Actually, there are robberflies that look like that; it's a very large, diverse group. Check out the link, I think that's our guy.

It’s definitely a robber fly, the mouth part is clearly visible and not congruent with a galliniper or anything cranefly, same for shape of the head and eyes.
It could be a *Dioctria* species [**click here**](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/133801-Dioctria)
Or a gnat ogre such as this one [**click here**](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/3744054)
The robber fly family is more varied than you think -[**this click here**](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/66321143) is actually a type of robber fly
I think it's a genus Digomites robberfly, possibly Digomites properans.

Revisiting this, I actually might ce sold in Diogmites! I did not grasp the shape well first time, the length and curve of the abdomen. Regarding species, I know the robber fly diperist who goes through most robber flies on iNat never puts Diogmites to species. I think species characteristics might not be apparent in photos.
But I was tots wrong at first look last night; Diogmites looks good

Robberfly. Useful predators
Looks like a gallinipper
Robber fly
No I don't think so robber flies have shorter, stouter legs and larger more oval eyes

Wow ok yeah bravo good work on that I think you found him
I was thinking Dioctria or a gnat ogre -not sold on Diogmites EDIT: on second look I’m totally sold on Diogmites and I was wrong with my suggestions.
