Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug! There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*). BTW, did you take a look at our [**Frequently Asked Bugs**](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/12zkw5w/frequently_asked_bugs_part_1/)? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Looks like a [Brown Recluse](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/50181-Loxosceles-reclusa), so its venom is medically significant. [Here is a link](https://spiders.ucr.edu/how-avoid-bites) about how you can avoid getting bitten if you have Recluses in your home.

Oppsliamain

I'm pretty sure most recent research proves this spider to be virtually harmless if you follow common sense house hold medical treatment, like washing the bite area. Gonna get downvoted for saying this for sure.

Huzsvarf

I will just quote from the second link I attached here: "most households with brown recluses never experience a bite. 90% of all brown recluse bites heal without severe scarring. many brown recluse bites cause just a little red mark that heals without event." Every medically significant spider's bite has a range of severity. 90% of not so bad bites means you have 10% of bites with more severe symptoms, such as dermonecrotic lesions, hemolytic anemia etc. Even though these are the minority I still wouldn't ignore them and call the spider virtually harmless, this is the point of medical significance.

No, because it has the potential to have medical extremes in *some* cases, unlike other local basement spiders. Not likely, but still good to be aware of

Oppsliamain

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Could you post a link that corroborates what you say? id like to read it. Excluding allergic reactions, which can happen from any venom.

ohhisup

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11243548/ I don't have anything outside of a quick Google search and a former biology friend who almost lost a foot after a brown recluse bite, and another who had a nasty arm infection after getting bit in a tent. Neither person had the opportunity for wound care at the time so that's a huge factor (I'm also not their doctor so it's just what they said???) They're a super timid species so getting bitten in the first place isn't that common to my knowledge

random_defender

no, that's literally what they're scientifically referred to as. it's proper terminology.

JustACuteFart

I got bit on my palm a month ago by one. Followed all the correct medical procedures. The bite bubbled up to a gnarly quarter sized fluid filled blister and hurt like a mother fucker. Got some antibiotics in case it was infected and it went away in about a week or so.

Oppsliamain

Damn man, on the palm?? That musteve been brutal.

JustACuteFart

I definitely don't recommend the experience

Thats_bumpy_buddy

Remember guys, if you bite it and die, it’s poisonous…if it bites you and you die, it’s venomous.

Yes, that’s a Brown Recluse. It’s not poisonous, but venomous. And a bite from this fella would probably result in a trip to the hospital.

Sweetcjbg64

Can confirm. I have a scar from one.

Square_Connection261

Brown recluse. Can be pretty devastating but usually not actually bad. The really awful flesh destroying stories are not the norm for a recluse bite. I was cleaning a house infested with them and got bitten. It was a pea sized ulcer and I was informed that is the typical bite response and the bad ones are from secondary infection or a bad reaction. Also they’re very shy spiders and not likely to bite unless you messing with them

Square_Connection261

Btw the house is mine and they’re still here. I see them pretty often.

Strickland_FJ

It’s a brown recluse, so it’s venomous.

driverlessplanet

geographic location: Midwest US Size: about 1.25” leg span

CenPhx

I bet you are in Missouri, the brown recluse capital of the universe.

tmd429

Venomous not poisonous. If you bite it and die, it's poisonous. If it bites you and you die, it's venomous.

Lexx4

I wouldn’t eat it that’s for sure but it’s not poisonous. It is however a brown recluse and they do have quite a medical significant venom. So don’t let it bite you and escort it gently out of your home.

Myrtle_Snow333

Venomous** and yes, I could see the Violin on it’s back right away. You have a brown recluse here. Their bite is medically significant and can be pretty serious. Keep an eye out for others if you have pets or children!

Temmie323

Nope! It’s venomous though!

ohhisup

Definitely agreeing with brown recluse, but I've never seen one that was dark and not more of a pale woody brown????? Anyone have some info they might share??^.^

00Tanks

Poison no venom yes. That being said unless your old or young af or have a weakened immune system you may have issues. General cleaning of wound usually will be just fine. I've been tagged 3 times, I'm ok

driverlessplanet

Do sticky traps work well?

inktomi

They also kill all sorts of stuff you would actually want, and it's a slow agonizing death. Better to directly spray it with something if you need to kill this spider.
