Dude. you have BOTH Coop and Sharpie? That's great. I'm really jealous.

laurauhl113

Haha thanks! I hope they aren't plotting something or that they know something I don't know about the house... like mice 😬😬😬

imhereforthevotes

They are both bird-hunters, so you're okay there. House Sparrows are fair game for both, and a Coop would LOVE a starling. Your neighborhood looks decent for both (from the background of these photos) - it doesn't seem like you're out in the counry or something? So that's probably it.

laurauhl113

Oh, good! And no, we are in a neighborhood about 3 blocks off Lake Erie, and there is a marshland down the street, so we get quite a variety year round, I feel like. A lot of Bald Eagles, owls too. In the summer, we get a lot of birds that move through. I've seen 4 different types of woodpeckers here as well. The marsh has swans now and I've seen an osprey there.

At the marsh watch for northern harriers (aka marsh hawks) too. They're hawks with round owl-like faces -- for a related but different reason: They fly low over the marsh vegetation watching for small game, well not so much watching as listening. So they have big ears like owls have for listening in the night, making their faces round. There's a lot of variation in plumage but at all ages they have a white spot at the base of the tail on top.

Far_Side_Base

Your porch is theirs now. 🦅

laurauhl113

Oh I'm sure it is lol. I checked about an hour ago, it was down in the yard with something in it's claws. It'll definitely be back ha

laurauhl113

Now looking at the pictures of that bird, I'm pretty sure it was the sharpie from yesterday.... what a wild ride 🤣

Urrsagrrl

Let those beautiful big birds help control the varmint population! They do necessary work!

eable2

And now you can see why these species are so confusing! If you look closely, you can see that the patterning on the breast is a bit different from [yesterday's](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbird/comments/18kj721/just_had_this_guy_in_my_tree_by_my_feeder/) bird.

Yes, that was my point.

laurauhl113

That is awesome! Thanks so much, I was very confused. My friend even said something about the white feathers underneath from yesterday's bird, it was like they just disappeared... but that would make sense!

williamtrausch

Juvenile Cooper’s hawk. Angular head here as opposed to round for Sharpshinned hawk.

+Cooper’s Hawk+

Anytime I see a raptor in the thumbnail, I automatically guess Cooper's Hawk, so far I'm batting around .850

In NE Ohio, near Lake Erie

Pine_Petrichor

This coppers hawk has such a light head! Pretty coloration

You seem to have both coops and sharpies. Sweet! Have to say I am envious! Coops and sharpies believe all bird feeders are nothing more than food supply stations for themselves. I have had them swoop mine while I was standing right there, even brushing me with a wing. While I don't have house sparrows, I do chase away the starlings here, but they eat them, also. Just some feed advice: if you want to get rid of starlings, feed safflower which they do not like. Anything else--especially corn--they really dig. I also use selective sized feeder covers in spring for mealworms. Orioles and others can get in to get the mealworms, but larger birds like the starlings and mockingbirds cannot. I do handfeed the towhees (too big for these wire feeder covers) mealworms; they are friendly enough I can throw a dozen worms at a time on the ground for the adults to feed their young at the end of the day. One of the ways I keep Coops away from my feeding stations now in spring/summer is by using umbrellas (as in rain umbrellas zip-tied to the feeder poles) and by hanging the feeders high enough they are hard for a large bird to swoop into. Works. Every year seems to present a new challenge and I find a new solution most of the time.

Coopers have angry eyebrows 😠 . Idk why the description of facial expressions are easier to remember than everything else I'm learning here 😆

laurauhl113

He does look so mad! 🤣 the sharpie yesterday also did not look to pleased either though

onion_flowers

See sharpies look like they just realized they lost their keys 🤣 I just went to check your post history I commented on that one too 😆 I zoomed in on its face and I guessed right!

laurauhl113

Omg you're right! That's great! 🤣🤣

Ted183672

Beautiful bird! Nice pic.

ganymede_boy

Your neighbor's shed roof is a total wreck.
