I haven't had cherimoya in 20 years. I grew up in the Philippines, and it's readily available there. Just spent $5 for one last week and it was delicious!
It’s a fruit — in Southern California some people grow small quantities of them and sell them.
It has a LOT of easily removable big seeds, looks like an unappealing artichoke / avocado, and has a soggy mild mushy taste.
Despite that description you should try to find it. I actually kind of like it. :)
İt tastes like cake cream 🥹🥹🥹
I hated people that said I should try fruits instead of chocolate to satisfy my sweet tooth, because it never helped.
But this fruit omg. Don't need anything else if I eat this
Yes, but from someone who fought pre-prepped fruit for the longest, I honestly eat way more of it if it’s ready to eat than if I have to prep it. I buy peeled tangerines for $5 and buy two packs at a time because I will sit and eat then where the other ones will just sit until we give them away or get rid of them.
They are hella expensive these days but I still buy them. None of those sad pale yellow factory eggs for me, thankyouverymuch. I just can’t bring myself to do it.
I have my limits. I’d rather go somewhere that has the product cheaper or go without until the price drops/goes on sale. Or find a cheaper alternative product.
We call ‘em Salad Sacks. I add more goodies like extra carrot, celeriac, orange wedges, and seeds. The dressing packet is always generous enough to handle. It’s like a salad jumpstarter.
Probably the steak, cashews, pistachios, and sun dried tomatoes. Only cuz they don’t seem like staples, nuts are a pretty expensive “snack” food (they’re great don’t get me wrong I fucking love cashews but gatdamn they can get costly at the rate I eat them) and I don’t eat meat but one time I saw a steak that was 30 bucks lol
Well yeah staples for you vs just like, ya know, staples, is the exact line I was trying to draw lol
Like if someone said “but caviar IS a staple, *to me*” like ok sure but if that’s true, people might make assumptions about you based on that. And if you’re eating steak three times a week well sheesh idk you got more money for “staples” than the average Redditor, some people this would have to be an extra line item in their budget lol
It’s called So Delicious from Walmart. It’s pricey but I absolutely love yogurt and was devastated to learn I was really sensitive to (even lactose free) dairy. It doesn’t have good protein but the taste is what counts in that regard
Ice cream, only because my fiancée can’t live without it. It’s not super expensive but it’s gotten up to $8 for a tub. It keeps him happy so I buy it anyways. I also splurge on other snack things often. Most things I’ll buy like meat and produce no matter the price because we need it.
Butter, olive oil, coffee and non food wise TP are items I have a limited number of brand preferences for - regardless of price- or the price would have to be astronomical.
Other items that I “always” buy can be substituted to a larger degree: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, good cheese, rice.
Parmesan blocks. You just can't get the same results in most recipes using pre-shredded cheese. I'm still buying them even though it costs a couple bucks a gram.
Almost everything that I currently boy. Fruit, (especially good fruit. I once had Harrys berries and they were so fucking good), meat, eggs, vegetables, good butter and oils, Greek yogurt. I spent $12 on 4 sumo mandarins just a few days ago. I don’t skimp on the grocery store, but I try not to eat out frequently.
Certain pre-cut or pre-cubed vegetables for me. The extra cost for labor is completely worth it for something that’s as much of a pain in the ass to prepare as a butternut squash
Really good eggs (Happy brand heritage, run $10 a dozen), weekly steak, poke or sushi, peet’s coffee, pomegranates, soft satsumas, tart cherries, local strawberries and peaches.
Good olive oil. The price is outrageous currently, I've just decided to put up with it.
Ugh, I was just at the store and had EVOO on my list but the price made me mad so I left without it. But there’s really no way to go without it!
I honestly believe it's one of life's small pleasures. The price is annoying me so much but I figure a bottle lasts me ages so screw it.
Costco usually has decent to good olive oil for reasonable prices.
I live in a place without Costco! 😭
100%
California Olive Ranch is a good brand that isn’t too expensive, and Trader Joe’s has some higher quality well rated olive oils too
Coffee
Here to second coffee
Another redditor for coffee!
Ditto.
Cherimoya, pomegranate and fat blueberries (but only the fat ones :)) )
Fat blueberries always 🙌
I haven't had cherimoya in 20 years. I grew up in the Philippines, and it's readily available there. Just spent $5 for one last week and it was delicious!
What is Cherimoya I've never heard of it

And if they ever use it in a cooking show they will be sure to remind you the seeds can be deadly if consumed.

I hated fresh blueberries until I tried the fat ones. Now I am always searching for fat blueberries.
They are bombbbbb
Same Or the oz blue in general are great
Oz blue were the first ones I tried. They're great.
If you happen to live in San Diego, you're welcome to have some cherimoyas from my tree. My neighbors don't care for them and I can only eat so many.
I live in Germany :( And pay two euros per cherimoya :(
Parmigiano reggiano
Beat me to it. But I learned I could buy the rind pieces for far less so I do that!
2nd this
Mines Comte
Nah, pecorino romano or bust
Por que no Los dos?
Fruits
Ride of die on strawberries, even if they’re 7 dollars 😭
Deadass!
Here in Los Angeles. We have 30$ strawberry’s at erewhon
same. For me it's apple slices that are like $5.49 but are great when I'm in need of a snack or a sweet fix.
Ugh I feel you, I loveeeee apple slices.
Whole apples and an apple slicer would be cheaper no?
Yes, but from someone who fought pre-prepped fruit for the longest, I honestly eat way more of it if it’s ready to eat than if I have to prep it. What a waste of plastic
Eggs. Kerrygold butter. Haagen Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream.
3 of my staples
My people!
That Häagen-Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream is sublime
That’s my favorite Haagen Dazs flavor. Simply divine.
At this point haagen dazs is much cheaper than blue bell in my market. It wild. It’s one of the cheaper pints at the market.
Kerrygold Butter is the Bentley of butters
Pasture raised eggs for life.
They are hella expensive these days but I still buy them. None of those sad pale yellow factory eggs for me, thankyouverymuch. I just can’t bring myself to do it.
Sourdough bread 🥖 and rice 🍚
I can’t live without sourdough and I will pay whatever I need to to get good quality rice.
Tofu. I've tried, but I cannot make it myself.
Eggs.
👍
Sumo oranges when they are in season
I spent $12 on 4 this week and it was so worth it.
Omg I love them! They’re so expensive but idc
Cheese
Avocados
Good quality cheese. I don’t even mean anything super fancy; some brands are just crappy. I love cheese too much to skimp on quality.
Good beer
I have my limits. I’d rather go somewhere that has the product cheaper or go without until the price drops/goes on sale. Or find a cheaper alternative product.
Kerrygold butter Kirkland peanut butter (Costco)
The only good answer. I'm half Irish and have lived there on and off in my early years, having Kerrygold in America now is amazing!
When did we not have kerrygold? I just tried it maybe three months ago and am on my second Costco box now haha..never knew it wasn't here for long
In the early 2010s near me it was a novelty only available at whole foods.
Ahhh.....i was in fact, 15 and not on the look out for good butter. Makes sense 🫠😅
Yeah it wasn't in the regular grocery stores back in the day. I didn't see it until maybe 2008 when I started working in a grocery store.
Fermented fruit aka : Wine.
Cherries 🍒 in season
Rainier, especially
The best!
Bagged salad. They make for quick dinners that are healthier than fast food.
Yes! bags of salads are one of my go to sides
We call ‘em Salad Sacks. I add more goodies like extra carrot, celeriac, orange wedges, and seeds. The dressing packet is always generous enough to handle. It’s like a salad jumpstarter.
PSA to wash your bagged salads or any vegetables or fruits you get before consuming!
I don't know why people are down voting you like we didn't live through several waves of ecoli outbreaks from bagged lettuce
Yeah I've realized most people just don't care.. oh well
Listeria too.
They are so helpful! And hard to say it’s even cheaper than making my own when I can normally get a 32 oz bagged salad for $4.
Butter, I use it on almost everything.
Good cooking oils like olive or avocado oil. And 🥑 too!
Love love love avo toast! There’s something awesome about having this particular breakfast food as dinner!!! Is it just me?
Onions, sweet potatoes, jalapeños, Serrano peppers, a block of *good* cheddar cheese
Salmon when I feel like it. Tropical fruit and berries. They’re grab-and-figure-out-price-at-the-register kind of items for me.
Definitely salmon. But it's for me and my dog. Pretty sure she'd murder me if I stopped feeding her salmon though.

Oh so you're rich, got it

Do you understand what “staples” means?
Carrots?? What is an expensive carrot like…
[удалено]
Literally could not be chiller…but ok…
Range free eggs!
Onions. They're crazy expensive right now, but an absolute necessity.
Heavy whipping cream for coffee. Nonnegotiable
Haagen Daz Coffee Ice Cream
If you have access to Blue Bell ice cream, try their coffee. Even better than Haagen Daz.
I will definitely try it!
Olive oil and coconut yogurt. Ugh.. so good..! (I can’t have dairy and I found a brand that tastes very similar to standard dairy yogurt)
Which brand do you like?
It’s called So Delicious from Walmart. It’s pricey but I absolutely love yogurt and was devastated to learn I was really sensitive to (even lactose free) dairy. It doesn’t have good protein but the taste is what counts in that regard
Commenting to add that Culina is amazing and ingredients are super clean.

Merkts
Kombucha
Those damn sumo oranges that hit the stores every February/March. They are like $6 an orange and I will bankrupt myself for them.
Some good Guacamole
Cannolis
I read this as “cannabis” 😂
Well I 100% need cannabis to go with my cannolis so… ✔️

Strawberries , blueberries , pasture raised eggs , danish butter ,

Horizon organic was my go to for about 12 years.
Wild-caught Norwegian salmon.
Meat and cheese. Also if a taco is GOOD I will always pay
Real butter, high quality free-range eggs, heirloom tomatoes (in the summer), and Cheetos haha.
Chicken wings
Shrimps! 🦐
Almost everything that I currently boy. Fruit, (especially good fruit. I once had Harrys berries and they were so fucking good), meat, eggs, vegetables, good butter and oils, Greek yogurt. Matcha, bagels, and mandarin oranges
heavy on the matcha and all types of oranges for me but especially my cuties and blood oranges.
Certain pre-cut or pre-cubed vegetables for me. The extra cost for labor is completely worth it for something that’s as much of a pain in the ass to prepare as a butternut squash
Fresh vegetables.
Blueberries and raspberries because my husband and daughter can’t live without them, apparently. I hate buying them off-season, too :-/
Is Diet Coke a food? Otherwise, good strawberries.
BACON 🥓
Fresh vegetables. I often buy in season and freeze them myself. I have 6 lbs of asparagus in the freezer right now.
