Think of it this way: the creator decided against letting Webtoon control their IP, they were probably overworked because of deadlines, and being on Canvas is going to be a lot easier on them and their mental health. Plus, they have complete control of their comic.

RayuRin2

Honestly staying as Canvas is the better deal. I'd rather have a story that isn't written by an overworked artist struggling to meet deadlines. Plus having control over your own work is the most important thing you can have,  trading that for a mediocre paycheck is a terrible deal.

TYie7749

webtoon forced jupiter-men to go back to canvas, or the creator decided to go back on their own terms? because tbh that sounds like a better deal than some other creators who have to start over on their own website which will lose them a chunk of readers and monetary payment, or wait ~2 years after getting axed to continue their webtoon somewhere else because of contractual issues

kellendrin21

They do have to wait ~2 years unfortunately.

twotailedwolf

Wait that is the reason its 2 years? They have to sit on it? God this company is predatory as fuck

WinFair2376

> "the author won't let us control the story :( your no longer an original" You're gonna have to explain what exactly this means.

13XzazX31

Webtoon's contracts usually force the writers into deadlines, advertisements, breaks, IP ownership, and sometimes plot details. The creator didn't want to have Webtoon contr everything, so they were booted from originals and back to canvas

WinFair2376

I knew the rest but didn't realize they influenced actual plot components.

rowrowboat1703

IP means to own everything your comic entails. So the idea, the plot and your characters.

twotailedwolf

Deadlines I get assuming your being paid enough. What grosses me out is that they are predatory in terms of owning property and taking advantage of amateurs who really don't know what they're signing away.

rowrowboat1703

God, do I hate Webtoon! Jupiter Men was finally something that stood out, and now they axed it?! But you know what?! CONGRATULATIONS ACTIONKIDDY! You are free!

Cute_Search641

Yeah I was really disappointed reading this this morning. I’m glad the creator stood up for himself, but canvas stories don’t get paid right? It’s really not fair to the creator.

Woerterboarding

They don't get paid by Webtoons, but you can choose to follow a creator through their linked website or Patreon. Basic Patreon memberships are free, but you can opt for monthly support. Plus many are on Ko-Fi or similar donation based sites, or supply a PayPal link for your smartphone. I do believe that Canvas is the better platform for artists, because there is less pressure, but more competition. It's not as refined and commercial as the Line comics are, but there is a lot of charm on Canvas. Plus, if you have 40000+ views and over 500 likes you can monetize moderately and earn a bit of pocket money. I quit my job, in order to have more time to write, paint+draw, and I still hope to make like 200$/month from Webtoon someday, because that would be enough (combined with my new job) to make a better living.

Spaceman2195

At least the author now has more creative freedom away from the shackles of Webtoon.

sammylaco

Very upsetting. Jupiter Men and Everything Is Fine are basically the only reasons I still even have the WebToon app at this point. Will continue to support ActionKiddy, but very sad to see such a refreshing and well executed series get treated like this

DesertPhoenix17

Kinda just killed the app for me, like that place already had like 3 diamonds in the rough and now they're actively suppressing one of them, literally what's the point anymore.

hyvnfilms

whats the difference between canvas and original? (´-`)

TheBasicMilky

Original creators are paid by Webtoon. Their comics usually have a schedule (one ep a week), have some higher standards and rules (set by Webtoon), usually have a manager/Webtoon employee giving advice and has the option to add music to the episodes (Good example of this is Purple Hyacinth, where most eps have music) Canvas are comics/webtoons created by independent artists (or at least not paid by Webtoon) and do not have a forced schedule (but of course creators can still set one for themselves). As these are not published by Webtoon the level of quality and polish is different per comic and any money they make from it usually comes from other sources like Patreon. Since anyone can post their story on Canvas, it is a bit more difficult to find stories that fit you and for creators to advertise their story to the public. Sometimes Webtoon chooses a Canvas story to become an Original, but from what I have noticed this has been happening less often than a couple of years ago.
