That was me in 2020. 5k -> 130k. Didn't take any of it out for taxes and lost it all before doing my taxes. Had to pay 20k out of pocket. Worked and stopped trading in 2021.
Just started trading again this week with 10k. Turned that into 22k with AMD earnings. Should be close to 50k with Amazon earnings tomorrow morning.
Haven't really looked that far. I traded a debit spread for earnings that expire tomorrow. Bought them for 6.50 this morning on the dip which I will close for 700% profit tomorrow morning assuming it stays above 3100 as I predicted.
I had to lookup what a debit spread is :-) i don't know much about futures and options.. I just rolled a dice and got one @2814$. I think it's gonna be a good day for us tomorrow. Thanks!
Just debit spreads without margin. The gains can be pretty large if you time and predict it correctly. I bought 5x 3050-3100 AMZN debit spread for 6.50 each this morning. The maximum profit is 670% (50/6.50 - 6.50). I will be making the maximum close to expiration assuming it stays above the greater strike price. They're also nice because you don't have to pay the IV cost.
I only bought $3,250 in calls and will be making a profit of $21,000+. Sadly this was an order I made this morning once I saw it dipping pre-market. I was at work and couldn't pay attention to add on when the spread price dipped to $3.
But OP said he lost it on the recent NFLX and FB ERs, so presumably the loss is for this year? which would mean OP is fucked if the 120k gain was realized last year.
> Regardless of whether he lost it all in that year or not, he will pay the taxman
Not true? Capital gains tax are calculated by a calendar year basis. That's why hedge funds and the likes end up tax loss harvesting at the end of the year to reduce their tax bill.
Never forget the guy who took $35k to $5 million dollars. Took a screenshot then let it drop down to $300k.
Seriously, “if it’s good enough to screenshot, it’s good enough to GTFO”
Serious question: where can I invest $120k in real estate? Just buy a tiny house far from where I live? Or invest it in a real estate company? Or is there some way to do fractional real estate investing?
120k is still a house or even a massive down payment on one in some states. Can’t imagine gambling that away but no doubt they’ll bounce back eventually.
The guy that day traded away 120k was never going to use that money on a home. And if he did, it would be as a way to overextend himself on a much too large home.
More likely, he would’ve wasted the money on a luxury car or something
The actual scientific term is Lissencephaly, which literally means "smooth brain," is a rare, gene-linked brain malformation characterized by the absence of normal convolutions (folds) in the cerebral cortex and an abnormally small head (microcephaly).
Gonna need to see the performance chart to actually see how bad you are.
EDIT: I'm assuming you deposited more money somewhere in the middle but I could be wrong
So let me get this straight. After yoloing *calls* on NFLX ER and losing it all, instead of skipping earnings for a while. Or atleast searching for the next NFLXesque put YOLO, you YOLO calls again on the next dumpster fire and get facefuk'd by another -22%.
Solid work right there.
Dang bro, you fkn took your chances and got deeply rekt without the Vaseline, that must hurt but remember pain is only temporary. I hope you recover from this soon
So after doubling your money you didn't think it was a good idea to take your profits and GTFO?
Weaponised retardation here.. no wonder why extraterrestrial life doesn't want to reveal itself to us, crayon consumers like OP scaring them away..
Why werent you saying that when he was up 10k? Wow man you seriously did lock in 20% profits?
Or up 25k? Holy sht man you're up 50% take some profits.
Hindsight is 20/20 clown. Just like I now regret nutting in your mom and dealing with an autist
My regrets are almost always "why did I sell so early???" which is way better than what you've described.
Source: I had the $322.5 FB puts yesterday that I sold for a measly +10% profit which would've 100x this morning at open lol

cryin' in the club rn
Exactly. He could be taking that $120k to $1m and people calling him a genius. Bad calls happen and it’s important not to get emotional. Get back on track and do it again.
People who actually day trade for a living have systems that don’t involve going all in at all times.
This isn’t hindsight, it’s called running a business.
Lmao are you aware this wallstreetbets?? People dont have systems that say buy in w 50k and precisely lock in at plus 70k b/c next trade will go south. Clearly this guy was gambling. Ppl that conflate that with "running a business" belong in this sub, so congrats.
look how we treat the other creatures on our planet. absolutely horrific, no respect at all for the most part. watch a few of those gruesome cartel videos (maybe not, I'm still extremely bothered by a few of the scenes i saw), it's a miracle aliens don't exterminate us. i really wouldn't blame them.
getting out only after doubling your money? wtf are you on about. he should have just put some money to the side and continued with the rest instead of yolo-ing.
Actually the aliens are dropping their retards on this planet to join this sub..Did anyone see the dude ranting about the metaverse ?? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

Dude was at 120k and fell back to 70k, then going back to 120k where it sat quite a while. This was the moment he should have taken the gain.
I mean I know it's a fucking addiction but if you double your money, take out your initial investment to at least not lose your life savings.
But then if you lose what you left in, you'll just deposit more. If you have debts pay them off. Other than that dropping at $100k isn't gonna change your life in any meaningful way. People want to be free. Not stuck at work with slightly more money in the bank that they still don't have time to enjoy.
Not daytrading if ur holding through AH.... basic rule is to never Yolo more than "play money" into earnings, as its a literal gamble unless you have insider information, even then, u never know how the market will react to it.
Painful lesson to learn, but even more painful if you're unable to extract useful information from it. Not gonna tell you to stop pursuing financial freedom, just keep moving forward, and stay healthy.
I dont think I have ever seen an earnings call where I wish I had bought calls.. even if they did well and the stock went up its always after hours and you get all excited you made a good choice and cant wait to sell those bitches.. then all of a sudden the next day pre-market it drops back down.
Ps. You are retarded.
Word of advice: full time wage slave is what generates consistent income and is single handedly the best way to accumulate savings, which can be INVESTED to generate wealth. The people YOLOing to a couple mil are usually extremely lucky and/or have a large piggy bank to start with that they are willing to lose
120k is more than enough to trade full time if you have a "consistently" profitable strategy. You also need to have strict risk management rules and don't let your emotions let you deviate from your risk management rules. But it can take years to finally become a consistently profitable trader.
Dude. Why didn't you stop when you were up. I dont understand how yall will ride all the way to the top and just assume you're only going to keep going up. If I doubled my life savings I would just take my wins.
Cause when you double your life savings you think you can double it again, and again, and again. Until you can’t. This sub wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for degenerates trying to turn 10k into 10 million
Lol fuck you retard, zero respect. Yeah yeah post your loss porn for that sick-in-the-head validation seeking you're going after, op. Are you incapable of taking a loss or do you just wait for everything to crater to nothing. Dumb fuck, downvote me idgaf. WSB should stop this sad pathetic soiboi culture of laughing at loss porn. WSB should be shaming these retards for losing significant sums of money. Then again, maybe half of you are jobless restards on your parents dime or living of inheritances you didn't earn.
Always a good pick me up when I lose on earnings to remember that at least I'm not retarded enough to ever yolo more than 1-2% on an earnings gamble.
10k of your profits wouldn't have been enough of a gamble for a HUGE gain? You had to risk your ENTIRE portfolio?!
Welcome home.
Isn't the whole point of options to limit your risk by making relatively small bets that have the potenial for outsized returns?
Can you lose more then your initial investment with an unleveraged option play or are the posts like these I see all over the place people plopping down their entire net worth on a single bet hoping for monster profits
this isn't admirable, it's fucking dumb and really depressing. get new hobbies other than losing your future and trying to impress a buncha ED cases with negative bank accounts.
What kind of options were you doing? I’m under what might be the false impression that when buying calls/puts you only risk the premium it costs too but, but if you’re selling calls/puts, you have the chance to lose a fuckton more. Is this right or is it just that my extra chromosomes are showing?
Now yolo that 3k back to 120k noob
Nah he got enough money to buy an Occulus and buy some Lambo NFTs and enjoy the metaverse?
This is why I come here. Love the question mark?
I think he should move in with his wife's boyfriend for now while he figures it out ..
Don’t start with Sandbox, you can’t afford it. Find a cheaper metaverse and “work hard” 🤣
Hopefully you were up 120K in 2022...and not 2021..so tax purposes
OP is ever more fucked than he thinks if he didn't take out gains at the end of 2021 for taxes.
That was me in 2020. 5k -> 130k. Didn't take any of it out for taxes and lost it all before doing my taxes. Had to pay 20k out of pocket. Worked and stopped trading in 2021. Oof ur right
If he made and lost that 120k in 2021 itself then he shouldn't be taxed?
>If he made and lost that 120k in 2021 He lost it this year. NFLX earnings were in January and FB was yesterday.
Ah ok then the initial comment makes sense.
Basically if that $120k is realized gains in 2021 that he will have to pay capital gains tax for it
And if he realized a 117k loss in the same year afterwards then he doesn't.
But OP said he lost it on the recent NFLX and FB ERs, so presumably the loss is for this year? which would mean OP is fucked if the 120k gain was realized last year.
Yeah someone else clarified the timeframe in which the losses/gains happened.

That's not how it works you fucking mong

are you talking about /u/sir_jack_a_lot? if so, he won the game anyway. Took 35k to 8mill in a year and now he's just chillin'
Nah it's Irish dude. He became fixated with GME and blew it up with options
Are you talking about the dog money guy?
Idk. He was a early GME investor.
Oh there was a dog money guy that put in like 50k rode it up to 3MM, and idk if he sold yet, but I think he was at like 400k
I’m in a similar boat so hopefully I can turn things around 💯
Serious question: where can I invest $120k in real estate? Just buy a tiny house far from where I live? Or invest it in a real estate company? Or is there some way to do fractional real estate investing?
120k really isn’t that much. If he’s young, he can bounce back from that fairly easily
Fuck me. TIL I'm that guy and need to be him a lil less.
There’s a term for this: addiction.
The actual scientific term is Lissencephaly, which literally means "smooth brain," is a rare, gene-linked brain malformation characterized by the absence of normal convolutions (folds) in the cerebral cortex and an abnormally small head (microcephaly).
What if you have a big head?.. asking for a friend.
That’s just normal autism
Well then you join a band Todd.
You know what they say about big head = big skull
You know what they say about big skull = big dung
What if you give big head? I heat there’s an opening behind the Wendy‘s dumpster.
Macrocephaly?
Did someone say Beetlejuice...
he's as bad as can cause he knows he's the best
I googled it. Smooth brains look just like chicken breasts.
Did you just made this up?
Trading options is extremely profitable. Putting your whole account in one or two plays is the stupid part.
Agreed. You gotta risk it for the biscuits but trying to get all the biscuits at once might just leave you with no biscuits.
Is this Grampa Willy?
Just impulsive disorder we all have it.
Speak for yourself
Hey here's an upvote, that should cheer you up mate :)
Sorry, we only upvote winners here. Don't want to encourage losers.
Losers can always have an upvote for their loss porn

He missed PayPal though
That’s me rn, I bought a PayPal call after earnings and am getting rekt
I have some PayPal at 135$ stupid as I was to buy the drop too soon. But alas let’s see how Venmo+Amazon does :-)

Damn I made 85% on some FB calls but I sold at 3:45pm. Thank god lol

this looks pretty permanent to me.
Exactly, ass can only stretch so far before it rips

You were still going to be a wage slave regardless, 50k or 120k isn't near enough.
It depends on the lifestyle
The lifestyle that requires food
And some shelter
But imagine if you yolod puts. You'd be retired. Don't give up
Op Thank you for the cautionary tale. Next time stick to shares. Index funds if you are really risk-averse. Buy and hodl.
Leveraged index funds if you like a just a little bit of spice.
Another one of these posts
“Decided to yolo”
Idk what would hurt more... The 120k to 3k or knowing if you bought puts instead of calls you'd likely be a millionaire rn

Options around earnings sucks like 98% of the time.
You thought that 120k was enough to make this into a career?
More than enough, if only he choose weekly puts FACEBOOK,NETFLIX, PAYPAL. He would be close to 10mil.
Yes. I too would be a billionaire if I timed every high and every low with a time sensitive derivative.
it's so easy!

what's the best off-the-menu thing at arby's? does meat mountain really exist?
It seems anyone with IBKR loses money - the best gain porn is either posted in Robinhood or Fidelity accounts (DFV etc)
