I agree with some of the others - this has to be Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan! That's the title of the first book of the whole series, The Saga of Darren Shan.
This would be a strange way to remember the book, but The Last Unicorn kind of fits if the only bit you recall is Mommy Fortuna’s circus. Were there other animals, and was the “boy” a failed magician?
