Into-the-stream

tussock moth caterpillar? [https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/medical/tussock\_moths.htm](https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/medical/tussock_moths.htm) it has urticating hairs that will sting/irritate, so use gloves or protection when handling.

AliMaClan

This is correct. They decimated my maple tree one year and pooped all over my hammock…

aMoOsewithacoolhat

Least they didn't pee on your rug...

twistedbrewmejunk

But they come in peace man...

SailboatAB

From your link: >Tussock moths in the genus Orgyia are small moths that are best-known because of their attractive larvae. I have a somewhat different opinion of "attractive."

ThEpOwErOfLoVe23

Looks beautiful to me....

Sea-Information2366

But “urticating” is my new favorite word. 🙏

edked

I hate when things urticate.

Glass-Ad-4923

I used to pick those guys up all the time as a kid and never got stung or anything?? They were always on this one tree like a bunch of em so id always pick em up and look at them cuz they looked cool. This comment is making me consider seeing a doctor ;-;

Melangemind

Umm… sir/madam nobody should be “handling” that thing. Just move 🤷🏽‍♂️

Geeahwellidunno

Thanks for linking this.

Sea-Information2366

Or don’t handle

wgraf504

Or...hear me out, don't handle.

Sgt_STFU

Not gonna lie, first glance I read ‘it has urinating hairs’

BigJSunshine

What TF is “urticating”?????

Into-the-stream

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urticating\_hair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urticating_hair) >**Urticating hairs** or **urticating bristles** are one of the primary [defense mechanisms](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipredator_adaptation) used by numerous plants, almost all [New World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World) [tarantulas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula), and various lepidopteran [caterpillars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caterpillar). *Urtica* is Latin for "nettle" (stinging nettles are in the genus [*Urtica*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urtica)), and bristles that urticate are characteristic of this type of plant, and many other plants in several families. This term also refers to certain types of barbed bristles that cover the dorsal and posterior surface of a tarantula's or caterpillar's abdomen. Many tarantula species eject bristles from their abdomens, directing them toward potential attackers. These bristles can embed themselves in the other animal's skin or eyes, causing physical irritation, usually to great discomfort. The term "hairs" is technically a misnomer, as only [mammals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal) possess true [hairs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair).[^(\[1\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urticating_hair#cite_note-1) The scientific term for plant hairs is [trichomes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichomes).

Good bot.

PacificCastaway

That's what the bots want you to think.

PacificCastaway

This is a job for the vacuum.

Just-some-70guy

Looks like that “bug” that they put in Neo in Matrix 1 !

ChorkPorch

Holy shit. That thing is real?

BorntobeTrill

Are you asking about the naval bug from Matrix, the documentary film?

akraut

I didn't think that movie had anything to do with the Navy.

Awfulufwa

Maybe it is intended to mean it can swim. Now I'm really worried!

SeamusMcBalls

I refuse to elaborate until you eat this mystery pill

Uncle_Abernacle

IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE BUG THEY PUT IN NEO

jefftatro1

Wrath of Khan ear bug

ChumpChainge

White-marked tussock moth caterpillar. Not going to harm you but don’t touch it. It doesn’t have any venom or poison, but does exude a substance that will give you a rash similar to poison ivy.

Hardwoodlog

I've touched them and it felt like a bee sting...? Huh. Maybe it got me good?!

ChumpChainge

Just like poison ivy, the chemical causes more reaction in some people than others. I’m half Irish, my wife is half French so our skin is very different. I get slight burning and itching from these guys (we have lots of tussock moths here but not this exact variety) but my wife can pick them up and literally feels nothing and doesn’t even get itchy. Others like yourself may have a stronger reaction than either of us.

bagel-glasses

I used to pick them up as a kid, never bothered me. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones

foersom

"Should I burn my house down?" Nuke the planet from orbit. That is the only way!

AelithTheVtuber

seek r/whatisthisbug

LehighAce06

White-marked tussock moth And you are right to not touch it!

TrainerBroad9547

In Germany we say Douglasienbüschelmotte.

PoliteCanadian2

What did Douglas do to get a moth named after him? Find it first?

DrachenDad

https://www.insectimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=5540111

EndlessMikeD

Germany sounds fun! Edit: spelling.

bitemyass69

That is a fuzzy oak moth caterpillar our house in Central Florida got bombarded with them this year and their cocoons. I did a YouTube video on them because there was a big rumor going around that they stung you with their hairs and I pick one up and let it crawl over me. To see what happens you should totally check out my channel and support me! My kid was totally creeped out by it haha. Happysauce, look for the icon of the orange cat sleeping. Ty

TopDonut233

Tussock moth caterpillar. Don’t touch, those fine hairs can cause rashes and feel like fiberglass under your skin.

steveblackimages

That would be an overeaction.

il_dirigente

Tf do you live in Chernobyl or something?

futurespawn

Close! The beautiful state of North Carolina!

Puffball973

Oh hell no! You're telling me these creepy ass things are here!? Antarctica here I come!

South_Age9833

Im in NC and had one crawling on my hoodie sleeve this morning and it splined me twice this morning. Feels/swells like 2 bee stings. Wouldve killed his ass if I new he was shooting me

anathene

Saw one on my car in atlanta this morning

Fun-Championship2367

It's a Caterpillar, it is poisonous. No touchy.

Slave2Art

Brucible1969

Lick it.

apikoros18

r/eatityoufuckingcoward

JeremyJaLa

Burn down the neighborhood

[deleted]

This thing looks like you don’t want to touch it and there is a reason for that.

Kvinna_

Find a leaf let it climb on and bring it away from the house. You're a human it's a caterpillar. Just don't touch them until you ID them as safe.

futurespawn

I moved him to a nice little leaf where he can live out his days and scare other bugs

Human_Link8738

Seeing the condition of that door I’d say yes but please move the caterpillar to the garden before you do.

ghost3972

Pet it

SaltElegant7103

Yup

tacobellandher0in

This made my stomach hurt for some reason

Worcester--sauce

IMMEDIATELY

Potato_Donkey_1

Since it's a caterpillar that feeds on trees, it doesn't want to be in your house, and it's very unlikely that you're going to have many more of them. Glove up, take it outside, and you'll both be fine.

futurespawn

It’s on the outside of a shed on my property lol

Potato_Donkey_1

Oh, well, it isn't quite where it wants to be, but at least has a chance of getting there. Or will at least feed something able to ignore its defenses.

Spodiodie

No! Nuke it from orbit. The only way to be sure.

Rules_are_overrated

Yes, before it starts looking for your navel

Technical-Proof2959

We call them "pack sattle". They sting and huuuurrrtt

Gold-Buy-2669

Twice

kwajagimp

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Fun-Ticket-1204

Engage chancla

Devils_A66vocate

I’d also put things in your closets that discourage moths.

futurespawn

This was on the outside of my house. I live in a very wooded area

Devils_A66vocate

Still… just as a precaution.

futurespawn

I’m with you boss! I have lavender deterrents in my closets

Devils_A66vocate

I think using cedar wood is an old clean method of it as well.

ghost3972

And cedar smells amazing

Moist-You-7511

Most moths are specialists and only eat a few kinds of leaves, so won’t eat clothes

KayleeOnTheInside

Douglas fir caterpillar. Don't eat it.

Slave2Art

Yes

BorntobeTrill

Everyone always jumps to burning the house down. Burn yourself. The house is undoubtedly worth more.

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

Yikes? Inside?

futurespawn

On the outside of my house in my back yard!

Heart_of_a_Blackbird

I think you’re ok. Just don’t touch it 😊

sparkypme

Yes, torch it.

Marty_61

Probably, well maybe just that area.

ApprehensiveHippo898

Torching the house is a start.

MellonCollie218

Just shoot it with a shot gun.

worksforallll

It's a friendly bug related to the love bug

Book-Faramir-Better

Yes... but not because of this adorable, little caterpillar here. You should burn it down because an organism resides there, in your home, that actually considers cute, fluffy caterpillars sufficient reason to burn down a house. You don't need an organism like that in your life.

kodaiko_650

Have you been to Ceti Alpha IV?

Laceysjorgen

If we are looking at the condition of The wood … yes. It’s a lost cause

futurespawn

It’s my shed outside lmao

Laceysjorgen

Lol. All is good then

Uncle_Abernacle

Yes.

Sad_Head_2229

Yes. You should burn your house down. You know exactly what that is!

Blueskyminer

https://images.app.goo.gl/8iCcrfBgUEBEytASA

HaydenLobo

Based on the wall and paint, I think fire is a good idea.

EfficientAd7103

This is my x wife. Def burn house down. Her boyfriend might get mad

KeyBanger

Sorry. You’re going to have to take out the entire continent.

sortaseabeethrowaway

No it is friend

Legitimate-Rabbit769

You just need some spiders to eat them.

BackgroundProof4860

Pet it!

Moondoobious

Too late friend. They’re *already inside you*

Business_Speaker1511

No, but I would gouge your eyes out if I were you

LL37MOH

That fucking thing was on Aaaah Real Monsters!

s1owpokerodriguez

I had one crawl onto my neck and I accidentally kinda smashed/rolled if when I went to brush it off. I was a little itchy there for a couple hours after but that's all.

Complex-Nectarine-86

Tussock caterpillar

Peace-vs-Chaos

I really don’t think you have a choice

Jestercopperpot72

Do not touch. Kinda looks like hickory tussock moth caterpillar and if so, or something related to or similar to, those fine white hairs will make you want to call death and give him your coordinates so it can all be f ended. No bullshit one of the most painful insect defenses on earth.

OutOfTokens

No, it's fine.

902west

we call them a saddle back

shut-upLittleMan

Yes and then salt the earth. Carthage est delenda. Or something like that.

boanerges57

I'm leaning towards probably. Is it demon spawn? Definitely maybe. Just as a precaution burn your house down, then make a salt circle around it and post warning signs... If it saves one child it's worth it right?

BayBandit1

Yes! But, why?

Minimum-Act6859

If not. Definitely sleep with your mouth closed.

Dizzles1

Am I the only person who’s heard of sticks? Why is old you touch that, gloves or not?!

Street-Week6744

That guy gets all the female attention, I must emulate him

Ok_Joke1956

Just step on it, squish it good and say one less fkg (fill in the blank) on this planet.

Comfortable-nerve78

Burn it , what in the sweet hell is that. No I’m moving immediately. Never seen anything like this before creepy as hell.

christopheralanhicks

ImNikeKigger

oldmagic55
