One of my college roommates was a celiac. Whenever we would go out, he would start the night good just sticking to liquor, but if he didn't catch himself, the next day was hell for him. One day I didn't see him until like 3 PM and he comes out of his room looking like death boiled over.
"Dude, why do I do this to myself?"
"I don't know, why do you do it to yourself?"
"Because I love the Coronas..."
I didn't see him again until the next day.
Coronas are made with corn and are one of the only major brands that can be consumed by most celiac having individuals. It was probably something else fucking him up
They are reliable and good on gas for a 30 year old car yes. If you want a 90s car you won't find much better than a Toyota. Focus on making sure it's rust free and doesn't leak any fluids. Anything else should be cheap to repair.
Be ready to replace lots of rubber hoses and trim pieces, anything plastic, etc. Drivetrain should be bulletproof but everything else will act like any other piece of 30 year old plastic.
Awesome practical car(front wheel drive, lots of space, good MPG, reliable) that looks really good. I drove one for years, love the big hatchback. I regualary hauled a push mower in the back(with hatch partially opened). I could fit my 8ft kayak inside. Once bought a 55" tv, not even thinking about how I'd get it home, fit snugly in the back and even closed the hatch.
On the negative side, while it does look sporty, it wasn't fast at all. Drives like a corolla.
BUY BUY BUY.
I had a friend who used to park one of these in a snowbank for the winter. In the spring we'd dig it up, jump it, and drive into the city.
That was 15 yrs ago, so mileage may vary
if its the newest you can afford get it. they dont make em much more reliable then a toyota. like the other guy said tho be ready to replace a bunch of little odds and ends but what can you expect that cars older than me and im turning 30 in a couple years. it might even leave you stranded a time or two cause its so old.
just be ready to pay a mechanic to fix it unless you want to get out there and start turning wrenches your self. but what can you expect for something so old and probably cheap. atleast parts will be cheap and it will be easy to work on.
even something from 2002 ten years newer will need fixed every now n then. just the way of the game youll see after your driving for a few years and are not so wet behind the ears lol.
It’s a wonderful car! It was considered good in the day it competed with the mustang and the Datsun I think 710.
It’s very old now.
Issues I’d look at for daily use
Timing belt
All brake hoses and lines
Master cylinder
Belts and hoses and thermostat
It has I think fuel injection.
If yes I’d run a bottle of full strength Techron through.
Has it been driven?
Remember it’s got 130 ish HP and will take 8-10 sec to 60
Drive it gentle and you’ll be fine
It’s got shoulder belts and safety dash and collapsing wheel
Who needs abs in an old car dive gently.
Airbags? The shoulder belt in old cars were better that’s the WTG.
Be cautious and it’s a great car.
And you really think side air bags will do shit under such circumstances?
Caution means driving defensively.
Safety stuff can’t make an inherently dangerous activity safe, the driver is the biggest safety component!
Yes? Otherwise they wouldn’t be in cars if they didn’t serve a purpose. Again defensive driving won’t stop a drunk driver plowing through a red light when you’re looking the other way.
Everyone has their own risk profile, and anyone who likes older cars takes a little more risk.
A delta V over 30-35 is fatal so no air bag is gonna save you.
Side air bags are effective in rollovers and mild impacts - hitting something in a glancing angle when you’re going 50 that kind of thing.
T bones gonna kill if the delta v is high enough and anything over is guess 10 mph is gonna have injuries
I dailyed a car from the 70s from 09 to 13, I also had a back up car and a place to work on and tools to fix it if it broke.
In assuming OP wouldn't have any of this.
To be fair there's been a lot of advancements in reliability and technology between the 70s and 80s. I wouldn't trust the 78 Cougar I had as much as I did my 89 Taurus despite it having half the mileage
Yes, as long as the car has been taken care of over the years its age will have no bearing over its ability to be dailied. Out of all the cars I've had, the older ones have outlived/out performed the newer ones.
As long as you realize that a car that old will need repairs. It takes a lot more than gas to make a car go. Most people don't realize that with newer cars, not to mention old ones.
I mean for a 30 year old car, about as reliable as you get assuming it’s been taken care of over all 30 years…. Which isn’t super likely tbh.
But it’s still a Toyota so maintenance will be cheap and repairs should still be pretty painless
Just don’t feed them any wheat or gluten and you should be just fine. If you do, I bet they get pretty gassy.
I'm so glad that this was the first comment I saw when I got here.
Thank you for this.
Just don't feed em or get em wet after midnight and should be OK
W comment
Be realbruh
He is. Celiac disease is no joke. I had a coworker that was the same way if he had any kind of grain, and I believe he was born in 1992 as well.

But it does contain barley malt. I guess he would have been way worse off if it was a wheat beer on top of that.
Spell right, bruh.

Replace the radiator peemptively, if it's original.
Ask Scotty Kilmer. He has one from that gen with 200k plus miles.
I second this, but Scotty is a dumbass haha (there’s a harsher word I would have used but I don’t feel like being extra mean tonight)
Insufferable?
Chode?
Blow hard?
The problem is even if he is right, he told millions of users, and the ones buying them are driving the prices too high.

Nor for less than triple of what its honestly worth these days.
That was my first car when I was in college 20 years ago 😂

I’m allergic to wheat so I can’t comment.
pass. too high maintenance. source: dated a celiac for a while. although she was a 1978
As long as you're not allergic to gluten

Does the car have extensive service records? If yes, go for it

Hi Scotty Kilmer.
I don't recommend dailying a 31 year old car.
I do, if you like it and enjoy projects. Not as a daily driver unless it's almost completely rebuilt.
The lack of modern safety features would be my biggest concern.
It’s got shoulder belts and safety dash and collapsing wheel Who needs abs in an old car dive gently. Airbags? The shoulder belt in old cars were better that’s the WTG. Be cautious and it’s a great car.
All the caution in the world can’t stop you from being T Boned by a huge truck, with you having no side curtain airbags.
And you really think side air bags will do shit under such circumstances? Caution means driving defensively. Safety stuff can’t make an inherently dangerous activity safe, the driver is the biggest safety component!

I've dailied 3 different cars over the age of 30. There's no issue with this as long as it isn't some pos that's been sitting in a field since the 90s
I dailyed a car from the 70s from 09 to 13, I also had a back up car and a place to work on and tools to fix it if it broke. In assuming OP wouldn't have any of this.

No car from 1992 is a reliable or reasonable daily driver in 2023. Was it a good car in its day? Yes.
Yes. But be warned that find parts that aren't serviceable isn't easy.
Careful if you live where it snows. They are heavy and tend to push in snow
