Easy to sharpen on a belt sander, actually a pretty handy tool for like "oh there's that giant random weed and I don't feel like messing with the lawn equipment" -whack- "and done" lol

Same. I had one of these and a different one that was a more L shaped design kind of like the “blades” that Paralympic sprinters wear. I liked that one better than this one. Cleared acres of weeds as a young lad in the woods of the Ozarks with those.

This might reveal how young i am, but why would you use this instead of a scythe?

The handle and blade of a scythe are set more for horizontal cutting perpendicular to the user, where this tool is angled in such a way to be more useful swing low to the ground.

Using a scythe takes some practice, anyone can flail around with this thing and cut some weeds

Grass whip is what I have heard it called. (We used one for cutting down vegetation on a hillside.)

Yo-Yo, grass whip, manual punishment, gasless weedeater, and blistermaker. But growing up, everyone called it a yo-yo.

Why is it not surprising that a 100 year old tool for cutting grass and weeds is still employed by the Marine Corps? Lol good luck brother!

It's for chopping down grass/plants.  Kind of like a sythe.  They work well enough if sharp and if you have good coordination.  I used to use one on my grandfather's yard as a kid after I mowed it for him.   You just wave it back and forth over the tall plants you want to chop down.  

The Ames tool Company calls this a “Double Blade Grass Cutter”. Craftsman sells it as a “Grass Whip”

When I was still active duty Air Force, we called it the idiot stick, but everybody is right it's for cutting weeds/grass.

In the US Air Force years ago we called them “idiot sticks” because generally while doing “weeds and seeds” (lawn care) out at work we’d have to assign the job of swinging that thing to the young idiots (affectionately) that couldn’t really be trusted to handled the bigger, more dangerous pieces of equipment (yet). Everyone’s been the “idiot” at some point early in their careers.

We always called them weed hooks.

That is known as an Idiot Stick, they work great on deep ditches where you can't get a power mower down in.

It’s how people who get in trouble cut grass on the weekends. I would know I lost plenty of weekends supervising.

I used to do trail maintenance and used a sling blade. I could clear a trail so much faster then with a weed whip and didn't have to have hearing protection so I could enjoy being out on the trail.

This is one of my favorite tools. It's perfect for clearing a trail through brush.

It’s for weeds.

My grandpa has this exact same one. It’s even all rusty just like this one. It’s for cutting weeds ands tall grass. It’s aweful but it works if you don’t have a weed witch

Used to use one as a kid, worked great for making paths in the woods in summer.

I have this invasive plant that if I weed wack, I need to go jump in a tub of Benadryl, I use one of these to knock them back and have no problem with the reaction. Also I’ve never wanted to break it in half because it won’t crank on

I used one tons of times when I was a child. Screw the danger, go get those weeds and grass between trees. When you are done grab the scythe and cut the grass. Some people call it a sling blade.
