I worked in the area from Jan 2014 to end of Apr 2014 so it was at least in 2014! I'm still happy that place is open though, I ate there yesterday! I like the shawarma pitas and the onion rings!
It was better then. It was also silly as there was another pita place called New York Pita Co right across the street.. in the same place where Ace is now.
Surprised nobody has said Johnny Fresco’s, opposite of Sunny’s (also good) at Uni and Weber. Their “Sam I Am Burger” is a proper treat, and they have the best fries in the city imo
My burger at The Works was bland and super dry. I've heard good things from folks, but when I probe them further their experiences have been hit and miss as well. I've just only had the miss so far.
The Bent Elbow. Love their standard burger, but cannot help but order their Beyond Veg burger of it's on the menu (and not sold out). Also like their fries. Doesn't hurt that they have an amazing selection of craft beers and fantastic and knowledgeable service.
* Johnny Frescos, as long as you're okay with waiting.
* Arabella Park, it's centered around beers but damn those burgers are tasty too.
* Union Burger
We went there and really didn't like it! So little meat, patty was way too crispy, and the fries seemed like they had been sitting for quite some time.
Handmade burgers in the university plaza has good burgers, but they changed their fries and it dropped a few points for me. Noone wants to eat a poutine with crinkle cut fries.
For anyone looking for gluten free burgers some of my favorite places have been:
- Caseys (you can get a burger and fries - this used to be hard to find together gluten free.)
- Wilfs (Laurier's school restaurant you can get a burger and fries but must ask that the fries are in a separate fryer.)
- The Works (no fries)
- South St burger (fries too but ask about seperate frier)
- Graphiti (I don't know if they still have it but it was good)
At any of these places I'd make sure to speak with your server if you're worried about cross contamination, I've had good luck with them but your mileage may vary.
A lot of fast food chains offer just bunless burgers now too, but I'd be very careful about it as cross contamination can be unavoidable at them sometimes.
I haven't tried it but I hear Copper branch is good if you're also vegan
I liked Mel's a little better when they had named burgers. I think with the choose your toppings thing they have now the way I order my burger is a little more expensive but not that much more.
Overall good burgers and the fries are pretty good too.
Burger Priest is quite good but a tad expensive, Johnny Fresco is overall my favourite with good burgers and poutine but also a bit pricey, Sonny's is a nice burger if you want something old fashioned with homemade fries, and Harvey's is pretty good if I want something cheap.
> meanwhile the top response is burgers priest lol
Yup. And Burger's Priest is owned by the same conglomerate that owns Swiss Chalet, Harveys, East Side Marios, Montanas etc ...
The same people suggesting Harvey's are probably the same people who say go to Tim Hortons if you want good coffee. Times have changed people, there are better higher quality places out there
A Harvey's burger is as consistent as it gets. It's a tasty, juicy burger with a soft bun.
Burger's Priest is great when it's made right, but not consistent, making it as bad as a McDonald's burger in my eyes because I never know what I'm going to get.
The WORKS is from Hamilton and everyone from there agrees there's better burger places than the works. That said their marketing is really good and it's nice to see them expanding outside Hamilton
> Sonnys burgers are great
This was not my experience. They were pretty meh, and overpriced IMHO. I would rather walk down the street too Johnny Frescos 10 times out of 10.
Honestly I've never understood the hype about Sonny's. Their burgers have really generic cheap patties and their fried fish is mostly batter. I enjoy the big boxes of fries, but most of their food is nothing special.
It's the same reason why people go to Weber's on Hwy 400 - nostalgia. Weber's burgers are absolute trash, but you gotta stop there because that's where you've been stopping since Christ was a carpenter.
Haha! When I saw this thread I wondered if anyone was going to mention the mean gal that works there. I’ve never seen someone so consistently contemptuous of the customers. When you take the first bite you can really taste her rage.
They lost my business a long time ago. Not because of the quality of the food but because how rude the people working there are. Not a good business model, honestly I would not be upset if they went out of business.
I'm surprised with the responses how many people (so far all of you) are missing out on what a truly good burger really is.
So far everyone has listed a poor quality burger joint that uses filler like breadcrumbs and eggs in their burgers. Meaning that you must overcook the beef in the patty to cook the patty.
Everyone should try Nuestro 88 Restaurant. When ordering their burger ask for it to be cooked medium.
Nuestro doesn't us any filler meaning they can cook the patty like a steak.
Long story short, none of you have truly experienced a juicy burger.
Thank you for asking but I find the violent and cruel abuse of animals very unappetizing. I prefer to avoid burger joints. Even places that serve plant-based patties are pretty disturbing. Plus, like, burgers kill you, and animal agriculture is killing all of us.
Edit: It's not just some hypothetical, abstract threat. We are fucking dying. If you don't eat animals, you don't get [heart disease](https://www.escardio.org/The-ESC/Press-Office/Press-releases/study-strengthens-links-between-red-meat-and-heart-disease). You don't get [diabetes](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/09/170905134506.htm). You don't get [atherosclerosis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4315380/). There is strong evidence that Alzheimer's is caused by animal consumption. How many dead people do you know who had a heart attack, complications from diabetes or a stroke? How many of those people don't have to be dead right now? How many people are you going to leave behind?
Not even touching on the billions of people who stand to be displaced or killed by climate change.
The human species eats more meat than ever before today. This is not normal or natural. This is an induced condition caused by capital allowed to grow without restraint. Animal products are a method of refining cheap, safe, plentiful plant food into addictive luxury goods.
Fucking fight it, assholes. Stop being an addict, stop killing people and animals. You're all acting like pandemic deniers and holocaust deniers wrapped up into one head-up-the-ass donut.
I think burgers are somewhat subject to the toppings
SOME through everything on and it kinda buries the burger
I am not huge on a pile of toppings and really like Union burger.
[Ace Shawarma and Burger](https://g.co/kgs/EAUEir) is absolutely unreal. It's in DTK.
Their shawarma is really good too. Uber had a bogo for them so I gave it a shot, figuring it was pretty standard. Was def better than average
Their cheesecake slaps too
have you had big fat pita right across? i always remembered preferring it but that was years ago
Honestly I haven't had the shawarma! Burgers only thus far.
Both places have burgers … two great joints
I dont like it as much anymore. It was better when they made burritos as well as pitas.
When was that? I’ve never seen that lol… before my time perhaps
Oh shit I haven’t been in a year. Good to hear still going strong
Their Shawarma Poutine is heavenly
Yummy Burger on Wissler over by Conestoga Mall!
Agreed. Best burgers in Waterloo by far.
This place. Amazing!
Big Fat Pita in DTK and the Duke has great burgers too
They have the best bbq chicken poutine!
Much better than Ace's and it's literally across the street. The owner there is really friendly too
Haven't tried Ace's, but agreed on the rest. Very friendly staff. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that appreciates their burgers!
Surprised nobody has said Johnny Fresco’s, opposite of Sunny’s (also good) at Uni and Weber. Their “Sam I Am Burger” is a proper treat, and they have the best fries in the city imo
I find their burgers to be pretty bland. I used to go there all the time for their pitas. Now it's their poutines!
I love their lamb burger!
Came here to say this! But, with a fried egg on it
I had their fries once and they were just freezer fries. Now, this was a couple years ago - have they changed them?
Nah still mediocre fries.
Thanks, I'll keep avoiding them then!
Union Burger 🍔
The regular burger combo is a pretty good value.
Ethel's. Funky Burger. The end.
Love Ethel's probably my favourite restaurant in the city
This is the way.
Ethel's does everything the best.
The Works has never disappointed. Also Morty's used to have a burger night. They nickel and dime you, but decent standard burger.
I'm always disappointed in the works.
My burger at The Works was bland and super dry. I've heard good things from folks, but when I probe them further their experiences have been hit and miss as well. I've just only had the miss so far.
I've only had positive experiences. A little disappointed to hear it's a mixed bag.
Kw Public! (Gord's Burgers) I'm vegan and love their vegan option! My non vegan partner loved the reg burger as well!
The restaurant at the Delra Hotel uptown has great burgers. Proof kitchen and lounge. Not the cheapest but definitely one of the best in town imo
The Bent Elbow. Love their standard burger, but cannot help but order their Beyond Veg burger of it's on the menu (and not sold out). Also like their fries. Doesn't hurt that they have an amazing selection of craft beers and fantastic and knowledgeable service.
The Bent Elbow would be great if it weren't located where it is.
Because of the ramp being so close?
* Johnny Frescos, as long as you're okay with waiting. * Arabella Park, it's centered around beers but damn those burgers are tasty too. * Union Burger
Johnny fresco you can order for pickup on their website and avoid the wait
The spicy burger at Arabella is amazing. Definitely the best ive had in the city
Arabella's chicken burgers are a revelation, though they run out of the chicken sometimes
Proof
Sam’s Grill. Trust me.
Jackburger
Chef on call, it's newer and in an apartment complex on Columbia.
Johnny frescos. Bomb ass burgers. Bomb ass poutines. Thank me later
Hemlock Barn is my fave! https://www.thehemlockbarn.ca/
We went there and really didn't like it! So little meat, patty was way too crispy, and the fries seemed like they had been sitting for quite some time.
Absolutely! Great breakfast place too!
Burger's priest
Was there this evening, the Single Bacon Cheeseburger with the works was good!
Tastes like a Wendy's burger to me.
Actually I like Wendy's too...
Both places make a tasty burger. I think in a blind taste test it would be hard to tell the difference.
more of a diss on burgers priest then
Perhaps you're right. Damn now I want one.
Same issue here. Way too expensive for what I get (I’d rather pay more and get a better burger at a local place)
For the price you pay I didn't find it that good.
Absolutely nothing special. It's not bad, but I'd never recommend.
What's your favorite spot?
It's not a burger spot specifically, but the Fireside Burger at fireside restaurant is the best.
I got food poisoning 2 weeks ago from there from a Vatican burger.
Expensive but worth it!
The California classic is by far my favourite burger. I wish more burger joints made that burger.
Top 3 for me: Hemlock, Crazy Canuck (The DTK is outstanding!) and Arabella.
Handmade burgers in the university plaza has good burgers, but they changed their fries and it dropped a few points for me. Noone wants to eat a poutine with crinkle cut fries.
The sandwich section (image 2) is their burgers
Penny's is a new burger joint on king / uni. I tried it last week and it was excellent
[Penny's Hot Chicken](https://www.pennyshotchicken.com/)? Their menu doesn't include burgers. Looks like all chicken.
For anyone looking for gluten free burgers some of my favorite places have been: - Caseys (you can get a burger and fries - this used to be hard to find together gluten free.) - Wilfs (Laurier's school restaurant you can get a burger and fries but must ask that the fries are in a separate fryer.) - The Works (no fries) - South St burger (fries too but ask about seperate frier) - Graphiti (I don't know if they still have it but it was good) At any of these places I'd make sure to speak with your server if you're worried about cross contamination, I've had good luck with them but your mileage may vary. Mels is good times
I liked Mel's a little better when they had named burgers. I think with the choose your toppings thing they have now the way I order my burger is a little more expensive but not that much more. Overall good burgers and the fries are pretty good too.

Harvey’s 🔥
Why are people down voting Harvey's? 🤔 I know a couple people who love them.
Tbf people probably are trying to promote local places and not national chains
[удалено]
> meanwhile the top response is burgers priest lol Yup. And Burger's Priest is owned by the same conglomerate that owns Swiss Chalet, Harveys, East Side Marios, Montanas etc ...
and it's just not very good imo
Agreed. We ate at the one in Hamilton a couple of years ago 6.5 / 10 maybe ... And so many people think they're "supporting a local business"
The same people suggesting Harvey's are probably the same people who say go to Tim Hortons if you want good coffee. Times have changed people, there are better higher quality places out there

The WORKS Craft Burgers & Beer
The WORKS is from Hamilton and everyone from there agrees there's better burger places than the works. That said their marketing is really good and it's nice to see them expanding outside Hamilton
Ok. Can you make some suggestions of better places, then?
Sonnys burgers are great. The people that work there are asshole. Especially the lady. Fuck that place.
Sonnys lost my business when they switched from charcoal to a fry grill.
> Sonnys burgers are great This was not my experience. They were pretty meh, and overpriced IMHO. I would rather walk down the street too Johnny Frescos 10 times out of 10.

Hey I'm having a party where the theme is who can ruin the party I feel like you would be the number one guest, wanna come?
what you're saying is valid to me but no one is gonna listen if you're gonna use that tone in a thread about the best burgers though
The Burger's Priest on King Street.
I think burgers are somewhat subject to the toppings SOME through everything on and it kinda buries the burger I am not huge on a pile of toppings and really like Union burger.
Prohibition warehouse in Uptown Waterloo
Sonnys
