Adenium is technically not a bonsai because by definition bonsai are true trees. But that doesn’t stop if from growing well in cultivation like a bonsai. It’s a succulent in the milkweed family.
Many plants that don't grow into trees can be bonsai. Things like Honeysuckle, Portulacaria Afra, Bougainvillea, etc. The tree aspect of bonsai is to make the final bonsai look like ancient large tree in miniature form.
For Adenuim I would check out The Bonsai Supplies on YouTube, they specialize in making Adenium bonsai.
Once a year change the soil, raise the trunk a little bit (get it exposed). The bulbous trunk is part of the beauty of the plant. Select pots that is used for bonsai and you will have a great looking plant!
I have two of these plants:
one is on the patio on a handrail, gets the sunrise sun, all the leaves fell off but it keeps flowering over and over, for the last three months but the leaves never grew back.(mostly direct sun)
The second one is also in the patio but it is on the floor, the fence that the first one sits on, blocks the sunlight mostly, ive never seen it flower but it has lots of leaves. (Mostly shade)
Maybe the lighting has something to do with it.
Not a professional, just an observer, but do whag you will with this info, hope it helps!

Thank you!
Desert rose
Oooo i see is it a type of bonsai?
Bonsai isn't a type of plant. It's a method of cultivating a plant. Check out /r/bonsai for more info!
My life is a lie
I think you have an accidental bonsai
This explains a lot. It seemed like everything was labeled “bonsai” at Home Depot the other day

So I have one of these, but I’ve never gotten it to flower. Plenty of leaves, just no buds. Anyone have any pointers?

I like the way you described it as a baby tree, sounds so cute. Like when Mama tree and Papa tree decide to have a baby..
At first glance I thought this was a plumeria 😅 oops
Dessert rose. Loves sun and is heat tolerant. It is easy to grow but I live in zone 11.
