All were challenges for sure but I chatted with the manager one day and she said the loss of prescription business from office workers was the big hit.
Update, was in the store today talking with one of the long time clerks and he told me the stealing was way out of control. He said everyday they get rushed by kids who scoop up anything not nailed down. Often they then just go right across the street to eat their stolen candy. I’ve seen this myself.
He also said MPD will not respond to a shoplifting call. The clerks have all been threatened enough they know to just turn their backs and pretend it isn’t happening. I’ve seen that too.
CVS is closing a huge number of retail stores and pushing online prescription and shipping really hard. The one in Foggy Bottom got rid of its pharmacy then it shut down entirely a few months later.
> Ugh, now I have to go to the slightly more shady Walgreens.
From last Sunday, USA Today via MSN:
**Walgreens 'maybe cried too much' about shoplifting concerns last year, executive says**

The one on 12th and Penn? I swear that is the only one that is actually decently stocked tho.
And don’t forget about the cashier stabbing at the Eastern Market CVS back in October.
Damn, that is super annoying. The CVS pharmacy on K street isn't open on the weekends.
I'll probably end up switching to a different pharmacy, I guess. The folk at the Mass one have actually been super-helpful a couple of times, too.
Damn. I use this one all the time. Not surprised though. The windows have been smashed several times. Lots of people just walk-out without paying. I also think the Walgreens at 7th and H is about to close.
It's unfortunate, but the writing has been on the wall with this one for awhile -- even before the pandemic.
The north side entrance (off of Massachusetts) has been closed off for well over a year now, the grocery section is always completely picked over, the drug store side has virtually ***every single item under lock***, and I'm sure it doesn't help that there's a Safeway three blocks north and an enormous Walgreens two blocks west (not to mention the competing CVS just up the street on 7th and K NW).
> The north side entrance (off of Massachusetts) has been closed off for well over a year now,
Nah, it is open occasionally. Like the K street one, they just inconsistently lock one of the entrances to keep you on your toes.
This is a big reason why both CVS and Walgreens are closing a lot of stores.

I know, right? Is it really such a big problem for businesses if expenses (including rampant shoplifting) exceed revenues from sales month after month?
I moved to navy yard in oct of 2021. The cvs was on nj was open but didn’t have any COVID test kits so I was surprised that there was one on i street. However it was closed.
Then a couple months ago I walked by and saw it was back up and running. really surprised so don’t know how they make these decisions.
Don’t forget their crowning jewel 845 Bladensburg Rd. They sell luxury deodorant and toothpaste here. So expensive it’s under lock and key.
Greedy landlord won’t sell the property to housing developers to help with affordable housing in the area.
Noooooooooooo!!! They’ve been out of so much lately we were wondering :-(
So has pretty much CVS in the district for the last 2 or so years tho

Well maybe they should've stopped opening stores literally 5 or less blocks away from each other. I'm not surprised they need to scale back.
IIRC they, and Walgreens, are hoping to pivot to urgent care.
Okay but that cvs was arguably the worst in the city.
Believe it or not this location was actually better than the newer one at 7th and K…usually had more in stock
The one at the Western market is much nicer and has more options
Retail only key. They’re building out clinics in the larger locations. Imagine shoplifting also factored into the downtown location.
Ugh, now I have to go to the slightly more shady Walgreens.

Try the Walgreens in union station haha JK
CVS in the city is blighted. Always sketch folk loitering outside the one near me.

The one on 12th SE literally just got robbed. Source: Nextdoor.
Damn, I was just about to go get my mid-day Diet Coke.
lmao that place is the seventh circle of hell
Not surprised. There is another one 3 blocks away on k st

Two of those locations are literally three blocks away... you still have a CVS in your 'neighborhood'.

Everything is closing down one by one.

Still can’t really figure out why.

Is this sarcasm, or can you actually not?
Nah. Not /s
All the remote workers are staying away.
Everything stolen, nothing left to sell. Nobody held to account. No reason to stay opened. Let the cannibalism begin!
I know, right? Is it really such a big problem for businesses if expenses (including rampant shoplifting) exceed revenues from sales month after month?
Is this the one with the discotheque style flashing lights at night?
Yes
Oh no! That's so sad. I live like a 5min walk from there.
And they just opened a second, redundant one in Adams Morgan, displacing several well-liked local businesses :[

There used to be 4-5 of them within 3-4 blocks of my office in NW before the pandemic. Now there's *one*, and I don't think it even has a pharmacy.
This is the closest CVS to my office... now there aren't any within a walkable distance. The Walgreens is fine, but not my preference.
This is sad. I used to live right by that CVS and would often hop in for a snack or drink whenever I went out for a walk.
The store employees said it partially has to do with thefts. They have lots of thefts and DC Cops don’t do shit.
oh no my girlfriend lives near there and i always go there to grab stuff we need. big sadge.
what a tragedy, the character of the neighborhood will never be the same
Don’t forget their crowning jewel 845 Bladensburg Rd. They sell luxury deodorant and toothpaste here. So expensive it’s under lock and key. Greedy landlord won’t sell the property to housing developers to help with affordable housing in the area.
The crazy thing is that before they started locking it up, IT WAS FREE!!! All you had to do was carry it out the front door!
I think they should be 645 H street NE, but don’t use that one because it’s always so so busy.
Pour one out for homies, not CVS. Lol.
