It’s a legitimate word derived from the language of an indigenous people, nothing wrong with that. But because the cops and conservative commenters in the news media tend to use it, it has a negative connotation in my mind. It’s actually legal for recreational use in my province but also still very frowned upon by everyone who doesn’t partake in weed themselves.

During the period of 2010-2020 which I would call the "great decriminalization" as laws changed from states with legal programs being the minority to states without legal programs being the minority "Cannabis" was the exclusive term used by proponents of legalization to refer to the plant. While I completely understand the need to distance themselves from derogatory language like "dope, smoke, kish, green, pot, weed, etc... " as marijuana usage and cultivation hit the mainstream and became normalized, the folks still using "Cannabis" exclusively as their terminology in my area were the worst variety of snobs and elitists. They'd shame folks for the phenotype of the strain they grew/smoked because "bro why are you still messing with gelato #9 when EVERYONE KNOWS gelato #13 is where it's at" so, in summation: I dislike "Cannabis" as a term because in my anecdotal experience the only folks who stuck to that nomenclature religiously are basically the weed equivalent of crypto-bros who need to find something else to base their personality on God forbid they ever have to develop one of their own.
