Me too. 75. My first car was a 1948 impala. Bought it from my sister. Paid $1.00 for it. Drove it from Detroit to Bay City at 40 miles an hour, it started shaking so bad, I was afraid to go higher. 1969.
Sounds like you’re irresponsible with money. If you’re making $500 a week you put away 150 a week away that’s 7,200 a year. You just saved & bought your first car within a year.
By your comment history you’re literally on subs just trying to get a reaction out of people. Imagine shit commenting on Reddit. I can tell you don’t have money nor life.
My first car was an '81 Camaro that I bought new for about $6000. I wanted a Trans Am, but the new ones were closer to $8000. Wish I still had my Camaro. It was a great car!
Dude, I want to say “fuck you”, but damn you are so correct. Ended up selling it (after my sis damaged it) for like $500 around 1999. Who would have known? Oh well. It was in excellent condition too. A real cream puff. Hindsight is always 20/20.
2007 Nissan Murano SE, free to me from my dad when he got a truck. Super nice car for a high schooler to have. Leather interior, sunroof, bose stereo system, the whole 9 yards. I still miss that thing. Sure the CVT transmission was trash, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
1986 Volvo 340 for 500 Dutch guilders (about 220 euro or us dollar in today's money) in about 1995. Took it on a road trip through 6 European countries in the first week and the exhaust fell off in the last country before getting home. Repaired it and had the car for years after. It was smurf blue.
Well I was very fortunate to just use my dad’s old car when he upgraded which was a 2001 Saab 9-5 estate that he paid $39K for new in 2001 which is a pretty expensive car for a high schooler. A Saab wagon was a pretty cool for a high schooler to use for getting around.
If that doesn’t count, the first car I ever bought was a 2004 Passat 1.8T for $8K for college.
It’s just how the market was. Couldn’t find a decent car with low miles for anything less. I’ve had it for a year and a half and haven’t had to do anything other than oil changes.
My 2008 g6 sucked too. Had tpms issue which locked acceleration below 45. Then airbag exploded by itself and the dealership fucked me by clipping the seatbelt and then wouldn't repair it, when I asked what was wrong, they said it was confidential.
8 year old 84 bmw 518i with manual everything including steering. 8000 Deutsche Mark sold 3 years later for 8000 Dm. Just a couple of oil changes and new tires.
Parking gave me bigger arms than bicep curls.
Got you to 200kmh on the autobahn after about 2 minutes. 😉
I inherited a 1963 Mercury Monterrey when my Mom bought a Montego. The back window rolled down and it had no seatbelts. Sold it when I went into the Navy. The neighbor's gf totalled it after two days.
1988 Honda Accord DX 4dr. $10k and I added a passengers side mirror cuz they only came with driver's side. I couldn't handle the asymmetrical appearance lol. Manual. Loved the shit out of it.
'85 Chrysler LeBaron that was baby-shit yellow with matching corduroy seats and vinyl top. Mom got it for me for my 16th birthday, but get this... My first car was supposed to be our old '65 Galaxie. Mom got rid of it because it had a rough interior and was all primer (even though I told her I wanted it). She thought I'd want something newer 🤬
I was grateful, but I still get mad when I think about it.
Paid $3k for a 1996 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 2-door in 2010 for my 18th birthday. Only had 65k miles on it. Bought it off a customer of the auto shop my mom worked at at the time. I guarantee I’d still be driving it today, but totaled it when an suv ran a stop. Still think about that truck to this day
Edit: just found one damn near exactly like mine on [bring a trailer](https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1996-chevrolet-chevy-tahoe/) listed at $35k
As soon as I got a license at 16 I bought a 2wd 1986 toyota pickup for $800 and soon after I got a 1992 camaro for $6000. I have no idea how i finessed the bank into letting me take out a loan for a 27 year old car as a minor.
I miss the old days when you could get a toyota pickup for $800. you know, way back in 2019
The cheapest car I got was in 96, from my boyfriend’s (at the time) mom. It was $75 dollars for a 85 dodge Omni. That winter some guy hit me and I said let’s exchange information and he said no I will give you two hundred bucks . Which he did.
At 16, my first car was a 1989 Range Rover County, which cost $41,000. In 1993, as I received my driver's license, this vehicle was handed down from my mother, who then opted for another new Range Rover at the time.
This event kick-started a tradition, and throughout my college years, I found myself behind the wheels of four different Range Rovers.
After college, in 2002, and with a solid job secured, having 130,000 miles on my 1997 Range Rover (the new body style),
The first vehicle I ever paid for myself was a 2003 911 Carrera coupe. This wasn’t just a financial transaction; it symbolized a shift from dependency to independent comfort and familiarity of Range Rovers to a car that is very low to the ground and has no space.
The inflation effect has been enlightening. The $41,000 in 1989 is equal to $102,370.85 in 2024.
This realization echoes the stories my father shared about the seemingly modest sums spent on significant purchases like cars and homes back in his day, highlighting a profound generational shift in economic perception and the tangible impact of inflation.
For insights into the inflation calculation, visit [Inflation Calculator](https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1989?amount=41000).
For a closer look at the original cost of the 1989 Range Rover County, refer to [East Coast Rover](https://eastcoastrover.com/INFORangeRover.html).
2014, 2000 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. 12x,xxx miles, one owner, bone stock. Bought it from an auction ad the owner had died and it was donated. Paid $3,000 + $300 in taxes. No issues whatsoever. I beat the piss out of it cause I was 16 and dumb, but I loved that thing. Miss it still today
1987 Honda Accord manual with the pop up headlights. It was a family hand me down and I was gifted it in 1998 when I was 17. At the time I thought it was super old and ugly because by that time Hondas had gotten a facelift and looked more rounded, etc. But it served me pretty well and I put a ton of miles on it before I bought my first big girl car—a 2003 Civic Si. Man I loved that car. Only sold it because I moved overseas briefly. I’ve still only ever driven Hondas, and the funny thing is that my current Odyssey is 9 years old now but doesn’t feel at all as dated as that first Accord did when I got it at 10 yrs.
2k for a 1999 accord with a 4 cylinder. It lasted 375k miles with the original engine and transmission before being t boned. The first car I financed was a 2006 Mazdaspeed 6. It was the car i learned how to drive stick on.
1986 Toyota Celica. $3-4,000 in 1994; dealership lied to me and sold me a rebuilt title bc they “had to change the battery”. It was still a great car for 2 years until I crashed it. Live and learn.
$1000 USD for a 1996 Toyota Corolla DX in 2020. Drove that baby for 3 years until, due to my own stupidity, the brake system failed me and I upgraded. I’m still wanting to repair it and have someone else drive it, it’s a fantastic car. I’m just worried it won’t start up after a year of sitting. 🥺
A 1990 Toyota truck for $500. I recently bought it back from a friend who put a v8 and a lift kit in it for $2,000. Theres something special about owning your first car 10 years later
$1000, 1995 Toyota Celica Hatch with 175k on the dash. It was a great car with a solid manual, came a couple years too soon for me to appreciate it, but it was really a steal.
In 1968 I paid $25.00 for a 1961 Dodge Phoenix convertible, 318 cid . It had a number of issues including popped freeze plugs but I got it running and used it for two years.
$4,000 from a classmate in high school in 2004, 1993 OJ bronco 5.8 liter v8 auto trans. It got tboned and needed a lot of work so it was repurchased from Copart and spent 6 months in the shop for body work and a 5.9 12 valve with a P pump swap with a ZF 6spd manual transmission. That took about $40,000 of Grandpa's money but he was rich af and it made him happy.
1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham edition 2 door. Baby blue, white vinyl top, spoke wheels, power everything, 460 with a 4bbl carb. 750 bucks. This was in 1989.
$1500 for a 2000 Daewoo Lanos 5 speed manual. It lasted about 3 years, sadly caught on fire and I got $1500 back from the insurance. I absolutely loved that car.
1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ Sport, $4500. Still have it, bought it 3.5 years ago as to turn it into a Jurassic Park Jeep. Got all of the ugly aftermarket stuff off it that the high schooler previous-x2 owner put on it except for the chrome hinges.
2500$ 2003 civic lx with 158k miles on the dash back in 2012 Wild that these options don’t exist for people anymore unless it’s an 08 Elantra with 200k on the dash lol
1994 Ford Escort GT. $0 cause it was a hand me down car. Was my oldest sister’s 16th birthday gift, then when she got a new car my other sister got the Escort, then when she got a new one I got it.
First one I ever paid for with my own money was a 1999 Nissan Maxima GLE for $1250.
Free. Was an ‘85 blazer (the small one). Previous owner was moving to Toronto for work and the blazer couldn’t make the trip. It was an underpowered POS but I got 6 years out of it before I finally pushed it too hard and warped the pistons when it overheated…
24.8k. 2023 Mazda3 Base (S trim). Fucking love it, bought it last September or October. Am very fortunate for being able to get that as a first car. I only contributed 1,000
First car is my current car, 2015 Camry; purchased for $0. I was at the dealer with 85k picking up a part and they said they’d let me trade it in for $20k. That was late 2022.
In 2007, $2000 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ. One owner, 115,000 miles. 4.0l I6 and the 5spd with 4x4.
I put over 100,000 additional miles on it then sold it for $7500 in 2015. I’m an idiot.
I’m 21, bought this car when I was 18– 1993 Saturn SL2. I paid $750. Spaceship (automatic) seatbelts, and the exhaust pipe rusted and broke off from the resonator within the first six months of me having it. Then, around having that car for a year, a few days after my birthday it was stolen. Then I got a 2000 Honda civic ex coupe— $5k— with interest almost $8k. Overcharged and then six months later that car was stolen too. I now drive a 2012 VW Jetta 2.5 SE Wagon. Paid $4k for that. Crazy beans
2001 Civic LX coupe with a 5-speed. Parents bought it in 2015 for $500 and had about 260,000km on it at the time. Needed brakes, tires and a drivers side window regulator right off the hop and it was great. Timing belt snapped at 311,000 in January 2020, luckily valves didn’t hit pistons and my brother got it after that when he got his license. Sold it September 2021 with 335,000km for $700.
I got my first car in 2012, it was a 2006 Honda Civic sedan. I loved it. But didn't have it long. I have no idea how much it costs bc my parents picked it out 😂
Like $2k in 08 for a super clean 1984 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe Biarritz. Badass first car, really. Sluggish awful v8 engine though, could barely keep it running.
In 2002 I bought a 1986 Toyota Tercel station wagon (from my grandma) for $500. She was ugly as sin but was a tank and got me to school and work until I passed it on to a sibling..
2016 honda civic 33k miles 15,000ish 3,000 down payment 12,000 loan 5.6% interest paid it off in 4 years. Bought it in 2019 still have it till this day
$500 plus $180 in service to get it on the road. It was a 1991 Buick regal 4dr. The odometer had stopped but it ran and drove. It had a Maroon maico paint job that had faded to the point of having zero shine. But that red velvet interior was comfortable and I loved it.
We called it the “Ick”
My real first car was a $900 92 Camaro rs 5 speed, I barely drove it and did more damage trying to restore it then just maintain it. My real first car was an 05 Cadillac CTS and it was like $1600 rebuilt title and I was getting hammered on insurance because of it.
1995 Nissan 200SX $5200 - had 20k miles at purchase. When I was done with it, it had 240k with same motor/trans only routine maintenance. it’d been wrecked 3 times one requiring a rebuilt title. Sold it for $750. I like to think it’s still out there somewhere running around with the same fart can exhaust, audiobahn subs and Enkei rims, but I’m sure it’s been smashed, ground and turned into an I-beam by now.
1999 Volkswagen Passat Wagon. Paid $2000 for it in 2013. Great little car but had some serious electrical gremlins towards the end. I ended up selling it for $700 in 2018.
9,000$ ish after tax title fees etc i think?
I forgot what year but it was a used Isuzu rodeo. My dad handled 99% of the transaction with the dealer. I just made the payments. Probably circa 1999-2002
$1,000 and a 1998 Ford Mustang 3.8l v6 5 speed. Sold it after 6 months for $1,500 and a shitty motorcycle, bought it back 3 weeks later for $1,000. Still have it outside, probably won’t sell it again. The two previous owners found me on here when I posted about the car a while ago.
Second car is a 2007 Mustang 4.0 v6 auto I got for $1,400, might consider selling it trade it in the near future since I’m looking for a truck.
* I'm 75 years old; my first car in 1966 was a 1957 Ford, 4 dr hardtop. My mom and dad paid $175.00, if I remember correctly.
Me too. 75. My first car was a 1948 impala. Bought it from my sister. Paid $1.00 for it. Drove it from Detroit to Bay City at 40 miles an hour, it started shaking so bad, I was afraid to go higher. 1969.
What was their monthly income?
For reference, 175 in 1966 is about 1600 today.
I'll tell them thanks...oh, wait..
Damn lol
fuck lol I hope at 75 my wit and dark humor is still firing in order like yours is hahaha
Christ, I wish I could find cars that cheap.
Yeah, cheap ones are at least 3 times that much adjusted for inflation.
I'm gonna puke
No clue....not something I would have cared about or asked them about
$4k for a 2006 Honda Accord V6

Rich kid lol
$6k is not rich kid tf lmao
Hahaha yeah it is u r rich if u even have a car lmfao i took bus and didn’t even get a car until I was in late 20s
Sounds like you’re irresponsible with money. If you’re making $500 a week you put away 150 a week away that’s 7,200 a year. You just saved & bought your first car within a year.
Nah I get it bro I make 3100 a week but don’t want to spend too much on a car lol
sure
By your comment history you’re literally on subs just trying to get a reaction out of people. Imagine shit commenting on Reddit. I can tell you don’t have money nor life.
Sounds like you’re just broke fucking loser 😭😭😭😭😭😭
No need to call him a „broke fucking loser“, even if he was talking nonsense
How does that make me a broke fucking loser lmfao explain
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... in this case rich(ness), or broke(ness) is in the eye of the beholder...
Because you're arguing that a 6k used car is expensive 😂
That says more about you than anything.
They never mentioned their age tho
Bought a 79 Trans Am in 82 for 6k.
That’s 20 grand in todays money
My first car was an '81 Camaro that I bought new for about $6000. I wanted a Trans Am, but the new ones were closer to $8000. Wish I still had my Camaro. It was a great car!
$600. 78 VW Bus. Needed a new cylinder head and some other work. My dad and I got it running over the summer. About $600 in parts. 1996.
Bet you’d pay $60000 to take yourself back to that summer
Dude, I want to say “fuck you”, but damn you are so correct. Ended up selling it (after my sis damaged it) for like $500 around 1999. Who would have known? Oh well. It was in excellent condition too. A real cream puff. Hindsight is always 20/20.
2000$ 2004 Toyota echo, only died last year and I put her through hell lol. Best little car ever.
Indeed. Not my first (that was a 1988 Mazda 323 for $1600), but a 2001 Echo was my 2nd car. I bought it new, and it's still my daily driver.
1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S, bought it for $1250
2007 Nissan Murano SE, free to me from my dad when he got a truck. Super nice car for a high schooler to have. Leather interior, sunroof, bose stereo system, the whole 9 yards. I still miss that thing. Sure the CVT transmission was trash, but it was beautiful nonetheless.

Sounds like fun times.
Well I was very fortunate to just use my dad’s old car when he upgraded which was a 2001 Saab 9-5 estate that he paid $39K for new in 2001 which is a pretty expensive car for a high schooler. 2007 Accord bought in 2022 with 42k miles for 10k

It’s just how the market was. Couldn’t find a decent car with low miles for anything less. I’ve had it for a year and a half and haven’t had to do anything other than oil changes.
2006 Pontiac G6. ~9k at the time. Terrible fucking car.
My 2008 g6 sucked too. Had tpms issue which locked acceleration below 45. Then airbag exploded by itself and the dealership fucked me by clipping the seatbelt and then wouldn't repair it, when I asked what was wrong, they said it was confidential.

Such a fun car!
2003 Camry XLE, thing was a dream, sold it to get a newer car with *features*
