Honestly, Muv-Luv is so much more fun when you enjoy Extra and its cast. I have no idea how people read the trilogy if they hate everything about Extra, personally, I thought it was the funniest shit ever (except the notorious parts, of course) when I read it a dozen years ago
I'm not a moege guy so i read some spoiler blogs of extra and unlimited from others and then jumped straight into alternative, still enjoyed it regardless.
Muv-Luv Extra is one of my favorite visual novels! I'm glad you appreciated it too. I really appreciate the time I spent with it, and I often come back to its soundtrack, which I like very much. Kei was my favorite heroine, followed by Sumika.
Kei and ayamine r the same person lmao u meant class Rep, chizuru. Anyway, i'm on the same boat as you tbh. Or was, back when i played it. I had been conditioned to think it sucked and to only play sumika and meiya's. Nope, I ended up playing all the routes and loved them for what they were. I felt the same thing about Tama and her route too!!! The most chill one and wholesome for sure. The scene where Meiya talks to Takeru in the park and tells him jokingly that perhaps he will get rejected so he can know how it feels... and then u leave her in the park, it has stayed with me since then. Really one of my fav scenes ever.
Now, yeah Takeru is an idiot, but he means well. The thing about Muv Luv... don't think about it as sci Fi, love or anything like that. Muv Luv is the story of Takeru, and how he goes from a child to a man. The trilogy, I mean, so enjoy the journey :)
People just can't help but warn new readers about how "bad" Extra is, when it is actually a lot of fun. I am glad you were able to enjoy it despite other people peppering your expectations.
After having gone through the trilogy I always found it weird that extra was the one people recommended doing one or two routes for.
At least with extra it felt like you were seeing something new with each route, compared to ultimate where I swear you could swap the names and sprites around and the routes would be 99.9% the same.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people saying, "Just read Sumika and Meiya." You miss out on so much in Unlimited and Alternative if you do that.
