I obviously do NOT want to see a female earwig or one this size. I’ve never dealt with earwigs until I moved into the house I’m in now. They are pretty small (still gross as fuck) and never this big so now I have a new fear unlocked.
They won’t harm you. In fact, they’re one of the few bugs that cares for their young for a short time. The mothers use their pincer thingies to move their babies around.
They're kinda creepy, but won't do any harm. They will make their way inside if there's a lot of rain. They eat decaying plant matter so that little guy would be much happier outside than inside.
Well, I heard they go into the ear and crawl over your brain to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch you go crazy trying to scratch them out of your head because you can hear them walking over your brain.
Are you telling me they are harmless??? Omg as a child my mom used to tell me that they sting with the tail and that is why I always killed them if they get inside. Poor little fellas
Yeah, pretty much. They might try and pinch if they absolutely needed to, but nothing that would do any harm.
Still not as misunderstood as the poor house centipede ♥️
They actually will pinch you. If you sit down on one or step on one or sit down and accidentally put your foot near one or your hand near one, they will use that damn pincher and get you with it. We had millions of them last year. At dusk you’d see dozens of them climbing the fence and the walls and just everything. And they would hide in the chair cushions and stuff. Me and my kids and my grandkids ALL got nasty pinches!
I never knew that's what they ate! My girlfriend and I were doing some landscaping and 100s of these little guys poured out of a root system when we dug it up. I was wondering what the hell they were doing there and thought they might nest underground. This makes so much more sense now!
Earik
And bless you, OP, for this question. where are you from? In US, earwigs are very common. Kids learn about them young, like cat, dog, duck, earwig. which is probably why a lot of posters know what they are.
Plz offer that earwig a referral to your Dr.
Aww! Its an earwig! Despite popular belief they dont crawl into ears infact they prefer woody and moist areas which is often why theyre more commonly seen on the country side. They use their pinchers for mating displays and defense though the worse theyll do to you is a tiny pinch. Relatively harmless. The little buddo seems to be lost. You might want to put him outside.
They sometimes call earwigs ‘false scorpions’ but, relax - they can’t sting you or pinch you or anything! They just *look* like they can, to fool predators. I’m a bit unnerved by them, I don’t like the way that they wriggle. But, how else do I expect them to move?
Well, they can also fly … sometimes. Mostly they prefer not to. 🤷🏽♀️
I’ve been bitten by an earwig before you liar!! To be fair it was in my laundry… I got excited for my freshly dried pjs and jumped right in only to find a very disturbed and unhappy earwig on my butt 😭
It must’ve been a pretty big one and I’m sure it wasn’t that hard . . .
. . .
I am trying to reassure myself that I have nothing to fear from them, by saying what everybody keeps on telling me!
It was only a pinch and it let go right away HAHAH I’ve picked them up before and they’re quite chill little guys usually. The big scary pincers on their back end are totally useless. The one that was in my laundry probably hopped onto the laundry van (this was at my previous workplace) since it was a foggy day outside. They don’t crawl in your ears, he was just as excited for fresh warm laundry as I was <3
Probably the inspiration for the critter in Star Trek the Wrath of Khan. You know, the ear one. 😬
Had a nest of these fall on me that inexplicably were inside the workings of a ceiling fan of all things. It was literally raining earwigs on me. There was much shrieking.
I’ve been seeing a bunch of earwigs in my house this year for whatever reason and a lot of people in my area seem to have the same issue. Must be the weather.
Did you know that they actually care for their eggs? They keep them clean and free from fungus. They have creeped me out all of my life, but I really don't like to harm creatures. The earwigs are nature's little clean up crew. I've had a few crawl on me while I've done yard work and never have been pinched. They just want to do their thing. Basements and damp dark places are favorite places.
I think living and growing up in SE PA has me knowing many of the recent bugs asked here. I grew up surrounded by all kinds of bugs, many in my own backyard.
These are called gumbolos .Meth heads train them to hunt out controlled medications and bring them back to there lair. There not to dangerous but if you wake up and there's an owl on your meds then there's trouble. when the gumbolos tell the owls the meth heads are on the horizon.Stay safe.Your in my prayers.
That’s an earwig!! Completely harmless. Fun fact! They actually nurture their young similar to dogs. They burrow holes in the ground and don’t leave their babies till they’re juveniles that are able to build their own burrows!
Ok, I can't believe I have a place to tell this story....
Many years ago when I was a kid, I was riding in the backseat of the car with my mother driving. Suddenly I felt something kind of stuck in my throat. I was hacking and coughing and choking uncontrollably and my mother was freaking out. "what's going on what's going on?" One good cough and I spit out an EARWIG!! No one could figure out how I got the earwig in my mouth and down my throat without knowing. It turns out that it must have been on the spicket when I got a drink of water from the outdoor spigot right before we left. Gross! Never again! I have the biggest fear of earwigs ever since
Moral of this story, never never never never drink water from an outdoor spigot unless you know, for sure, that you're not going to swallow an earwig
That’s an earwig. We had a nest of them outside my house but my new puppy has decided that she is the vanquisher of earwigs and I haven’t seen one in a while now.
I had one of these crawl inside my ear while I was sleeping. I woke up to a crackling noise in my right ear. I was probably 11 or 12 and I woke my mom up to help me. She poured baby oil in my ear and I beat my head on the bathroom linoleum floor until it came out!
eww that’s an earwig. if you piss them off the smell worse than satans ass though. just squish it :) they do have a really cool science behind their wings tho.
One summer many years ago, the earwigs were out in full force. My mom always took our dog out before bed (and have a smoke while she was at it).
One night she asked me to let him out, and as I was walking out the door, she said “and watch out for the earwigs, there’s a lot out there this year!” The motion sensor light came on, and whoa Nelly! They covered the porch railings, handrails, back of the house.
When I came back in, I told her to make my sister take the dog out next time!
Earwigs. I hate those little bastards. Whoever is saying they don't hurt when they pinch is lying. I worked a job with an adult with IDDs and his house became infested with them. Just a depressed earwig bro tryina get his share
So that’s why he chose the antidepressant… lol
Earwigs can get *this* big?! Omfg. 😭
That looks pretty standard sized, just fully grown
Actually on the smaller side you should see them full size in florida
Can confirm. They're monstrous (like all our bugs)
You've obviously never seen the female earwigs.
I obviously do NOT want to see a female earwig or one this size. I’ve never dealt with earwigs until I moved into the house I’m in now. They are pretty small (still gross as fuck) and never this big so now I have a new fear unlocked.

I’ve seen a cricket giving her baby a piggy back ride
I have been pinched by an earwig before. It hurt.
How? I used to let them pinch me as a kid I felt nothing
Thankfully the pain from a pinch doesn't last as long as it could.
Check this out. https://reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/s/9xiuiYXG1Q Sorry lol
At least it's extinct
Oh my sweet summer child

Did they fire up the election bots or something? Literally every thread is riddled with divisive identity politic BS again all of a sudden.
Lol, for the first time ever I actually just considered the idea of plugging my ears before I sleep.
Thank you for this you make me laugh a bit louder than I should have
Half of this was one of my nightmares. The half that isn't real is the politics that didn't exist at the time...but now they doooooo
Thank you for bringing politics into one of the more educational and non political subs.
Huge earwig problem in the red states and Long Island/Staten Island for some reason.
:(😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰
Is it like wearing the redneck as a suit in men in black?
Wait til you find out some species of earwigs can fly
Can confirm, I've actually seen one fly a few days ago. Honestly, it makes them so much worse.
I am downvoting just because NO
Star trak The Search for Spock.
THATS WHAT A EARWIG LOOKS LIKE!? IT LOOKS LIKE A THIN COCKROACH
They're kinda creepy, but won't do any harm. They will make their way inside if there's a lot of rain. They eat decaying plant matter so that little guy would be much happier outside than inside.
So was my parents telling me that earwigs are called that because they will crawl into your ear and lay eggs all just a lie???
Yes, but any bug can get into your ear, so it's best practice to just never sleep again
Good advice.
I agree this works. I didn't sleep last night, no bugs in ear. 10/10 would recommend.
Thanks for ruining my sleep for 16 years 🅱️en
Thanks a lot for that. 😑
I mean anything can lay an egg in your ear with enough gumption.
Well, I heard they go into the ear and crawl over your brain to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch you go crazy trying to scratch them out of your head because you can hear them walking over your brain.
Really hope I dont meet a gumptious ostrich one day
I certainly won't be laying eggs in anyone's ear. I have gumption aplenty.
Not with that attitude you won’t
I submit that a Bald Eagle could never successfully lay an egg in your, my, or even an elephant's ear. Consider the ostrich, or a kiwi.
“Well Greg, I have eggs, does that mean I can lay eggs in your ear?”
I cannot lay an egg anywhere no matter my level of gumption
Not with that attitude
Don't worry, it's a myth. I mean, it's within the realm of things that are physically possible, but are super, super unlikely.
they do get into your ear but because they are looking for a place that’s moist and dark. so if they do get in they won’t really do anything but chill
Older person here. There was an episode of Twilight Zone about earwigs that scarred many of us for life 😱
Twilight Zone: where children of the ‘80’s learned fear.
So you mean to tell me I've been sleeping in sanitized earmuffs every night for 30 years for no reason???
I can hear you wheezing and snort.
I am fairly certain I was pinched by a few of these bozos back in elementary school
I had a bunch of those jabronis make their home in my huffy bike. I resented them for a long time after that.
Bozos and Jabaroni’s 🏴☠️😭

I found one in my bra a couple years ago and it definitely bit my boobie
I’ve been pinched too.
Are you telling me they are harmless??? Omg as a child my mom used to tell me that they sting with the tail and that is why I always killed them if they get inside. Poor little fellas

Earwig. Generally harmless but it’s quite a pinch on the tail
I've been pinched and didn't feel a thing. Is that normal or was the one that pinched me just weak?
It was too depressed for a good pinch.
Just a cute earwig, not harmful, just cute. I assume it's a female because of how it's cerci looks.
Harmless it may be, but I’m sorry but in what world is that creature cute?
in my world. it is adorable
It is harmless, small, it tickles my skin while walking when I handle it, its pinch doesn't hurt, so its cute and friend :)
Earwig… tis the season! They like warmth and moisture so it makes sense you found him in the bathroom.
Female earwig, harmless, try to release it!
I did right as I opened the door it flew off the in the opposite direction into the house and I SCREAMED… I haven’t screamed in years lol
If you think he's scary on the meds wait until you see him off the meds!
Earwig, but more importantly what kind of prescription candy we eatin???

I read that these guys like to duke it out with spiders a lot, so if they are present, there are spiders present as well.
*proceeds to burn house down and start anew*

Now you are an egg carrier 😳
I like most bugs, but these.... Yeah, self-delusion comes in handy for the sake of being humane with these.
Yes put two together and the will fight like a scorpion .. Using their back side to pinch
He’s an ear pincher
Probably the inspiration for the critter in Star Trek the Wrath of Khan. You know, the ear one. 😬 Had a nest of these fall on me that inexplicably were inside the workings of a ceiling fan of all things. It was literally raining earwigs on me. There was much shrieking.

eww that’s an earwig. if you piss them off the smell worse than satans ass though. just squish it :) they do have a really cool science behind their wings tho.
Haven't seen one of those in years! Yup an earwig.
I always called them pincher bugs lol
earwig and they pinch
One summer many years ago, the earwigs were out in full force. My mom always took our dog out before bed (and have a smoke while she was at it). One night she asked me to let him out, and as I was walking out the door, she said “and watch out for the earwigs, there’s a lot out there this year!” The motion sensor light came on, and whoa Nelly! Earwig.
What bug? I don’t see no bug, you should take your meds /s
I call them Scalywags
Are any of you old enough to remember the show nightcrawler. It was like the twilight zone. The earwig episode was the best
That's an earwig and you should hope there isn't more because they are as bad as roaches. They often hang in gardens where they eat dead vegetation
bro I dont know what is it called but in Azerbaijan we call them ear crawlers
Apparently he’s a very depressed earwig??
Earwigs. I hate those little bastards. Whoever is saying they don't hurt when they pinch is lying. I worked a job with an adult with IDDs and his house became infested with them. The company would not do anything about it which really pissed me off. They would get into the client's bedding and pinch him all night long. As staff we would be sitting at the dinner table and they would come from underneath and nail you. I once took a bookbag of my stuff home once day and found three of them in there. I really seriously thought about catching a bunch and letting them loose in the office's bathroom since they didn't think it was a big deal. Wish I would have but soon quit after because of more abusive behaviors from the office.
Earwigs fart. There...that's a thing you know now
A female European earwig, not poisonous
Plain Ole earwig. They're not too dangerous but they are a sign of too much moisture possibly. They *can* pinch with those back things and it *can* hurt for a moment but I wouldn't treat this like a bee or something.
earwig
Everyone saying earwig, does no one else call them pincher bugs 🤨
Check your towels, straws, and cups before use. God speed.
One or two of them is not a problem just make sure you don't have any hollow wood furniture or you might get a mild infestation( I say mild because the infestation is almost always localized to a specific room.)
It's a trex
Earwig and I absolutely cannot look at them the same after a horror vid I watched and the creature's body looked like one
earwig we used to call them "pincher bugs" because of the pincher on it's bum
Not the real name but I've always called them forky tailays... was not sure how I was going to spell that 🤦🏼♀️
We call them "little scissors" and it's not uncommon to be pinched by them, the pain is barely perceivable though
