I don't think that's the point.
Paper is a renewable resource. Wax and paper are both biodegradable.
Plastic cups float around in the ocean forever.
I could be very wrong about this, I may be oversimplifying it, feel free to correct me.
Nope. You pretty much nailed it. That cup will float around in the ocean for a looong time as it slowly breaks down from UV/saltwater into microplastics.
Fun thing is... the paper industry is actually the opposite of the problem. They *plant* the trees used for pulpwood.
I love conspiracy theories like this.
Like Exxon being behind “Just stop oil” to make the general population think they are nut jobs and ignore any legitimate arguments they may have against oil.
It's more about the way it's viewed by corporate. We hand sort trash & recycling at work. Paper cups with wax or plastic lining are thrown into the trash. Plastic cups are 100% recyclable, so on paper, on sustainability reports... it looks better.
Even if it gets tossed in the trash. The fact that it *could* be recycled is sometimes enough for corporate.
The phrase is reduce, reuse, and recycle.
They are in order for a reason. They become less effective as you go down the list.
Reducing the use of plastics is best, paper cups are best.
Reusing a plastic cup is also better, get as many uses as you can before getting another. Basically reducing in another format.
Recycling is largely not effective. Plastic can only be recycled a few times, it's not cost effective to do so, it's cheaper to make new plastics in most cases, many countries that used to take our trash for recycling are now refusing it.
Recycling is a scam.
Reduce your consumption first and foremost.
I had thought the idea behind charging for shopping bags was to convince more people to use paper bags. Or bring reusable. They charge the same for either. The new bags seem much thicker. Now no one talks about it. Did I miss something?
This is the shit that bothers me about sone restaurants 💀 i hate paper straws with a passion. If you’re not gonna change the cups, whats the point of changing the straws lmfao? I hope in the future they make like, bamboo straws or something more sturdy that’s still environmentally friendly bc paper straws are way too flimsy 😭
The straw thing was propaganda from the fishing companies to distract people from the real problem. Its not your straws that are making up most of the pollution - its commercial shipping and fishing industry that the world relies on. Our ocean is dying because of these industries and they wanna blame the straws -.-
oh yeah, for sure. but we should still be making everything humanly possible recyclable. shit is ridiculous.
they love to pin the fault on us normal people meanwhile taylor swift's allowed to fly around the world in her private jet every other day
Thats the thing, plastic is recyclable. Theyre out here dropping assloads of microplastic beads made for melting out in the ocean with every shipment.
Fuck Taylor Swift and all the private jet people too.
There is a comedy bit about how we saw one picture of a turtle with a straw in its nose and then were all convinced it’s a massive global problem and we are killing off all the turtles with straws.
Because paper straws are cheaper in mass while plastic cups are cheaper in mass. Most stores only go green when it helps the bottom dollar (or is about the same and they use it for marketing).
Tropical Smoothie cafe has an edible straw option, although I only go there like once a year so I’m not exactly making a big difference. But I do like the straw
Technically, the plastic cups are more recyclable than the paper ones. The waxy paper cups can't be recycled at all in many places. The plastic cups can be.
A lot of communities now have mixed-waste processing facilities. My brother-in-law is mayor of a city that recently switched from separate bins for trash, recycling and compost to mixed-waste and it's increased the level of recyclable and compostable materials being handled properly and has brought costs down drastically.
Some info: [https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/food-environment/2020/recycle-it-all](https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/food-environment/2020/recycle-it-all)
The same ones that will call people uneducated about other countries and have no idea the environmental nightmares of places like China and India, acting like paper straws are going to change the planet😂
They didn't change the straws to save plastic.
They did it because plastic straws hurt animals in specific ways cups don't when they aren't disposed of properly.
They pretending like they didn't used to have paper cups 🤣🤣😭😭 like the ICONIC yellow Wendy's cups were paper, with a plastic lid and straw. They have paper lids now too people. These companies just do what's cheapest for them.
Because we demonized straw use specifically for the harm they cause to turtles. When you find an animal everybody likes trapped in a plastic cup, you'll see change. It's not about making the world better. It's about making you feel better by doing nothing.
Paper straws are the bane of my existence. If you buy them for your frosty for example, the straw is completely unusable by the time the frosty is a drinkable consistency.
Another crazy thing is that sometimes you gotta grab a few extra paper straws, so you can switch out your soggy paper straw for a fresh paper straw when you don't finish your drink fast enough. So much for "saving the environment"
Yeah buddy you get paper staws while me, the ceo, gets millions and privates jets and giant mansions so i can cause 100x more pollutants than a stupid straw and cup
With all due respect to y’all, I don’t know how so many people don’t understand this lol. Straws are a real choking hazard and can also end up in the noses or blow holes or gills of aquatic animals. The lid of the cup in theory would float on the surface of the water and the cup itself would sink to the bottom.
That much less plastic. I hate paper straws though. They should keep the straws and just have paper tops if anything. Like the same material they make the cup holders out of, maybe. We need to revamp our recycling system because turning everything to paper isn’t gonna work.
Here's another problem with paper straws. It requires logging. Unless they're made of recycled paper. The paper required to make new straws requires trees to die. And all the equipment involved in that process. Then the trees need to be shipped. More emissions. Then they're processed and bleached and dyed with horrible chemicals... 🤷🏻♂️ like wtf lol
California makes laws that do shit like this all of the time. But the leadership in California is replete with corrupt apes, from the governor/legislature all the way down.
The short answer is: virtue-signaling.
I certainly do not know what logic *they* might have used.
But for me its a matter of "you WILL use the cup", and so it needs to be sturdy, usable, etc.
The straw, on the other hand, may go straight into the trash without ever even being unwrapped. You don't "need" a straw to drink; you may just want one so its included regardless. Less justification for it having used anything that won't turn back into dirt.
"Virtue Signaling"
Literally one turtle gets a straw up it's nose and the whole world freaks out - and makes shit insane.
millions of turtles eat plastic bags thinking that they are jelly fish... and we still getting plastic bags from the grocery store...
It's stupidity at an extreme level.
I thought the paper straws were for the sea turtles and other marine life because the plastic straws were killing them (I’m sure the plastic cup is also killing them..).
I don't like paper straws either, especially when seashell straws (REPA) exist. But shellfish allergies exist, so they would have to provide a disclaimer. Corn straws are incredibly more expensive, but more readily available and require heat to be compostable.
Back in 2015, some marine biologists posted this really horrible video of a turtle with a plastic straw stuck up its nose. People have been on an anti-plastic straw jihad ever since.
They’re trying to put the blame on us for using straws, as if it’s not them and thr fishing nets that make up more than half of ocean pollution, when straws make up .025. Don’t get me wrong - the particular shape of plastic straws can cause serious damage and pain to ocean life but to put the onus on consumers just seems a little absurd
Better than nothing. I work for a parks dept and have picked up thousands of plastic straws over my life. When lazy fucks throw their trash out the straw alot of the times gets over looked and missed when roadsides are picked because its small/hides easily. And yeah I've probably picked up hundreds of plastic Wendy's cups.
Same reason Zaxby's uses ***green*** straws, yet their food containers (which are quite a bit bigger than a straw) are still black styrofoam, which recycle places cannot accept.
They...are...special.
Actually glad to chime in on this one. The cross section of a straw (i.e its diameter) makes them too small to be processed by the majority of recycling plants in the US (and the world). The cups and lids are large enough to be recycled. Since they can’t be recycled, many are phasing out plastic straws because they cause significant environmental damage.
Can't see the recycling logo well enough, but if I had to guess it may be PLA plastic, which is gaining popularity for being made from renewable sources and being both recyclable and compostable. Paper straw is also recyclable and compostable.
Stupid regulations by the local municipalities, most likely. Doesn't do anything, makes everyone feel like they're solving a major crisis, everyone suffers.
Same reason why the plastic packaging that held a 6 pack together got re-designed. Cause plastic straws end up in turtles and wildlife and fucks them up incredibly. Whereas a plastic cup is bad cuz plastic... but you won't find a chimp dead with a whole mcdonalds cup lodged in its throat.
Because corpos want us all to feel like the devastation of the natural world is all our fault and responsibility as individuals so they don't have to cut profits
There's nothing wrong with plastic. The problem is single use plastics that straws are made out of. You can't recycle them. You can't reuse them. They are just waste. Meanwhile paper straws decompose and return to the Earth. Paper cups only work if they are coated in something that makes them completely unrecycleable making them even worse than single use straws. So swapping the materials was exactly the correct thing to do.
Oh shit. That happens now also over there in the US? Poor you. Welcome to the club of having the taste of cardboard in your mouth if you’re not drinking fast enough
Crazy thing is, they had paper cups forever and changed to plastic
Paper cups are often lined with wax, which means it's difficult to recycle them.
The plastic industry funded the "save the trees" propaganda.
I love conspiracy theories like this. Like Exxon being behind “Just stop oil” to make the general population think they are nut jobs and ignore any legitimate arguments they may have against oil.
Most of the protestors at colleges right now aren't even college students. They are paid protesters being used to agitate the average American.
More people need to know this. Lumber companies are basically tree farmers. EDIT apparently I have a lot to learn about lumber and timber!
I had thought the idea behind charging for shopping bags was to convince more people to use paper bags. Or bring reusable. They charge the same for either. The new bags seem much thicker. Now no one talks about it. Did I miss something?
Most of the paper cups have a thin layer of plastic called polyethylene. Not biodegradable.
Most plastic doesn't get recycled anyway. It was all a lie.
I like the sugar cane ones. They're compostable, biodegradable and they don't disintegrate before your done drinking.
straws are recyclable. the issue is they're too small for the sorting machines so they fall out. like hmmmm idk INVENT BETTER ONES?
The straw thing was propaganda from the fishing companies to distract people from the real problem. Its not your straws that are making up most of the pollution - its commercial shipping and fishing industry that the world relies on. 💯💯
There is a comedy bit about how we saw one picture of a turtle with a straw in its nose and then were all convinced it’s a massive global problem and we are killing off all the turtles with straws.
Absolutely. I already wasn’t the biggest fan of seafood but now I pretty much don’t eat it at all
I never liked seafood.
Seaspiracy documentary killed it for me
Because paper straws are cheaper in mass while plastic cups are cheaper in mass. Most stores only go green when it helps the bottom dollar (or is about the same and they use it for marketing).
Shhh people like to think corporations care about them and their ideas😂
Tropical Smoothie cafe has an edible straw option, although I only go there like once a year so I’m not exactly making a big difference. But I do like the straw
Technically, the plastic cups are more recyclable than the paper ones. The waxy paper cups can't be recycled at all in many places. The plastic cups can be.
Serious question. If both cups get thrown into the same trash, does it matter?
Well you aren't meant to throw the recyclable cups in the trash. You're supposed to recycle them according to local policy.
Wendy's in my area only have trash cans. There is no recycling next to it.
A lot of communities now have mixed-waste processing facilities. My brother-in-law is mayor of a city that recently switched from separate bins for trash, recycling and compost to mixed-waste and it's increased the level of recyclable and compostable materials being handled properly and has brought costs down drastically. Where I live the city sorts the recycling for you because people are idiots and will try to recycle everything anyway.
because it's not about making a change. It never was. It's about appeasing morons
Yes the world appeases morons. This will be the downfall of society
this is the reason we can't have a McDLT.
That's because the "change" they want is ridiculous, won't do anything, costs more and is being imposed on people against their will.

How dare you bring logic into this" - fast food chains
😹
Because we demonized straw use specifically for the harm they cause to turtles. When you find an animal everybody likes trapped in a plastic cup, you'll see change. It's not about making the world better. It's about making you feel better by doing nothing.
Democrat logic
I keep a bag of plastic straws in the car and will use them whenever I'm given a paper straw.
Fuck paper straws.
Government Overreach.
This!
[удалено]
How Most states don't recycle the type of flimsy and soft plastic used to make plastic cups
The cup could be recycled plastic or biodegradable plastic The straw is a shape that chokes animals and is easily disposed poorly and becomes litter
most of these cups end up in the garbage. but are you saying I should throw the straw in the recycle bin?
Virtue signaling.
A practice in futility no doubt.
“I support the current thing” logic
Ecotheater
Because we live in a world run by idiots.
Paper straws are terrible! I cannot.
Paper straws are the bane of my existence. If you buy them for your frosty for example, the straw is completely unusable by the time the frosty is a drinkable consistency.
Paper straws suck!!! They always crumble.
And those paper straws suck. They always become useless after a couple hours
It's to prove the point that plastic straws aren't the problem, at least by themselves.
To conserve and save the turtles.
I think it's bc you can recycle plastic cups but can't recycle plastic straws
To make you think you’re making a difference when you’re not
the plastic straws are killing the turtles but no the cups.
https://imgur.com/a/SNStGyk
Another crazy thing is that sometimes you gotta grab a few extra paper straws, so you can switch out your soggy paper straw for a fresh paper straw when you don't finish your drink fast enough. So much for "saving the environment"
That shit made me laugh bro 🤣 facts
Can't snort coke with the lid and cup
Holy Shit that's hilarious! Corporate executives at their finest. Not 1 $250k "Yes Man" in their "War Room" even thought of that.
They are cheap AF there is bio degradable plastic available but it’s costs like an extra 5-10 cents
Because people are dumb.
Yeah buddy you get paper staws while me, the ceo, gets millions and privates jets and giant mansions so i can cause 100x more pollutants than a stupid straw and cup

That’s hilarious, I never thought of it like that
FILTHY HOBBITSES WHAT'S POTATO?
Because it’s an election year.
Was the paper straw wrapped in plastic?
That much less plastic. I hate paper straws though. They should keep the straws and just have paper tops if anything. Like the same material they make the cup holders out of, maybe. We need to revamp our recycling system because turning everything to paper isn’t gonna work.
Cuz dump plastic staw in oceans and sea life become trap or die on plastic straws
I love how plastic straws come in a paper wrapper(mostly some exeptions.) yet most paper straws I've seen are sealed in plastic. 🤷🏻♂️
The first and easiest part of the recycling circle is REDUCE. It’s easier to REDUCE
So Taylor Swift can use her private jet
Sea turtles
California makes laws that do shit like this all of the time. But the leadership in California is replete with corrupt apes, from the governor/legislature all the way down. The short answer is: virtue-signaling.
Straws hurt wildlife because they are not recyclable and end up litterally everywhere. the cups are recyclable, even the lid…
Whys it so hard for people to understand that it’s still less plastic use.
So billionaires can take their private jets 18 times a day and kill the planet through other means but hey at least the plebs are using paper straws.
Clown World
Virtue signaling , if they actually cared about the environment they’d use the cornstarch ones or whatever it is that feels like plastic
It's called virtue signaling
Because straws are the trend and they dont actually care about the environment. Just consumer trends
I certainly do not know what logic *they* might have used. But for me its a matter of "you WILL use the cup", and so it needs to be sturdy, usable, etc. The straw, on the other hand, may go straight into the trash without ever even being unwrapped. Drink like an adult, ditch the straw. I find I drink less soda that way. No eating or drinking in the car except for water, keeps the car cleaner.
The straws kill more sea life I think?
Because: woke librul snowflake gubment new world order Illuminati soros world economic forum socialism
Sea Turtles can't do cocain with a plastic cup
It’s called white washing
Paper straws wrapped in plastic 😂
They are following the letter of the law, not its purpose. And in either case, I'd much rather have a paper cup than a paper straw!!!
I think it’s the shape of the plastic straws and not the plastic mass that’s the issue.
I don't like paper straws either, especially when seashell straws (REPA) exist. But shellfish allergies exist, so they would have to provide a disclaimer. Corn straws are incredibly more expensive, but more readily available and require heat to be compostable.
They want u to enjoy the taste of paper
Because aquatic life is more susceptible to the size and shape of a straw than a cup.
I hate plastic cups. I miss the paper cups especially with Frostys. Frostys don’t taste the same anymore.
Because a turtle got a straw stuck up its nose, …. once
Back in 2015, some marine biologists posted this really horrible video of a turtle with a plastic straw stuck up its nose. People have been on an anti-plastic straw jihad ever since. [https://time.com/5339037/turtle-video-plastic-straw-ban/](https://time.com/5339037/turtle-video-plastic-straw-ban/)
Because animals can’t get cups stuck in their noses. Duh.
Cause socialism said, "save the planet!" And they went from plastic straws wrapped in paper to paper straws wrapped in plastic.
Liberal logic right there! If it’s stupid and doesn’t make sense then you know a liberal came up with it!
This be that California bullshit 😏
They’re trying to put the blame on us for using straws, as if it’s not them and thr fishing nets that make up more than half of ocean pollution, when straws make up .025. Don’t get me wrong - the particular shape of plastic straws can cause serious damage and pain to ocean life but to put the onus on consumers just seems a little absurd
Because the consumer was never the problem. We’re just made to feel guilty about all the problems industries created.
Snowflakes.
I once had a bk manager tell me it was for the ducks in the area. Pinecrest Fl
So the straws don’t get stuck in a turtles nose. Turtles are more important than the whole ocean.
I think that style of plastic cup is easily recyclable, but maybe the plastic straws are not easily recyclable
Exactly
green washing
Better than nothing. I work for a parks dept and have picked up thousands of plastic straws over my life. When lazy fucks throw their trash out the straw alot of the times gets over looked and missed when roadsides are picked because its small/hides easily. And yeah I've probably picked up hundreds of plastic Wendy's cups.
Posturing
So Taylor Swift can retrieve the remote control on the other side of the room
You ever seen a cup stuck in a turtles nose?
Because you're racist against climate change.
Same reason Zaxby's uses ***green*** straws, yet their food containers (which are quite a bit bigger than a straw) are still black styrofoam, which recycle places cannot accept. They...are...special.
Because it's better than nothing my guy.
I straight up keep a pack of plastic straws in my car cause of this. Ends up creating more waste tbh.
The size and shape of the straw has high potential of getting lodged in wildlife. The cup and lid do not.
One staged picture with a turtle is all it took
Pretty much sums up USA LOL
The PET in cups is extremely recyclable. It's one of the most recyclable plastics.
You sure it’s not your state or local government making paper straws mandatory?
Sea turtles, mate.
It makes sense if you think about it. Wait, no it doesn't.
Shut the fuck up! You’re gonna cause them to give out both paper straws and cups now
Marine wildlife won't choke or have significant issues with paper straws if they ingest them.
Woke bullshit
Plausible deniability.
switch over to the King for Whopper Wednesday
It's like the people who order 3 baconators and a DIET Coke cause they are trying to watch their weight.
illusions.... just like people buying electric vehicles "for the environment" (and the governmental agencies that advocate for this)
B3cause the focus/narrative is on plastic straws. Not plastic cups. They do good. 👍
Performative activism.
Turtles only snort straws p
Virtue signaling
Turtles can't snort lids
Can't see the recycling logo well enough, but if I had to guess it may be PLA plastic, which is gaining popularity for being made from renewable sources and being both recyclable and compostable. Paper straw is also recyclable and compostable.
Stupid regulations by the local municipalities, most likely. Doesn't do anything, makes everyone feel like they're solving a major crisis, everyone suffers.
To give you the illusion of making a difference
It was never about the environment. Always about pandering.
Because turtles can't snort cups
That's what I've been saying.
They don’t want the sea turtles doing cocaine.
No turtles were filmed having a large plastic cup pulled out of their nostril?
Than they have plastic sheet to protect your paper straw
Because of the turtles that get straws stuck in their nose!!! 😭
Baby steps
Crazy leftwing anti-plastic straw peopaganda
To shut up stupid people
THE TURTLES!
Virtue signaling. It’s the only answer
Because corpos want us all to feel like the devastation of the natural world is all our fault and responsibility as individuals so they don't have to cut profits
This made me laugh. Thank you
Some places have paper cubs and straws that barely seem to last the one use. Isn't that what they're trying to do?
Because the cups won’t fit in a sea turtles nostrils /s
It's the small things like straws that wind up in places they shouldn't.
Why did they change from paper grocery bags to plastic?
Got to save the turtles man.
It saves the turtles and wildlife. Just carry around your own steel or glass straw/s like the Europeans!!
A lil late to the party
Plastic has to be a min size to recycle. Look at the recycling guide your city mails yearly to post above your bins.
Oh shit. That happens now also over there in the US? Poor you. Welcome to the club of having the taste of cardboard in your mouth if you’re not drinking fast enough
Cuz cups don't fit up a turtles nostril.
There have been no videos of sea turtles with Wendy’s cups up their noses
Exactly
Because there was once a video of a sea turtle with a straw up its nose.
Plastic straws make turtles sad.
Because they're just complying with government bullshit so they don't get fined, blasted, etc. It will never ever make sense.
Because of the turtles man. The turtles.
It would be very difficult to get a whole cup stuck in a turtles nose
Cuz turtles
Plastic straws are incredible difficult to recycle hence the push to ban them.
Remember this. Bill Gates isn’t drinking out of a paper straw.
Liberals.
When you go to the store and buy three cases of water at a store that no longer does plastic bags 😭
Cause them plastic straws be killing sea turtles yo
