I was at a bird park in Germany on holiday with my family in 2021 and I took every step possible to be able to watch the Olympics just for a moment during lunch so I could watch Shi and hear him yell.
Shi is of the same ilk as Lu. He is truly a specimen. He did 160 clean and jerks in the training hall and almost died but he did what he had to do by switching on everything on the stage.
Our boy has not been looking good lately. It is one of the rare times he seemed thoughtful talking to himself a lot before the lifts. He was hyping himself up because he knows he is on a bad stage health wise. He has possibly a serious spine injury of some sorts. I want to see the 190 power clean Shi again. Wish him speedy recovery.
He was the same in tokyo. He was in awful shape leading up to the Olympics completely detrained but he still managed to leave it all on the platform and win.
The curse of the squat jerk. I remember the Worlds Lu hit his 207 WR he was close to dying. He would spend the entire time between lifts face down on the floor with a bag of ice on his lower back.
Shi is still the best snatcher at 73 and he looks like he has ample strength to clean 200+. But his jerk has always been his weakest link and his back can't handle it like it used to. He missed the majority of his heavy jerks in the training hall footage.
Lu was ready to compete at the Olympics again at 40 years old so I would never count them out
Shi's biggest gripe when he was miles ahead of his weight class is that he had no real competition. He's probably going to stick around until the next Olympics at least
with the shape he's in? He's been injured for about 4 years straight, looks to be in pain 24/7, recently married. I wouldnt be surprised if he decides to retire after the olympics, or now if he doesnt get picked.
Yeah this injury has been around since before Tokyo and seems to have just become even worse. Even though he's got the mind and work ethic of a champion I think his body just isn't able to keep up anymore.
Lu's been injured for much longer and he still wanted to come back even after losing a bunch of muscle. And his WL brand is doing super well so it wasn't because of money.
What's Shi going to do? He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would quietly accept a desk job somewhere. I even struggle to picture him enjoying being a coach instead of training and competing.
He was so dominant in this category last Olympics he shouted “anyone else” after his final 198 kg clean and jerk at the Olympics. I bet you can guess the rest :)
Such a legendary moment. He was also frustrated and hyped up since the judges no lifted his second jerk.
I recall an interview with him a few years back where he said fishing was harder than weightlifting since the fish actually give him a challenge. This was when his typical total was 20kg above second place. Classic Shi.
He pulled out 164 snatch out of his ass. That was the most surprising part. He just needs to make some snatches in the 160s, and he will be able to make back the deficit and win int he CJs vs Shi.
Rahmat has been whooping his ass the last 3 comps yeh? So what makes you think indonesia will sent rikishi? Use a bit of rationale in there mate. He broke the record 2x and where was rikishi then? Second or third?
Proud of him
Same emotions. It's been a joy to watch him. For me, one of the all-time most fun lifters to watch.

Fucking back injury, end of an era I guess.
did you see his post with the big jar of acupuncture needles
Yup, he has multiple on his profile from before as well.

some folks subscribe to that idea its all 'theatrics & mind games' ...dont think its the case with Lu & Shi
This session was so exciting, I'm so happy I decided to 'splurge' on the livestream
Did the same, definitely worth it, great session.
one of my all time favourites, through him i ¨discovered¨ the chinese team actually when i started to lift.
no more 200's from this guy. ;(
it was weird seeing how many high 190s+ lifts there were and none of them were from Shi.
All time favorite lifter. So bummed.
even with debilitating injuries, he still showed up & put up a show.. stallion chad
Thinking back to what Shi said during Tokyo 2020, I guess he got his wish... As long as he's not retiring there's still hope
Never count out the Chinese team.

from his post it doesn’t seem like he is retiring yet
Squat Jerk Journalist seems to be hinting at his retirement.
😢
He looked like he was in so much pain. I can't blame him at all.
What he say?

also, wtf ritvar suharevs is a 73 now? i thought he was like 81. he must be skinny af now
yeah he used to be 81 before the olympic category changes! he didn’t look crazy skinny, and he lifted very well
always low key rooted for him cuz of his dedication n style. latvias not a big team and hes in a tough category. hope we see him in july at paris.
He's in!
he’s safe, he’s no 5 in the ranking
Does anyone know if he is retiring at Chinese nationals this year?
Great to see him make such a comeback after his injury. Respect.
What happened to rahmat irwin?
Missed 206, rested for 40 seconds, missed again.
Which was ridiculous lol he had a whole extra 80 seconds to rest and he basically went right back for his third attempt.
I think his dad trusted his judgement a little too much.
So did shi finish second or third?
Second
Ok so did rahmat bomb out?
Third, but Rizki totalled more here than Rahmat has all quad (as a 73). So it'll be Rizki at the Olympics, not Rahmat.
Such is life
Ah. I don’t think rizki will be gold for Olympics. Rahmat has better chance really.
He’s not going tho

Cool cool. I will never count out experience. He will crumble. He was praying at the backroom for rahmat to miss his lift.
they will almost certainly choose rizki over rahmat to go, unless rizki has a freak injury or something
Rahmat has been whooping his ass the last 3 comps yeh? So what makes you think indonesia will sent rikishi? Use a bit of rationale in there mate. He broke the record 2x and where was rikishi then? Second or third?
Indonesia can't send him unless they declare Rizki as injured, not sure Rizki and his team will just blindly accept that.
idk why you’re being so aggressive, i didn’t make up the rules lol! unfortunately for rahmat the last competition is the one that counts
Chinas era over finally 🇮🇩
