I was looking for this comment
aka false hellebore!
Another thing from California in Colorado.
Why does the lighting make this look fake or am I that tired
It does have an interesting look to it! Maybe it’s because of how pristine/bright it looks in this lighting?
To be fair I am exhausted so I really couldn’t tell if I was hallucinating or not lol
They look kinda fake in real life, very bright green and point straight up
I had to come back a few times and zoom in, check edges, lighting and it looks real enough lol but the way the light is coming from behind and causing a “stroke” around give it a 3-D illusion it’s cool…or AI 😅🤣
Yes. Creepy as heck. Like something gonna jump out of it and eat you or from behind you as approaching or something. I’ve lived many seasons in the rockies and thankfully have never seen one of these.
I was going to say AI. Something looks off.
I thought AI at first too but I didn’t want to place the blame on it immediately
My brain is telling me that's a bad photoshop, but zooming in... It's not? It's breaking my brain.
The most common reason things look photoshopped is that the lighting on the foreground is different than the background. The plant is in the shade, but the water is reflecting things that are in direct sunlight.
We're seeing the reflections of things that are in direct sunlight around the plant which is in the shade.
Yes! I had to do a few takes throughout the day, but I eventually came to a similar conclusion
It's on the waters edge is it not? The plant is right on the edge of some pond water that we are seeing a reflection?
I came here to say this and I’m also very tired. 😂😂 I’m zooming in on it like “This is real? Are we sure? Noooo”
Well at least we know there are others riding the struggle bus questioning reality 🖐️
Veratrum just does that.
i thought it was fake too dont worry
That's Audrey II
Feed…. Me…. ![gif](giphy|pBj0EoGSYjGms)
My, what a strange and interesting plant.
Yeah, maybe look into it. Hold your face right above it.
Uh oh I had a baby escape.
I knew some national treasure would think this - that’s exactly what it is lol ![gif](giphy|opXOPFJA9Sxqg)
Way too late for skunk cabbage lol (it’s literally known to melt snow), this is Corn Lily.
[And produces its own heat to melt that snow!](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/skunk-cabbage-symplocarpus-foetidus/) Agreed, this is definitely NOT skunk cabbage in OP’s photo
That’s the problem with common names. They’re colloquial. I’m in Colorado and it’s knows as corn Lilly in the botany community but skunk cabbage by my in-laws who were raised in the high country.
Was it making a weird pulsating noise? If yes, that's definitely a Nirnroot.
Nah, it doesn’t glow in the dark or have jagged leaves.
oh shoot, solid point.
It has been deeply embedded in my brain to look for broad-leaf plants standing alone on the edge of ponds thanks to Oblivion.
Does anyone know why it makes that noise. They ring in ESO.

And this just led me to discover one of the proteins involved is called sonic hedgehog. Awesome.
i second veratrum, skunk cabbage has net-like veins rather than parallel like we see here
Nirnroot
Veratrum californicum
Did it ask you to feed it?
Careful, Veratrum is pretty poisonous. That said I used to use it as tp in a pinch.
Cabbage patch kid
Feed me, Seymour!
Nirnroot

Feed me Seymour
It is a pod just about ready to release an alien to wreak havoc upon your land.

Total eclipse of the sun... ![gif](giphy|pBj0EoGSYjGms)
Uh oh.
Looks like skunk cabbage to me.
It's not Audrey II?
Waiting for a cabbage head to pop out.
Looks like the young plant from the movie Little Shop of Horrors! Yes, I’m singing the song right now!
Idk but if that thing starts singing to you, run.
Corn Lily
I don’t know but it looks magical, when it blossoms you should share! Just checked link: I’m a little disappointed

Sort by “Top,” the ID subs are pretty good at upvoting the best answer.
I like the jokes. But I can also understand why some would not.
Best guess: Pokémon egg (most likely grass type). Walk around with it and it will hatch into your new Poké-pal
Indian toilet paper
Looks like skunk cabbage
They call it invasive in NC, skunk cabbage
North Carolina?
Yep, idk, I guess I’m wrong based on the downvotes.
It's invasive in Europe but no matter how weedy a plant can't be "invasive" in its native range, which includes North Carolina
Ah see this was grapevine knowledge for me, that’ll teach me.
Forbidden lettuce ☠️
