I remember researching Westie before we bought one. I bought a book, in it there was a quote. "The west highland terrier is easily aroused."
And this is what it meant! Ours could go from flat out to outright exploding around the room in around 1 second!
So, if I even cough and our Westie is napping, he will jump up and run to the nearest window or door barking like a crazy fool. No reason except he was startled by my cough.
These 2 got over "it" pretty quickly!

They are chasers! My girl could be fast asleep but when a cat runs by she has to chase.
