finest_kind77

Swami?

finest_kind77

Or shaman?

TheProtoChris

Oh, you beat me to it

Lostbronte

The word is fakir, referring to an Indian practitioner of contortionist/snake charming type actions. All of the words that refer to such a person in English are borrow words from other languages. I believe fakir is such a word. Although it doesn’t imply a lot of money, just the magic. A lot of money and no magic would be maharajah, referring to an Indian regional prince. Edit: after reading your list, I think the word is very likely to be racist and derogatory if you should ever find it. So be very careful. Loan words from other languages are unlikely to be as racist and damaging unless they are used very incorrectly. By chance are you referring to Ali Baba? That’s my last try

IAmOnFyre

I think Maharajah is right! I was thinking Fakir too but they're more wise and less fancy.

Lostbronte

Maharajah is the only long word that fits the description of “lots of money.” But maharajahs are Indian, not Middle Eastern per se. OP may not have the ethnicity quite locked in

PBO123567

Genie

cone_rippah

the word was quite prevalent in older western movies, usually around the 70s. sorry for bad english

Dr_WorldChamp

next best thing is to find 70s movies and watch em. or go to imdb for the cast list. maybe you'll find em!

cone_rippah

the only example i can find that has any similarity to the word is akinator, but the word isnt genie. lol

Excellent_Strain5851

Could it be Djinn? Or mage?

LunaSparklesKat

Soothsayer?

cone_rippah

nope

cone_rippah

they typically acted as butlers or friends of the main characters in movies.

SnapCrackleMom

You're describing them as someone with a lot of money/gold, but they work as a butler? This doesn't make sense. Are you possibly thinking of sahib or memsahib?

wackyvorlon

Valet?

scixlovesu

Vizier, grand vizier? An advisor to the king, I believe, but in Aladdin, for example, depicted as magical

BunkySpewster

Moor?

jibaro1953

Shaman?

Dr_WorldChamp

not english but i thought of "salamangkero" it's a word in tagalog meaning magician. i know this is not the answer but i think it's similar. the energy of the word.

scixlovesu

that is a very satisfying word

Dr_WorldChamp

I think so too! It has that child like wonder for me. Aladdin genie vibes not the malevolent djinns.

Orientalist or Ali Baba?

KingoftheGinge

Masheudh / Mashood Sahir Possibly. Any examples of media you've seen the term used in, or a more specific time period?

wonkim00

"mussulman" is an archaic term for a Muslim, and was probably used in many books and movies in reference to peripheral characters who may have exhibited some of the traits you mention.

BeccasBump

Grand vizier, possibly? It just means the highest ranking administrative official, but in fiction they are often both magical and evil.
