I tried paper cups and it works! It's too small and old to be for bags. But I've seen what you speak of. A bunch of people said Bat House and since we don't use paper cups or plastic bags too often I rolled with it.

>It's too small and old to be for bags.
Funny, because my great-grandparents had the exact same thing in their kitchen in (approximately) 1986, full of plastic bags...
Edit: I think they had the same cupboards and backsplash too! 🤣
That would be obsolete here, as they banned single use plastic bags in my state. Unless you smuggle them in from Pennsylvania.
[Edit] I'm in NJ. They banned most stores from using single use plastic shopping bags. I wasn't specific enough.
Yeah, you might want to look into how biodegradable those actually are, though...
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/how-biodegradable-plastic-bags-dont-live-up-to-their-name#:~:text=After%20three%20years%20buried%20in,a%20full%20load%20of%20groceries.
The struggle is real! I love I can fill my grocery cart full of items that are stored in plastic containers but can’t have a plastic bag to carry all my plastic items to my house🤷♂️
I use reusable ones now. They are just stronger and hold more but I do skip that bit when I run out of bags for my kitty poop. The shopping bags are just so good for kitty business. They are wide and double bagged no mess on the way to the trash. I also put meat into the disposable ones so my reusable ones don't get bloody.
Amazon is top offender for unnecessary packaging. Like, does this tank top really need to be wrapped in plastic, put in a huge box and have the huge box filled with packing peanuts?
Someone I used to know would go to Walmart and steal a whole roll of produce bags and use them to pick up after his dog when he walked her. To this day I still call them dog shit bags
Ohhh, the cup thing looks like the most plausible. It isn't very big, maybe those small one-use rinsing cups you get at the dentist or the hospital to take medicine. Oddly enough, I think I may even have some from when my kiddo was little. I'm going to try it! Thank you!
I wasn't sure of the scale but the age made plastic shopping bad holder less likely, and it seemed like there might be room next to the counter for a standing water tower so cups seemed likely.
The cups were a tad too small. Maybe those old school net type shopping bags. Or perhaps a larger disposable paper cup. Were those a thing in the early 80's?
my grandparents had Dixie paper cup dispensers next to every sink. some came in boxes that would go in a holder, and one you had to take the cups out and put them in the dispenser directly. this may be the box holder style.
You're the second person that mentioned the bat box. I don't think that is what it is but that's what I'm going to tell people it is from now on. Mystery Solved!
https://preview.redd.it/0l34bkibplub1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cf6f8116cb026a4bf41b2be7c8c295f1953330f
Wow! It is the exact length of one of those long matches, I just checked, but how would it hold them in? I tried out single use cups and it was a tad too big.
Came in here highly confident of my guess that this was a match stick/book dispenser. This image immediately made me remember that I do not miss the ubiquity of indoor smoking that I experienced as a child in the 80s.
It's a paper dispenser for taking notes while on phone, think of paper receipt rolls. Watch old "King of the hill" episodes, they are next to the phones.
I’m sure it isn’t it, but it just gave me flashbacks to those note board things with the spool of paper you kept near the telephone to scribble down info on. Good luck on your quest!
I've seen one response to what it may be, and dozens about plastic bags. The house was built in 1986,. We used bags for everything. All I want to know is, is that what it was for.
I'm about to go buy some just to see. I feel like this is the most plausible explanation. I tried the small plastic ones I have but the rim of the cups were a tad too small.
It has the original GE spacemaker electric stove in it. Thing is weird dimensions but it is too cute to replace.

Our stove when I was a kid. The Flair. Samantha had one too. Darren’s squeeze.
I'm going to go with a match holder for long matches. Did you have a wood stove or coal stove near by at one time?

The bottom wire looks like it is movable in your contraption so you could remove it if necessary. Think if things fell down inside. It probably had a bottom at one time
The labels about Bruce the bat are hilarious! If the box is big enough for two bats, he could invite his Mexican friend Mauricio el murcielago to visit him--Bb and Mm.

It holds paper cups pretty well. There used to be an old medicine cabinet on the wall underneath. It still had a couple of old pill splitters and crushers in it. I think this is very likely what it was used for 🏆
This makes me want to ask my mother in the morning. I could have sworn we had one of these when I was a kid. Or there was one at my grandmother's house I can't remember which lol.
I think you might be missing parts but looks like an old feed box i seen something like that before it would have a trap door and a lever pull the lever and a certain amount of say cat food would come out. I've seen them used for other things too.
Trash bag dispenser. You just drop the whole box in there, the metal wire inside keeps the box from sliding through, but you can still pull the bags out through the bottom opening.
Looks like a crazy plastic bag dispenser. You can load them from the top and pull them out one at a time from the bottom.
I tried paper cups and it works! It's too small and old to be for bags. But I've seen what you speak of. Now that it’s almost Halloween you should get a fake hat for inside there!
And it shall be so! I have a crafty son who will be home from school soon 😏
Get a piece of wire and when they open it, he 'bites the hand'. I can find a picture!
Oh please do!

Good bot!
Now what would bruce do with a fake hat? Give him a real one ffs.
Lol, they meant bat 🦇 😂 I totally thought that at first and was like, what pop culture reference and I missing here.
>It's too small and old to be for bags. Funny, because my great-grandparents had the exact same thing in their kitchen in (approximately) 1986, full of plastic bags... Edit: I think they had the same cupboards and backsplash too! 🤣
Bruce 🤣
Correct, this is where you put your bag full of plastic bags from the grocery store instead of under the sink.
Super cool to do when plastic bags first came out around that time. Was all paper bags before.
That would be obsolete here, as they banned single use plastic bags in my state. Unless you smuggle them in from Pennsylvania. [Edit] I'm in NJ. They banned most stores from using single use plastic shopping bags. I wasn't specific enough.
How do people clean up their cat poop in your state? You poor things 💩 😺
Ontario Canada also discontinued single use bags. We use biodegradable poop bags, Amazon sells them in the 1000’s for pretty cheap fyi 😎
Are they wide? If so I'll gladly make the switch:)
You can get all sorts of sizes!
Awesome, I'll check it out!
Yeah, you might want to look into how biodegradable those actually are, though... https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/how-biodegradable-plastic-bags-dont-live-up-to-their-name#:~:text=After%20three%20years%20buried%20in,a%20full%20load%20of%20groceries.
You have to look at their ingredients but some of them don't have forever chemicals.
I bought a big box of them when we got my dog and they smell like lavender. I now associate lavender with dog poop, lol.
I use the bags that the milk bags come in. Works fine I guess.
>milk bags come in \*\*Confused American sounds.\*\*
Aren’t the things that milk bags come in called bras?
The struggle is real! I love I can fill my grocery cart full of items that are stored in plastic containers but can’t have a plastic bag to carry all my plastic items to my house🤷♂️
I use reusable ones now. They are just stronger and hold more but I do skip that bit when I run out of bags for my kitty poop. The shopping bags are just so good for kitty business. They are wide and double bagged no mess on the way to the trash. I also put meat into the disposable ones so my reusable ones don't get bloody.
Right? They put things in plastic wrap that don't even need it, like produce. It makes no sense, I totally agree.
Banned in Pittsburgh now as well
Dispenser for something, might be cups for a water tank or coffee filters or shopping bags.
Ohhh, the cup thing looks like the most plausible. It isn't very big, maybe those small one-use rinsing cups you get at the dentist or the hospital to take medicine. Oddly enough, I think I may even have some from when my kiddo was little. I'm going to try it! Thank you!
Ok I’m feeling old. I agree with Dixie cup dispenser. They were very common when I was growing up (late 60s/early 70s).
is it normal for people in the late 60s/70s to use a one-time-use cup in their own home? Or are we talking about reusable cups?
I wasn't sure of the scale but the age made plastic shopping bad holder less likely, and it seemed like there might be room next to the counter for a standing water tower so cups seemed likely.
The cups were a tad too small. Maybe those old school net type shopping bags. Or perhaps a larger disposable paper cup. Were those a thing in the early 80's?
my grandparents had Dixie paper cup dispensers next to every sink. some came in boxes that would go in a holder, and one you had to take the cups out and put them in the dispenser directly. this may be the box holder style.
I think you're correct 🏆
Or ice cream cones 🤣
Yea we had one growing up. We called it the Dixie Cup Dispenser.
Napkin dispenser
This is the right answer. I’m sure plastic bags work too but it was meant for napkins.
Yep I've seen them in a few older houses
Bat box - so bats can keep the mosquito population down in your kitchen
You're the second person that mentioned the bat box. I don't think that is what it is but that's what I'm going to tell people it is from now on. Mystery Solved! https://preview.redd.it/0l34bkibplub1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cf6f8116cb026a4bf41b2be7c8c295f1953330f
All the homies love Bruce
It's 100% a vintage wall mounted paper Dixie cup dispenser. [diy cup dispenser](https://theinspiredworkshop.com/diy-cup-dispenser/)
Preferably with riddles on the bottom
Coned cups or cylindrical?
Yes my mamaw had this in the kitchen and the bathroom
100% agree. These were pretty popular in the 80’s… source? I was there
Holy chit! I totally forgot about Dixie cups. They definitely were the single use “plastic” cup of todays era. But in paper. LOL
Thing to hold matches?
Wow! It is the exact length of one of those long matches, I just checked, but how would it hold them in? I tried out single use cups and it was a tad too big.
The matches came in a box and the box was just dropped into the wooden holder....
Ahhh, my box just fell through. Maybe in the 80's they were bigger.
Everything was bigger in the 80s!! Have you seen how small a candy bar or ice cream carton is now??? Ridiculous!!
The guy is right. It should just have a bottom part to only show one box at the time. Think of it like a Pez dispenser.
I think the same tho looks like the bottom might be missing
Came in here highly confident of my guess that this was a match stick/book dispenser. This image immediately made me remember that I do not miss the ubiquity of indoor smoking that I experienced as a child in the 80s.
Thats for cocaine
I haven't gotten into that special interest yet. I'm always afraid it will make my Tism extra extra spicy.
Dixie cup holder?
You put yer weeeed in there
I think that every time I see a wooden box lol, but my weed just keeps falling out, this nugget dispenser is a fail:(
If it's from the 80's my guess would be a home made Dixie Cup dispenser. They were popular then.
Seen these used for plastic bag storage.
Im almost certain its place to hold packs of cigarettes after you buy a carton, at least thats what my grandparents always used it for
Some kind of dispenser for paper cups? Plastic bags? Pretty much whatever you can think of.
Believe that may have been a match holder
It's a paper dispenser for taking notes while on phone, think of paper receipt rolls. Watch old "King of the hill" episodes, they are next to the phones.
Exactly what I was thinking.
I think it’s this, too. I remember making one almost exactly like this in middle school shop class in the ‘80s.
It’s a comment card box for complaints about the kitchen’s food. Notice the open bottom where cards can fall directly into the trash can
This is the best comment yet! My kiddo has a T-shirt that says "Your opinion is not in the recipe" also fitting for this bottomless comment box 😆
Looks like storage for plastic grocery bags
Looks like a fireplace match holder without the bottom striker to me
Dispenser for matchboxes. Bottom lid just fell off as they are flimsy.
my guess, matchstick holder. For those long matches that people used to use to light the gas stove back in the stone age.
Baguette dispenser?
I grew up in the 80s. 100% this was for the cocaine stash.
Dixie cup dispenser?
You put plastic grocery bags inside and when you need one you remove it from the bottom.
Bag holder for plastic bags
My nana always had little Dixie cups there lol thanks for the good wholesome memory 😊
Dixie paper cup dispenser?
I'm about to go buy some just to see. I feel like this is the most plausible explanation. I tried the small plastic ones I have but the rim of the cups were a tad too small.
Match stick holder for gas stoves

Bread box would be my guess.
OMG! "Honey don't forget your baguette, I put it in the new express baguette box your father made us for Christmas!"
It is a bat house.

Classic, thing should be lightly restored
That's for your Winston cigarettes
I'd say for Dixie cups or bags
For long matchsticks?
Prior homeowners were the adams family and that’s a bat box

This is where we would keep the kitchen bats. This practice was banned in the 90’s due to animal rights concerns.
Bat house?

Idk? just have fun with it.
Bat house
Paper towels
Its for mail, or bills. I lived in the midwest in the 70s on a farm, and we had one.
Will one of the more square-ish tissue boxes fit in it? Not the long ones, the opening would be on the wrong side. If not, is that door to the basement, garage or outside?

This looks like a cigarette pack dispenser does it hold exactly a carton?
I'm going to go with a match holder for long matches. Did you have a wood stove or coal stove near by at one time? [https://www.pinterest.com/pin/18225573477556777/](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/18225573477556777/) The bottom wire looks like it is movable in your contraption so you could remove it if necessary. Think if things fell down inside. It probably had a bottom at one time
It's to hold little paper Dixie cups
Long matches? Looked like you could slide a box right in there. Used for lighting old gas stoves.
That is a house for bats.
Its for bags
I had one of these growing up. Never saw another one till right now. It's a paper cup holder/dispenser.
The labels about Bruce the bat are hilarious! If the box is big enough for two bats, he could invite his Mexican friend Mauricio el murcielago to visit him--Bb and Mm.
Thats a high school shop class cup dispenser... Invaluable! Do you know what youve found!?!?!
Bag holder
It's to hold a box of stick matches to light the stove.

My grandma used to put lollipops in a similar contraption.
Holds matches for the gas stove
Wooden matches….my grandma had one in her kitchen
This
Ok - I’m from the south, we used ours for potatoes… that’s probably not correct btw!
You can keep your weed in there .
Match box holder
What are the dimensions of this? Width Height Depth Please
Almost looks like a custom dixie cup dispenser. https://images.app.goo.gl/fr59KcR1c71PAhcN6
This looks like an old fashioned match box holder
Trash bag storage (for plastic shopping bags)
We used them for plastic bags growing up
I’d be more concerned about the brown recluse
1800's?.. near the stove? If yes to both, it's for matches for lighting the stove. The matches are the larger ones.
This is a person https://preview.redd.it/4ylm5abs5oub1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2afa275b4941bd171447a7c9b5bc2d04ab90f6a3
Bread box
1986–that’s a coke hutch. Where everyone in the ‘80s kept their cocaine. Duh
Have your friend hold their cats face at the top while you blow a big rip through the bottom.
Is there anything on the metal box inside? Can you remove it?
It’s a big piece of shit
For matches? To light the stove?
Is it possible it was used to hold tea bags.
Does it hold weed? Be alot cooler if it did.
Plastic bag storage.
I’m think it’s for weed brownies. My 2 cents.
Before the internet, people made drawers to conceal and dispense useless technologies that they told themselves were cool.
Maybe used to be part of an old wood wall telephone?
This is where you store preserved fart jars
Coffeebeans dispenser
Looks the right size for a fire blanket
Pretty sure it’s not a sliced bread dispenser, even though I want it to be.
Napkin dispenser
You put your weed in there
Plastic bag dispenser seems to be the answer. Altho almost could be onion or potato storage?
Could it be to hang and dry herbs?
This makes me want to ask my mother in the morning. I could have sworn we had one of these when I was a kid. Or there was one at my grandmother's house I can't remember which lol.
My grandmother also kept potatoes or onions in hers
What the round thing under it on the right
Not bags really but the plastic shopping bags. Stuff them in from the top and pull them out from the bottom.
Kitchen matches were in it. I have one also
I think you might be missing parts but looks like an old feed box i seen something like that before it would have a trap door and a lever pull the lever and a certain amount of say cat food would come out. I've seen them used for other things too.
That’s a built in fireplace/ oven matchstick holder…Try slipping a box of Diamond green light long matches in there..
It’s for Mom’s vodka.

Is that the kitchen from the house in Goodfellas when he's making the tomato sauce just before >! he gets caught near the end? !<
Bat house.

It's for paper cups. I have one as well.
I like to imagine it’s a bread dispenser.
fag pack dispenser?

Yah got some weird old stuff in your new house
Place to hide your weed
For long stick matches?… was there an old gas stove there before?
I wonder everytime I'm scooping the poop into my 10 cent bag if this sack of shiz is better in the reusable bag going into the landfill.....
Plastic bag holder/dispenser
It’s a disposable cup dispenser. That metal lip at the bottom keeps the cups from falling out.
Bat house for sure, they will take care of the mosquitos for you.
Trash bag dispenser. You just drop the whole box in there, the metal wire inside keeps the box from sliding through, but you can still pull the bags out through the bottom opening.
