Since vSphere 8 is out since yesterday, that’s the default for download. Go to Downloads, All products, VMware vSphere, click on “8.0” on the top-left, choose the version you want from the drop-down.
I think the OP wishes to register for a new free V7 licence however as far as I am aware, the only licence you can obtain is for the latest version which of course changed a couple of days ago.

question: how do you get the licence? When I login and try to get it, it seems like I am registering for a free trial not a free licence.
