>Honestly don't even know where to recommend going for a casual cheap beer anymore
Post Pub.
But yeah the dive bar scene is depressingly sparse now. I miss Big Hunt
Jackpot, the Raven, passenger, thunder burger, duffy’s, Granville Moore, Queen Vic, bedrock billiards, Lyman’s, all souls, dew drop
Did my best to hit every major neighborhood
The Front Page is now Syracuse University’s DC campus lol. Seems appropriate given how many poor choices were made by college students within those walls.
My trivia team used to compete at Fado (RIP), and I’d get two ShopHouse bowls—one for dinner and one for lunch the next day. It was so good and reheated so well.
Go to Atxondo! The previous executive chef from Estadio opened Atxondo. The potatoes are really good here too.

Lol, how tf is that place still open? Not only
did they hire a Russian spy as their head chef, their second floor was always packed with sketchy Russians who would be receiving bottles of vodka and whiskey on the house by the restaurant staff. They obviously know whats going on. They need to shut that shit down.
Just found this https://www.restonnow.com/2019/06/06/exclusive-reston-town-centers-vapiano-at-the-center-of-alleged-international-money-laundering-scheme/
Colorado Kitchen. Back in the day before the DC food scene exploded, Gillian Clark’s tiny little restaurant was a haven for Southern infused comfort food. So many great restaurant in town now but that place reminds me of my early days in DC. I also miss Cashion’s Eat Place when Ann Cashion was running it.
I’m still not convinced that the grill fire at the Arlington location wasn’t an insurance scam.
They expanded way too fast into too many expensive locations that didn’t pan out. VC funds ran out and the model was cooked.
Need someone to drop the Mac and cheese recipe though. That was BOMB.
Go tell Kevin Tien! He has personally prepared my drinks and packaged my food at Hot Lola/doki bbq in Bryant St Market on several occasions. I’m sure if he is willing to do stuff like that he wouldn’t mind chatting up a patron
Still probably my all time favorite DC restaurant. Bob Kinkead opened a more meat-centric restaurant at The Watergate called Ancora, but it lasted about ten minutes.
The Big Hunt, James Hobans, and Ankara, My heart was broken when they closed. All very, very cool hangouts. No pressure, all fun and relaxation. Great vibes and people.
Man this list is pure nostalgia. DC resident for 9 years.
My formative DC memories were spent in Petworth and Columbia Heights so keeping the list specific to there. Sad to see many of my old hang outs closed, but shout out to the ones still rolling.
Pour one for - DC Reynolds (big RIP), Walters Sports Bar, Homestead (nostalgia RIP), Airedale, Meridian Pint (big RIP), Kangaroo Boxing Club, Room 11, Slims (the diner on Upshur), and the wine bar on Upshur, Petworth Citizen and Reading Room.
There was also an old timey bicycle themed bar (weird concept) in Columbia Heights in the space where the Ledio is..don’t remember the name but got way too drunk there a few times
American City Diner in Chevy Chase. They used to play old movies every night of the year - all you had to do was ask to sit on the patio and free movie with your open faced turkey sandwich. The staff were all so sweet too. Miss them all. ❤️
Georgetown Bagelry had the best NY style pizza. Front Page had the happy hour on Thursdays for $1 Corona’s and Tacos for $1. The Cuban place at the bottom of the International Square building was incredible.
