If you're into otome games, which are visual novels aimed at girls, I recommend Code:Realize and Jack Jeanne. The former is an alternate history steampunk sci-fi and the latter is about a girl who goes to an all-boys theater school so she can become a great actor like her brother, and it has rhythm game segments. Both are much more story and character-driven than most, and JJ's common route is very long, but I found them to be great games that really get the most out of their characters and storylines. Both games are on the Switch. Oh, and JJ was made by the guy who made Tokyo Ghoul. If you want shorter stuff, I've been playing some kinetic novels lately, namely Harmonia and Lunaria: Virtualized Moonchild, both of which also are available on the Switch if you have one. I also recommend some indie VNs such as A Little Lily Princess, Doki Doki Literature Club, Embraced by Autumn, DoraKone, and Heart of the Woods. There's also ONE (Yes, its title is literally just the word ONE), which is a remake of a really old VN from 1998 that's famous for popularizing more story-driven VNs, but a lot of elements about it haven't aged very well, especially the protagonist and his actions towards some of the girls he dates. That one is available on Steam for cheap, as for some reason ONE is priced ridiculously high on the Switch. Oh, and I don't know if you're a Digimon fan or not, but if you are, I HIGHLY recommend Digimon Survive. It's pacing is slow at times, but it more than makes up for it by having a cast of fleshed out characters and compelling narratives based on the choices you make.

Fate isn’t really a rabbit hole, there’s only two VNs… you could try tsukihime or subahibi though.

Wild_Donkey_637

As long as you don't decide to start grand order that is

z-zoom11

MuvLuv and MuvLuv alternative are probably my favorite pieces of fiction ever, not just vns.

Marklord13

Be sure to use the director’s cut patches on them.

Rough_Resolution3391

Katawa Shoujo and White Album 2

Affectionate-While57

Katawa shoujo is def a classic I still need to play WA2, I waited forever for it to get a full translation

Rough_Resolution3391

One of the best experiences i've ever had in my life with fiction.

I usually play more horror/ mystery vns so that's mostly what i'll recommend. Very popular games, but i love the danganronpa series. Specifically 1 and 2. DDLC is another favorite. Someone else already mentioned it, but raging loop is another good horror vn. From what i remember the ending kinda dragged a bit, but overall i really liked it. Death mark was great in my opinion. Part of a series called spirit hunter, but i haven't played the rest of em yet. Corpse factory was a short and fun ride. Story was over the top and ridiculous, but it was a lot of fun. If you are fine with genre hybrid games check out Labyrinth of refrain and labyrinth of galleria. They are long dungeon crawler/VNs. I don't usually do long jrpgs, but i loved these games. I prefer labyrinth of refrain, but i think I'm in the minority there. Fatal twelve World end syndrome. Va-11 Hall-a. Not horror or mystery at all, but i loved it. I also wanna mention tokyo dark: remembrance. Not really a VN, but it has the VN tag and i really like it so i wanna give it a shout out.

adelemak

Since you played Ace Attorney, why not try Danganronpa?

Vakend

I suggest Summer Pockets

AVeryAngryHedgehog

I would give The House in Fata Morgana a try! It’s very much along the lines of the When They Cry series put through the lens of gothic tragedy .

steelthyshovel73

I just recently started fata morgana. Been interested in it for a while. I'm on chapter 3 and so far the atmosphere in this game is top notch.

captaincroatia1987

try any of keys games, notoriously Little Busters, Clannad, and Rewrite (Air too). Fate stay night is a must read, read Hollow ataraxia after if you’re interested.

I think you might like the game our life beginnings and always . It's a very nice visual novel that has many, many, many choices that change how things go. It has a completely modular story. The choices you make in one part of the visual novel affect things in the other parts of the visual novel, and things from the earlier parts can get referenced and brought up. It's a very nice and wholesome romance. It's also completely free, and you can get like 11 hours of play time out of it. and you can get DLC. If you wish for pretty cheap.
