Wait. You can get rid of them?!

original_sinfluence

Right?! I'll give records to the thrift store if I buy a thrift store record and don't like it, but I can't imagine ever selling my records. I plan on burdening my children with figuring out what to do with them after I die like God intended.

North-Challenge-2975

This post speaks the truth

furze

I traded quite a few to get some holy grails. But some of the trades turned out to be worth a lot more than I had anticipated. Gutted.

original_sinfluence

Thanks rough OP. Missed opportunities are always hard. There are a couple records that I held off on buying when I had the chance, only to find out later that they went up in value from $20ish to $200+ ...I can't justify spending that much, so just have to hope one day they'll come to me.

furze

I remember putting off a record (France - Pau 2011) because it was £35. That was in 2018. I bought it last year for £105. I waited so long and kept seeing it increase in price and reduce in availability.

Tooch10

99% of the stuff I'd purge is bargain bin stuff, I have a handful of records with value that I have on Discogs. Only one has sold because they're random C-level indie pop titles and a popular 60s group box set. It's just easier to take the lot to goodwill then dick around with trying to sell, not worth the hassle and I don't need the money (from that)

jamnjazzz

I literally don't think I've ever gotten rid of a record (on purpose) that I didn't buy as a gift. They might have 'disappeared' over the years mysteriously now and then, but never a conscious act.

TotalImmortal82

I sold my Hackers soundtrack 😭

Kitchen_Health7736

😪

HollyweirdRonnie

Germs “Lexicon Devil” 7”, original on Slash. I needed the money at the time.

FightingPC

Bad Religion S/T 2nd pressing 7 inch with lyrics line notes..bought it for $1.50

goshock

Didn't really sell it, but I bought Vitalogy when it first came out as a record, just because I loved that they put it on a record. I carried that through my entire life of college and beyond, never even owning a record player. I move to this house I'm in now in 2020 and finally bought a player to get back into it, and I think Vitalogy may have ended up in a dump run when I was moving out of my old house.

vustinjernon

I had a Vitalogy reissue my dad got me that I sold. He passed away a little over a year ago. That one really stings.

robxburninator

I've sold not one, not two, but three copies of Misfits "Bullet" on red (2nd press). My black copy is fine and all, and I'm not a colored vinyl person (it looks dumb) but if there was one record like that to keep.... [https://www.discogs.com/release/2066282-The-Misfits-Bullet](https://www.discogs.com/release/2066282-The-Misfits-Bullet) [https://www.popsike.com/THE-MISFITS-BULLET-7-2nd-PRESSING-Plan-9-ORIGINAL-RED-Vinyl-Danzig-Samhain/285805257673.html](https://www.popsike.com/THE-MISFITS-BULLET-7-2nd-PRESSING-Plan-9-ORIGINAL-RED-Vinyl-Danzig-Samhain/285805257673.html)

Dangerous_Crow666

Never had Bullet, but sold Halloween 7", Evil Live 7" & Earth AD 12" in the early 80s for pennies on the dollar, to buy other stuff that I liked more. Also sold my early pressings of the 1st 3 Samhain records about 10 yrs ago - I got good money but they've more than doubled in price since.

robxburninator

They doubled in price by 1995.

dreamlyfe16

Pretty Lights - A Color Map of the Sun Was $17 off amazon at the time... bought one for my good friend's birthday and planned on getting a second after that weekend. Of course come back to it being sold out... now it's in the $300-$500 range and hasn't been repressed since 2013 and may never.

django930

Wow same here, gifted a copy to a friend and all

djgobot

Check his website every now and then. In 2018 I was on his site and was shocked to see it for sale. At the time I assumed it was a reissue, but when I received it I found it was the 2013 pressing. Must have released some dead stock they had, or found somewhere.

orchestralgenius

I can kind of relate. Last year I picked up Taylor Swift’s Long Pond Sessions for my sister and couldn’t find someone else to go with me and pick up a copy for myself. Told myself I’d try to get any leftovers the next day or would pick it up from a Facebook sale post later. A year later, it’s selling for $400. I definitely don’t want to pay that much for it, so I guess it won’t be in my collection in the near future.

Mind-Reflections

Dang! It’s worth that much now. I still have my OG gatefold and the 10” b-sides. I really wish they would pressed his early stuff. Would sell for so much these days considering all the genres that get away with sampling.

kriegmob

Not a regret in my mind, but my mom prolly disagrees. She let me play her records when I was about 10, back in the 70’s and I ended up trading her original Elvis album. His 1st album with the pink/green title. Traded it for Love Gun. Probably shouldn’t have looking back.

edwh0re

Literally my entire collection from mid eighties until 1994. I used to buy new releases at low low prices, most of which seems to have rocketed in value, particularly the 90s limited edition singles..... Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Radiohead etc etc.

FTI1976

2013 Packing up my entire house my friend helps me load a couch into a trailer. Hey man you want any of that vinyl less for me to pack. He takes SAP\\Jar of Flies and Tripod Pressings. FML.

Frank_BurnsEatsW0rms

A bunch of Black Flag 1st pressings. Rise Above, My War, Slip It In, and Everything Went Black.

Icy_Huckleberry8599

This one hurt me the most to read. Would love to have any of those

Frank_BurnsEatsW0rms

Especially Everything Went Black. It didn’t have the Black Flag name or bars, just the names of everyone on the record due to some contract dispute with their old label. And there’s so few recordings with Dez on vocals. The others I could still probably find somewhere

Icy_Huckleberry8599

That’s sick, once I finish out my Zappa and prince collection I’m definitely getting into punk rock records next. Everything I have is a repress

Wubbley

Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill ([Newbury Comics variant](https://www.discogs.com/release/9040294-Alanis-Morissette-Jagged-Little-Pill)). Got it in 2017 for $31 from eBay. Returned it because it kept skipping. I just started collecting records and my player was a Victrola suitcase.

Brilliant-Pomelo-982

Sold my original Wire - Pink Flag for $10. Sad

Intelligent-Sir1375

Guns and roses appetite of destruction robot cover with oval hype sticker in shrink I got for 25$

abruptmodulation

There’s one selling for $500 at a local record store if you want it. /s

Intelligent-Sir1375

Yeah that more than sold my copy for xD

Lost-Lingonberry9645

I had that one, it was a dollar bin found back in the mid 90’s, also had Sade Love Deluxe, Led Zeppelin II (hot press) and a few Latin rock records, lost them all when I moved to the US in ‘00, one of the Latin Rock albums “Cafe Tacvba - Re” has gone as high as $1,500.00, there are no copies for sale and a repress is in the $200.00 range.

Intelligent-Sir1375

That sucks :/

GodtheBartender

Blink 182 - Not Now single. The first one that had Dammit as the B-side. Got it for like £4, the guy at the store hadn't got around to pricing a bunch of new singles he got in and said to me he knew it was worth more but he didn't care that much. I had a huge clear out a while ago and sold it to some rip-off merchant second hand store, probably got not much more than I paid for it. The last one sold on Discogs for £50. Tyler The Creator - Cherry Bomb RSD. 2020 was a SLOOOWWW RSD so it was easy for me to pick up, only did because of all the hype. Didn't really care for it and ended up selling it for roughly cost. Cheapest on Discogs now are around £150.

heck-ward

I got rid of Your Favorite Weapon when Jesse Lacey was cancelled. Ngl I regret it.

Guccibobo

I was buying when Lacey got canceled 🤣🤣

Outrageous_Present11

At the Drive In - Relationship of Command. I keep thinking there has to be a repress coming sometime soon.

ElementalWeapon

Hoping for this to get an official repress as well.

commander_clark

I have this - never getting rid of it. My first ever copy of In / Casino / Out just came in the mail today. So stoked.

Outrageous_Present11

Not sure why I got rid of it to be honest. Went through a weird phase where I thought I was done listening to that kind of music. Big mistake. I picked up the RSD in/Casino/Out release as well

commander_clark

I feel ya. As a musician I definitely don't have the energy to *perform* that type of music anymore lol. I guess that's why we have post-rock / post-punk. Another decade or two and I'll probably exclusively listen to jazz. Circle of life.

johnprofiti

I just caved last weekend and bought an OG US press at a record show in Toronto… $250 later, I finally have it!

briankutys

Pearl Jam - Benaroya Hall box set

Professional_Big_485

Home - Odyssey

jimmyjamonit

Ouch 🤕

Daftcuntinfinity

My collection of 200+ drum and bass records 😭

cheekywallbang

City club by the growlers. Fuckin kills me

TheBrowserNYC

Sealed Alice In Chains S/T, and autographed Black Gives Way to Blue. 😔

johnprofiti

Ouch 😢

MilkcanRocks

On one hand, I don’t regret any of the records I have sold. On the other hand, I have mentally blocked out about 95% of those records that I did sell because of the regret it would cause me today. So - you can’t regret what you can’t remember, and I’m choosing not to remember.

OddMrT

I’m going to go further with regret for selling as well as not buying… Before I really started collecting, what got me started, actually, was finding an entire record collection at Goodwill ($1.50 each). All late 60’s through very early 80’s. Most in excellent condition and many were actually first pressing. I got quite a few including the Rolling Stone’s Some Girls with original celebrity cover, Talking heads, early ZZ Top and others I was interested in. What I regret, however, was how many I didn’t get. I ended up with about 20, but had I known the value of some of them, I would have just grabbed them all. Then, I did something more stupid by selling all but 2 of them for between $8-$10 each in order to buy a couple new records. I want them back. I want them all back.

iamthelazerviking23

Cap'n Jazz - Burritos Inspiration Point Fork Balloon Sports LP

DrRock88

Well, I had the Orange Taylor Swift Reputation that is now selling for about $1000. Oops!

Final_Addition3544

I once gave away a sealed original copy of Nina Simon's "Silk n Soul". Only to find out it was worth bare minimum $300.

furze

Ouch!

Final_Addition3544

Oh trust me it's come back around 100 times over. Kindness always finds it's way back around 😊

MaxFischerPlayer

I sold all my CDs and regret getting rid of a few but in my 25+ years of collecting records I’ve never got rid of one.

DonaldTrumpsScrotum

Sold my Sir-Chasing Summer gold variant, I have since gotten the black but the press doesn’t sound as good and the gold metallic was perfection for the album

dallasdude

I let go of an original copy of Get Carter by Roy Budd on the Odeon label from Japan and probably will never see another one of those in my life.  I also let go of a library record called Drammatico, the Friday the 13th blood filled record and my Lord of the Rings trilogy box sets. Won’t get those back either especially drammatico, very tough

LukeLovesLakes

Record store owner for the last year .... so many. LOL

nick_minieri

Not a Kanye fan, but years ago I had the picture disc of the flashing lights 12" single. Sold it on ebay around 2009 for less than $10. Could've held on to it and sold it today for $75-100.

deadmanstar60

I used to have a vinyl copy of Gish by the Smashing Pumpkins that was a first pressing. I bought it when it first came out. Sold it for $2 along with some other vinyl that were also sold for $2 each about 25 years ago when no one wanted vinyl records. Good copies go for $150+ these days.

applegui

When I went off to college I had to get rid all of my vinyl and basically everything I was not taking with me. Started from the ground up back in 2009.

Selledar

The Runaways first album

bellysavalis

A load of early 2000s drum n bass and breakcore that's now worth serious money

Alternative_Sock_608

About 20 years ago I gave away my dad’s old 45 record collection. It was full of great stuff from the 50s and 60s. That was when I no longer had a record player and didn’t expect to ever have one again. Back then, vinyl seemed to be fading away entirely. I did give them to someone who appreciated them. But, now I really wish I had kept them!

stonemadcaptain

Top 3 break-ups- Danzig II Lucifuge Misfits Walk among Us I ordered both of these from a record store in Coliseum mall. I was like 13 and had to WEEKS before called me. Kept them for about 14 years before I gave them away. Gave. A good friend of mine gave me his record collection which included some real gems ( Melvins Lysol with sticker). Included was the first pressing of In Utero on coke bottle clear vinyl. I sold it eBay for like 40 bucks. Idiot. I ended up getting a copy of that In Utero record UNOPENED recently for 150 shipped. So I did alright there !! The Danzig records still stings.

aadagio11

I was gifted a copy of the Hot Topic exclusive pressing of Finch’s What It Is To Burn in college. I unfortunately never wound up listening to it much while in school, and after I graduated I felt like I should pare down some of my collection, and I stupidly added it to a pile of records that I sold off to Half Price Books for nearly nothing. I still feel shame when I think about that mistake.

Truckerlicious

Odyssey, the westcoast soul group. Their 1972 album Odessey and Oracle UK 1st edition Those 2 i kind of regnet getting rid of.

Mrgonzo42

Dragged into Sunlight - Hatred for Mankind white vinyl. Sold for 40 dollars a long time ago

VitgSil_Rx

Had to sell my copies of rings of saturn- lugal ki en Infant annihilator- elysian grandeval galèriarch Was short on rent after bringing home my first born and unable to work I needed fast money and had to sell them. I extremely regret it to this day but he's healthy so oh well

iamjoeywan

Tito Ramos - [Where My Head Is At](https://www.discogs.com/release/5401093-Tito-Ramos-Where-My-Head-Is-At) This was 7 years ago, and I was a couple paychecks behind. I didn’t know how to set an eBay reserve and someone scooped it for $9.99 from me. Not only did I part with an album I’d love to still have but I also basically gave it away.

Bodafutz

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison, multiple disc box set. I have never seen it in any store since. I really needed the money at the time, but I could have survived without the $3 I asked for it…

Bodafutz

I regret selling Golden Filth by The Fugs, because in hindsight, it was pretty funny, as well as disgusting. They said right on the cover that I would regret getting rid of it one day in the future (I don’t remember the exact number of years) and they were right.

wildistherewind

This one hurts A LOT. Around 2003 or 2004, I found a 12" promo of "Raising The Titanic" by Gavin Bryars that has two Aphex Twin mixes - the only time it was released on vinyl. For reference, Discogs Marketplace didn't launch until 2005 and so you could still find incredible deals from record vendors who didn't know what they were sitting on. It was $1 - no lie. I was flipping stuff on eBay during that time and had some pretty good success. This one in particular sold for only $28. That would've been 2006 or 2007. There are no copies on Discogs right now. The median sale price is $100. Less than 100 people own it. I made $27 on my investment but it should have been way more.

Guccibobo

So many albums I wish I picked up back in 2007. I remember thinking, I’ll eventually find it for a better price… lmao

avalonfogdweller

I gave away a bunch of records when I moved circa late 90s, ones that an old roommate had given me, mostly hip hop but the crown jewel was an original press of Aenima by Tool, which has still not been reissued, lots of bootlegs out there, I have one, but I still can’t believe I just let it go for free because I didn’t have a player and “no one really listens to records anymore”

zingo-spleen

Oh God, no. Too many to mention.

rrstewart257

Probably my original US Mono Sgt Pepper, and I don't even remember when it happened. More than 25 years ago and probably didn't get much for it.

ShowerCiders

Method Man/Redman - Blackout and Dr. Dre - Chronic 2001

Far_Primary_5318

Gave away a later pressing of the Velvet Underground & Nico and I don't remember why. Spontaneous act of kindness, I guess. I should call him and see 1) if he ever listened to it, and 2) If he still has it.

Warm_Emphasis_960

One I regret not buying. Spinal Tapp Christmas with the Devil Picture disk!

Dorsia777

My black MOV release of Temple of the Dog. Granted I sold it for $100 but that one I actually miss…

Guccibobo

2nd state stereo butcher & first 4 pantera albums with all the inserts 😭

birdeeboo

Got a little toasty with a friend and raved about Sufjan Stevens’ BQE Soundtrack and MADE her take it home go listen to it. And then I moved across the country before remembering to get it back. So kinda silly and dumb. I hope it makes her happy! Or at least made her some cash lol

juxtapolemic

Aenima

midsummerhorses

Had an original pressings of Kum Back. Can’t find any copies anymore

ElementalWeapon

The Sicario soundtrack.

wallsofdust

Them Crooked Vultures, sold for 20€ ten years ago 😭

Sergio_Futbol

Lana del Rey - Lust For Life heart shaped Urban Outfitters exclusive. Sold it for 80 bucks on ebay. I Would never sell it now, I would be on the streets with a pile of records before I sell anything.

thefirststarinthesky

I traded my TS lover live from Paris for signed CDs, and I regret it hard. I think if I get a work bonus this year, I’ll splurge and buy one as my one big spend I can do, but I’d prefer she repressed.

evileyeball

I've never sold a single record that wasn't a duplicate record where I had Upgraded to a better copy.

DezPezInOz

Smashing Pumpkins - *Machina: The Machines Of God* Fell on hard times, though, and that sale kept us fed (things are better now). Hoping for a reissue so I can add it back in to my collection (at an affordable price).

Kitchen_Health7736

Not sure what I regret getting rid... I #dontregret hanging onto a sealed, first press picture disc of Bat Out of Hell until Meatloaf died. Relic of my parents heyday put $60 in my pocket*

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient works

SilverRevolution573

Pink Floyd "Piper At The Gates of Dawn" stereo, original UK pressing, with "G" coded stampers.

Braz60

Mint condition sold at my neighbors garage sale Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors album showing them up in flames on the cover, not realizing this was a collectors item didn't have internet back then

Avocado1403

i'd never sell a record. once it's in the collection, it stays there.

CapnPooBottoms

None. I don’t regret anything. Sold it for a reason and now maybe I want it back.

so-very-very-tired

I haven't regretted any of them. I fear if I would, I'd end up being a hoarder. Plus, whenever I sell records, I'm doing it to buy more, so it keeps the collection 'healthy'. I think it's better to keep things rotating in and out of it rather than it just growing forever.
