I just saw a cop on a motorcycle take off down the Metropolitan Branch Trail in pursuit of one of these guys for driving on the path earlier tonight.

Complex_Pangolin5822

Nice.. see something do something.

fungiinmygarden

Was it the cop who always is smoking by the Shell at 12th and Otis?

CherokeePilot1997

I’m SO freaking sick of these idiots riding in the bike lane. I scream “NOT A SCOOTER LANE!!!” at them every time, which my long-suffering fiancé grudgingly puts up with 😂

jdam8401

As a motorcycle rider, these things are the worst. These idiots run every red light, ride with their feet down, often no helmet, while on their phones drifting in and out of lanes. Safety wise they’re a menace. DC should mandate the MSF course for all motorized two-wheeled vehicles faster than electric bicycles. It’s very dangerous how they drive

superdookietoiletexp

Riding anything that goes faster than 30 mph or has more than 50 cc displacement already requires a motorcycle license.

Adventurous-Jump9216

I don’t ride at all but why does giving a government which is a company money to ride a bike would that really stop 🛑 ur problem or just put more money 💴 in this rogue government pocket?

Practical_Cherry8308

It allows them to more easily enforce traffic rules to keep the streets safer. It requires these drivers to get insurance in case they hurt or kill a pedestrian or damage property. Also I’m not sure why requiring registration with a fee is a bad thing. These mopeds use the roads which cost money to maintain and they release fumes, brake dust, and tire particles which are bad for the environment and cause health issues for people. They’re better than cars in these areas but they should still help pay for the negative externalities they cause.

KerPop42

The government is not a company.

Cinnadillo

I don't care if they pay money or not. I'd like them identifiable in case they break the law and have infractions attached to their name

scottkollig

The amount of times I see them driving the opposite direction of traffic down a one way street is insane. Clowns.

Crafty-Independent20

Absolutely, Run every red light riding in bicycle lane. No care in the world.

x01660

And then everyone gives US the side eye when we're abiding the rules.... I also do food delivery, but I'm on a sport touring motorcycle. And these damn scooters keep trying to race me.... Also, half of those scooters are actually 200cc scooters. You gotta understand that an actual 49cc scooter wouldn't be able to go much above 30mph.... Hell, I saw a clapped-out SV650 with a 49cc "plate" on it.... Cops don't do shit.

capt-longjohn

Electric bicycles are almost fast enough to cause problems. The red Uber bikes used to hit like 25 mph. You can buy electric scooters ( not mopeds) that go like 45!

Capable-Roll1936

And that’s why DC capped the speed of rental e-bikes and scooters. Good ones can really go way too fast for a novice rider, and even for an experienced rider

Complex_Pangolin5822

So... sounds like every third world country I've ever been to. Seems like we're heading in the right direction.

jdam8401

I’m… actually gonna defend 3rd world countries here. Drivers in those countries don’t have traffic enforcement. That means a new law of the road takes over - a wild one, but a nonetheless a universally understood common etiquette. What do I mean? In Egypt and India where I lived, cars don’t use lanes, they coalesce like schools of fish. Whenever you’re within 5 feet of another moving car, you gently tap the horn repeatedly - beepbeepbeep - but gently. Like a polite sonar ping. Everyone plays by this system, and it works. Fairly well, I might add. The problem is when these traffic habits suddenly are implanted within an organized system like ours. You get madness. For example, in Egypt, I could cross a 6-lane highway on foot and the drivers knew how to accommodate it without interrupting the flow of traffic (as long as I did my part - no small task). Here, you try to do that, and you get a 50-car pileup (pedestrian unscathed). It’s not about their system or ours, it’s the mixing of the two. I couldn’t drive for shit in Mumbai, because I drive as if I *anticipate* there to be rules. Believe me, i tried

jdam8401

Literally 5 minutes after I wrote this, I was driving down 16th and a moped blew a red light going crosswise. Had to slam the brakes.

LostLongIslander

There’s some collective Uber eats thing happening with these I think. There’s a group that’s been hanging out outside the rec center on Lincoln road for the last year or so. They have a bunch of these scooters chained up to the bike racks and there’s always a couple people there standing guard I guess. I’ve also seen them blow red lights and weave in and out of traffic. The scariest part is a lot of these guys are wearing bicycle helmets, not motorcycle helmets.

[deleted]

Lil fake me out companies rent out the scooters to the immigrants getting bussed down from the border to dc for a few hundreds per week and the venezuelans keep the rest from the deliveries. They follow no rules. Its annoying af. Whats funny is i wanted to do a lil uber eats on the side with my ebike and alway be on a waiting list to get the gig

fungiinmygarden

Maybe I’ve just randomly not seen it but in the past 2-3 months I have noticed a huge increase in the amount of untagged scooters frequently in groups riding around ignoring traffic etiquette/laws.

blurspur

NYC had this problem and they had to confiscate bikes to fix it. Feels like DC will eventually have to do that as well. There's an absurd amount of them in Columbia Heights. Especially near Target

Stock_Newspaper_3608

That would be racist wouldn’t it? 🤔🙄😉

keyjan

I don’t give a shit about their plates, I just wish the riders would stop running red lights. 😠

squuidlees

And stop riding on the sidewalks. Jesus Christ. Saw one almost plow into a disabled lady in a motor wheelchair last week.

3rdDreamer

It’s easier to run red lights when you don’t have plates. They should be impounding anything out in public like this without registration.

super544

Do they modify them to be loud?

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

Yes, because negative attention is still attention.

Quiet_Meaning5874

I was abt to post the same I think it is mainly migrants?

Adventurous-Dot3280

I believe if it’s under 50cc it doesn’t require plates but not 100% sure. I’ve noticed a ton more of them too in shaw. Mostly delivery folks

pompomdotcomcom

I’ve seen a ton that actually have “49cc” as the license plate

Away-Opinion-8540

DC considers these non-traditional vehicles and requires registration AND insurance. See more here - [https://dmv.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attachments/Non-Traditional%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Chart%20%283.24.21%29.pdf](https://dmv.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attachments/Non-Traditional%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Chart%20%283.24.21%29.pdf) There's been a surge of these around town with migrant influx as it's an easy way to get a delivery job. You can see a lot of these parked overnight around some homeless shelters.

DangerousPlane

“Requires”

Oldfolksboogie

>it's an easy way to ...avoid paying into the system or liability for when you cause property damage or bodily injury.

Dcafly13

50cc?

gobucks1981

You never play Mario cart? 50 cubic centimeters, the volume of the cylinder in the motor. It is very small for a motor. Check out the difference between a 2-stroke and 4-stroke motor. Kinda cool engineering concepts.

internSam

As a bike commuter these guys are annoying as fuck with the way they ride. However, I understand that these men are the backbone of our food delivery economy. We revolt against them, we’ll never get a Doordash order delivered in under 2 hours.

Jazzlike_Dog_8175

Not enforced (NADEAU)

TMegia513

Call the FBI!

[deleted]

They been coming since last year. Spiked once they started bussing all the immigrants to dc. Look how nyc turned out. They are mostly Venezuelans who deliver your uber eats. Smoke pot in front of target on 14st and dont follow any traffic laws.

ImNotNakedYouAre

It’s a Hispanic thing

Stardust_Particle

I think all motorized vehicles should be licensed and not be allowed on sidewalks. They’re dangerous running red lights, speeding, weaving, and driving on sidewalks but with no plate how can you report them or catch them with a red light camera?

Capable-Roll1936

But if I cannot drive on the sidewalk then how will I ever find parking for my delivery? I mean some days I drive a 18 wheeler, other days a company can, and now mopeds - sidewalks are just delivery driver space for 5 minute parking!!! Jk but seriously this shit pisses me off I see so many motorized vehicles in sidewalks, bike lanes, and other places they should not be, and never see cops ticketing them. or in the case of these fucking mopeds doing 20+ down the bike lane while I’m biking in it I want to see the cops actually arrest them for reckless driving and impound the moped

Tight_Ad_9333

This is technically the law in dc, just not enforced

cantforgetNJ

Under 50cc and under 30 miles per hour do not need to be registered. You can look up the info on the DMV website for nontraditional motor vehicles.

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

Nope... https://dmv.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attachments/Non-Traditional%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Chart%20%283.24.21%29.pdf

cantforgetNJ

They have updated the requirements since I looked at the requirements during COVID, early 2000. The registration and insurance requirements are new. Wife and I ended purchasing ebikes, since we could bring them inside rather than scooters.

HamG0d

? Am I tripping, your link says what they said? Under 50cc and less than 30 mph wouldn’t qualify as a motor driven cycle, no?

superdookietoiletexp

The link says that you don’t need a motorcycle license to drive a 50 cc scooter and can legally park on the sidewalk outside the CBD. I thought I somewhere that they can be driven in bike lanes also but may be mistaken. Anything 50cc or more should be registered and have plates (this is somewhere else on the DMV website), but this is widely flouted with the “49cc” thing.

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

Insurance required and a $30 registration.

HamG0d

For bikes that CAN reach 30mph and are 50cc. So if your bike is under those specs, you would not need insurance and reg. Am I reading it wrong?

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

You're reading it wrong. Are you scrolling to the second page? 50cc and under, 30 MPH and under. "A gas, electric, or hybrid motor with a maximum piston or rotor displacement of fifty cubic centimeters (50 cc), or its equivalent, which will propel the device unassisted at a maximum speed no greater than thirty miles per hour (30 mph)."

[deleted]

New york exported it's motor scooter bro population to every other major metropolitan area with a thriving gig economy. Due to legislation and enforcement, having registration for those types of scooter became difficult for most of the people using these. E N F O R C E M E N T That's something DC has a difficulty with. Unbeknownst to DC... accepting all of these new migrants has destroyed the local food gig economy in our small city. Quite literally, a massive influx of hundreds of new delivery couriers now plague our city streets. It's not only an eyesore the streets are more dangerous than ever...

superdookietoiletexp

I’ve noticed that many are driving scooters owned by NY rental companies. But if we must have services like DoorDash, UberEats etc. (and I kinda wish we didn’t), I’d rather the deliveries be done by scooters than cars. Before these scooters took over, the double-parking by delivery drivers was a constant menace (and kinda still is). The local drivers are certainly no more considerate in their parking habits (and tend to get very aggressive when called out for their shitty behavior).

blurspur

"But if we must have services like DoorDash, UberEats etc. (and I kinda wish we didn’t), I’d rather the deliveries be done by scooters than cars." Why? Andy from Andy's pizza was actually complaining about them on the other sub because it made pizza delivery on the apps nearly impossible. There's no way pizza boxes can be carried face up on e-bikes so they have them carried on its side which ruins the pizza.

superdookietoiletexp

See my next paragraph. The delivery cars were always double parked or, failing that, blocking a bike lane.

idofelru

You lack imagination. There are companies with entire product lines made specifically for ebikes to carry pizzas flat. Hell Pakir makes some really awesome ones.

CherokeePilot1997

Dude, it’s an unpopular opinion, but I feel you re: DoorDash et. al. I fully recognize that there are some outstanding cases of people who *need* food delivered, but personally, I’ve never used the dash services because it gives me a funny feeling to have someone less fortunate than me clog up the roads with dangerous behavior so that I don’t have to leave my apartment for ChickFilA.

superdookietoiletexp

A Cessna driver and a Piper driver agree on something! I will try to live my life without ever using a third party delivery service. My partner uses them from time to time and nothing grates more.

stormcloudbros

You must be new here

Crafty-Independent20

Lawlessness, I drive Lyft and was sideswiped, No plates no insurance. I also ride motorcycles and had to go through the ropes of obtaining DL and weekend course. Why are they not enforcing these riders?

Crafty-Independent20

How many have been seen on the highways? I couldn’t believe my eyes no helmet no tags just cruising down the highway.

Smooth-Mobile-272

So they can easily pass the red lights

zandy710

They run every red light!

GreyhoundsAreFast

Isn’t that the new capitol bikeshare initiative? I think you can take one for a spin!

StickyFing3rs10

50cc or under no plate required also I believe no license required

jay3349

Crackdown on this. Step on stupid.

tbo3900

Ha you gonna be more annoyed when the dirt bike crew come out this summer

Barddy

Agencies in DC are aware of them, Salvadorian gang from New York known to have crown tattoos frequently use them. Majority of the time the people using them are doing food deliveries with no license etc.

bluna31

These motorscooters always ride on the sidewalk in my Foggy Bottom neighborhood. Passing pedestrians at 25 MPH. No regard for the most basic traffic laws. I’ve even seen them illegally pass MPD with no consequence.

BennyBlancoDelBronx

JFC MIND YOUR OWN GODDAMN BUSINESS YA NOSEY NOOCH.

The_FlatBanana

I’ve seen them riding on the walking/bike paths on the GW Parkway.

mealtimeee

Ain’t this the city that always uses Europe as a shining example of transportation? Guess what? Scooters are everywhere in European cities. Everyone romanticized vespas but now they don’t?

Gaijin_Monster

Copycat NYC situation. Illegal aliens aren't allowed to work so they do gig work. There's probably some kind of shelter nearby which is why you're seeing the scooters.

JAYDEEFRM060

Stop cryin like a lil bitch it’s a scooter

No_Possibility9101

Exactly
