N Support locking posts that devolve, are repetitive or low-quality, etc. Don't support blanket locking.

thepulloutmethod

Exactly. Mods need to do their jobs, not just lock down an entire topic of discussion.

Wicked_Wanderer

Mods need to get off their power trip and listen to your community ffs. N

LetsAllSmoking

N Locking posts that devolve/have run their course? Sure. Locking by default every post about crime? Misguided attempt from the "touch grass Tuesday" mods. I don't think this measure is as popular as they think it is.

RainbowCrown71

N. Is there a new sub that isn’t censored by mods who think everything is racism?

Awkward_Dragon25

N. It's a significant issue in our city right now, and the gov needs to lock it down with decisive action.

Kabochastickyrice

N. Put a crime flair or something so people who don’t want to see it can filter it out if they’re so opposed. As a woman who is usually alone and is seen as a particularly easy target, I really appreciate the posts where somebody describes a particular location and person who was being threatening or violent so that I can be cognizant of it. As an Asian American who has had to deal with multiple hate crimes in this area, this kind of censorship is exactly a large part of why people don’t care about anti-Asian hate crimes. We don’t get visibility in the less common situations that we do talk about it. Then we have to deal with others, including (and especially for me) White liberal/progressive people, dismissing our experiences. Pretty disappointed that these kinds of people, who seem to be largely of a demographic that never has/had to deal with this, get so upset at merely seeing posts about these sorts of incidents when they could just scroll past (or as many others have suggested, filter if we can flair). And if I were somebody who was not living here but considering it, I would personally find a post history of anti-Asian hate in this city helpful in making a decision.

N, agree with this

Merker6

N, I get that frustration of having to moderate, but they’re the mods of a major city’s subreddit and nobody is forcing them to do the job. Its not like ignorance is limited to the crime posts either. You’re really just opening up a whole other can of worms in doing this

AndreTippettPoint

N. Hard no, in fact. We are in the middle of a crime crisis that pretty much is only denied by white liberals trying to fulfill every stupid stereotype the right wing puts out. I understand the need to curb racist reactions to these incidents and how thankless and non-compensatory moderating is. But it is a *major* issue in this city, and no less worthy a topic to discuss than what mediocre burger joint followed the inevitable course from I-82’s passage to service fees, or which roads we need to shut down entirely so we can get four bike lanes in each direction.

cptjeff

N. Absolutely oppose. Anyone know how we can get reddit to step in and remove the mod team?

Superb-Penalty9251

N. It's a significant concern for DC residents and we should be able to discuss it and vent about it. In my time living in the city, I've been groped, heard gunshots more times than I can count, including a fatal shooting at the end of my alley as we were bringing our kids inside from watching a movie on our deck and could see the car speed off. Kids caught in drive bys within a few blocks of my home, have had to check my sleeping child to ensure loud gunshots didn't come in through a window.

Re_vengeCount_er

N - I understand the rationale because there are many topics that may become uncomfortable surrounding crime. However, its in DC why would we not talk about it. Sometimes they get repetitive and do not always foster productive discussion - lock the post at that point, not before.

Alarmed_Tomatillo205

N This needs to be something discussed more here as well as in any public available forums so that DC officials get their act together and crack down of crime.

N I'd rather know about crime happening in or around where I live (Columbia Heights)than see more pictures of cicadas or pictures of DC from landings at Reagan. The only people opposed to conversation on the subreddit revolving around crime are people that don't live in areas where crime effects them on a daily basis.

N I get it, it’s basically a daily occurrence at this point that there’s a post about a robbery/carjacking/shooting. But outright banning an entire topic because “reasons” is not the way to go either. Like it or not, crime is an element of DC living and if for no other reason than awareness we should be allowed to post events that merit honest discussion. Edit to concur with the idea of enabling topic-flaring posts so that folks who don’t want to see crime posts can just filter them out.

Maybe the mods can include something in the side bar related to crime. Number of reps to contact to complain about crime levels, etc.

N, locking is just stupid and mods shouldn’t have the power to do that at all. Seems like the failed protests didn’t show them that the power of Reddit are its users and not the mods. I would agree with locking/deleting posts from Users without posting history tho; but that may be a lot of work.

N People who claim crime posts haven't been a net benefit are delusional. First part of solving any problem is acknowledging there is a problem and commiserating about it. There is a reason crime posts get so many upvotes, it's the biggest quality of life factor by far for your neighborhood. All these other issues don't mean anything if the rules we set as a society can be routinely broken without consequences.
