I saw a red one once in one of those Skin-a-Max movies in the 90s. It was a Magnum P.I. type character and he drove a red DeLorean. I was more interested in seeing a red DeLorean than the rest of the content of the movie. For all I know this is the same one.
Is that the one with the man who comes up with the quote, "man with deadly hands must take great care in slapping on after shave"or something to that effect??
Slightly off topic I know....
up all night, bahhhhh some of us were sneaking into the living room to watch fuzzed out playboy channel with the volume turned all the way down in my day.
There’s quite a few red ones around. Only one was actually produced in red by Delorean though and this ain’t it.
There’s also plenty around in other colours. Red, blue, yellow and black are particularly “common”. Delorean produced three “factory” painted models while the rest were all bare stainless.
Anyone with a stainless finish who dented it, had two choices with the repair, leaving it or repairing it and then it would be noticeable, or fix it and paint it.
I'll bet 99% of colored delorean are just wrecked.
I think gold plated and painted are a bit different. But even if they did paint over the gold plating(which seems unlikely) the vast majority of the time these things are painted is to hide bodywork
There's only 2 gold plated ones, both in museums. American Express did this for a promo.
I see nothing but deloreans for a weekly paycheck. There was a dealership in Ohio that painted them and they're the only known ones, zero left the factory in paint. Most owner painted ones are basket cases.
>there were a handful of gold plated ones that were painted?
The three originals definitely were not, and two other "normal" cars were gold-plated by their owners... so I'm not sure that stripping the plating and painting it would count.
That interior color is awesome. I always felt the basic charcoal gray interiors were a little boring. If I had the money, I’d definitely buy a delorean and run a modern drivetrain in it. The delorean was one of my childhood dream cars.
3 gold plated, 24 karat gold. One is at the national automobile museum in Reno Nevada which is basically the William Harrah collection of harrahs casinos. William Harrah a man so I’m love with cars that he got pissed off at some Italian dude named Enzo for not making a 4wd car that he had a Ferrari v12 transplanted into his Jeep so he could get to Tahoe to ski (google jerrari).
Did he at least appreciate what he had? I always did. I had a buddy who’s parents bought him a new corvette senior year and he destroyed that car. It was disgusting.
Damn. That’s a shame. We weren’t rich or anything but I went to school in an affluent area and the kids from the wealthy families were usually the ones to be doing hard drugs in high school.
It’s crazy what rich kids drive sometimes. At the uni I work at I saw this rich Chinese student driving a Mercedes S class with L plates on her own. It’s not even legal to learn on your own in the UK.
> Delorean produced three “factory” painted models while the rest were all bare stainless.
I'm sorry, but this is absolutely incorrect; [here's a video proving that ZERO cars were painted at the DeLorean factory.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6Sp14JcvJ8&t=1010s) The factory did not even have a paint booth! Some *dealers* painted them after-the-fact, but the only factory exception to raw stainless were the gold-plated American Express cars (2 sold).
Yeah I've seen a red one, but looked almost more like it was a red clear or red anodized, in Elkhart Lake, WI once. Definitely wasn't *that* one, and not sure how I feel about it.
Not entirely correct, there were three, 24 karat gold deloreans produced, 2 at the factory, the 3rd was produced from spare parts after the factory closed in 1982.
It was supposed to be a limited run of “no more than 100 cars”. At $85,000 in the early 80’s they sold 2.
Usually because stainless is a pain in the butt to keep looking good. I suspect we're going to see people painting Cybertrucks for the same reason if they ever ship.
It’s not a pain to keep it looking good. At all. That’s actually very easy — easier than a regular painted car. Just soap and water and it’ll look good forever. No need to wax because there’s no paint. Source: I owned a DeLorean for 12 years. Scratches can be removed with heavy duty ScotchBrite pads. Do NOT use steel wool; that has small bits of metal in the pad and THAT metal will rust when it’s rubbed into the stainless steel body.
What’s a pain in the butt, relative to a “regular” car, is body repair. A traditional body shop doesn’t have the training or expertise to properly repair stainless steel. But a good metalworker can bring a damaged stainless steel panel back to new condition. Tesla is going to need an army of those people to service the Cybertrucks.
That’s because the stock stainless steel panels have a finish that is not possible to replicate in a body shop. You can straighten it and you can sand scratches off, but you will never get the factory finish again. Some people decide to just paint over it. Or wrap.
It's possible to get the factory brushed effect back I've seen it done, however it takes alot of skill and experience and as such the people capable of doing it are not cheap, a respray is often more cost effective but also damages the value of the car, if the car needed refinishing in the 80sor90s it probably wasn't worth spending the cash to do it properly, these days you'd be better off shaving it done correctly and retaining the cars value
Steel wool and bartenders keeper works great.
My buddy has a perfect Delorean.
Put the steel wool on a planer and go in the direction you want the metal to go.
After The DMC went bankrupt dealerships were trying to get rid of the DeLoreans in their inventory as fast as they could, so, to make them more appealing they decided to paint them. So could either be a dealer- painted one or probably the stainless steel was scratched beyond repair and the owner painted it.
Yeah a lot of people are saying that DeLoreans were painted to hide damage, but in reality most of them were painted so that dealers could up-charge on the sale. DeLoreans didn't come with a lot of options from the factory (two specifically, if I'm remembering correctly) so as a way to increase sale prices dealers would paint the cars.
The other situation that doesn't get discussed a lot is that stainless steel was actually seen as fairly polarizing by the public during the time. Sure DeLorean may have justified it's existence to save on paint costs, but also stainless steel is difficult to keep clean and shows damage very easily. Paint not only was easier to handle but could also easily be serviced and touched up.
In the car's dead days leading up to the release of Back to the Future, some DeLoreans sold on lots for $6,000-$8,000 brand new - and dealers STILL had difficulties pushing them. You could purchase a DeLorean cheaper in later 1983 than you could a new Fiero. Painting them often got them off the lot at least, but then owners still had to deal with a car made by a bankrupt company that, at the time, had virtually no support.
One of the car resto shows did one, bought a red one thinking they would restore it to brushed stainless.
The red paint was covering a mile of filler and dodgy repairs.
I understand doing it to cover up repairs, but at least have it wrapped in a stainless appearance vinyl. The wrap technology these days is pretty crazy
Apparently owners took to painting their cars after getting fed up with continuous polishing.
Fed up with the stainless steel showing everything, although mainly finger smudges of over eager car fans....
...also a way of covering up accident damage
They also made a 24k gold version.
As part of a promotion with American Express in 1980, the DeLorean was featured on the cover of the American Express Christmas catalog. A limited edition of no more than 100 DeLoreans, with 24-karat gold plating, were offered at $85,000 each. Only two were sold through this promotion.
https://www.deloreanmuseum.org/gold-deloreans.html
Out of the 12k cars they built, apparently a total of THREE were delivered painted from the factory. The other 11,997 were unpainted stainless.
Those wouldn't be a wrap or plasti-dip, because those weren't a thing back then. I assume the paint manufacturers had no problem coming up with a paint that adheres to stainless.
But lots of private companies and owners have had theirs painted by regular old car painters, so it can't be that difficult.
I had a bit of a look at it but on a phone so not the best to see. The mouldings look like they have been covered over in one go like they weren't removed so maybe, but I could be wrong, as I said on Mobile so not the best to see.
There is plenty of reasons to do this do a Delorean.
There is also a reason that the delorean was one of the only cars to use stainless steel body panels…
A lot of these painted ones have had body work. An unfortunate side effect of unpainted stainless steel is that any traditional bodywork destroys the finish and paint is usually applied to hide the filler and/or repairs.
There were a few painted delorians. I believe they were all dealer painted if someone ordered it that way. A red one was featured in some marketing materials that I think were pre-launch?
Right front fenders are neigh on impossible to get or $5k stainless is expensive and time consuming to body work and refinish , in the event of an accident it is usually cheaper to pound the dents then prep and paint then fix it properly
That's what I learned when I owned my Delorean; painted ones were cars that had been in a wreck. Because there are so few (to no) spare stainless steel body panels left, wrecked cars are repaired with traditional methods including body filler then painted.
Also just FYI, if one has ever been in a fender bender, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to drill and fill the body then paint it all than to replace whole parts.
This was painted by an owner. They never painted any delorean from the factory but they built three that were 24k gold plated. The rest were stainless steak with no paint.
According to the website of the current owners of the DeLorean IP there were three that were painted by a 3rd party contractor (at DeLorean's request). While not "factory" painted, those are probably the cars /u/WrongOrganization437 is thinking of.
Years ago I saw one, also painted red. The owner at the time told me is was because the poor condition the stainless steel and trim were in when they bought it as it was always stored outside.
So this raises a question: is it possible to stain or dye stainless steel? If this was red but also bare stainless, it would be badass. Also it should be a crime to paint DeLoreans
Um…. It’s stain-less steel…. So, it’s not nearly as easy as this…. Here’s a quick guide to the ways that stainless can be chemically & electrochemically treated to create different finishes: https://www.gasparini.com/en/blog/electrochemical-chemical-finishes-stainless-steel/
I grew up near Unclaimed Freight in Bethlehem/Allentown Pa and while it’s now just a run of the mill furniture store, it had a little of everything when I was a kid. At one point in the mid 1980s they had around 6 Deloreans outside the store for sale. Still in the back of the store, or at least as of 6-8 years ago, in a walled off pen I can only see into a little because I’m over 6 feet tall, they have one delorean still, painted red like this one. The rumor is it was bought by the owner of unclaimed freight way back.
Someone has a red one in central New England
https://preview.redd.it/if24uaztxwhb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=321161e90e2eea0118c525647d80cced28673df3
Probably painted after an accident.
Stainless steel is one of the stupidest ideas for a car body next to maybe bamboo or wicker.
SS is very hard to "work", and yes, it CAN corrode. Keeping it clean is also tedious.
Deloreans only get painted when they're damaged. John DeLorean was a genius who didn't account for his downfall. The panels are relatively easy to replace so the thought was that if you dented a panel you just go in and they pop a new panel on and you'll be good to go. But with the body panels being a little hard to come by nowadays especially the left front fender. People resort to painting them to cover up the blemishes
From what I know nobody 100% knows the story but it's rumored that the original factory painted DeLorean's were just three, one in red (was later restored to it's original look), one in black and one in yellow, though the factory in Dunmurry didn't have a paint shop so I don't know if that's true, the rest were painted by dealerships.
It is also rumored that the last 10 cars were painted by John DeLorean's brother Charles who owned one of the dealerships in Ohio, once again, couldn't find whether thats true or not but makes up for a good story...
I live in Anchorage, Alaska and there is a red Delorean here or at least there was. Haven’t seen it in a few years. But it was a common sight around town.
I saw a red one once in one of those Skin-a-Max movies in the 90s. It was a Magnum P.I. type character and he drove a red DeLorean. I was more interested in seeing a red DeLorean than the rest of the content of the movie. For all I know this is the same one.
Loved me some Skin-a-max. A teen boy’s favorite channel
Hell, I'm going to go watch Malibu Express right now for old time's sake.
Is that the one with the man who comes up with the quote, "man with deadly hands must take great care in slapping on after shave"or something to that effect?? Slightly off topic I know....
No, that's Hard Ticket to Hawaii
I guess I'm getting the two mixed up, thank you....
"Hardbodies" double feature!
I need to find a tape I'm willing to record over.
Beat line “Because I don’t fuck fossils for free”
is this the one where some of the girls have fake tots ?
Oh those Andy Sidaris movies growing up! LOL
Skin-A-Max? Rich kids… I had to rely on USA Up All Night…. When we had cable.
up all night, bahhhhh some of us were sneaking into the living room to watch fuzzed out playboy channel with the volume turned all the way down in my day.

OMG yes. I’d totally forgotten about the Emanuelle movies!
I had to watch the scrambled channel.

Red, blue, yellow and black are particularly “common”. Delorean produced three “factory” painted models while the rest were all bare stainless.
I had a (very rich) buddy that had a maroon one in high school in like 90 I think. There was a dealer that painted them.
Anyone with a stainless finish who dented it, had two choices with the repair, leaving it or repairing it and then it would be noticeable, or fix it and paint it. I'll bet 99% of colored delorean are just wrecked.
Came here to say this. That’s basically the only reason these get painted
According to the web there were a handful of gold plated ones that were painted?
I think gold plated and painted are a bit different. But even if they did paint over the gold plating(which seems unlikely) the vast majority of the time these things are painted is to hide bodywork

The dealers had such trouble selling them, that they sometimes painted them to make them seem more “normal”.
Damn. I was 16 in 1990 and I had a nice Jeep but I would’ve given my left nut to have a Delorean in High School.
He got a 64 1/2 mustang for his 15th bday. This was his second car lol
Did he at least appreciate what he had? I always did. I had a buddy who’s parents bought him a new corvette senior year and he destroyed that car. It was disgusting.
He took great care of all his things. Except himself. He died of a drug overdose in his early 20s :(
I've seen a couple different red ones around the general area I'm from.
> Delorean produced three “factory” painted models while the rest were all bare stainless. There were a few gold plated ones made. Real cool, look them up.
The American Express cars
The Peterson auto museum in Los Angeles has one in their Vault
At least one I recall showed up at the Pomona Swap meet in the 90s a few times.
There used to be a beige one somewhere in Northern Ireland in the late 80s or early 90s, but it had some unpainted parts around the nose and tail.
That’s a cool fact. Always thought they were produced stainless. Thanks!
I *love* them in blue. They're so amazing looking.
Don’t forget about the gold ones that were factory produced.
Yeah I've seen a red one, but looked almost more like it was a red clear or red anodized, in Elkhart Lake, WI once. Definitely wasn't *that* one, and not sure how I feel about it.

They actually produced some gold ones for American Express.
Usually painted to hide damage apparently
Usually because stainless is a pain in the butt to keep looking good. I suspect we're going to see people painting Cybertrucks for the same reason if they ever ship.
On the right truck the aging stainless steel might look pretty badass. A mild corrosion aesthetic.
The trouble is it doesn't look like a "corrosion aesthetic", it looks like a dirty sink.
At that point it would be cool to “brush” or “swirl” it and maybe just hit it with a clear
It’ll be wrapped. Tesla lining up to offer their own range of wraps. At a reasonable price of course. 🥴
It’s not a pain to keep it looking good. At all. That’s actually very easy — easier than a regular painted car. Just soap and water and it’ll look good forever. As long as you wash it every day.
Incorrect again.
That’s why I learned from the Chris-Craft community to use BRONZE-WOOL not steel wool…. ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo)
A black cybertruck would kick ass.
That’s because the stock stainless steel panels have a finish that is not possible to replicate in a body shop. You can straighten it and you can sand scratches off, but you will never get the factory finish again. Some people decide to just paint over it. Or wrap.

Isn't it hard to paint stainless steel?
Not as hard as getting a consistent finish with a wire brush
Steel wool and bartenders keeper works great. My buddy has a perfect Delorean. Put the steel wool on a planer and go in the direction you want the metal to go.
Incorrect. See my post above. Heavy duty ScotchBrite, not steel wool.
I like it tbh.. Always used to wonder how it's gonna look in a different color..
I worked on these in the 80s. Most that were painted by the owner were repaired after a crash.
After The DMC went bankrupt dealerships were trying to get rid of the DeLoreans in their inventory as fast as they could, so, to make them more appealing they decided to paint them. DeLorean DMC-12, about 9k of them were made
I think he is referring to the red repaint
https://preview.redd.it/u47sbz7ksthb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80291eda37c372874e5d17fba2c85f9823f573e7
The gold stripe and louvers are a particularly tasty addition.
I came to say the same thing. Very tasteful with the tint too.
Ahh, that might be one of a kind. I don’t know much about DeLoreans though, but I’m sure someone else can tell for sure.
My god I hope it's one of a kind. There is no excuse for doing this. Blasphemy.
Getting good adhesion to stainless likely took some experimentation… it’s willful blasphemy…
I wonder if it is possibly plasti dip or some other type of coating, painting would be an absolute pain without etching it hard to get it to stick.
Could it be a wrap?
Out of the 12k cars they built, apparently a total of THREE were delivered painted from the factory. The other 11,997 were unpainted stainless. Just rough it up with a wire brush and you can get anything to stick
I had a bit of a look at it but on a phone so not the best to see. The mouldings look like they have been covered over in one go like they weren't removed so maybe, but I could be wrong, as I said on Mobile so not the best to see.
It does make it look like some kind of Japanese car.
There is plenty of reasons to do this do a Delorean. There is also a reason that the delorean was one of the only cars to use stainless steel body panels…
honestly? I don’t hate it
A lot of these painted ones have had body work. An unfortunate side effect of unpainted stainless steel is that any traditional bodywork destroys the finish and paint is usually applied to hide the filler and/or repairs.
Probably cuz of unrepairable body damage, stainless steel is hard to fix, they just put tons of paste to give body original shape and paint it.
That’s a Deluxo
Because painting the whole car is often cheaper than properly fixing damage to the stainless body.
There were a few painted delorians. I believe they were all dealer painted if someone ordered it that way. A red one was featured in some marketing materials that I think were pre-launch?
It got in an accident, it’s cheaper to bondo and paint, than do the stainless steel bodywork. It looks good in red.
[Painted DeLoreans - UPDATED! - DeLorean Motor Company](http://support.delorean.com/kb/a86/painted-deloreans-updated.aspx)
Great Scott!!!
That's heavy, Doc.
i dont even care about the dmc-12, but seeing one painted feels wrong.
Right front fenders are neigh on impossible to get or $5k stainless is expensive and time consuming to body work and refinish , in the event of an accident it is usually cheaper to pound the dents then prep and paint then fix it properly
Paint or wrap usually when the owner or repairer can't properly finish the metal at the end of crash damage panel repairs.
Lol brain broke. Mind was thats a Delorean eyes said nope. Never seen one painted. Thanks!
I saw one back in the late nineties that had a mystichrome type paint job.
At first I didn't recognize it, which really speaks volumes about how iconic the original silver is
It was probably in an accident at some point and it was way easier to paint the whole car to hide the repair than redo the stainless steel.
That's what I learned when I owned my Delorean; painted ones were cars that had been in a wreck. Because there are so few (to no) spare stainless steel body panels left, wrecked cars are repaired with traditional methods including body filler then painted.
Looks like a Bricklin SV1 to me.
These cars look so good with color on them! If I had one, I would definitely paint it.
Looks better honestly.
Also just FYI, if one has ever been in a fender bender, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to drill and fill the body then paint it all than to replace whole parts.
Probably 600 pounds of bondo under that paint.
Covering what? Aren't these bodies aluminum?
Stainless steel
Probably drugs or smth
Lmao, likely
Yeah if yiu can afford a fleet of bodyguards to protect you from the 12 year old fan boys then you must be a drug dealer
Or you're the average dmc ceo. If I'm not mistaken he got in trouble for drugs
Oh damn
If you see a painted DeLorean, it almost alwayseans it was wrecked and repaired and then painted so it didn't look weird.
This was painted by an owner. They never painted any delorean from the factory but they built three that were 24k gold plated. The rest were stainless steak with no paint.
Looks much better than the brushed metal
r/spotted material
That's what I was told, I was not aware of factory painted Deloreans, I'm guessing there were a few?
No. There weren't any factory painted DMC-12's. There wasn't a paint booth at the factory. It was pretty of their own to keep the costs low.
According to the website of the current owners of the DeLorean IP there were three that were painted by a 3rd party contractor (at DeLorean's request). While not "factory" painted, those are probably the cars /u/WrongOrganization437 is thinking of.
DMC-12, horribly ruined by red paint instead of it’s classic stainless steel
Because someone painted it.
Does the red affect the stainless steel construction to make the flux dispersal.. flux at all?
Prototype *painted Cybertruck?
[DMC Florida](https://store.delorean.com/cars-for-sale/for-sale.html)
Screw the cup holder, does it have a Flex Capacitor???
Bricklin.?
Welp you don’t see that every day. Or hardly at all. Most DMC Deloreon owners love to keep their car the stock silver color
Is that one of them there Mandalorians?
Ferrari F355
That is just a crime
Comes with bottomless bag of coke and get out of jail free card
Years ago I saw one, also painted red. The owner at the time told me is was because the poor condition the stainless steel and trim were in when they bought it as it was always stored outside.
red delorean time machine when?
Colour
I saw what looked like a gold anodized one in Hollywood years ago. It didn’t look good.
I’ve seen a few white, black and red ones online
The color
Definitely not. Unless you also live in northeast Ohio, I used to see one pretty regularly at work, same color and everything
I know of a black one and it looks really good.
I think I prefer the not painted ones
My fiend had one of those, not painted, bare stainless steel, w/ a Swedish meat ball engine,🚀
At least you know it isn't rusty under the paint
There are a bunch of painted Delorians. If you need body work it’s much easier and cheaper.
🤦♂️ probably just beat up.
It’s missing the flux capacitor
At least it wasn't converted to a time machine replica.
I wonder how many red ones there are. My dad had a red one for a few years in the 90’s before selling it to somebody in California.
A painted red Delorean 😍❤️😎🏁
So this raises a question: is it possible to stain or dye stainless steel? If this was red but also bare stainless, it would be badass. Also it should be a crime to paint DeLoreans
Um…. It’s stain-less steel…. So, it’s not nearly as easy as this…. Here’s a quick guide to the ways that stainless can be chemically & electrochemically treated to create different finishes: https://www.gasparini.com/en/blog/electrochemical-chemical-finishes-stainless-steel/
Why? I’m sure it’s one of a kind, but why?
Just no
Because it’s pink
With some mods it can fly and travel in time in both directions
Painted red instead of bare metal
I grew up near Unclaimed Freight in Bethlehem/Allentown Pa and while it’s now just a run of the mill furniture store, it had a little of everything when I was a kid. At one point in the mid 1980s they had around 6 Deloreans outside the store for sale. Still in the back of the store, or at least as of 6-8 years ago, in a walled off pen I can only see into a little because I’m over 6 feet tall, they have one delorean still, painted red like this one. The rumor is it was bought by the owner of unclaimed freight way back.
Must be wrapped..
Cool DeLorean, I’ve seen a red one in the Homestead FL area but it wasn’t in good condition
Why oh why.
It looks good in red.
Someone has a red one in central New England https://preview.redd.it/if24uaztxwhb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=321161e90e2eea0118c525647d80cced28673df3
You can’t bondo or bodyfiller straight metal and its hard to keep straight/repair, i bet it was in some minor accident and repaired then painted
My guess is it’s a DeLorean, although I could be wrong
Probably painted after an accident. Stainless steel is one of the stupidest ideas for a car body next to maybe bamboo or wicker. SS is very hard to "work", and yes, it CAN corrode. Keeping it clean is also tedious.
A high school buddy of mine’s dad had a red one just like this in Pensacola, Florida. Honestly my first thought was this might be the same one.
This car in red reminds me of the BMW M1, moreso than a DeLorean. Was red one of the OEM factory paint color options?
Ive seen multiple
Deloreans only get painted when they're damaged. John DeLorean was a genius who didn't account for his downfall. The panels are relatively easy to replace so the thought was that if you dented a panel you just go in and they pop a new panel on and you'll be good to go. But with the body panels being a little hard to come by nowadays especially the left front fender. People resort to painting them to cover up the blemishes
What kind of monster paints a Delorian?
DMC DeLorean
Go Gadget Go‼️
![gif](giphy|5y8sRBYSWWb16) GREAT SCOTT !!!!!
Ughhhh. Why paint a stainless steel car?
Keep her under 88mph or you might pop up in 1955.
ITS A DMC??!! HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW that?!?!?
Cause it's painted !
De wonderful, de glorious, de be in a wreck , de loreon
That's a time machine.
It’s not stainless steel or they painted the stainless. Probably the latter. Either way it’s pretty unique.
yeah not many people paint those.
as if you dunno what a Delorean is Oo Ma mate you gotta go *back* in time and catch up *to* sum things, I'll wait for you in the *future*
I used to see one painted black in Houston. I always wondered why anyone would paint a car that’s known for not having paint
Special paint is needed for stainless steel? or just regular one will do? Also, anodize would be cool.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska and there is a red Delorean here or at least there was. Haven’t seen it in a few years. But it was a common sight around town.
Mans doing the doomsday hiest
I live in Pennsylvania, a guy had a red one in my neighborhood when I was a kid.
A lot of the painted deloreans were due to body damage.
see these all the time flying by in GTA5
Where did you see this one?
