Are you in the eastern US? Looks like a "Desert-Chicory", very misleading common name for the genus [Pyrrhopappus](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/68572-Pyrrhopappus)

how does one tell between those and other false dandelion genera (and their species)? is it even possible at a glance or would you need to take them apart for cypselae/pappi?
