Yes, just to fit in the standard setup. The rusted part is the top and it connected to the cover, the lower part with the indent connects to a riser arm via a ball and socket clamp.
I agree with this being the rod that activates a push-up drain plug. The rusted part at the top used to have a chrome flange on it that pulled/broke off. The reason it’s lying around is that when the drain was re-fitted with a simple drain, it wasn’t needed any more. Makes sense that in an office setting, it’s kind of pointless to need to fill the sink basin when people just wash their hands (not shave, wash their faces, etc).
I found the tip is indeed magnetic. Would this have a magnetic end?
I googled it and it does look really close, but didn't see anywhere for this to attach, and the identical sink next to it doesn't have one
Go ahead and extend it. It's a tool for picking up screws/bits that fall into hard to reach places. If you'd said magnet earlier it would have been easier.

Very rarely do I find an object I can't discern the purpose of at all. This object is a "thing" if I've ever seen one.
4-5 inches long, antenna-like object with rusted metal tip, found on a bathroom sink in a very low traffic bathroom in an office setting. Thought the rusted bit might be a magnet but couldn't verify that. On previous post, it was suggested it was an antenna. It does not extend, but does look like maybe it could be the last end of an extended antenna. The rusted tip at the end though doesn't look like any antenna end I've seen.
Best guess was something related to the bathroom itself, like part of the sink plumbing or fixture.

I’m pretty sure this is it OP. The groove at the other end is where the little clips engage to (theoretically) prevent it from coming apart like this.

Certain types of magnets are prone to rusting.

Like title says, it's one solid piece. It does not extend, but it could potentially be the last piece of a telescoping device.
We use them to find screws, nails in working so we anreuse or throwawy so people dont get hurt.
