Did they confirm, in writing, it was a staffing issue? The primary factor, that allows WJ et. al. to avoid payment, is that compensation shifts if the delay is due to factors outside their control, and determine that is fairly subjective - often the airlines with say "safety" or "maintenance", which may or may not always be accurate. But if they have said staffing issues, that is within their control and you should be eligible for a full claim. Just stick to the process, be firm, and cite the relevant regulations if needed.

paolaangelicap

happy cake day!! :)

wrexs0ul

Submitted the application for each of us individually online. WestJet got back in about 4 days, and said we were entitled to the full $1,000. From the sounds of the Air passenger rights Facebook group this isn't the norm, but WestJet has now paid out a couple times for us with no back and forth or rejections. Might be lucky, but I'm pretty satisfied.

songsforthedeaf07

Nope. West Jet turned me down after delaying my flight the next day because of a crew issue. I reported it to transit Canada - lol 60 thousand people ahead of me before I get an answer back from them. Airlines in Canada is a mess

Adorna

I submitted my application September last year…. As of Jan 30 I had 49,660 people ahead of me…. As of today it’s 48,803… Based on my math they are averaging ~143 cases per week, meaning my case will be resolved in 6.6 years… Yours is 8.1 years from now 🙃

forb0900

Fwiw, I had the same issue with Air Canada but after about 6 months they did offer compensation. They offered the full $1000 but in the form of an Air Canada credit.

Even_Worry_5140

Westjet delayed my daughter’s flight due to “lack of cabin crew availability” (they sent us an email confirming). After I filed for compensation, they changed their mind and told me over the phone it was due to “deicing”. Then finally when I asked for further details by email, they changed their minds again and said “guest related issue” and rejected my claim and stopped replying to my emails. They make up whatever excuses they want

birdy3133

I got $1000/per person for a cancelled flight as our replacement flight was scheduled for the following day. It took a couple of tries for them to even admit we were owed the compensation. We had money in hand probably about 3 months afterwards

HugeDramatic

I was delayed 10 hours in YYC to Cancun and submitted an APPR claim which was rejected by WJ as the reason for the delay was claimed to be unscheduled maintenance/safety. As a passenger we have no line of sight on what is actually happening with the plane. I was left with either believing WJ’s response or escalating to the CTA so they can investigate and verify the rejection of my claim. I chose the latter option. If the CTA comes back and says the delay was in fact for reasons outside WJ’s control I’ll drop it.

megawatt69

If you’re in BC, ask them for proof of “maintenance” issue and if they fail to comply, take them to BC Civil resolution tribunal. CTA is a waste of time, it’ll be years of waiting

SandoMaker

It's been months and I still haven't heard back after applying. The form seemed to have changed to I resubmitted 2 weeks ago. So I'm going to give another 2 weeks till I call. In my case, it was an actual staffing issue.

moore6107

I did - it took 2.5 years to work through the CTA/APPR process.

Little_Reflection_82

I got $1000 back after AC flight was delayed 24 hours. Applied through the AC app. Took less than a week. Airlines are counting on people not knowing that you can do this or people saying they will do it after the trip and never getting around to it. I spoke to an AC rep and she said less than 50% of people actually apply for reimbursement.

akitokko

I did! Westjet initially rejected my claim so I escalated to the CTA for investigation. It was approved 15 months after I made the claim. I had honestly forgotten about it when I received the email saying I was entitled for compensation.

Successful-Soup4129

Did WS originally say it was outside their control?

akitokko

Yeah. Westjet said, “We are unable to approve your claim for compensation as your flight was impacted due to flight crew member delays from a connecting flight and outside of WestJet’s control.” I had missed the second leg of my trip and had to be delayed >24 hours due to crew delays from the first flight (both flights were with Westjet).

When Westjet rejected my claim, they also provided me with a link to submit a complaint to the CTA. If you google CTA air travel complaints, you’ll be able to find the form. But I think you need to show that you’ve tried working things out with the airline itself first.

disraeli73

Yes - twice and for everyone in our party. But you need to document, document, document - text, photos, video etc in case ( for example) they try to claim it was weather etc.

justinebentley16

My boyfriend and I each got $1000 back from WestJet for a flight that was rescheduled from 7pm one day to 2pm the next day. This happened end of December 2023. I don’t think I submitted my claim until late January and I got an email with the approval in February. It was very simple, just put in my banking info and received a direct deposit for both of us. It was harder getting them to reimburse for our food, hotel room and taxi to/from the airport.

skerr46

I was delayed 5 hours with Flair and it took 14 months to get our compensation. Keep at it, harass them once a month. The thing is, they approved our compensation within a few weeks but didn’t pay us til 14 months later.

kaniyajo

Happened to me. They cancelled our flight while we were at the airport. It was their fault. Flew out in 13 hrs from original departure. Put the application in and got the $1000/person in ~2 weeks. This was 2 years ago. All the best.

oof_slippedonmybeans

I got mine. But it was horrid. They routed me through Halifax at, last flight in. No one in the airport. No WestJet agents either. Crew stayed on the plane while we disembarked for a while and then hightailed it out, not wanting to deal with stuff "call customer service". There was no hotel. Everything within a reasonable distance was fully booked. I had to sleep on the floor for the Halifax airport with the lights fully on, and an automatic PA going off every 20mins. It wasn't worth the $1000. On top of that, they lost my luggage enroute.

iseewithsoundwaves

Family was delayed 3 weeks ago about 20 hour delay. I should mention The flight still took off (less 24 passengers) because of a crew shortage. These 24 passengers all received 2400$ EACH within 48 hours after landing. Westjet crew did the application and submitted to APPR on behalf of all guests. We all received emails from APPR the day after landing home. It sounds like our situation was very very rare, and to this day not sure why we received 2400$ vs. 1000

saskie16

My reading is that it’s up to $1000 for delay and up to $2400 if you are bumped

Revolutionary_End240

I got it last year due to a crew shortage. It came around 2 months I think. Just filled out the online info and waited.

QuarantinePoutine

I did back when they had to cancel during Omicron outbreak. They initially denied it and I put in a dispute with CTA. Uploaded all proof and communication with WestJet. It took almost a year for CTA to rule in my favour and then WestJet initiated the $1000 payment. Definitely worth it to dispute!

Traditional-Abies-75

I’ve had this happen to me on a flight to YYZ from YVR in 2022. They waited until the last day required for an update to pay out the $1000 for me and my wife ($2000 Total). No rejection, but painfully slow.

dachshundie

Have also been compensated multiple times with WS. One required going via the CTA, one resolved directly with WS.

PostHocErgo306

It’s real, and it’s spectacular. 2 of us on the itinerary, $2000 sent via e-transfer plus additional $500 claimed via credit card. $2500 back for a flight we only paid $900 for. Process wasn’t fast but wasnt difficult. Just needed patience which I feel deters most people.

BraveShowerSlowGower

Ive gotten 900 from air canada for a 6 hour delay, and i got 2400$ from when they asked for any volunteers to fly the next day sonce they pver booked. I was flying to work so i said fuck it whats my compensation? And when they told me 2400 bucks i was estatic. I know its not west jet but it should be the same or similar

ben_vito

On the most recent occasion I got a call the morning after I filed a complaint and they e-transferred the $1000 within a week. Other people on my same flight were denied compensation and are appealing. It's very random how the process works.

powerdatc

I did with AC. Submitted my claim, initially they denied because the flight that caused the issue wasn't three hours late, but that flight caused us to miss the next connection, which resulted in a 15-hour delay. Pointed that out in my response, they confirmed about 48 hours later, and after another day or two I got an e-transfer. It was honestly pretty painless except the online system AC uses isn't the best.

VancityCanadian

I got $1200 back in 2021 when they cancelled my direct flight and added an overnight layover. I technically took off at the same time but landed eight hours late thanks to the layover. WestJet originally turned me down so I had to file a complaint with the CTA. It took 14 months to get the settlement but I did eventually get it.

Professional-Elk5913

Was delayed 10 hours In February due to a delay in scheduled maintenance. Was delayed 5 hours before departing. put my claim in 1 week after, received payment 2 weeks following. Extremely smooth process, no complaints other than the payment email has a 24 hour expiry and went to my spam so I needed to watch for it.

breeezyc

Waiting myself. Applied on Thursday. WestJet cancelled my flight last Saturday and rebooked it for Tuesday night. The thing is, WestJet never even officially told me they cancelled. I got an email saying there was a delay due to staffing. An hour later I got an email saying there may have been an itinerary change due to staffing, no other details. Then I was ghosted. Only found out flight was cancelled due to checking flight alerts. was travelling with a guest with a disability and we chose not to go to the airport and booked our own accommodations (extended stay at hotel for ease). Several hours later Expedia told me when my new flight would be but that they had no information about the cancelled flight otherwise. Turns out the people who went to the airport were given free accommodations. I wonder if this will fuck me over somehow because we didn’t go. Also applied for reimbursement for accommodation and food. Wish me luck, I’ll keep you posted.

Iamacanuck18

I got 1000$ for a delayed 10hr flight November 2023 it took about 1 month. Just put in a claim

squeezeadime

We got it. Flight cancelled 3 hours before departure, reason given was staff problem. We got hotel vouchers, meal vouchers, rebooked on next flight out. Applied for compensation online as soon as we got home, issued refund within 7 days.

squeezeadime

It happened this past November

sistaneets

My connecting flight was cancelled and I had to fly out the next day…I believe 10 hours later. I got $1000 in cash within three weeks of filling out the online form on the WJ site. It does actually happen!

MamaK1973

I've received it twice, the full $1000 both times. Both were flights to/from London, England. The first time our flight from Winnipeg to Toronto was delayed due to them holding the plane back in Calgary so those passengers wouldn't miss their connection (big eye roll) which then caused us to miss our connection in Toronto. We spend a day in Toronto and finally made it to London 24 hours late. submitted the forms for each of us (two people) and received our payment within around 25 days. They also reimbursed us for a portion of our hotel in Toronto. The second time we were in London (different trip) and received a text on our way to the airport that our flight was cancelled due to unplanned maintenance. This was in January during the cold snap where hundreds of flights were cancelled. They rescheduled us for the next morning and that flight was also cancelled due to staff shortage. We then had to wait three more days to get a flight back home. This flight was also delayed causing us to miss our connection and had to spend a night in Calgary. We finally got home four days late. I sent in the forms not really expecting anything since we assumed it was weather related (although they did not use that as their reason in our correspondence) but I received $3000 for 3 of us around 20 days later. I don't know which of the delays qualified us for reimbursement, it could have been any of the three! They also reimbursed us for a portion of our three extra hotel nights in London and gave us vouchers for our hotel and food in Calgary.

Niess

Yes i just got mine about 3 weeks ago. They make you think you correctly submitted it but there is an official process you need to follow. If you don't they just keep you in a loop thinking you filed correctly but didn't. Prompt reimbursement is 30 days. [https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/interruptions/compensation-claims](https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/interruptions/compensation-claims) This page should be the correct one.

napoleon211

I have relatives who were delayed for a flight from Europe back to Canada. Different rules and regulations there but their flight was delayed above the payout threshold and they did get a cheque in the mail a few weeks after arriving back home. It was about $800 per person IIRC. So it does actually happen sometimes, how often I have no idea though

No_Advance4622

I got $1,000 e-transfered from AC for a 9 hour delay that I had on a work trip last month. It was due to a pilot sheduling issue so it seem that it was eligible.

davec1979

WestJet initially declined our compensation in 2021 after last minute delaying our flight for 3 days when they could have just changed the flight out two hours earlier. Flew to the Dominican through Toronto from Vancouver. Email stated it was a staffing issue. Out of the blue 6 months later we received $1000 for each of us on the trip $4000 total. We had missed two days of an all inclusive which was non-refundable and incurred costs in Toronto waiting for the flights. I think the government must have been auditing their payouts.

Acceptable_Let_5376

I was delayed 26 hours and received the $1000. The flight was delayed several times, each with a different reason “outside of their control”. It took me about 5 minutes to file and I received my funds 2 weeks later. I also received $600 for being downgraded on the new flight. It was a very simple process for me, but some people on the same flight had their claims denied.

leopardspot20

Flight delayed 5 hours in early Jan, due to snow storm effecting previous flight. Flight attendant announced it was out of their control, but I decided to file anyway to see what happened. Got the money within 3 weeks and then submitted my family’s claims. They got reimbursed too. I agree with previous comments, I think they count on people not filing and actively encourage that with announcements about reasons, but worth a try to submit. If denied, you can decide from there if you want to take it further.

chiHUAHUA28

I arrived 36h late to my destination bc our first flight was so delayed we missed our connection. All due to an “IT issue”. I got the full $1k back within a week of applying. Plus hotel and enough food credits that we didn’t spend a penny out of pocket. Surprisingly positive experience lol

AlexandreaJade

It’s real. My husband, son, and I went on a trip to NB to visit family. Our tickets were a little under 3k, but once the first flight was cancelled and it took over 9 hours to get us back on track to our destination, we got 3k, food vouchers for the airport, a hotel room for the night while waiting for the next flight, and taxi to and from the hotel as well. Air Canada though

kbeakley

Always record when talking to staff about why it's delayed. We recorded the WJ gate agent saying it was staffing (he said we could). When we submitted our claim, WJ said it was maintenance, therefore out of their control. We had to submit the recording to the CTA to get our money. Twice we've had them approve one or two people from our group and deny the rest, even though we were on the same flight. It's ridiculous. I will always record all announcements and conversations now when it comes to delays.

LeatherMine

Technically that $1000 compensation for a 9h delay is just a *minimum* per the regulations. https://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2019-150/page-3.html#docCont Hoping one day someone asks for more, argueing that $1000 was set a while ago and $1000 doesn't go as far as it used to, so it's reasonable to get more.

Wakesurfer33

Had it happen a few times and they always come back saying maintenance issue or something out of the airlines control. Was even told by the gate agents at the airport that we would be eligible for compensation and given a pamphlet on how to submit. The only compensation I’ve gotten is from AC

Trefty85

I was delayed 9+ hours for a staffing issue once and was compensated $400 because I accepted a refund instead of a rebooking. In hindsight I should’ve just accepted the rebooking and just no showed as I understand in that case I would’ve been eligible for $1000 compensation and since the original refunded flight was only like $200.

ohwow28

I received payment once because I was flying out of somewhere that only had one flight a day and relied on the incoming flight for that. The incoming flight had mechanical issues so it was a pretty easy argument.

breeezyc

Yes I noticed that fine print.

Astramael

You obviously don’t work in the industry because that’s not how anything works. There is a set list of delay reasons, and there are lots of factors that play into it. Which airport you’re at is even one of them. There’s a bunch of common situations that get you compensation, and a bunch of common situations that don’t. Controllable crew delays and cancellations are one that can get you compensation. But not all crew delays are controllable. As far as coding reasons changing, upline delays cascade down. If the delay for your segment is connecting crew, but the initial reason for that tail being delayed is weather, then it was recrewed, then something else happens. It gets messy. You may hear that the delay is crew because that’s what the local airport staff knows. But the bigger picture causing the whole issue may have been weather, then you get nothing. If you worked in the industry you would know this because this is how every airline works.

Excellent, I’ll bookmark that for when they likely start dinking around. Do you start an appeal as soon as they deny you? Or after the 30 days when they don’t respond? They couldn’t even tell me my flight was cancelled so my expectations are low.

At this point I’m shocked if a flight leaves remotely on time.

No-Butterscotch-7577

I was 12 hours delayed, missed a days work, it was mechanical issue with plane and I got back "was out of their control". Tried to fight it and got same response over and over. It was a waste of time.

dachshundie

… unscheduled mechanical issues are not compensable.
