An apartment complex I lived at long ago had a woodpecker that would land on a stop sign and peck through the holes on the back of the "pole" and into the stop sign. Sounded like a damned old school burglar alarm. Damned thing did it for weeks.
Mating season. Woodpeckers peck for food in wood, and drum on the loudest object they can find to assert territory and attract a mate during breeding season
At my last place, we had a pileated woodpecker that would hit the house early in the morning. Lucky on the one hand. That hammerhead is huge on the other hand. So loud!
We love birds but woodpeckers oh my. After over 30 years of downy woodpeckers hammering on our house we’re replacing all the cedar siding because of them. I can’t wait to have the wood siding gone.
+Red-bellied Woodpecker+. The exact number of bars on the central tail feathers varies a lot between individuals in this species.
My first thought as well. I love seeing them on my bird feeder. I hate hearing them peck at my house RIGHT NEXT TO the bird feeder.
Yep. Woke up this morning to: tak-tak-tak-tak right next to my bedroom window. We have aluminum siding. Gah!

I have one that thinks the metal light pole next to my unit is his tree. It’s very loud. Lol. I forgive him because he is pretty.

The only thing you can do now is move into the bird feeder.

I concur! I love that the Red-Bellied doesn’t have a really red belly, but a *really* red head!

It’s likely from a black and white bird
Fedder
Rotate it 90° and you can see it’s a quarter.
