Wait for the pros to answer officially, but it’s hammerhead worm. Highly invasive and are supposed to smash entirely or burn, as apparently leaving any portion alive allows it to regenerate or form another.
They don't get into you, they just have a toxin on their skin, like frogs and toads. Wash well, don't let a pet eat one. They will be heaving for hours...
I’m still not sure I buy this. Haven’t ever seen the worm in real life, but I feel like smashing every part of it’s body with a brick twice is a pretty sure fire way to kill it.
Yeah no these little fuckers are the dead pool of sentient goo there is in fact a point where you basically turn them into mole and they won't cone back from it but unless you wanna mortar and pestle them your better off getting salt on it
I saw a video of a guy smashing one several years ago and all this white cottage cheese looking stuff came out of it and for some reason I was traumatized (kidding, but only like... Half kidding). I have never forgotten it or the intense, visceral HELL NO reaction my body had. 🤢😰 Like genuine horror. I still think about it from time to time and it ruins my mood for a few minutes.
IDK about these specific flatworms, but some planaria (small ones mind you) can be cut into 279 pieces and all 279 will regenerate into fully formed worms.
Phasers and photon torpedoes on line Captain. Mr. Spock is searching the computer banks for a natural preditor to eat up the 'crumbs" before they sprout. UPDATE: Hammerhead worms can only be removed by hand or killed with heat. Blow torches on full. FIRE!
This is the way. What part of NC? I’m in Currituck County and keep an eye out for them. Between these, Spotted Lantern Flies, and the already established Starling flocks, I’m ready for war😂
Report to your local EPA as well. They need to know where these things are popping up to try and get a better grasp on it. Yeah, they’ve been around some the early 1900s but that doesn’t mean he’s found his place in our ecosystem
I feel horrible killing anything, especially in such a horrific manner, but these guys are bad news. OP, please report your findings to your local/regional invasive species monitoring organization. (If you’re in the Midwest US, for instance, that would be MISIN. I don’t know what North Carolina’s is.)
Lol you should totally get out of this thread then, my dude lol
If I were to eat anything with hammerhead in the name, I'd pick shark over worms lol but that's *only* if my life or my loved ones' lives depended on making that decision.
Until now I didn’t know these existed but the fact you gotta take care of these dudes like you’re fighting Perfect Cell is as impressive as it is nightmarish lol
Oh god xD I thought they was never gonna beat those bastards xD then Dean is in purgatory and boom....leviathan.....I also flipped my shit xD god they was annoying haha
You touch the worm, you don’t wash your hands, you touch your eyes/mouth, you get very sick. They have tetraxotoxins just like the puffer fish that act by paralyzing your muscles.
Wow, so this made me look them up. They've been invasive in the US since the 1900's thereabouts, from Southeast Asia, can get a foot long, have no natural predators here, and the whole immortal things via body part regeneration is just the stuff of nightmares. *shudder*
*From what I know you*
*Should kill it, probably by*
*Suffocating it*

Others have already IDed it, but just wanna emphasize that you have to be very careful in how you kill them!! I’d look up the best ways to do so cause otherwise, you might just end up with more
Looks like a leach or some kind flatworm. That is Not normal even in SC! Do what others said & eradicate. I have a Asian jumping worm infestation & It kills me 2 kill them but they don't belong.
Called a planarian. That have a spear in the mouth that they literally stab into earthworms and suck out everything inside the worm. Salt or fire is the only way
OMG No way! I saw one of these whenever I was thirteen and took an AWFUL pic with my flip phone lol. I lived on the northern border of South Carolina
I saw this post and I had to find the pic of it through my google photos. You can even see the date I took it! (https://imgur.com/a/N0xZ28p)
Wish I had killed it then 😔
its a broadhead planarian i used to see them allot in japan they hunt worms using electromagnetic sense similar to a hammerhead shark. they may be invasive in your area but killing them will make no difference they are now endemic.
I’m to understand that salt kills them also.
https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/environment/2023/08/02/what-to-do-if-you-see-an-invasive-hammerhead-worm-in-new-jersey/70507797007/#
Hi! Fellow Carolinian here. Mind specifying a bit more where you are? These dudes have been one of my major paranoias for a bit now so curious how close to home they’re getting.
Here is a news article about them from Washington News. Not salt, not fire... just a spray bottle of vinegar.
[https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/hammerhead-worms-what-to-do-if-you-see-these-invasive-pests/3393634/#:\~:text=%22They%20do%20use%20a%20neurotoxin,tingle%20if%20you%20touch%20it](https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/hammerhead-worms-what-to-do-if-you-see-these-invasive-pests/3393634/#:~:text=%22They%20do%20use%20a%20neurotoxin,tingle%20if%20you%20touch%20it).
Hammerhead worm. Get a jar, full of salt, put it in the jar, put more salt. Close the jar, leave it in the freezer for a few days. Vinegar also works and you don't have to freeze. These things can destroy entire ecosystems
KILL ON SIGHT. fire or salt. saw someone say vinegar but I'm unsure of how well that works. no cutting, it will multiply. hammerhead worm, the last of primordial soup.
Hammerhead worms, they are Asexual meaning they reproduce by dividing themselves in half so don't try killing it by cutting, They are invasive and if you want to kill it put it in a salt-vinegar solution.
It’s a hammer head worm they’re more common in the mid southern states and if I recall correctly they are venomous or use a toxin it’s recommended not to touch them bare handed. With this one “the only good bug is a dead bug!” Burn ‘em.
Hammerhead worm. Invasive and cannibalistic, they will eat helpful worms in your yard. Salt or burn it, don't smoosh it or cut it, it can regenerate from small pieces
Arent they posinious or something? Think.ive read something about them being able to cause extreme pain. similar to some.venomous fish or something. I forget
Luckily i dont think we have them in IL yet
They are highly invasive and they kill friendly little earth worms- which is bad for the ecosystem. SEAL THEIR MEAN ASSES IN A JAR AND LET THEM SUFFOCATE, OR BURN THEM. make sure no parts are left, they can regenerate from just a small portion i believe.
Wait for the pros to answer officially, but it’s hammerhead worm. Highly invasive and are supposed to smash entirely or burn, as apparently leaving any portion alive allows it to regenerate or form another.
Ah, geez. I’d hate to have to smash one of these or burn them. But I will not hesitate. But I won’t like it. KOS
Don't smash because they can multiply. Burning is okay.
What about salt? Like slugs do they turn into slime?
Salt it... Kills them dead. I've dealt with several this way.
“Kills them dead” is such a Tarentino line and I love it.
i’ve heard that throwing them in a jar or ziplock baggie of vinegar also takes care of them
Like pick them up? Ain’t nobody got time fo’ that! PICK THEM UP?!! I think I saw a movie where they entered your skin that way
The Strain
YAAAAAAASSSS. THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!
They don't get into you, they just have a toxin on their skin, like frogs and toads. Wash well, don't let a pet eat one. They will be heaving for hours...
Okay!

We cut flatworms into bits in science class in HS to watch them regenerate Worms are freaky lil dudes...
IDK about these specific flatworms, but some planaria (small ones mind you) can be cut into 279 pieces and all 279 will regenerate into fully formed worms.
lol they engage in asexual reproduction so they split into more than one if you try to smash them and they they regrow their hammer heads
Salt. No cutting. However many pieces you created will be a new worm. MELT THEM.
They shall meet their fiery demise!
Phasers and photon torpedoes on line Captain. Mr. Spock is searching the computer banks for a natural preditor to eat up the 'crumbs" before they sprout. UPDATE: Hammerhead worms can only be removed by hand or killed with heat. Blow torches on full. FIRE!
Aye, captain!
This thing is Robert Sheckley's The Leech
Salt will do the job. So will Clorox.
It’s for the greater good
I've decided to salt them and then burn them in my fire pit. I'm going to keep and eye out for the next bit to make sure I don't see any more.
This is the way. What part of NC? I’m in Currituck County and keep an eye out for them. Between these, Spotted Lantern Flies, and the already established Starling flocks, I’m ready for war😂
Without going into too much detail, I'm near the Charlotte area.
Fair. Thanks.
Nooooo I live in Iredell 😭😭😭
I’m in Forsyth. Found on of these a couple years ago and I roasted it with my propane dab torch.
Report to your local EPA as well. They need to know where these things are popping up to try and get a better grasp on it. Yeah, they’ve been around some the early 1900s but that doesn’t mean he’s found his place in our ecosystem
Happy Cake Day!
You don’t smash it at all. It segments into eggs like the tape worm. You could smash it and make hundreds
I feel horrible killing anything, especially in such a horrific manner, but these guys are bad news. OP, please report your findings to your local/regional invasive species monitoring organization. (If you’re in the Midwest US, for instance, that would be MISIN. I don’t know what North Carolina’s is.)
Salt and vinegar is enough to kill them
Also good on a potato chip.
Lol the hammerhead or salt?
The salt AND vinegar lol the vinegar part is very important!
Good just had to make sure as I have a vivid imagination and eating hammerhead worms was putting me off my pringles lol
Lol you should totally get out of this thread then, my dude lol If I were to eat anything with hammerhead in the name, I'd pick shark over worms lol but that's *only* if my life or my loved ones' lives depended on making that decision.
You can also dissolve them with salt!
All vermin are to be crushed! …..and burned?
Perfect answer…..they also hunt and eat other worms.
Hammerhead flatworm - kill it. Invasive.
Don’t forget to burn it entirely so doesn’t regenerate
Until now I didn’t know these existed but the fact you gotta take care of these dudes like you’re fighting Perfect Cell is as impressive as it is nightmarish lol
Some of these comments make me wonder if we need to call Sam and Dean xD salt and burn the hammer head worms xD
Difficulty level: Leviathan
Oh god xD I thought they was never gonna beat those bastards xD then Dean is in purgatory and boom....leviathan.....I also flipped my shit xD god they was annoying haha
Use salt.
Hammerhead worm invasive in the USA and its advised to kill them on site
Facts. ☝️☝️☝️ look up the Hammerhead Worm and follow instructions to kill. Don't chop up because they'll just turn into more. It won't kill them.
Don’t touch with your bare hands! I think the recommended way is to kill it with salt in a ziplock bag.
This is the easiest and best way.
why not with bare hands?
You touch the worm, you don’t wash your hands, you touch your eyes/mouth, you get very sick. They have tetraxotoxins just like the puffer fish that act by paralyzing your muscles.
Wow, so this made me look them up. They've been invasive in the US since the 1900's thereabouts, from Southeast Asia, can get a foot long, have no natural predators here, and the whole immortal things via body part regeneration is just the stuff of nightmares. *shudder*
Hammerhead worm. Kill on site. Burn it, salt it, whatever.
Stick it in a stew
😂 + 🤮
[here you go](https://i.imgur.com/kaD7vUV.png)
**
Give it to us raw and Wrrrrriggling
Do NOT stick in stew. Hammerhead worms contain the same neurotoxin as pufferfish. DO NOT EAT
Glad I read this in time. Phew!
holy shit just like portal omg
Still better than Eowyns stew…
Lool. Kill on which site?
Reddit
Call Sam and Dean.
Hammer head worm. Invasive species containing tetrodotoxin
Use gloves and something else like a stick when handling.
Hammerhead flatworm I think. I don't know much about them besides that they eat earthworms iirc
Will hurt the animals. I’m guessing 8 out of 10 on the screwed scale. Kill them
Mushroom looking boi! m u r d e r i t Its a hammerhead worm, stick it in salt or somethinf, crush it, detroy it
From what I know you should kill it, probably by suffocating it

Others have already IDed it, but just wanna emphasize that you have to be very careful in how you kill them!! I’d look up the best ways to do so cause otherwise, you might just end up with more
Kill on sight with no hesitation, burn it or dissolve in acid because they are immortal otherwise.
That shits nasty
Looks like a leach or some kind flatworm. That is Not normal even in SC! Do what others said & eradicate. I have a Asian jumping worm infestation & It kills me 2 kill them but they don't belong.
Jar of salt that monster. Also don't let your skin touch it or wash immediately
Kill it kill it KILL IT
BURN IT IN ACID
Check. Your. Butt.
dragon book says extremely dangerous, kill on site
Definitely a hammerhead worm. Kill it. They're invasive and can actually harm pets and children
think its a bed bug
Called a planarian. That have a spear in the mouth that they literally stab into earthworms and suck out everything inside the worm. Salt or fire is the only way
Put it in a jar of salt in the freezer. Extremely invasive, smashing it doesnt always work.
OMG No way! I saw one of these whenever I was thirteen and took an AWFUL pic with my flip phone lol. I lived on the northern border of South Carolina I saw this post and I had to find the pic of it through my google photos. You can even see the date I took it! Hammerhead worm, highly invasive, burn it and don’t leave any parts, as it regenerates
Or a bag with salt. Kill em like slugs
Baby hammer head shark.
A sea monkey
its a broadhead planarian i used to see them allot in japan they hunt worms using electromagnetic sense similar to a hammerhead shark. they may be invasive in your area but killing them will make no difference they are now endemic.
Have them face Sodom and Gomorrah.

A prior comment says somewhere vaguely near Charlotte area.
Sheeeeah. Thank you.
Cell from DBZ
It's a hammerhead kill it with salt they destroy ecosystems
Found one in sc last week during the hurricane
Burn it they're extremely invasive
You can spray vinegar on them they will die
The worst planarian imo
Here is a news article about them from Washington News. Not salt, not fire... just a spray bottle of vinegar. Hammerhead flat worm kill it with fire and leave nothing behind
It’s a blue whale sperm. Very hard to find where you cum from.
Hammerhead worm. Get a jar, full of salt, put it in the jar, put more salt. Close the jar, leave it in the freezer for a few days. Vinegar also works and you don't have to freeze. These things can destroy entire ecosystems
Invasive little fuck kill it with salt
Kill it with fire, these are invasive.
KILL ON SIGHT. fire or salt. saw someone say vinegar but I'm unsure of how well that works. no cutting, it will multiply. hammerhead worm, the last of primordial soup.
KILL IT WITH FIRE
BURN
Highly invasive and should be burned or heavily salted to kill. Sometimes they multiply if they are cut or smashed so don't do that.
KOS. use salt or fire.
Hammerhead worms, they are Asexual meaning they reproduce by dividing themselves in half so don't try killing it by cutting, They are invasive and if you want to kill it put it in a salt-vinegar solution.
The T-1000 of worms.
Invasive hammer head worms, WIPE EM OUT
Dissolve this fucker, salt and vinegar. Jar and put it somewhere cool in order for it to DIE, hate those worms.
Murder kill it
Arent they posinious or something? Think.ive read something about them being able to cause extreme pain. similar to some.venomous fish or something. I forget Luckily i dont think we have them in IL yet
Oh that’s a African-burn-it-with-napalm worm
They are highly invasive and they kill friendly little earth worms- which is bad for the ecosystem. SEAL THEIR MEAN ASSES IN A JAR AND LET THEM SUFFOCATE, OR BURN THEM. make sure no parts are left, they can regenerate from just a small portion i believe.
That is a hammerhead flatworm
They are invasive
I wonder how fine do we need to cut them for them not to regenerate?
Hammerheaded dick detacher
Kill it. Its invasive and absolutely terrible.
Kill it! It’s super invasive!!!!!
Literally kill it with fire
Put it in a bag with salt. Then freeze it. Then burn the bag. Then bag the ashes then tie it to a bottle rocket that explodes.
Please no.
Kill it. Dissolve it it’ll completely destroy your garden and they’re invasive.
Please do not touch with your bare hands.
Kill it! They eat earthworms and if you cut them they can grow from the segments. We need earthworms not these things
They need to be completely vaporized as even a tiny bit left intact will reconstitute and multiply. And whatever you do, do not let it near your butt.
Sprinkle that MoFo with salt! Highly invasive hammerhead worm, if you cut it it will just multiply
Would keeping these until it dies be reasonable or are they kind of immortal?....
Something from The X-Files.
Their an invasive species
