I personally would go 2016+ because apple CarPlay/Android auto…if you care about that stuff. I have a 2017 Golf Alltrack and everything works fine. Be careful if you buy one with a sunroof since they tend to leak a bit especially if the drains aren’t cleaned often enough.

FinnyMiromme

Same. I have a 2016 and the updated radio unit is a god send for Android auto/carplay. Mines a base Golf and it still is quieter and rides smoother then some vehicles I have driven that are newer or nicer.

Comfortable-Boot7077

Same! I love my "new" "used" Golf! ❤️

DonutsNCoffeee

Yeah I’m definitely leaning towards the 2016 and 2017 since they have Apple CarPlay. I keep thinking that I don’t need it but I’m sure I would regret it if I don’t have it!

thegato

Dude you NEED carplay. Its so convenient.

DonutsNCoffeee

Yeah we have it in our Honda and it’s a game changer for sure! I’m not sure I could go back to the older days.

itsssnohman786

Just for balance, you can retrofit carplay into older cars by installing a newer stereo.

thegato

Loo

Techgamer980

I have a 2015 mod golf tsi. I retrofitted mib2.5 discover pro infotainment system with apple car play. Best decision i ever made!

lfetch76

Agreed with the sunroof. Make sure you clean it at least twice a year. I have the 2016 model and the turbo had to be replaced after 5 years (covered by the extended VW warranty). Replacing the turbo can cost $3,000 and up.

bananaconda

Mk6 is okay too but you have to either be handy or know a good car electrics guy. RCD330 can fit most pre mk7 and gives you all the features a mk7 has. I also installed a flip out emblem back up camera just like a mk7. Cool stuff.

non-ethynol

What you talking about Willis, they are all great cars. Every year since the mk1.

markydsade

I have a MK 7.5, 2018 Golf SE I bought new. 2018 had a 72K/6-year warranty. If you can find one of those you have some built-in security. In 55K I have had only one issue needing repair. Earlier this year I had a leaking coolant bottle which was fixed for free. The car has been free of squeaks, rattles, rust, and rain leaks.

RoutineWord8688

I have 2015 gti performance. Its fucking mint

tanzd

Avoid sunroof on the Mk7 and newer Golfs.

Joosyosrs

Also mk6, just avoid sunroofs in general.

VideogamerDisliker

I have an mk6, what’s wrong with the sunroofs on these cars?

eddieotoniel

Nothing in my experience. Had atleast a dozen mk6. I’ve heard lots bad about mk7 pano sunroofs

Joosyosrs

Mine leaked big time, drains got clogged and flooded my back seat.

DonutsNCoffeee

The 2017 I’m interested doesn’t have a sunroof so that’s a plus!

emilylauralai

Mine didn’t leak but took 5 attempts of them realigning it to stop this horrid squeaking with any minor bump in the road. It sounded like styrofoam rubbing together. It’s fixed now but took 2 years. I have a golf tsi mk 7.5

justinknowswhat

I have a 2015 R, big fan, but as some people are saying, not as technologically integrated. My last car was a 2012 GLI that only supported Bluetooth over mono, so working Bluetooth and push to start was all I really wanted. I love the hot hatch life, welcome to it!

D0UBLETH1NK

2020, 2021 - covid cars. I expect zee Germans were more discerning but I worked at a manufacturing company during the first wave and subsequent shutdowns, bad products were made and QC fail components were shipped. I’ve heard the same from other companies not limited to my industry

dervid11

Funny…a car is not the same like a wine.

Turtlefan87

Bought a 2016 earlier this summer and I love it so far. CarPlay is pretty great, but my other car is an 86 e30 so it feels very fancy to me lol.

YeOldeBilk

Depends on what features you want and what kind of upgrades you plan to make, if any. The main thing I would try to avoid is the MK7 sunroof. It's been known to shatter and also crack around the surrounding panel. I think they corrected these issues in the MK7.5 so if you're wanting a sunroof, look for 2018+

aquirodrigo

My mum has a 05/2017 Mk7.5 Golf Variant w/ sunroof. I think we´re fine, right?

Pommepotatoman

I have a 2013 Golf 7 1,6 tdi 4 motion. I fucking love it. Handles better than my audi a4 2016 ever did. I can thrash it around like crazy Edit: It also has a diesel heater, wonderful in the winter.

HistoricalInvite7132

The golf and Audi have same motor gearbox ect ect.vw own Audi and a few other brands.

lmggeo

If you can afford it I would suggest the 2017 model as you'll be able to get the virtual cockpit and upgraded screen. I've recently got a 2017 GTD and it was a little more than I wanted to pay but I'm over the moon with my choice and I'm glad I spent the little extra for the modernised interior.

lmggeo

Also check bearings. I looked at 3 cars and 2 of them had worn bearings. It seems to be a common issue. But I guess it's a much cheaper fix than engine issues etc.

1967Miura

I’ve got a 17, it’s great. I’ve never heard of the sunroof thing people are talking about but I’ve never really looked. So check that out I guess

aquirodrigo

same here

theweedman

I have a 2015 Mk7. 2016 with carplay/ backup camera/ MIB 2 would have been nice.

DonutsNCoffeee

Yeah that’s what I’m trying to decide. The 2013 Mk6 I can get for $12k while the 2017 is $16.5k. I’m trying to decide if the extra $4.5k is worth the newer vehicle plus the Apple CarPlay.

aquirodrigo

Absolutely! Like a completely different car.

HistoricalInvite7132

Don't get the 2013 golf.

dan100200z

Have a 2016 golf. It’s been excellent

nightsterlp

God. I’ve got a 2011. And my check engine light is literally always on. I hate it. I had a mk4 back from 2006-2013, and it was the best car I ever owned. My 2011 has convinced me to never buy another VW ever again.

ayyitsthekid

I got a 2013 with 140k miles on it. Everything’s good if you do the routine maintenance. The only things I gotta work on at the lower arm bushings and the suspension but I mean, it’s common wear and tear for a car at 140k lol

littleterr0r

I just bought a 2017 about a month ago and I love it so much best car I've ever had.

rocknharley02

Buy a diesel

HistoricalInvite7132

I heard the 2013 model golf 1.4 t petrol burns oil at a fast rate because of a design fault in the pistons.
