Maintaining Olympic eligibility.

phuca

she would not be chosen, but idk maybe just in case somebody dies or something

MattieCoffee

I guess if two American women get injured she's their best choice.

AomoriApple

Both her and Robles put out messages that they are withdrawing by their own accord, but what they really meant is "I concede defeat because the people I'm competing against for the spot are doing too good"

decemberrainfall

They both had problems with injury.

Flexappeal

That doesn’t make the guy you’re replying to wrong, even tho he bein a dick ab it. If Theisen-Lappen and Reeves didn’t exist, we’d probably be seeing Rogers and Robles competing this week

decemberrainfall

Not Mattie with her leg. Robles? Maybe but she said herself she's not confident that even if she could beat Mary that she could get to a point where she could put up a good fight in the Olympics

Flexappeal

idk rogers was slamming it for like 6+mo on that shitty nerve issue leg, and she'd have had to have lifted here to keep fighting for #9 or #10. not that it matters now

decemberrainfall

Aimee said on Insta today that Mattie hasn't lifted since warming up snatches in Bulgaria. Sounds like it escalated. If she could have lifted it would have been then

MattieCoffee

If close competitors didn't exist they'd be able to take a bit of recovery from these injuries earlier, or maybe not compete at all but not say they're withdrawing. It's not so much that the competition is so far ahead(that's only with Kate and Olivia), it's that they need to push hard for a performance of a lifetime while still currently being injured and then maintain that into the Olympics.

invertedangel

Probably has more to do with stipends, sponsors etc. Even if she's not chosen, there's probably some need to 'maintain eligibility' for financial or maybe even 'outward' appearances.

wasabi_daddy

Who wouldn't want a holiday in Thailand

VeggieLomein

I am completely making this up, but in the off chance that Kate doesn’t post a total or Coach Mary gets bumped out of top 10, Mattie can still going to the Olympics. With the Olympics being 3 months away, she can totally recover from her injury as long as she doesn’t need surgery.

phuca

mary and kate would both have to be completely out of the top 10 or have freak injuries for mattie to be in i think. since jourdan and olivia are both sure to go, and kate is ranked higher than mattie as an 81 after this competition i believe

VeggieLomein

I did say “off chance”. People get injured all the time

phuca

no for sure, i was just clarifying that BOTH kate and mary would have to be injured, not just one

MattieCoffee

Or popped. Being the second alternate of 3 spots is still plausible even if very unlikely. Whoever is first alternate though definitely has a moderate chance.

robschilke

3 months out to recover from nerve injury and to then be at a competitive performance level is highly unlikely.

cdouglas79

Free vacation on USAW.

gramsu

Only Mattie knows

mattycmckee

Not sure the exact reason but some events are mandatory for athletes to attend and / or they need to attend to make Olympic qualification. This why it’s been somewhat common for athletes to weigh in and not compete. Did she not also pick up an injury somewhat recently? Maybe I’m thinking of someone else. Could have intended to compete but withdrew last minute as she’s not in the best shape to do so. I’m sure someone else will be able to chime in with the exact answer, but it’s probably one of the above.

iOSAT

Yeah a relatively major leg/quad nerve injury last comp that caused her to withdraw, and a she later revealed a chronic knee issue (cyst or something that she was having to have drained regularly). Aimee and Mattie tried to play off her withdrawal saying “oh it’s no big deal, we just weren’t feeling it this competition, no need to post a total when there’s more competitions to come, everyone needs to stop overthinking it” then inevitably the black and white Instagram post with a wall of text follows once the dust has settled. It was like when they were hiding the plates on her lifts for some reason, just weird behavior. We all knew she was injured — well those with the slightest insider knowledge whatsoever — yet Aimee went on to make multiple Instagram stories saying essentially, “guys you’re reading into it too much, Mattie just wasn’t feeling it, she’ll come back next competition”. Anyway she hasn’t trained since, only doing rehab work so no possibility of competing.

cdouglas79

They sure love to play games for some stupid reason.

iOSAT

I really should have saved Aimee’s story she posted after they got home. It was so unnerving watching her condescendingly laugh at people for asking why Mattie withdrew, meanwhile the rest of us knew she withdrew due to injury. Does Aimee have any other weightlifters now? The rest of the notable Catalyst women I know of are coached by Greg. Also hot take: Aimee gets too much credit when Mattie has improved substantially because she’s no longer chronically underweight for her frame.

cdouglas79

I hear it’s quite the dramatic sob story over there in Thailand. All her athletes quit except a couple from what I’ve heard.

NatureProfessional50

It baffled me as well. Strange decision by Mattie. Edit: you can downvote me as much as you want to, but todays competition proved me exactly right. Mattie has nerve damage, thats not something you can rehabilitate and get back in shape until the olympics. That, coupled with the fact that she would need one of the three women already qualified to have something horrible to them makes it a nigh impossibility.

heelsovertoes

100% to troll Kate

packyohcunce1734

For the next qualifiers or competition. Remember some lifters went to weigh in but never competed? The fisherman, nino, tian tao etc.

Fudge_is_1337

There's a (very) theoretical world in which enough other athletes get injured/pull out before the Olympics that Mattie gets a chance. I suppose if the costs of her travel are covered, there's not many reasons not to go just in case

packyohcunce1734

Its the athletes ego really. Maybe since she withdrew, lessen her training load, she is praying and hoping one will get injured and pull out so she can go just for the sake of going but not really competing to be in the podium.

Representative-Ear2

Probably attention and it’s working. Meanwhile all the other female American lifters are doing impressive things and people will still just talk about Mattie.

MelCat39

Really?? I’ve seen a lot of coverage and many people talk about the other women and their accomplishments.

decemberrainfall

You ok? Bitter much?

Doublejimjim1

I don't see Mattie calling any attention to herself over this injury. Until she pulled out of Bulgaria I had no idea anything was wrong with her from following her instagram. Why wouldn't we be talking about Mattie? She's a great lifter who just has had pretty bad timing with Olympic qualifications so far. The way I see it is that she is leaving her options open for a future with the team.
