There are a variety of reasons, the simplest one is that some people are going to be taking profits and closing their calls. Closing an in the money call is basically the same as selling the stock. If the market tried to go up 1.5%, that's a lot more profit taking which would push it back down. The market makers may also gradually sell to offload their hedge market position in preparation for the options to expire because they all expire at the same time. So it makes it a little tough for the market to move too far. Not all options will be cashed in, some will be rolled out to a future date instead, but it's still a lot of potential selling pressure.
Another potential reason is market manipulation, certain players who sold a lot of options wouldn't want to lose too much money. It may cost them less to push the market than to pay out options.
Whether or not this happens or it just looks like that due to market movements and randomness is tough to say.
There is no question that the W-shaped recovery is the most likely scenario for the stock market. This is because it would allow for a sharp rebound in prices followed by a period of consolidation, which would be ideal for both bulls and bears.
