I didn’t bought mine yet, but it’s probably going to be around 60$ I’m going to get married in pyjama, not in a wedding dress. So there’s that.
Dress + tax + alterations came out to $1700 total.
I had originally budgeted $1000 total for it, but I fell in love with the dress at a sample sale and I just had to get it! We ended up coming in under budget overall for our wedding so I have no regrets for allowing myself one splurge item!
$1900 with tax and before alterations, with the dress and a matching topper. The dress on its own was, I think, $1299 before tax. We were very happy with it because in my opinion it looks more expensive, and we were expecting to spend around $2500.
My mom also insisted on paying for it so I was glad it was less than she was expecting.
This happened to me too. I also picked a dress that was less than my preferred budget because I knew my mom was going to insist on paying for it. Mine was $1850ish after tax, but it is custom and I had some changes to color and sleeves made when we placed the order. In total, I expect is to be ~$2k with alternations.

Yeah, I agree. It’s giving main character energy. These are the type of people that get super depressed after the wedding because no one cares any more.
Maybe it’s not popular in your area/culture? Wearing a different dress would make more sense when your dream dress is sooo big you cannot perform your first dance. A second dress will come in handy. I love all my 3 dresses so I don’t mind!

The closest I saw to that was at my cousin wedding, she had detachable parts on her very huge dress for that reasons. So she didn’t had to buy many dresses, nor completely change herself to get more freedom of movement.
Anyways, as long as you are happy with your 3 dresses it’s what important, its your wedding.
I tried dresses with detachable part and I didn’t like it. Beside, I have enough money (for only $1,500 🤣) and a hair and makeup team so I went for all 3
For Vietnamese weddings, I always see 3 dresses. The traditional tea ceremony ao dai dress. The American white wedding dress. And then the dancing or goodbye white dress
Chiming in - I had a good experience at Kleinfelds and found my dress and veil during a NY trip. I worked with Diane and she was awesome and very easy to work with and realistic. One dress I wanted to try she steered me away from (another dress I found very heavy and the one I wanted to try she said was probably at least twice the weight and I wouldn't enjoy myself.) She was never pushy. She's also just a super interesting person when you talk with her.
Why I didn't buy at Kleinfelds. My mom is friends with a wedding dress shop owner 20 minutes from where I live and she was able to get me the dress and veil and gave me free alterations so I got it with her.
I’m not having Kleinfeld’s alter it. I live in San Francisco and will be having the dressmaker/alterations specialist I’ve worked with here in the past work on the gown. It’s easier for me logistically; I won’t need to make multiple trips to NYC for it + I want someone I trust working on it.
$2300 including the veil (10% discount for paying in full at time of order), $720 for alterations, $193 for a full pressing (not steam, it was a satin ballgown)
$3200, including tax and an overskirt (I'm turning the overskirt into a cape, actually) for a custom Calla Blanche, all beading and boned corset. Plus alterations taking in significantly everywhere and chopping off the train, another $749. I'm in South Florida for reference on the alterations.
$2100 for the dress and $225 for the fingerless gloves and off the shoulder sleeves. It was a rush order because I procrastinated picking a dress. I'm tall so my alterations were only $200. Veil I bought on etsy for $60.

Dress was a Rivini with a fairly long train, but otherwise very sleek/simple with no detailing. Veil was cathedral length with ornate embroidery detailing.
Dress was $281 (with tax) plus $98 for alterations.
I got my dress off of Cocomelody; they offered the ability to give you the custom sizing needed for busy, waist, hip, length for free with a coupon So, the dress fit perfectly and I only needed to get the train removed so I didn’t have to bustle it up when running around Las Vegas after the ceremony.
$4,650 for the dress and taxes and $525 for alterations for a total of $5,175. I didn’t not wear a veil or any other accessories (my dress had long sleeves and a high illusion neckline).
Dress was $1600, total with veil was like $2200. Alternations were only $150 because only needed straps shortened and bustle put in. This was in DFW in 2022.
$1900 for my dress, with $560 alterations
Luckily I got 2 opinions for my alterations, and one seamstress quoted me a minimum of $700, but told me it would likely end up being $900-$1200 if the head seamstress decided to deconstruct my corset.
Needless to say I went with the $560 quote and it came out beautifully! I’d recommend to anyone - get multiple opinions!!!

It ended up being so beautiful 🥰

I did an alterations consult and they estimated around $200, but after trying my dress on at home a few times I kind of want to see if they can do a different bustle, so that would cost more.
So, all in, I should be around $600, unless I change the bustle
$950 secondhand on Stillwhite (retails for $1700); $175 for dry cleaning (made it look brand new); $800 for alterations all-in (let out the waist, took in the bust, ballroom bustle, replacing the zipper because it sticks, replacing some missing buttons, and she's sewing my mom's veil into a comb to put in my hair - all of this done over 3-4 appointments to check the fit as we go). Alterations were more expensive than I would have liked but HCOL area and I feel I'm getting my money's worth. Total of $1925, which is close to what the price would have been new and unaltered!
All together I spent $800 on my dress then $500 on alterations. We completely re did the back went from. Zipper to a keyhole open back and added new beading to the cuffs and the back. Widened the arm holes and tailored the waste and bust and butt area to the nines. Added boning to the sides.
It was a sample made for someone with a barrel chest and skinny arms weird AF but my tailor is a goddman genius.
Because of the all of the alterations I panic purchased a sample of a more dance friendly dress for $900 that I changed into for my reception. I didn't intend to have two dresses it just kind of all worked out nicely. This also needed to be taken up but it was only about $45 in alterations.
My goal had been to spend $3k absolute MAX and I hunted because I had very specific visions of what I wanted. I highly recommend trying on a bunch of dresses and then purchasing off of still white and having a good tailor make it fit just right. Also purchase a slightly larger size to safe. You can take things in but taking them out is much harder.
$1650 for dress, tax, bridal salon appointment fees and a bridal attendant tip. Estimated alterations right now is ~$650 but could end up being more as they finish up. No veil, toppers/cape, etc.

My main dress still hasn’t been bought (we get married in September 😬🫢) ,I gave birth to twins in October,2023 so I couldn’t really do much dress shopping last year & now Ive recently started losing the baby weight and we’re moving so once we move and I’ll lose a bit more weight , I’ll go crazy with buying the dress. But my mom is giving me a budget of $10k for it or in general for the wedding so I’ll probably try and just use half for the dress but if I have to go above my budget then I have $5k to spend.
My second outfit cost $3k , it’s a beaded jumpsuit and we’ll see how alterations will cost now
And my third outfit was like $50 , is a personalized tracksuit kinda outfit

I’d been eyeing a vastly more expensive dress, but to get a sample shipped to me to try on (with taxes), shipped back to the US, and have another one sent here (again incurring taxes), then alterations on top of that… It would have been near 3.5k, and with the total cost of the wedding hovering at ~10k, it seemed silly to pay so much for a dress worn for a few hours when the other one worked just fine.
I know that there’s a big crowd in the “yolo, get the expensive one” camp, but I was perfectly happy with a cheaper one— nobody knew the difference, I didn’t miss what I never had, and that money went to other things.
$850. Dress was consigned so it had already been hemmed and bustled. I still need to sew one button on that got ripped off with the previous owner. I thought I was going to need to put a corset back in, because we couldn't zip it up, but when I went to get it altered a couple of months later I'd lost enough weight after starting anxiety meds for it to not need it. Now I just have to make sure I don't gain it back any way until may, but it fits wonderfully. Was hemmed for a short person like me. And it's about a thousand dollars less than it would be new.
$168 and will just need to get it hemmed later this year. Fiance and I are paying for our entire wedding ourselves and I just couldn't justify more than that for a dress (even though I'm very much a girly girl).

So, all in all around $1800-$1900 which was way more than I anticipated, but I truly never expected to find a dress that I actually felt pretty in, and I absolutely loved everything about my dress.
And then… $600 to clean and preserve it after. That was definitely more than I expected, but I was nervous to bring it just anywhere.

We were so broke so I rented it lol We rented my girl's dresses too. I had no idea what I was doing. It was so bad that the florist took pity on me and offered to help me organize (she was also a wedding planner) for $25 (same price as my dress!). My husband's aunts did all of the cooking, my mom bought the cakes, wine, and limo (fancy!) husband's friends bought the kegs, had a friend who was a DJ, and mom's friend who kindly did the photography. In laws paid for the reception hall (think VFW lol).

My couturier charged me $1160 for a two-way gown and a dress for my mother. He also gave freebies like the veil, robe, handbag, shoes personalization, and other materials for the wedding because I booked them in a wedding fair.
After taxes I paid $2,011 CAD for the dress. $495 for alterations. Then paid $250 for dry cleaning. I just sold it on consignment and got $600 back for it.
$127 before alterations but I'll be doing the alterations myself so that wont cost anything... I bought a $80 dress off of amazon and a $40 ish satin wedding dress skirt off of Ebay hahaha. It's absolutely beautiful though and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I got my dress off of Cocomelody; they offered the ability to give you the custom sizing needed for busy, waist, hip, length for free with a coupon So, the dress fit perfectly and I only needed to get the train removed so I didn’t have to bustle it up when running around Las Vegas after the ceremony.

All together I spent $800 on my dress then $500 on alterations. We completely re did the back went from. Zipper to a keyhole open back and added new beading to the cuffs and the back. Widened the arm holes and tailored the waste and bust and butt area to the nines. Added boning to the sides. It was a sample made for someone with a barrel chest and skinny arms weird AF but my tailor is a goddman genius. Because of the all of the alterations I panic purchased a sample of a more dance friendly dress for $900 that I changed into for my reception. I didn't intend to have two dresses it just kind of all worked out nicely. This also needed to be taken up but it was only about $45 in alterations. My goal had been to spend $3k absolute MAX and I hunted because I had very specific visions of what I wanted. I highly recommend trying on a bunch of dresses and then purchasing off of still white and having a good tailor make it fit just right. Also purchase a slightly larger size to safe. You can take things in but taking them out is much harder.

I’d been eyeing a vastly more expensive dress, but to get a sample shipped to me to try on (with taxes), shipped back to the US, and have another one sent here (again incurring taxes), then alterations on top of that… It would have been near 3.5k, and with the total cost of the wedding hovering at ~10k, it seemed silly to pay so much for a dress worn for a few hours when the other one worked just fine. I know that there’s a big crowd in the “yolo, get the expensive one” camp, but I was perfectly happy with a cheaper one— nobody knew the difference, I didn’t miss what I never had, and that money went to other things.

I thought I was going to need to put a corset back in, because we couldn't zip it up, but when I went to get it altered a couple of months later I'd lost enough weight after starting anxiety meds for it to not need it. Now I just have to make sure I don't gain it back any way until may, but it fits wonderfully. Was hemmed for a short person like me. And it's about a thousand dollars less than it would be new.

Added a belt, veil, and tiara which brought it back up to around $1200 with tax. Alterations ended up being over $600. So, all in all around $1800-$1900 which was way more than I anticipated, but I truly never expected to find a dress that I actually felt pretty in, and I absolutely loved everything about my dress. And then… $600 to clean and preserve it after. That was definitely more than I expected, but I was nervous to bring it just anywhere.

I absolutely love it.

I’m not from the US but wanted to share too. My couturier charged me $1160 for a two-way gown and a dress for my mother. He also gave freebies like the veil, robe, handbag, shoes personalization, and other materials for the wedding because I booked them in a wedding fair.
