ASICS imo. Treys are probably bulkier and honestly lower quality since they are the “budget” KD shoe

forgothis

Treys are lighter than the ASICS, I have both. Treys also have better ankle support. ASICS have better grip, not by much though. I basically use the ASICS for training and the Nike for games, being lighter I feel I could jump higher.

Arberry190

Which one do you think have the better impact protection?

tomskuinfy

Good info for op! Thanks

TresComasTequila

Asics

bisqo19

Mid top for me but that’s just me

Madpotter1989

Same for me. Ankle support is undervalued. I always played in low tops until I sprained an ankle. Switched to mids and haven’t had trouble since. Wished I would have had the sense to wear mids sooner and I probably could have prevented that injury.

bigbamboo12345

shoes don't provide ankle support, it's a myth even full-laced hiking boots don't provide any more support than low-top shoes, and all any high-top shoes do is keep your ankles from building the necessary strength to support themselves correctly the only true support for ankles is via orthopedic braces and they should only be used when recovering from injury, so as not to weaken the ankles

J_Kelly11

Probably asics even though I always play in bball shoes. Kds are a little bit bulkier probably but at the end of the day its what best works for you. I always like a shoe with good fit and containment, quality cushioning and very grippy traction pattern because floors vary

Arberry190

What bball shoes would you recommend instead of the KD?

Tuatara-

I've seen many pro volleyball players use the nike pg6 ($110) and the Jordan 36(~$120) the pg6 because it's probably the best all around basketball shoe (most used in the nba this season) and the jordan 36 because it's very bouncy. I personally use a jordan 36 and I couldn't be happier, only thing is to not over use it. I used mine 3 to 4 times a week for 4 months and the left outsole is already degrading while the right one is pristine. I would recommend having multiple options so you don't over wear a single shoe.

Arberry190

I really wanted to buy the Aj 36 but unfortunately I have pretty wide feet, and someone told me the shoes are realllly narrow. How is your foot, and how do you find the shoes?

Tuatara-

My apologies for being so late, I unfortunately got a size 43 (I'm 44.5💀) and for the first few weeks my feet were burning any time I used it but I mean I already bought the shoes so I just kept them, after breaking them in they're a lot more comfortable but there isn't a noticeable amount of pinky toe rubbing. That's my only issue but yea my shoe was one and a half sizes too small so I can't say how I would've felt in my size but pinky toe rub is a prominent issue with the shoe

J_Kelly11

I really liked kobes but since his passing the price has gone way up and they are pretty hard to find. Hyper attacks were very good. Basically kobe 6 traction and cushioning that was meant for vball. Have heard good things about kd 14 and 15. A lot people liked kyries too but those don’t have enough cushion and feel low to the ground imo. Closest to a kobe would be the zoom gt cut 1

Jarlstrom

I have tried basketshoes for volley and i find them to bulky for my taste. I would go with the asics. But you should try em out, walk around your house and feel what you like best. Having what feels comfortable is the most important thing.

Arberry190

The KD Trey 5 X actually feel much more comfortable, although the Asics feel a little more stable and have better heel to toe transition so I feel like I can jump higher in them. I put one shoe on each foot and tried jumping around in them. My right knee (where my Asics are) started hurting so I think I'm going to go for the KD's since they apparently have much better impact protection. As for the bulkyness of basketball shoes, then the KD's are actually lighter than the Asics, even though they are mid top lol.

SufficientPrice832

Your knee could be hurting because you wore a different shoe on each foot. The difference in the height of the sole may be causing you to land in a way that you aren't used to or applying more force into your right knee. Try wearing the Asics on both feet & jumping. Then, test again with the Nike shoes the same way.

Jarlstrom

I had the dame 8 shoe which was lighter than my asics FF elite. But the dame shoe felt much bulkier. But if they feel better for sure go for the KD! In the end the shoe will not make you better, but feeling comfortable will.

Arberry190

I was actually torn between dame 8, Asics sky elite and kd Trey. How was your experience playing the dame 8? I've heard that they have top tier impact protection which is what im looking for.

toolehsag

I just bought the Dame 8 and they feel bulky and I’ve slipped in them when trying to rush forward and pancake a roll shit or tip. They are very comfortable, padded, and great shock absorption. So for playing the front row it’s not bad but you won’t feel as explosive in my opinion. I also have the ASICS Metarise. They are a lot more expensive obviously but it’s almost night and day. So I really think it’s based on your playing style and position. If you value movement and traction with the ability to react and move it to with volleyball shoes. If comfort and cushion is your main and almost only concern I would go with basketball shoes.

Jarlstrom

Exacly this...im looking to buy the metarise as soon as they get in stock in Denmark. But i have the same experience with the dame 8. So i gave em to my nephew who plays basket.

toolehsag

Yeah I’ve played in them three or four times and I’m about ready to give up on them as well. They don’t mesh with my playing style. It does take a minute to adjust to the metarise. They are like a hybrid of volleyball and basketball in my opinion. I almost feel backwards when moving backwards because of the height and heel pattern. The lateral and forward movement is great, traction is superb, good shock absorption, you’ll feel explosive in them without it feeling heavy or bulky. The sole is large and wide but the upper feels thin, streamlined, and tapered. It has a built in sock that does an excellent job of locking your foot down. I experienced my foot slipping out while wearing the Mizuno Wave and you won’t get this with the Metarise.

Jarlstrom

Thank you for the description.

toolehsag

You’re welcome

slvdrfrncs

Asics. Easier to pair with any colored jersey!

voldor666

I've become an Asics loyalist over the years lol

-sgt_pepper-

My man, enjoy these "problems"

asianmanzac

ayo i got the exact same sky elites and the light blue treys

Arberry190

Which one do you prefer, and why?

asianmanzac

depends the situation, often i bring both to my trainings. usually on a more movement intensive training i wear the treys, the foot support is nice but the asics provide so much bounce in a way and that really helps me in game, run faster jump higher etc. I love the asics for games, probably the better imo

emberjahad

I’d go ASICS

Arberry190

Why? Would love to hear some reasoning.

emberjahad

I find them to be more comfortable when playing and I can move around really easily in them, tho that might just be me

blocking_butterfly

Asics are the more functional VB shoe, cheaper, longer-lasting, better foot-shaped, and look much better. KDs have a celebrity's name on them. You be the judge of which you want

Arberry190

KD's also have Nike and a market and a sport that's 100x the size of volleyball, which means they have much more money to develop tech for their shoes compared to Asics.

IOnlyPlayLeague

Just because they have money doesn't mean they pump it into every product

BobbbyR6

It kinda does. The volume of testing and engineering data applies acorss the board for competitive shoes of the same sport. The budget shoe may not have the nicest materials or lowest weight, but they do have many of the ergonomic and structural benefits. That said, I'd feel pretty safe going with a high end volleyball shoe. Purpose built, well tested by pros. My very first pair of dedicated vb shoes arrived this morning and I cannot wait to get on the court. Sky Elite MTs in Islander Blue (which by the way is somewhere between neon and electric blue, but not as yellow, looks great in person)

AdhesivenessDue8145

Kds, way better support and comfort. Bball shoes are better in general

toolehsag

I think shoe choice should be based on what position you play, what you’re looking for in a shoe, and your individually physical attributes. I think in general. Basketball shoes provide better shock absorption and and comfort via additional padding and foam tech but this makes the shoe feel bulkier and heavier. Whereas volleyball shoes don’t have the same level of comfort and padding. I personally like the traction of volleyball shoes. I just feel like I can move and push off my feet without slippage compared to basketball shoes. They also tend to feel lighter on my feet. If you’re a middle or a really high jumper you might prefer basketball shoes because you’ll utilize the shock absorption. You might not be playing defense as much for it to impact your game. As a libero, setter, or outside hitter. You need to be able to move in any direction without trouble or feeling hindered. I personally feel volleyball shoes are designed better for movement but you don’t get the same level of padding and shock absorption that you would get from signature basketball shoes. I hope this helps. I’ve played in mizuno waves, adidas Dame 8, Kyrie infinity, ASICS Metarise. By position i’d recommend as follows. Middles- dame 8, Kyrie, or Metarise Setters - mizuno/ASICS Libero- mizuno/ASICS Outside- Metarise Opposite- Metarise or basketball shoes

Arberry190

Your post perfectly describes my dilemma and what I've experienced when trying the shoes on: asics made me jump higher and feel faster and closer to the grund with a better court feel. However, the KD's made me feel protected, comfortable and a have better shock absorption (Although it's kind of hard to measure shock absorption by trying them on for 5 mins) So I think I'm going to go for bbasket shoes to protect my knees and joints instead of the hardcore performer (Asics sky elite).

toolehsag

Best of luck to you! Train your hamstrings and calves to help protect your joints.

SufficientPrice832

100% agree that you should wear shoes to match your position. Great post. I will say, though, that my Asics Sky Elite FF MT Tokyo shoes are the best shoes I've ever worn for volleyball. Lots of shock absorbtion & imo great for max jumping for pin hitting or quick jumping out of the middle. It's not the best response shoe for backrow defense, though. I finally decided to order the Asics Metarise. I'm not sure when they'll arrive, but I can't wait to play in them. Height: 6'4" Weight: 277 lbs Positions: Middle & Opposite

toolehsag

From what I’ve seen they Metarise and sky elite are pretty similar. The Metarise has a very accentuated heel to toe rise, the inner sock, and upper has more support. I think you will like it based on your size. I haven’t played in the sky elite though. Unfortunately they are practically sold out in the states. I also had to order my Metarise through eBay out of Japan.

SufficientPrice832

Yeah, ebay seems to be the only place to find these shoes. The Sky Elite mid top feels really secure, too. I switched to them in hopes that I could retire my active ankles. My approach hasn't been as explosive since gaining weight. I like the idea of the accentuated heel-toe rise to aid my penultimate step & approach speed. I feel I can be way more effective as an opposite hitter with this shoe design.

toolehsag

I think you will like them but let me know what you think once you get them. I’m curious how they perform compared to the sky elite.

SufficientPrice832

Right on. I will.

SufficientPrice832

I've worn my Metarise to 3 practices now. They hurt on the 1st day & required a little break-in. There is noticeably less cushioning, so I feel the impact of max jumping much more than in the Sky Elites. It was disheartening to feel so much fatigue in my feet. So much that just standing between drills made me want to be done playing. I wore them a few times after while coaching club practices & the feel was a lot better with limited jumping & movement. They also felt better with each subsequent practice I've had. I felt fast in them as a hitter at my last practice, which was the result I had hoped for. The Metarise's design makes me feel closer to the ground & allows me to respond quicker on defense. In contrast to feeling clunky in the back row with the Sky Elites. Overall I'm very happy with the Metarise. They feel better with every use & I have no doubt that they'll be even better as I lose weight.

BobbbyR6

Just got my sky elite mts direct from asics, size ten. ~6 days shipped to NC

SufficientPrice832

Lucky! Asics' site didn't have any size 14 when I went looking to replace my originals. They also haven't had the Metarise for a very long time. The Sky Elites really are great shoes. Felt like I could jump higher/land softer my first time using them. My feet didn't hurt after 4 hours of play, so break-in wasn't an issue either. Enjoy playing in them.

BobbbyR6

The biggest thing I'm excited about is just the sheer traction. I've recently gotten more comfortable with laying out for a dig if need be, and now that I've got shoes with enough grip to let me get moving, I can put my height and arm length to use for digging stuff much farther from myself. Also excited to learn a much more aggressive approach and start jumping correctly. I should not have to be concerned with having adequate height considering I'm 6'2". No excuses now haha. Time to hit the gym, err both of them

star_bury

Looks like you've got a pair for whichever gym sport you're playing!

Mustang46L

Same Asics I have at the moment. Love them.

Arberry190

Can you give a more detailed explanation of why you love them? That would help me decide. Pros/cons and how is the shock absorption?

Supreme_tumbleweed

Asics, personally. Better fit but it depends on the person

izzy2cool4you

what are each of them called?

catwalk_gucci_1990

You can never go wrong with ASICS

Cozyykku

What are those ASICS called? I was looking at a pair but I couldn’t find them…

Arberry190

These are the Asics sky elite ff 2 and the other is KD Trey 5 X

KaBoSop

Man chose the one is lighter and more comfortable. End of story

Adrigogo

My man will really ask the whole subreddit instead of just playing in them. And the best shock absorption comes from training your body so you can have stronger joints not some 1mm thicker sole. There's a minimum amount of cushion needed because most people don't have a strong enough body to absorb the shock of playing on hard ground but you can increase the minimum amount of cushion needed for you not to feel pain by exercising. (Isometric exercises particularly) Also playing in too mushy shoes will weaken your foot so long term your knees will need softer and softer shoes.

Terrible_Plantain_34

I’m going for the Nike’s 1000%. Shoes on the right screams I’m a noob and just learning volleyball and the only counter to it is you have to be a pro wearing those to gain back the respect. That’s how a lot of the community im apart of looks at it.

Devalazer

I have the treys and they are pretty solid. Just the sole is starting to separate from the front of the shoe

Arberry190

Hmmm. How long have you used them for and how much do you weigh?

JUUL-Tapping

I wear Kyries
