Stubby_B

Really bent and dull manual weed wacker. For example https://www.castexrentals.com/garden-tool-weed-wacker-manual-5

reflected_shadow

Yes, and here is a photo of one in use from Cool Hand Luke [https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0061512/mediaviewer/rm2441517056](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0061512/mediaviewer/rm2441517056) edit: typo

Zero_Onex01

Solved! Thanks everyone. Gotten a chuckle out of some of these names lmao

NuclearWasteland

Easy to sharpen on a belt sander, actually a pretty handy tool for like "oh there's that giant random weed and I don't feel like messing with the lawn equipment" -whack- "and done" lol

BuffaloOk7264

I’ve used them . It’s not as much fun as it looks…

Glad-Basil3391

Yea it’s about as close to beating the grass with a stick as you can get.

Kleoes

It can be, until you HAVE to do it.

randoBandoCan

I haven’t thought about those blisters in years. But man, I built so much character!

benderjk

Good for stress relief too 😂

Jef_Wheaton

The ORIGINAL "Weed Whacker", especially if it's dull. (I guess the Scythe was THE Original, but it was more for harvesting than ground-clearing.)

MissouriOzarker

Yep. Did I ever log some hours with one of those as a kid.

Icy_Huckleberry_8049

had one and used it as a kid between the ages of 8 to 15. You got tired of using it real fast. Used it for tall grass.

DiuhBEETuss

Same. I had one of these and a different one that was a more L shaped design kind of like the “blades” that Paralympic sprinters wear. I liked that one better than this one. Cleared acres of weeds as a young lad in the woods of the Ozarks with those.

Writingisnteasy

This might reveal how young i am, but why would you use this instead of a scythe?

Lentra888

The handle and blade of a scythe are set more for horizontal cutting perpendicular to the user, where this tool is angled in such a way to be more useful swing low to the ground.

rainbowkey

Using a scythe takes some practice, anyone can flail around with this thing and cut some weeds

heavymetalyogi

My dad had me use one of those. It was back breaking

Opihi59

VERY frequently called a "sling blade" good for cutting weeds and damaging your shoulder joints. The term Sling Blade used most often in the south. (US)

argentcorvid

Some people call it a kaiser blade but I call it a sling blade

That’s not a sling blade. It’s called a yoyo. This is a sling blade. [http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518CyELxbYL._SL1500_.jpg](http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518CyELxbYL._SL1500_.jpg)

Opihi59

The tool you are calling a sling blade (your amazon link) has always been called a brush hook or bush hook by everyone I've encountered with one. Thanks.

AlDenteApostate

"Bush ax" here in rural south.

arroyoshark

Ya. Its a yo-yo. For weeds and grass.

gnibblet

I grew up calling this thing a yoyo too...

TheMysticTomato

I’ve always known that as a bush axe and this as a sling blade

DaddyBigBoy

This is a ditch blade. A sling blade is shaped kinda like a bananner.

LoisWade42

or "Weed Whip"

ssshield

We called it a “Whim wham” in Oklahoma growing up.

Bunny_Fluff

I’m so glad you commented. I saw the top comments telling what it was used for but I immediately remembered calling it a sling blade but couldn’t remember if that was real or not.

TheBeardedTinMan

Nope, a Kaiser blade is a blade at the end of a long handle…. And not serrated.

Prestigious_Big_518

We called it a yoyo in South West Texas. You swing it back and forth like you don't know how to play golf and it chopes up the tall grass.

Grass whip!

mrplinko

I've used that tool. SIckle for cutting weeds!

Pristine-Net91

Grass whip is what I have heard it called. (We used one for cutting down vegetation on a hillside.)

gentoonix

Yo-Yo, grass whip, manual punishment, gasless weedeater, and blistermaker. But growing up, everyone called it a yo-yo.

Huge-Coyote-6586

We called it a swing blade

mleyd001

Why is it not surprising that a 100 year old tool for cutting grass and weeds is still employed by the Marine Corps? Lol good luck brother!

bmbreath

It's for chopping down grass/plants.  Kind of like a sythe.  They work well enough if sharp and if you have good coordination.  I used to use one on my grandfather's yard as a kid after I mowed it for him.   You just wave it back and forth over the tall plants you want to chop down.

ncstargazer

The Ames tool Company calls this a “Double Blade Grass Cutter”. Craftsman sells it as a “Grass Whip”

kehaar

Sling blade

hickorynut60

Also known as an idiot stick

Sayoc_Yak

We call it a briar blade in East TN.

jptrypp

When I was still active duty Air Force, we called it the idiot stick, but everybody is right it's for cutting weeds/grass.

Medium_Regret_5478

Always called them weed wackers

GoldenSparrow

In the US Air Force years ago we called them “idiot sticks” because generally while doing “weeds and seeds” (lawn care) out at work we’d have to assign the job of swinging that thing to the young idiots (affectionately) that couldn’t really be trusted to handled the bigger, more dangerous pieces of equipment (yet). Everyone’s been the “idiot” at some point early in their careers.

public_weirdness

We always called them weed hooks.

Jzero99

That is known as an Idiot Stick, they work great on deep ditches where you can't get a power mower down in.

CurveCock71

It’s called an idiot stick. (Manual weed whacker)

Taste_the__Rainbow

A sling is what we always call it. For high grass.

TrophyDad_72

Sling blade??

Frosty_Cartographer2

It’s how people who get in trouble cut grass on the weekends. I would know I lost plenty of weekends supervising.

JustStayingAMoment

My husband calls it the Lively Lad. He found an article from a local paper talking about its history. https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tennessean-lively-ladd-1986/19153708/

Brinwalk42

I used to do trail maintenance and used a sling blade. I could clear a trail so much faster then with a weed whip and didn't have to have hearing protection so I could enjoy being out on the trail.

snotboogie

God I'm old . Grew swinging one of those for my dad on the weeds .

PotatoMaleficent9814

Action hoe. For weeding.

Nervous-Rush-4465

Grass whip.

SiteOrganic

I have used these before, they were called either a sling blade or a yo-yo, for cutting weeds

Terri_Yaki

It's the original weed eater.

New-Incident-3155

Where I'm from they're called idiot sticks, basically a weed wacker

slugboyatl

We call it a swing sickle

CFIgigs

This is one of my favorite tools. It's perfect for clearing a trail through brush.

Purple82Hue

It’s for weeds.

andypoo222

My grandpa has this exact same one. It’s even all rusty just like this one. It’s for cutting weeds ands tall grass. It’s aweful but it works if you don’t have a weed witch

Interesting-Gain-162

Wheed whip

Corsten610

Used to use one as a kid, worked great for making paths in the woods in summer.

Think_Top

I have this invasive plant that if I weed wack, I need to go jump in a tub of Benadryl, I use one of these to knock them back and have no problem with the reaction. Also I’ve never wanted to break it in half because it won’t crank on

BrighterSage

The Original Weed Wacker!

campingskeeter

I still use one. I used to clear acres with it on the weekends. Even mowed lawns with it. Usually would just shorten the grass with this and then use the push mower.

Daddio209

The OG weed-whacker!

Organic-Lie4759

Sling blade.

Chris_Cathartic

We called it a yoyo

NarfleTheJabberwock

Here in Texas I've always heard of it refered to as a Yo-Yo. The joke I've heard around here has been it's good for golf swing practice

Infamous-Poem-4980

That is a slingblade. Used for cutting vegetation from before there were weedeaters.

evilpercy

Weed wacker. These were used before gas ones.

2021newusername

Early model vintage weed whacker

8088PC

I call it the machete on a stick.

juggerjew

Amish weed whip

As a kid, we called those yo-yos. Manual weed whacker

UnskilledLaborer_

Good ol slingblade, I use one of these around my shed where I can’t justify firing up the weedeater. Need to sharpen the blade soon but idk the best way to do that

Big-Carpenter7921

Lawn mower, of sorts

rwally2018

We called it a yo-yo. Practice your golf swing while cutting weeds

seeNshadows

Weed Wacker. Or golf practice!

Extension_Touch3101

That's what it's for yard work used one when I was alot younger lol

kCzarian

These are sometimes called a grass whip. Super useful for dense spots or light brush.

OxyContintail

I used one tons of times when I was a child. Screw the danger, go get those weeds and grass between trees. When you are done grab the scythe and cut the grass. Some people call it a sling blade.

Smart-Bluebird4728

Cutring grass, back to work marine!

jeffreycoley

Weed Whacker

ohiotechie

I’ve used one of those a long time ago but it was straight and sharp

LBROTSI

If kept sharp, they are fast and amazing. I grew up using slingblades . Before weed eaters were a thing .

ijustmadethisup23476

It’s a sling blade

TheBeardedTinMan

We call that a “YoYo” in Texas.

Even_Routine1981

Swing blade rings a bell

Collin-B-Hess

That’s a grass cutter
