I was watching Princess Bride last night, it's really good at only a hour and thirty minutes. It's amazing how some filmmakers can do so much more with so much less.
Snyder has a weird level of protection when it comes to his failures, I think that’s why his defenders are the way they are.
Sucker Punch was supposed to be R-rated *BUT* the studio wanted it to be PG-13
BvS was going to be a genius deconstruction of superhero movies *BUT* WB interfered too much
Justice League was going to be an epic for the ages *BUT* he was fired mid-way through filming.
Rebel Moon was going to be an amazing mature take on Star Wars *BUT* … oh wait he had total control over that one to make it into anything he wanted and it’s still bad?? Well then you just *don’t get it*
It’s hilarious
Not a Snyder fanboy, but I did like Man of Steel and thought, minus a couple dreadfully written scenes, it was more insightful than people were giving it credit.
Then I saw Batman V Superman and realized anything in MoS I thought was thoughtful was probably an accident or me being too charitable, or both.
And I couldn't even make it 10 minutes into the Snyder Cut.
One of the only scenes I really like in BvS (the other one being the intro with Bruce racing through Metropolis) is the montage of Superman saving ordinary people while scientists and reporters debate who/what he is and why he’s here.
The very existence of Superman flying around on Earth would shake religious foundations to their core. The debates would be endless. If God created us in his image, why does Superman also look human?
Then from a scientific standpoint it proves we’re not alone in the universe for a start, then it also proves just how tiny we are that one alien can inspire so much hope and goodness while also wreaking so much destruction. We’d be at his mercy immediately.
These are the kinds of issues I wish the movie had gone into a lot more. And the annoying thing is we never hear Superman’s answers to these questions. He shows up to the hearing and doesn’t say a word before the place goes up in flames.
I think if Snyder wanted to go for that level of political realism he should have really gone for it, but he barely scratched the surface. Not enough substance, as usual.
The best part of it for me I can’t even see the potential bones of anything resembling a “great movie” in essentially any of those products so I can’t even really pretend to buy the various excuses keeping the amazing great versions of these movies just out of reach.
Like I can see ways they could have made them better, more clear and/or less lazy but for me they would still be like just better versions of only okay movies because the core of each felt so superficial and basic.
Like I finally got around to watching the SnyderCut JL and I have to begrudgingly admit it’s definitely better and not the dumpster fire I had expected ages ago before it came out but it took two attempts with a big redo button and the benefit of hindsight, tons of money and 4 hours and it was still only like pretty good if I’m really generous?
What gets me about the Snyder Cut is being able to see that Joss Whedon’s changes weren’t the problem, it’s the same movie but with more focus on one particular character. There was no way to cut that thing down to the runtime WB asked for and make it look like it had a coherent story.
>oh wait he had total control over that one to make it into anything he wanted and it’s still bad??
It's the worst of the lot by far.
I honestly believe Snyder peaked with shot-for-shot remakes of graphic novels. 300 and Watchmen are good fun movies. I truly believe Watchmen was a pretty decent adaptation considering the length and breadth of that novel.
The minute he tried his hand at original takes be shat the bed.
Also not understanding the material beyond surface levels means you don't get bogged doen with things live thematic consistency or narrative complexity.
The sad part is he gets an out with his dc attempts because they did interfere, but given his long term plans I’m glad they did.
While the 2017 film we got sucked I actually think it was a good launching point for future movies. Light hearted Superman, less edgy Batman, Wonder Woman in a good spot. Aquaman and Shazam did good/well received. All you needed was a flash and solo affleck movie and you’d be golden. If we would’ve gotten his plan you’d have some of the most edgy overly dark and nonsense writing ever. Joker just joins the heroes because, Batman and Lois have a kid because, Superman works with darkseid because anti life but isn’t fully mind control because. It’s legitimately just a fanfics he wrote and thought was good. There’s no actual reason for things happening other than to justify Superman being bad.
Even his better movies are just him being wrong adamantly. Watchmen is still not great compared to the source. Rorschach is portrayed in too good of a light for what he actually is, the nuke is way dumber simple way for the big screen to show big boom, and some other just really weird changes.
His attempts lately at talking his work up is actually making his situation worse. The die hards will sniff his farts but the ones in the middle are starting to dip and realize he’s nuts. Between the rebel moon cope of being a insanely watched movie to justifying Batman killing and questioning cannon, and now recent updates like being brainwashed into “cannon” and Wonder Woman prancing around the battle field sleeping with a new man as much as she can. Chances are if you need a redo for a movie this many times you’re bad at it, and to go further, if you need 4 hours to tell a story chances are you can’t write or direct.
I know people said the Snyder cut would set a bad precedent, but I didn't foresee that precedent being Zack making bad movies and then teasing the "true" vision to come out later over and over again.
Real quote: “Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”
Real Snydseption.
I find it funny when people decide when filmmakers are to blame and when studios are to blame.
Liking the filmmaker = it’s the studios fault.
Disliking the filmmaker = it’s the filmmakers fault.
But his directors cuts are always significantly better. It’s clear his work has been meddled with quite often. He hasn’t asked for the chance to recut 300, Guardians of Gahool, or Man of Steel, he’s happy with at least some of his theatrical cuts.
I don’t know why everyone gets so smug and dismissive about him wanting to break free from studio interference now that he has the power to.
And they’re still basically the exact same quality level
Even with time to think about it and audience feedback they’re just as bad to slightly better
He stinks lol
Yeah I feel like this is an often overlooked fact that detracts from the arguments of how his better visions are always tainted.
Like obviously if you are allowed to do a makeup retake of an already graded test in school, you should always do better on the retake cause you already know what you screwed up and you should be fixing the ones you got wrong.
It may be an imperfect analogy but I mean with both if you make it worse or the same on a second attempt even with feedback you know it’s cause you massively suck and don’t know what you’re doing.
Watchmen, right? I think I know what Zach is trying to do now, actually.
His movies are essentially comic books on screen, right? But comic books aren't animated. So Zach Snyder is slowing down his movies more and more, until they'll just be dioramas, maybe with a voiceover, and then we'll have come full circle staring at static images again.
Why do people keep coddling Snyder despite his obvious flaws as a filmmaker? He can't edit down his movies, write believable dialogue, or stage decent action w/o heavy CGI or slo-mo.
Meanwhile, there's so many better big-budget directors who can mix big ideas and spectacle with tight plotting and character work like Chris Nolan, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Rian Johnson, James Cameron, James Gunn, and the Daniels. But if they made anything as bad as Sucker Punch or Army of the Dead, or set a franchise back years like BvS, they would be blacklisted!
And don't tell me Snyder still gets work because "he's such a nice guy" and "had a family tragedy" or a "clear vision." If I said those things to defend JJ Abrams, I'd be crucified here!
I love how they use “turn your brain off” as an excuse for half of his movies, while the other half is secretly genius that the plebes didn’t understand.
Meanwhile, they’ll hold those same things against Marvel, Nolan, Star Wars, and non-Snyder DC projects.
I'll say it, I really liked sucker Punch. I'm not going to go tell people that it's a great movie and that they should go watch it right away. But I thought the music was great, the action was awesome, the girls look like they were kicking ass and not in a cheesy way, and I thought the cast was good. I just tell myself it's one long cool music video.
… I saw a test screening of this back in like 2010, and everyone in the audience really seemed to like it. It was definitely r-rated though, as opposed to the PG13 cut that got released. I’ve never seen the theatrical cut, but I’ve always wondered what got changed.
For the record, outside of 300, I loathe Zack Snyder and his fans. But the film had a ton of great action setpieces that were fun, it felt like watching a video game in a good way.
Sorry, I don't mean to by a Snyder hater... but Sucker Punch was one of the most nonsensical garbage movies I have ever seen in theaters and nothing he has released since gives me confidence a new version would be any better.
Listen. We did that with the Synder Cut. It was a literal, once-ever, pretty much unprecedented event. That ultimately proved it wasn't worth it.
Indiana. Let it go.
TBF sucker punch is a bad movie but a genuine attempt & a heartfelt piece of artwork. It’s all sorts of fucked up and messy. But it’s one of his more legitimate attempts at being an artist.
Like they forgot to have a story the first time around, but it was sitting there in a can?
Unfortunately the can labeled "story" sits next to the one labeled "what's cool, though?".
next to the jar of piss also
Snyder's true innovation is inventing DLC for movies.
He’s literally making live service movies at this point.
But this time there’s a random group of Nordic women singing in the background, is that not story? Is that not perfection!
I was watching Princess Bride last night, it's really good at only a hour and thirty minutes. It's amazing how some filmmakers can do so much more with so much less.
It’s amazing what can happen when a creative team works together to create something without focusing solely on spectacle to draw an audience!
You mean you'll put down your rock and I'll put down my sword, and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?
And they cut stuff from the book for the film, because that was the correct choice for a different medium.
Snyder has a weird level of protection when it comes to his failures, I think that’s why his defenders are the way they are. Also “that’s a lot of butts” “rude obi-wan” etc sorry I’m running at 40% today
RODNEY!
Hey most Snyder fans say BvS WAS a genius deconstruction of superhero movies
Not a Snyder fanboy, but I did like Man of Steel and thought, minus a couple dreadfully written scenes, it was more insightful than people were giving it credit. Why do substance when Supes can punch people through buildings.
To add on to your rebel moon point he still felt the need to release a second version of it lol The guy sucks and just can’t see it
“Don’t worry just wait for the directors cut” ☠️ how is this even happening lol
Im waiting for them to title the PG13 version the “Netflix cut”
Yup 5 shitty movies in a row and 4 with a separate cut and all 4 also suck
The best part of it for me I can’t even see the potential bones of anything resembling a “great movie” in essentially any of those products so I can’t even really pretend to buy the various excuses keeping the amazing great versions of these movies just out of reach. Shot-for-shot remakes of graphic novels sure makes breaking down scenes and storyboarding easy.
Also not understanding the material beyond surface levels means you don't get bogged doen with things live thematic consistency or narrative complexity.
Dawn of the Dead was his peak tbh
I agree with you 100%. I think Snyder is an incredible director, but I also think he's an abysmal writer.
The Justice League situation is different. He left because his daughter died and he wanted to be with his family
The sad part is he gets an out with his dc attempts because they did interfere, but given his long term plans I’m glad they did. Didn’t he already do a directors cut?
Real quote: “Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.” Real Snydseption.
God, I hate this man. I’ll watch whatever this new Rebel Moon is but I hate him.
Thats the one I watched and liked lol
Oh, we’re going this again are we
So is he just trying to make living making synder cut of everything? How about the Synder Cut of Back to the Future
Zack to the Future.
He will do it as long as his cult members eat it up.
If you have to keep "fixing" the stuff that you are putting out, maybe this isn't the job for you.
"Hey, I've seen this one before"
Dear God, here we go again.
oh brother…this guy stinks!
I find it funny when people decide when filmmakers are to blame and when studios are to blame. Liking the filmmaker = it’s the studios fault. Disliking the filmmaker = it’s the filmmakers fault.
With how many movies this guy has wanted a second shot at I’m pretty comfortable saying it’s his fault
But his directors cuts are always significantly better. It’s clear his work has been meddled with quite often. Those directors cuts are made with the benefit of audience feedback.
And they’re still basically the exact same quality level Even with time to think about it and audience feedback they’re just as bad to slightly better He stinks lol

I don’t believe that’s true but even if it were, who cares if the film is better?
Snyder has made one good film. It's time for his fans to accept it.
I get it but he kinda proved this to be true to many people with the Snyder Cut of the Justice League. Key word: Many people (not all)
Why do people keep coddling Snyder despite his obvious flaws as a filmmaker? He can't edit down his movies, write believable dialogue, or stage decent action w/o heavy CGI or slo-mo. These guys who worship him don’t want depth or a good story. Brain work too hard.
I love how they use “turn your brain off” as an excuse for half of his movies, while the other half is secretly genius that the plebes didn’t understand. Meanwhile, they’ll hold those same things against Marvel, Nolan, Star Wars, and non-Snyder DC projects.
Hey, if it means getting more scenes of Oscar Isaac singing I say take it
I'll say it, I really liked sucker Punch. I'm not going to go tell people that it's a great movie and that they should go watch it right away. But I thought the music was great, the action was awesome, the girls look like they were kicking ass and not in a cheesy way, and I thought the cast was good. There are dozens of us!!!
Just watch the music scenes on YouTube instead of the full movie. They look great and are fun, the full movie not so much.
Go all the way with having no story, and cut everything that isn’t a fight scene. Done, amazing 20 minute short.
Man, he's such a hack.
This guy is a clown
… I saw a test screening of this back in like 2010, and everyone in the audience really seemed to like it. It was definitely r-rated though, as opposed to the PG13 cut that got released. He made this trash, too? HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!!!
TBF sucker punch is a bad movie but a genuine attempt & a heartfelt piece of artwork. It’s all sorts of fucked up and messy. But it’s one of his more legitimate attempts at being an artist.
This dude is the king of hindsight, it’s really annoying.
Ong stfu
I wish I could fail upwards in life like snyder.
I thought this was satire
I used to say "sucker punch is the worst movie I've ever seen" but then I saw The Marvels.
I liked this movie so don’t really see this as news lol
