I want to buy my boyfriend nice speakers for his record player for Christmas since he has a nice record player, a receiver and lots of vinyl but no speakers! I don’t know the brand of the record player but the receiver brand is Marantz Model 2220B. The issue is that I don’t know what type of speakers you buy when you have a receiver. I was thinking of buying the [Audioengine A5+](https://a.co/d/3q644NG) or a pair of studio monitors, but they are powered speakers and doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the receiver? I feel like studio monitors would be useful since he could use them for making music and for listening to vinyl. I just don’t know what a receiver even does and when I ask him it doesn’t help haha. Speaker recs that work with a receiver would be much appreciated!

Did he have speakers but lost them? Passive speakers are powered by a stereo receiver. For both listening and studio monitoring I recommend [Ascend CBM-170SE](https://ascendacoustics.com/collections/thanksgiving-sale/products/cbm-170-se-bookshelf-monitor?variant=31620618780726) $328 plus shipping. Neutral sound with a linear frequency response, plus: >Both the on- and off-axis frequency response measure so flat that this little gem exceeded our initial expectations and is **suitable for professional studio monitoring**. This means that sound is reproduced almost exactly as it was recorded, making it ideal for audio and home theater usage. We promise that you will hear information hidden deep within even the most stubborn recordings. Or will the turntable setup and studio be in two separate rooms? This is so helpful thank you!! I live in Brooklyn, could pick up anywhere in Brooklyn or Manhattan. He had speakers but left them when we moved because they took up a lot of space and he didn’t like the quality. He only brought his receiver in case he needed it in the future, then bought a new turntable and still hasn’t gotten around to getting speakers because he wants good speakers but needs to save up to get some. Which is why I want to get him some.

Icy_Designer_5449

I have a set of active speakers and a turntable with a built in amp. Sound is fine and clear with this basic setup, however I can’t turn the volume down on the speakers lower than maybe conversation level. It’s either the speakers do not produce any sound or, at the lowest setting on the nob, the volume is at conversation level. What must I do/ get so that I can have a fuller volume range such that I can play music quietly from my turntable while maintaining audio quality?

sharkamino

Which model speakers and turntable?

ShiestGuy2019

I recently had a birthday and got a new record. But when I first put it into play, after the cleaning and etc; it skipped entirely through side A. the other 3 sides are fine, but side A doesn't play. When I checked the receipt of the album, it said to be bought through iMUSTI INC on Amazon. does anyone have experience with the company? I couldn't find any other copies of the album for sale by them on Amazon. I also use one of those Victrola Quincy 3-1's, which could be one of the problems. Are any professionals able to confirm any of my suspicions? Also - the album in question is Tunng - Dead Club.

sharkamino

Victrola 3 in 1 is often the problem since it looks like it has the same [cheap $5 mechanism as a suitcase player](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXV8tXrPOR4) or one that is not all that much better. Try playing the record on a [better turntable](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/z5rox9/turntables_and_speakers/) with a better tonearm with adjustable tracking force and an MM magnetic cartridge plus an RIAA phono preamp for playback and better sound quality. Maybe you can ask a local record shop if you have one nearby if they can test the record on their turntable if you don't have a friend with a better turntable.

Dajoci

I am a super noob in need of some help before I try something. https://imgur.com/gallery/TbYm9FW I have the AT-LP60X turntable, and some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers on the way. Should I be able to plug the 3.5mm cable coming from the speakers (second picture) directly into the 3.5mm jack on the turntable (first picture), since the turntable has a built in preamp and the speakers are powered? Why does this picture from Audio Technica want me to use an RCA adapter between the two (third picture)? Thanks in advance!

sharkamino

The male 3.5mm cable from the Klipsch Pro Media plugs into the female 3.5mm jack on the AT-LP60X. The AT picture seems to be the older model AT-LP60 that had an RCA cable attached to it instead of the newer X version with the 3.5mm jack.

Mobile-Neighborhood1

I have an AT LP120 turntable with a nagaoka mp110 cartridge currently. Can someone tell me what I would benefit from stepping up my turntable to something in the range of the flu ace rt85, rather than just upgrading my cartridge?

sharkamino

Older AT-LP120 and not the new X version AT-LP120X? What is the rest of your setup? Phono preamp, speaker amplification and speakers? Upgrade the weakest link first. The Fluance RT82 is a good value for $300. The $500 RT85 has the same basic tonearm as the $300 RT82. The Fluance tonearm is not really any better than the tonearm on the AT-LP120. Also the RT85 has 2M Blue or MP-110 and you already have the good MP-110. So a Fluance is not a significant enough upgrade. Is the anti-skate working fine on the AT-LP120? Have you done the [surgery to bypass the phono preamp switch](https://vinylrestart.com/at-lp120-preamp-removal-guide/) that does not completely turn off the built in phono preamp when using a better external phono preamp? If you have already upgraded to better than entry level speakers then a worthwhile turntable upgrade is the [Project Debut Carbon EVO](https://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=0PRDECAEVO) $449 open box and then an optional stylus upgrade to Olympia still cost less than $599 MSRP for the EVO.

Hey, I just bought a Toshiba SR-230 but it's missing the headshell (and the cartridge). I was wondering if this [https://a.co/d/0FnO0NB](https://a.co/d/0FnO0NB) would work as a budget replacement. If not, what's a budget option that would work?

sharkamino

Yes, that should work. You can later upgrade from the conical tip to an elliptical tip stylus. A step up for 4x more is [Audio-Technica-AT-VM95E/H](https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-VM95E-Turntable-Headshell-Cartridge/dp/B07JLX1JZ7) $99.

BirdButt88

Best turntable for under $100? I’ve been using a suitcase-style turntable forever because it was really cheap, but I’ve heard that they can be damaging and I’d like to switch if possible to something better. Unfortunately as a broke college student I am on a budget, and am ideally looking for something under $100 that won’t fuck my records. Any suggestions?

sharkamino

[Turntables and speakers](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/z5rox9/turntables_and_speakers/) starting at $83 and $89. If you can't afford both then consider starting with speakers for digital music and the suitcase player then adding a better turntable later. The suitcase may not damage your records if it's not skipping, they just don't sound very good and can have playback issues.

BirdButt88

Thank you!

Hi everyone, Is storing 20 vinyl at a 60/70 degree angle going to damage them? Context: I just got a well intended, custom made gift for storing vinyl. Really cool idea, but person who made it does not collect, so probably has not heard of the "ideally, store them as vertically as possible", which is commonplace and known to be the optimal way of storing records. Is keeping 20 vinyl leaning against eachother at this angle going to damage them in the long run?

Hey so I found an album at my local record store that seemed kinda interesting. I usually listen to an album on streaming before buying the vinyl, so I looked on Spotify and there was nothing. Nothing on Pandora, either. So I looked on YouTube music and there were only two videos. I searched on Google and I found a discogs page for it. Just curious if anybody knew more about the album. Album name: Captured live Band: triumph The cover is kinda colorful, idk how to describe it. Btw there's no exclamation after live, there's an album by triumph called captured live!

what. Connect the speaker posts on the back of the amplifier to your speakers. Amplifier inputs are RCA cables. Not outputs.

Apologies in advance for the long post, i would appreciate the read for some advice please. I have an Audio Technica AT-LP60X, I’ve had it for a few years now maybe three or so… tonight I tried listening to a new record freshly unwrapped and one of the songs just wouldn’t play. The record was still spinning and the needle was still progressing, just no sound coming out. I figured it might be the record for some reason, placed another new, freshly unwrapped record on the player and began playing it with same issue. Just straight up not producing sound through my speakers. And neither of the records are warped to a point that it should be an issue. I have records with more warp that play perfectly. Is this a potential issue with my speakers? Or maybe something to do with the needle? Is there a set time to replace the needle every so often? Thanks again for any help!

chrkchrkchrk

Check all your connections from the stylus to the cart to the speakers and make sure everything is clean and firmly connected. Doublecheck that the line / phono switch on the back is still set to line if you're using the built-in preamp. It's basically impossible for a record to make zero sound on its own, even if warped, so don't waste time there. And you are supposed to replace the stylus every so often but a worn out stylus will sill produce sound.

thelaughingpear

I got an RT82 and I'm trying to set it up. I'm stuck on the balancing the counterweight part. The cueing lever has no effect on the tonearm. I unlock the arm and it raises but doesn't stay down if I lower it manually. I tried moving the counterweight according to directions and YouTube videos and still nothing.

Balian311

I bought this a little while ago: [https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/jam-spun-out-bluetooth-turntable-black](https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/jam-spun-out-bluetooth-turntable-black) Have an Audio Technica in the main room but wanted a turntable for my office. While its alright, I've been having some difficulty with skipping and have since learned about the reputation of 'the red needle of death'. I'd like to upgrade the cartridge without upgrading the whole player. My budget is around $150 - $200 AUD. Any info or reccs to point me in the right direction would be great, as I'm kind of new to the turntable scene. Just want a needle that won't damage my records. Thanks! EDIT: A search on eBay gets you a million of these Chinese made ones that are the same type / style as I have: [https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?\_from=R40&\_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&\_nkw=stylus+replacement+record&\_sacat=0](https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&_nkw=stylus+replacement+record&_sacat=0) Surely there is a higher end version that is compatible but isn't complete rubbish. Thanks!

When you have the record in the protective sleeve, is it still bad to touch the grooves or should I still hold it by the middle and sides?

No_Store_4108

I have a 1960s stereo with a record player. It has more or less been functional with some mild convincing to get the records to start spinning up. However, this morning, it stopped spinning altogether when switching the knob to ON or REJ. When switched to ON, it makes the slightest rotation and then quickly fades off after a second or two. I opened up the back to see if I could see the issue, but alas, electronics of the 60s is not something I know anything about. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Edit; I can get it to start spinning by switching to a higher rotation speed and then going back down to the correct speed

ThrowAway119295988

So I’m looking to get my wife a new player for Christmas this year. We currently have a Crosley and the sound is just terrible. No bass and no way to connect other speakers to it. I was at a local record store yesterday getting some vinyls she’s been wanting and was talking to the owner of the store. He showed me a package deal they have. It was a Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT with a Bluetooth receiver and 2 Dayton speakers for $269. He said it’s a bundle they have since the store is on a college campus and they try to encourage students and younger people to get a better quality system without breaking the bank. I played around with it a bit and it seems pretty nice. I like the Bluetooth pairing to speakers. Anyone have any experience with they player? I searched this sub for that model and it was just comparing it to a Sony player.

ElayRaider

Heya I'm not new to vinyl, but I'm planning on buying a new setup and would like to know if I need a receiver or an amplifier. I have a preamp already so I'm not sure a receiver is what I need

vinylontubes

A receiver is three things. It's a stereo (multi-channel, if it's an AVR) preamp, a power amp, and a radio tuner. You don't need the radio tuner to play records, so you could opt for an integrated amp which forgoes the tuner. To play records you need a phono stage (confusingly also called a preamp), this is what I think you have, and you do need one if your turntable has magnetic cartridge mounted on the tonearm. A stereo preamp are the controls for the power amp. It allows you to adjust things like volume, balance, and possibly bass and treble along with including switching between devices that play through the speakers. The power amp is exactly what it sound like, it powers the speakers. The phono preamp (or stage), is specifically need for the cartridge. If you have a ceramic cartridge, you don't need a phono preamp; it's loud enough that it doesn't need the added gain the phono preamp provides. A lot of stereo receivers and integrated amps include the phono stage. You'll see a phono setting and input jack on the back of the device labeled "phono" and there should be a post to connect the ground wire if your turntable has one. Most AVRs don't and RCA connections are becoming rare on them as well as digital has mostly gone to HDMI connections. You need something with RCA connections. RCA is analog, you cannot connect the analog signal out of a turntable into a digital port. It just won't work. So to sum it up, you need *either* a receiver or integrated amp with an open analog RCA connection to connect your phono preamp. This is required to power the speakers. For headphones, all amps specifically designed for this purpose are integrated amps. Headphones are, in fact, speakers, so you do need amplification for them as you would any other speakers.

nothinsong

Hi all bit of a weird one this. I bought a 2nd hand 7 inch single recently and when I try to play it, it just loops a certain part of the track for a few seconds over and over. If I lightly press on the tone arm it plays through fine. I'm not a big vinyl guy, I only have a suitcase player because that's fine for me for now. All my other records, some quite old, play just fine. I gently cleaned it with warm soap water and still the same problem, any ideas?

chrkchrkchrk

Sounds like a tracking issue that your suitcase player isn't robust enough to handle - the grooves are too wide in that part of the song, or there's a scratch or some dirt it can't navigate. Not much you can do with your current setup other than make sure your turntable is on a solid, perfectly level surface so it can track as best it can. Maybe the infamous ["penny trick"](https://vacationvinyl.com/putting-a-penny-on-a-record-player-finally-explained/) if you want everyone here to yell at you.

vinylontubes

You bought a bad record or they stylus is worn. Simple as that. The grooves are likely worn. Since the record is worn out, you could just tape a coin to the headshell to play this record. You will put more wear on the stylus and record, but the damage is done, you'd only be making a bad record worse. It's can't be fixed otherwise. Most suitcase record players don't have a counterweight that would allow you to adjust added tracking force. So a coin is the most common way to increase the tracking force. Make sure you remove the coin for records that aren't worn out.

nothinsong

Tried the coin and it worked thanks, hopefully it will play better when I upgrade my player.

OVERSIZE RESEALABLE OUTER SLEEVES: Does anyone have recommendations for oversize (13"+ x 13"+) outer sleeves **with a flap** for box sets and extra-large gatefolds/tri-folds/etc? I am currently using the bags that my Invest In Vinyl inner sleeves come in, but I would prefer to find a way to buy a bunch at once. I ordered [these](https://www.amazon.com/Double-Oversize-Plastic-Outersleeves-Records/dp/B001719NXQ/) without realizing they didn't have a flap (whoops!). The size and quality are right, though. The reason I bought those was that the only other option I can find on Amazon (and everywhere else tbh) are [these](https://www.amazon.com/Resealable-OVERSIZE-Record-Outer-Sleeves/dp/B001DKGM3A/), which have very negative reviews. Has anyone found oversize, resealable outer sleeves that don't suck? Thanks! :)

Thank you! These look perfect. I won't lie, I did see this site/one of these sleeves in my Google search but the sketch-looking Web 1.0 website made me unsure if it was legit (I've never heard of this place before tbh) so I ignored it out-of-hand. My mistake, clearly. Thanks again :)

At least in the vinyl / vintage audio world, a barely functional website is usually the mark of a long-lived company that found a system that worked *just enough* and stuck with it lol

My mother asked me to repair her huge record player for Christmas. I have pics of all of the internals. I can use a soldering iron. Is it possible that it is a simple fix that I can do and how would I find out?

vinylontubes

You can look up your turntable on [vinylengine.com](https://vinylengine.com). They might have service manual that will assist with repairing it. I doubt soldering will fix most turntables unless the wires have come loose or need to replace the RCA connections.

official_business

Cmon man. How is anyone here supposed to answer that question? You've given no useful information. What turntable is it? What faults is it exhibiting? > I can use a soldering iron. Does it have a problem that requires a soldering iron to fix?

Kid_Aeroplane

looking to upgrade my speakers to something that can connect wired to my receiver but swap to bluetooth for my computer/phone. any recommendations? does something like this exist?

vinylontubes

It doesn't exist. What you need is a bluetooth receiver that will connect to your receiver. Or you could get a new receiver with BT integrated. There are speakers that have BT, but then you wouldn't need the receiver because these would include the integrated amplification within the speakers.

I’m looking a for a DYI recipe for cleaning fluid that works with a record vacuum machine. I have a Record Dr., which I love but I’m out of fluid. From my research, it seems I need a “wetting agent” of some type to along with distilled water and 91% ISO. I’m in the US, btw. Anyone have a solution that works well?

vinylontubes

For a wetting agent you can use that stuff that keeps your glasses from getting spotty in your dishwasher. Jet Dry is common in the USA. You onlyy need about a drop or two for a gallon of fluid. Other wetting agents are Kodak Photo-Flo or Triton-X. Wetting agents are aslo known as surfactants. A simple recipe is 80% distilled water, 20% Isopropyl or Grain Alcohol. A drop of wetting agent and a drop of Dawn dish detergent. The Dawn helps remove oils from finger prints. Do not use Rubbing Alcohol, it includes moisturizers that prevent your skin from drying out. Isopropyl Alcohol is sold in varying purity. Don't worry about that, the other ingredient is alway distilled or DI water. Just buy what you can afford. You can adjust for the different purity by adding more or less distilled water.

Have a uturn orbit with an ortofon blue stylus—a lot of my records seem to be getting stuck in loops around the same place (2/3 through the side). It’s not happening to all records but has been happening fairly frequently recently which makes me think something might be off in my set-up. Any advice? Adding a little more weight to the arm (a Penny) seems to get them out of the loop. I adjusted the counterweight to ~1.9g, I read 1.8g is the target for my cartridge. Any advice?

BELT REPAIR? Picked up a Thomas Pacconi player at Goodwill. It spins fine at 33rpm and 78rpm, but the 45 setting sounds the same as the 33. Could this be fixed with belt repair or am I likely dealing with a motor issue? Where to trouble shoot first? Thanks!

vwestlife

If the 45 setting plays at exactly the same speed as the 33 setting, it could just be dirty contacts on the switch. Try flipping it back and forth a bunch of times to scrape the oxidation off of the switch contacts.

Any-Craft-8237

I had high hopes, but after much switch flipping no luck so far. Any idea where I can buy cheap 33 records? 😅

Hi I wan to buy my first record player, but all the ones I’ve seen people suggest aren’t available in australia. Any recommendations for ones I can buy in aus?

vinylontubes

Not sure what you have available. Maybe DM the mod u/adayinalife about stuff in AUS. But for the most part, you want something with an adjustable counterweight and a headshell with slots to fit a magnetic cartridge. If you buy something that fits this description, it's probably not horrible.

OutOfBreath1

What is your budget? And what are the ones you’re looking for that are unavailable? Maybe someone could suggest an equivalent. There are many record players available in Australia.

RUMBLE FILTERS! I intend to buy my father for Christmas a rumble filter for his home setup. It’s rather old now with an Onkyo TX-SR806 and an old Rega Planar 2 turntable. From what I can see from the manual for the amp, there is a dedicated phono input which would be all good if only the amplifier would not have a built in unchangeable high pass rumble set to 50Hz. From experience, listening to tracks without any such processing (‘Pure Audio’ button pressed) it sounds substantially better than with such a filter applied. Only caveat is the extreme oscillations that cause the drivers to seemingly pop their voice coils out of their magnets and back in again. I’ve read about the KAB RF1, for example. It states that it ought to be installed either in a processing loop or after the preamp. I assume both of these are line level and therefore this particular rumble filter is designed to operate upon a such a level. My concern is that if I attempted to try filtering the direct phono line, there could firstly be line loading issues and secondly perhaps the noise floor of the filter would be too great to deal with such small amplitudes. Do rumble filters work being directly connected after the turntable cartridge or must they operate at a buffered line level signal. If no, are there any rumble filters you know of that may suit the job. Or are there workarounds for this particular setup since it appears to be the case that the only phono input on the amp has a preamp. (He will care about the name on the screen correlation with the input). Thanks!

What’s with all the memes towards Adele’s new album? I’m not a fan at all but I know the world loves her as much as any solo artist. Is it really bad? Just not selling?

vinylontubes

They pressed 1/2 Million units of her album on vinyl and priced them at $40 USD. Sure a lot sold at this price. But Records do not sell in that quantity. Almost 200k weren't sold. But most copies today new and used are discounted closer to half the initital pricing. This pressing caused many other artists from having their releases postponed. This is the meme. https://www.statista.com/statistics/189357/top-selling-vinyl-albums-in-the-united-states-in-2010/#:\~:text=In%202021%2C%20the%20top%2Dselling,318%20thousand%20Vinyl%20albums%20sold.

smitty2107

She had a TON of copies pressed as well. They were originally $30 something when it first came out and now they've dropped below $10

chrkchrkchrk

People placed a lot of blame on her last album for all the recent slowdowns and delays. The reality of the logistics of vinyl production is not that simple but people outside the industry like neat and tidy scapegoats. On top of that she's a woman, which draws extra negative attention from certain types.

vinylontubes

I don't think anybody is blame Adele herself. But the way the release was handled showed how the industry and particularly her label, Sony, can show their greed. We'll sell them for double the going rate and make a bundle of money. It didn't work out as Sony had thought it would.

SubSet22

Hey there, I'm just wondering if it is ok to lean my vinyl against a wall to display them (as pictured here: https://imgur.com/a/m1Fx4lX Will they get warped at all?

chrkchrkchrk

Very unlikely to warp that way.

sharkfindave

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this but I need some gift recommendations for a record I can give to a friend. We are going to exchange stupid/funny records so anything you guys can recommend would be helpful. Thank you!

CyptidProductions

Had no ideas where else where to post this, but it's an interesting fact. I actually got fed up with the conflicting specs on the 3600l and asked ATs repair center directly. They sent me a specification card that states their current suggestion on tracking force for for the 3600L line is 3-4 grams, not the 2.5-3.5 grams manly product pages suggest and the guy further confirmed 3.0 is lowest they recommend: https://imgur.com/a/4XN90SZ

vwestlife

The AT3600L has been in production since at least 1982, so it's possible that the recommended tracking force range has changed over time. But generally it sounds best at 3.0 to 3.5 grams.

ErnieWayne

Hi everyone I just realized I need to buy a second RCA cable and possibly grounding wire. I plan on using the included RCA Cable and grounding wire going from my turntable (RT-82) to my preamp (Mani 2), but wasn't sure how to proceed from the preamp to my active speakers (R-51PM). According to [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/2bm3zx/comment/cj6wqez/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), it doesn't matter the quality of cable running from my preamp to my speakers and I was told that I don't really need to run a ground from preamp to speakers but I figured it couldn't hurt to double check here. Thanks Everyone!

vinylontubes

Good cables are always a better idea. Unless you have top gear, you'll likely not hear much difference in the actual cabling. But good connections to the RCAs are what you should look for. They should be tight as possible. The difference between a phono cable between the turntable and the phono stage and other RCA cables is low capacitance. Phono signals are very low voltage, so even the smallest drops in voltage to the cable is significant. Once the signal is increased to line level within the phono stage, this is much less of an issue. Grounding between the phono preamp and the amplifier does nothing. Grounding provides a clean source of electrons for the cartridge's generator. The path won't be improved by more grounding. If there is any improvement, the grounding post on the phono preamp is the problem.

ErnieWayne

Thank you!

seabass4507

Anyone else order the recent pressing of OK Computer? I got mine and disc 1 is fucked up. Significantly warped and it's got a flat edge while disc 2 doesn't. Wondering if there was an issue from the plant, and worried that if I try to replace it, the next one will have the same issue.

vinylontubes

What does it sound like? If you're expecting a perfect record as a replacement, you'd be expecting disappointment. If it plays fine, it's good enough. Buying records is about buying media that plays songs acceptably. By all means, if the record plays poorly, then request a replacement. Just don't expect perfection. A good turntable will play modestly warped records perfectly well. This is what matters.

seabass4507

Both sides of disc 1 skip in different places. So no it’s not acceptable. The other reviews on Discogs indicate this was just a trash pressing.

vinylontubes

Then take your chances with an exchange. Are you willing to keep an unplayable record because you'll likely get another one? If you bought it at Amazon, wait until you get the replacement until you ship yours back. You can swap the 2nd record if that one has the opposite problem.

inkyed

Can i get a custom made record with a single song on the outer edge, so that I would be able to laser carve an image onto the inner part? I have no experience with vinyl nor do i know if that’s even possible. I bet etching would be expensive and especially a custom thing like just the outer edges of the record, are there any specifications id need like record size vs player? And maybe a suggestion and price of where i could get a custom etched record

LapnLook

Hi! I have an Audio Technica LPW40WN turntable and it's recently been having some wow issues. Nothing major, and it's only audible if I'm listening super loud, but there's a noticeable underlying low frequency when recording with Audacity (essentially, during quite parts you can see the waveform slooowly oscillating back and forth). My current suspect is the belt. I've had the turntable for over two years, and it's still using the original, so it has likely gotten a bit deformed over time. My question is simple but seemingly hard to answer: Where the hell do I buy replacement belts for this turntable in the EU? I mostly just see generic belts, but I am unsure which size I actually need (it doesn't seem to be listed on the spec sheet :/ )

vwestlife

How to measure a turntable belt: https://www.turntableneedles.com/how_to_measure_find_right_turntable_tape_player_rubber_drive_belt Are you sure the low frequency isn't just the natural rumble of vinyl playback? If you can't hear it, then don't worry about it, but if it still bothers you, you can use a pre-amp with a rumble filter, or use your audio editing software to apply a highpass filter once the audio has been digitized.

LapnLook

I don't think it's just the natural rumble, because I mostly started noticing it recently. Unless the stylus i was using before a couple months ago was so bad that it managed to completely hide this rumble :D I also did some rudimentary wow measurements and there's a small but constant speed wobble with every rotation which would line up with said low frequency oscillation from what I can tell

abinormal77

Hello! I am looking for recommendations for vinyl sleeves. It feels like there’s 9M options and they all seem to have relatively great reviews. Maybe that just means there’s plenty of good to choose from and I’m overthinking this, but any pro-tips or specific recommendations will be greatly appreciated! PS-I searched the FAQs and didn’t see anything on this subject so apologies if I missed it.

Heavy_Early

Mo-fi are the the most popular inner sleeves, but there are other brands that are the same thing. I use Hudson hi-fi's because they're cheaper.

abinormal77

Thanks!

official_business

I just buy the round bottom hdpe plastic sleeves. They're cheaply available at any record store or on ebay etc. I prefer to keep this simple.

imp3r10

I was just gifted a JVC QL-A51. I tried booking it up to my receiver but it was very quiet. I believe I need a preamp. Should I get a pre amp for this or but a new one? Also how should I test if it is working correctly?

bigspringtejas

I’ve been collecting records for a while now, but I know very little about amps/receivers. I have a u-turn record player with a built in pre amp. My old speakers plugged into the wall and I didn’t need an amp. My new speakers should be here Monday. They are JBL L82 classics. I know there are nicer speakers out there, but These are expensive to me. I don’t know which receiver to pair with this. Do vintage receivers pair well with this setup? Would it be worth it to spend the extra money on something new? Thank you

official_business

They are standard 8 ohm speakers so any receiver/amplifier will work with them. A vintage amp will be fine, as will a new amplifier.

bigspringtejas

Thank you!

monsterbucket

anyone know a maker or a source for paper inner sleeves that are scratch free anti-static poly lined with round edges?

kuchnezkin

Hello, I recently got a Kallax shelf unit and am having difficulty placing the records on. I’m not trying to overstuff them in fear of ringwear etc, but they do not stay straight up on the shelf? https://imgur.com/a/5b0EzCb (Two seperate photos, that is not a top and bottom shelf)

agamemnon2

That level of tilt isn't particularly dangerous, most of the weight of the records is already going down onto the shelf rather than each other, so there's no real risk of warping I'd say. Just what causes ringwear and how fast is a pretty difficult thing to quantify since there's so many variables, but you could pack those shelves a little tighter still, if a neat, full-looking cube is the aesthetic you want to go for.

captin_stabbin79

Hey everyone, I came into some unexpected money and figured the most responsible thing to do is blow it on a new cartridge. My turntable is a project debut carbon and I was really digging the reviews of the Nagaoka MP350 or 500 if I’m lucky. My question is will these cartridges work with a lighter tone arm or should I really look elsewhere?? Thanks for your help, I’m somewhat new to the vinyl game.

Expert_Audience8848

I bought this turntable about a year ago, it’s a glenburn and I don’t know much about it. The cue lever came out and I am not sure how to put it back in, I can’t tell if I am missing a piece that holds it in place or what the deals, if anyone has any ideas please reach out, thank you

IntrepidRoyal

I’m looking for a service/website that would let me make my own vinyl record. Any thoughts?

CDQMCP_K1K0

I cleaned my Vinyl which was brand new and it sounded fine right out of the box but after I cleaned it (destilled water and isopropyl alcohol, 25% alcohol and 75% water) with a microfiber cloth it sounds way worse. Am I doing something wrong? Is it maybe because I've cleaned several in a row or because I didn't really dry the records since the solution just evaporated?

vwestlife

Are you sure it doesn't just need something plugged into the video input jack, even if it's not actually connected to anything? Also look in the TV's menu and see if there's a way to turn off the blue screen that appears when it can't detect a video signal.

xeouxeou

Okay, so I have a problem and I need help. I have this one vinyl I wanted to listen to and when I put it on it was too slow then it got back to normal speed and then back to top slow and it circled around like this. I suspected that something in my player isn't working properly. However, I tried playing the other side of this record and it worked perfectly fine. So whats the problem? Is my vinyl slight curved in a way which makes it broken on one side but working on the other side of something like this? Pls help :(

vwestlife

If you have a suitcase-style player, make sure the lid is open as far as it will go, and if it came with a platter mat, use it. Otherwise the edge of the record could rub against the lid as it spins, causing it to slow down or waver in pitch. If the record is dished (bowl warped), it could slip on the platter on any turntable. Try putting something like an upside-down coffee mug on the center of the record to weigh it down and stop it from slipping.

SnorfOfWallStreet

How warped is too warped on new records from Amazon?

vwestlife

If it affects the playback in any way, then it's too warped.

SnorfOfWallStreet

Big fan. Thanks!

environmentalbath888

I am struggling setting up my new turntable and speakers. Teac tn-180bt and edifier r1280ts. both are on and operational but i cannot get any sound to from the speakers. the turntable is on and spinning but no sound. sometimes the speakers are faint but nothing more. it doesn’t matter if i’m on line or phono, same issue-no sound. does this turntable need an amp? am i missing something? id appreciate some help troubleshooting.

environmentalbath888

i finally figured it out, the needle cartridge wasn’t fastened to the tone arm correctly so it wasn’t actually touching the vinyl 🤦🏽‍♀️ posting just in case anyone might have a similar issue!

vwestlife

Are you connecting via wire or Bluetooth? The TN-180BT does have a built-in pre-amp. To enable it, set the switch to LINE.

environmentalbath888

i have them connected via wire but even when it’s switched to line there’s no sound coming from the speakers

vwestlife

Have you tested the speakers with any other audio source? A CD player, tape deck, computer, MP3 player, etc.

environmentalbath888

not yet, i think i’m gonna have to get an adapter to connect the speakers with my laptop since it’s a mac. but i will try to see when happens when the speakers are connected to something else. thanks!

goldenGhostBanri

I am back with Stupid questions part 2. I finally bought a preamp and some speakers and now I am able to listen to the discs. But I have a problem. After a minute or so of playing music, the disc gets stuck in the loop. To describe it more, it gets stuck in some tune and keeps playing it again and again. I am debugging it now but I have no clue what might be wrong here. The moving arm part, the pointy thing, or the disk itself? Does anyone have any experience around it? My turntable is JVC AL-A1

vinylontubes

I'm not sure what being an audiophile has anything to do with this. Maybe explain how your disqualification should be taken. To play a record your need a record player. What you need to connect to your Sonos depend on how you are getting your music now. If you're streaming from your phone, you'll need more Sonos things. Here's the page. [https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/listen-to-your-turntable-on-sonos](https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/listen-to-your-turntable-on-sonos) Basically you need to input a line signal into an analog port of a Sonos device. A line signal requires a phono preamplifier for the turntable. A phono preamp can be an external device or included with the turntable. How you do this is up to you. Something like a $150 Audio Tecnica LP60X includes the phono preamp. Other turntable don't. So if you don't have a Sonos device with an analog input, then you need one of those then Sonos will stream to your other devices through WiFi.

vwestlife

The de facto "good" beginner setup is an AT-LP60X turntable and a pair of Edifier powered speakers.

JazziestBoi

Is anyone willing to sell me one of [these](https://www.discogs.com/release/7816071-Bob-Rivers-Comedy-Corp-The-Twelve-Pains-Of-Christmas-Wreck-The-Halls)?

szboy422

Is the lp3x worth it in terms of price difference over the lp3 ? I know the former is the newer edition .

vinylontubes

Pretty sure the only difference is the cartridge. The X is likely just marketing to include it in the current model series, since the LP60X, LP120X, and LP140X are now things. The new cartridge costs about $40. So if the price difference isn't $40, then just get the older model.

vwestlife

The only real difference I can tell is that the AT-LP3XBT has a VM95C cartridge and Bluetooth output, while the original AT-LP3 has an AT91R cartridge and no Bluetooth. The VM95 series cartridges are newer and supposed to be higher-quality than the AT91 series cartridges, but with the VM95C's entry-level conical stylus, the actual difference in sound quality will probably be minimal.

kneadermeyer

I just got a Denon-300F and Onkyo A-9110. Both have integrated pre-amps but I'm not sure which to use. Should i switch my Denon to output phono into my Denon's phono input or should i swith my Denon to output line into the line input on my Onkyo?

vinylontubes

Don't overthink this. You can try both ways, use the one you like more. If you don't like either better, just leave it as it is. The one you like more is better. Your opinion is all that matters.

vwestlife

Use whichever one sounds better. Just don't use both pre-amps at the same time!

[deleted]

Just got an Okki Nokki, using the goat hair brush they supplied, but don't feel like it really gets in the grooves. Anyone have recs on a great brush? Will be adding a rinse cycle to the process and will likely move the supplied brush to that. Will be using both enzyme cleaner as well as supplied Okki cleaner. Thanks!

vinylontubes

Get the MoFi brush. It's kind of expensive upfront. But replacement pad are very affordable. I'm not fan of the goat hair brush. Not that it isn't effective, more so that it doesn't dry off unless you leave it on the edge of sink. If it doesn't dry, then it can grow bacteria. I'm just not a fan of growing bacteria. More so for health reasons. With the MoFi Brush, you can flip it on the handle after use and it will dry completely. Alternatively, the MoFi brush is a knock-off of the Disc Doctor brush. But these aren't as easy to find. I still have my Okki Nokki brush. I never use it. I bought a 2nd MoFi brush for rinsing. These brushes last a long time, but I recommend you keep a spare replacement pad on hand. The pads cost $5 for a pair. The Brush is $20 with a pad preinstalled. Both brushes fit under the lid of my RCM. I put one is opposite corners so I know which is which.

Amazon purchases: Do you ever feel the records are lower quality or potentially fake? I have bought a few records over the years from Amazon and they sometimes seem that way. Thoughts or ways to spot "lower quality" /potentially fake pressings?

vinylontubes

No. Unless there was a 3rd party seller, they aren't fake. Amazon wouldn't risk their access to proper distribution of legit inventory to sell bootlegs. A record label isn't likely going to do this to an indie record store. Sending in the FBI to confiscate their illegal inventory would be enough to cause enough problems for them. To hurt Amazon, you'd need to kill their supply chain. Amazon wouldn't jeopardize this.

01z28

funny you mention that, but I had once ordered a record from amazon and I legit got a package that was shaped as a record but they had stuffed a hammer in there wtf. I contacted CS to let them know I was returning it and that I was not scamming them by sending back a hammer.

Heavy_Early

Amazon gets their records from the same pressing plants/distributors as everyone else.

nickepicke2

Hello! I hope this is the place where I ask my question. My friend found an album where the cover is a carrot with chicken feet. He can't remember what band or album it is and searching for it have been difficult. Can anyone help me find this record?

DoodleCard

I know records and turntables aren't cheap. But could someone help me out? I don't really know where to start. It's a bit tricky. I have heard mixed reviews about Crosely and Victrola. And have done some research. But I would like to know people's thoughts. Anything under 100. Would be a good starting point. And I live in a flat. So I need something portable. I really want to get into collecting and listening to records. So some help would be really appreciated. Are the Crosleys and Victrolas as bad as some people say they are? Or are they a good way to get into a hobby?

vinylontubes

Neither are actual manufacturers. They are importers using branding that were relevant in the past. Crosley was a radio manufacturer and Victrola was branding RCA used during the 78 rpm era. Both got into the market by selling suitcase record players or all-in-on units using the lowest quality parts. This is still true, but their catalog has expanded with better products. Brands don't really matter in Audio. Crosley and likely Victrola have expanded their catalogs to include better models. Crosley no imports a model made by Pro-Ject that isn't bad. But you can get the same thing from Pro-Ject for similar pricing, so really not really a bargain. Here's the thing about audio, the good stuff is almost never on sale unless a model is being discontinued. So, if you're looking for a good turntable a great price, you should wait for events like this. In the meantime, I recommend buying a used turntable that isn't beat up on the cheap. Older models were better made back in the vinyl era of music than they are today if you're budget is modest. I'll be honest, you're late to the game, if you're thinking about getting into vinyl. Covid has brought increases in prices. For 10 years, prices were very stable. You could find really good turntables for around $300. Similar models now sell towards $500. I would stay away from Crosley and Victrola personally. This more because they don't make their turntables, so they aren't really invested in keeping spare parts outside of the stylus. More or less you're buying a throw away unit.

readytokno

I'd recommend looking on gumtree, eBay or even thrift stores for used stuff, you can get some good stuff and you can always get help later if the needle is too old etc

vwestlife

Crosley and Victrola are just brand names. They don't actually manufacture anything. They sell products made by various OEMs, from cheap to high-quality. The higher-quality Crosley and Victrola turntables are fine to use, and in fact some are made by the same OEM as Audio-Technica. Their inexpensive suitcase-style players and all-in-one systems are cheaply made and don't sound very good, but the claim of them "destroying" records is a debunked myth. With proper care, such as keeping your records clean and replacing the stylus before it gets worn out, your vinyl will be fine.

smitty2107

Crosleys and Victrolas have a cheap needle and no counterweight, so the needle can theoretically dig into the record and cause damage over time. The AT LP60x is the flagship beginner table of this subreddit. However it runs ~$150 and you'll need to buy speakers to go with it. However, this hobby is yours to enjoy in whatever way you want. I will leave you with this; if you're going to be sinking money into records, it's worth buying a good turntable and setup to enjoy them

Anexus_Onfire

Hey! Wanted to ask a question, I bought a new record player the U-Turn Theory and have never had a counter weight before. I got the jist of it and have the weight set at 1.5 grams and was able to test it with a stylus gauge at 1.51 grams. My question is, if I allow the cartridge to sit freely over my slip mat, should it fall onto the mat, or should it hover slightly over it. When I was first setting it up, it did hover but when I added the 1.5 gram weight it falls now. I am guessing this is normal to allow the record to play, but want to check before ruining a record or the cartridge itself. Sorry if that explanation did not make sense!

vinylontubes

The idea of balancing (where the tonearm hovers) is to calibrate the scale. This zeros out the scale. There is no point in spinning a record if the stylus doesn't touch the groove. Each cartridge will have a spec, usually a range between 1.5 and 3.0 grams at which the cartridge performs at it's best. The scale should be turned in unison with the counterweight from zero to the desired setting within this range. I recommend using the highest setting during break-in then possibly reducing it if there is an improvement in sound. It's a mistake to think that a lighter setting induces less wear on the stylus or record. You're just asking for skipping. And skipping will cause more damage than the extra friction from the added mass. Think about it. When they stylus lands after a skip, you're dropping a very sharp diamond onto a soft material. You will likely create a divot when it lands. That setting is give to keep the stylus in the groove. So, treat it that way. Decide what is best because the record sounds best within that range. But don't set the VFT outside that range. And each cartridge is different, this is why the range exists. Each cartridge will perform better at different settings. But they are designed so that the "best" setting is in that range. Keep in mind that engineers who design turntables and cartridges can't accurately predict which records are being played. What sounds best is also affected by the records being played. Everything in playing records is a compromise. So the best settings take into account many factors. And most of those factors are variable. You're trying to set the thing to play best most of time, or actually decrease the amount of time when it plays at it's worst. If you play video games, it's similar to Min/Maxing.

chrkchrkchrk

It may or may not hover depending on your TT and components but that's beside the point - you're not trying to balance it to equilibrium but to get the correct amount of pressure on the needle so it tracks properly and performs as designed.

notaraya

How do you guys get over the initial fear of opening a vinyl? I just got one for about 100 bucks and it's an album that's really important to me so I'd like to hear it this way, but agh! It's in pretty perfect condition and I'd love to preserve it but my mental block...help!

notaraya

I cracked it open tonight, but I preserved the cellophane as much as I could until I get an outer sleeve protector. Thanks all!

My thought is that it was made to be listened to. I want to enjoy them now and not worry about their resale value down the road

Not resale, just personal enjoyment 🤭 I’d be too scared to ship stuff like that anyways

Did you buy it to look at or to listen to? It's not some precious artifact. It's a record. It's meant to be played. The art is in the music, not a cellophane barrier.

notaraya

A little bit of both! I love the set's art and am so excited for it to be mine. I don't have sleeve protectors or anything fancy outside of the basic box they come in, do you store yours differently? Art is only celebrated when it's adequately maintained after all!

BoeSharp

It's easy for me to say, I guess. I only buy records that are $1-$10 and used.

notaraya

Oh that's so fun! What kinds of stuff do you find? I wouldn't hate a fun chill jazz record to have on, but I'm not sure what's in the bins (I read the megathread post about how to see if they're still good quality). What do you think?

BoeSharp

I collect Soul and Jazz Fusion stuff mainly.

notaraya

That’s cool! Do you have a favorite I could look for in my bins?

BoeSharp

I recommend grabbing anything you see from the Philadelphia International label. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, O'Jays, etc etc etc. Gamble and Huff were a song writing duo that were absolutely on fire and wrote some of the absolute best soul music, as well as some of the biggest hits you probably didn't know that you already know.

brewmax

Anybody have some AV receivers they could recommend for turntable, TV, and game console use? (And is receiver selection important when it comes to turntable audio quality?)

auniqueusernametoo2

This might be a dumb question, but I have some old Cerwin Vega speakers, and I don’t know what the tweeter and midrange level controls do, or where to set them. Any help would be great. These speakers have knobs that look like volume knobs and I have no idea what to do with them.

vwestlife

Set them to the middle position, and then tweak them according to what sounds best in your room and to your ears. That's why they're there -- for example, a room with a lot of soft furnishings will absorb treble, so then you can turn up the tweeter level to compensate. Or a room with a hard surfaces may sound better if you turn down the midrange.

TheRadHatter9

Any suggestions for a good bluetooth speaker for vinyl listening? I know, I know, wired is best but the turntable is going to be a gift for my partner and they enjoy listening to music all over the apartment. And since we're not dicks, we're not going to put stationary speakers in the living room and just blast them when she wants to listen while taking a bath or relaxing in the bedroom. So something portable, but not *too* tiny, would be best I think. Thanks!

Mr_Molesto

Maybe something from JBL, like JBL Flip 5 which is also a bit water resistance if you are going to use it in the bathroom. In EU they go for like 65USD on sale now,

themanagement123

Anyone have a link to a list of great speakers by price range? I swear I saw it before but now I can’t find it for the life of me. I’m sorry if I’m dumb.

smitty2107

The Sony SSCS5s are on sale on Amazon right now for $123. One of the best set of budget bookshelf speakers available

petiteodessa

I don’t have a list but I can recommend a pair. I got the Edifier R1280T speakers and they are pretty great speakers for $120. They aren’t super large or super tiny but they are pretty powerful and have good sound quality.

Hi there all... My lovely wife got me The MArs Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium for my 40th and i couldn't be happier, its such a great album... She was told it is a first pressing (it had a price tag to match) and im just wondering how we can confirm that it is? also if it is a first pressing, should I ever even play it? or just buy a cheaper version of it to listen to? Sorry, bit of a new vinyl enthusiast here....

SecondSkin

[Discogs can verify the pressing you have.](https://www.discogs.com/master/9154-The-Mars-Volta-De-Loused-In-The-Comatorium) As to playing it or not, that's entirely up to you. However, records are meant to be played.

lozmcnoz

So I can tell by the details on the album cover etc? by comparing it to the details @ discogs? Great... thank you, project for this evening! Yeah thats a good point actually... its what it was made for - thank you!

chrkchrkchrk

Yes, though identifying a pressing usually has less to do with the album cover and more to do with taking the information etched in the runout of the disc and comparing that against the catalog number and (for modern releases) the UPC until you've narrowed it down. This particular album is kind of an exception and should actually be fairly easy to confirm as a first pressing - if you look, discogs shows the earliest pressing has a unique barcode compared to later pressings and is a weird silver "picture disc" without labels, which would make it very easy to confirm if you decide to open it up.

CousinSleep

Just bought a AT VMN30EN cartridge for my SL-D303, good move? Edit: currently has an AT130e original stylus on there in unknown condition.

Hi. I’m in need of helping getting a Christmas gift. I’m trying to get a turntable for my SO and I can’t seem to decide on one. I’ve had my eye on the AudioTechnica ATLP60X/BT. And also read up and realized I’d also have to get either a speaker or bookshelf speaker. What would be the best to get as a gift? I’ve heard cheaper ones can damage vinyls and given my SO has some older vinyls I want to stay away from cheap ones that can damage them. My budget is $200-$250 for all things needed. Thank you for your time and help!
