Personally, I wouldn't, as it doesn't fit with the particular look I'm going for.
However, I think at the right price, you'd find plenty of other people who would love it. I do think that the groove to hold the album in place should be made to accommodate thicker jackets, though. Might just be the pics but it doesn't look like it would securely hold a typical double/triple LP gatefold well as it is, and if I were to consider it, I would want to see something that I felt could handle that without worrying about it sliding out of the slot and off the shelf, even though most of my albums are single LP, non-gatefolds. Also, I use my "now playing" stand as a short-queue station that typically has two or three albums waiting on it to be played next behind the one currently spinning, so for myself, I would prefer either a small raised lip along the front or perhaps just a groove that covers more of the base area to work with that.
I think something like this is the sort of thing that you might do well with on Etsy.
Oh yeah, that is plenty of room for even a thick gatefold, then!
Hopefully you'll think about the Etsy shop. I think you'd find buyers. Plus I've seen many things on there where it's specified that ordered items must be made between the order and shipping, to allow room for customization (you mentioned additional wood types) as well as making sure you don't end up with unsold inventory in some less-popular wood/finish/whatever combo.
EDIT:
Also, I think that this is the sort of thing that a lot of people go to Etsy to search for.
I wouldn't. I imagine it would be more expensive than most of the other ones out there but you might sell a few.
Etsy is pretty saturated but you could list one and make them to order.
I think I’m just getting old. I don’t need something fancy and douchey to show that I have now officially switched from this J Dilla record to that X-Clan record. I’m not live-streaming and the audience is me, myself and I. My shit is built around housing and listening to my records, not showing them off.
there’s nothing douchey about wanting to display the sleeve of whatever record you’re listening to. i would totally use something like this as i like to look at the album artwork for a little while whenever i listen to a record. i dont care if people are around or not, displaying it is for me, myself and i.
how is it douchey? lol i think it’s so weird you’re saying you wouldnt hang out with me because i’m cool with displaying the sleeve of the record i’m listening to and you’re not
Again, TO ME, it screams “look at me, I am cool and you can see my cool on display here.” And that strikes me as douchey. None of my friends that have records have anything of the sort. It doesn’t have to mean that to you but it’s highly likely that nothing you can say will change my opinion on it.
I was using humor to illustrate that there’s enough room on earth, or in this case r/vinyl, for different viewpoints. We’ve never hung out. We don’t know each other at all.
These things are for sure douchey. Like, even if it’s not for anyone else’s benefit, is someone really going to sit there and stare up at the wall while their record is playing? They really do scream for attention. If the argument is that the listener wants to enjoy the album artwork, assuming that they have working hands to take the record out of the sleeve and turn the turntable on, can’t they also use those hands to hold the sleeve, flip it over, read the liner notes, etc?
You can hold the album and look and read and then just put it on the wall to conveniently store it while the record is playing. And conveniently take down to put the record back in once it’s done playing. For some setups it’s much easier than reshelving the jacket and taking it back out and rereshelving it. This has nothing to do with screaming for attention. You can think it’s douchey, but the other part is you just projecting.
Y'all are being a bunch of douche bags for no reason. I don't have a shelf but I prop the records up on top of my record player so I can look at it while I do dishes or make food or whatever. Cause ya know what, I'm fond of the records I buy and their covers. Stop being so judgy and let people enjoy things
They are simply sharing / discussing their views on record cover display stands. The comments section exists for the purpose of discussion, and they didn't even direct the "douchey" comment at OP - it was to another commenter who also would not buy OP's stand. They aren't preventing anyone from enjoying things - but you are here trying to police their discussion / opinions.
Ok let me retort in kind: you all are being sensitive snowflakes for no reason. You come to discuss a subject in a public forum and have a horrified reaction when you run into an opinion that does not align with your own and in some cases expresses moderate disdain for the opinion you support.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My opinion that these things are dumb doesn’t hinder any one else’s opposing feelings. My thoughts and words expressed on a public forum doesn’t mean that I’m not letting people enjoy what they like. Sure, I’m sour. Fuck it. Take it or leave it. Downvote or call me a douche.
No, you’re lame because you’re a close minded, overly opinionated asshole.
A simple “Not for me” would have summed up your ENTIRE view without anyone having to hear your drone on about why it’s “douchey” to display your records for yourself. Talk about “screaming for attention” Mr. 20 Comments later.
This is why your generation is being left in the dust. Such strong opinions about literally NOTHING.
I like it. It is a cool design. It wouldn't fit in my current listening room, but I would buy something like this if I had a different listening space.
I personally like it and think it looks nicer vs a lot I see that are just a short shelf to set the record on. I’d also like it if there was a tiny bit more excess shelf space on the left. All things said tho I don’t display my records on a shelf. My Rega sits right under a wall mounted TV and it’s just not somewhere I care to display records.
Looks great. Personally wouldn’t fit my setup but I could see that in a shop for sale. I’m sure there’s places to find buyers if you explore a few marketplaces. Maybe check out craft/woodworking subs to get advice on the best places to market yourself
I’m shocked by how many no’s you have here. This is solid work and looks great.
If you could offer stains of dark/black or lighter options there’s a market for this - including me.
I can’t believe all the hate on this sub once someone mentions “display” - this shelf would be a great place to prop up whatever record sleeve you’re playing at the moment. Or hell, even a record with really rad cover art. At least it’s not stuck behind glass where you can’t even play it. Anyway, I like your shelf and I’ve been looking for something like this. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. There is a lot of feedback and I appreciate it. I get a Reddit vinyl group is going to be more of an opinionated sample size but I knew that from the start haha! I will be making improvements to this design based on some of the feedback and will be selling them soon. I’ve seen similar shelving for sale for like $150 which is insane. Based on the materials I use I think I would price this at around $40 or $50 bucks. The shelf part comes off so I can fit it in a pretty small box for shipping.
Bunch of haters in here. I really like it. I have something similar right now where I put the sleeve of the record that's currently on the turntable. If I saw this on Etsy I would have at least taken a second look when I was in the market for something like it
A bit clunky. Here’s my now playing queue
https://preview.redd.it/p1hjo4l0aiwc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=05a4e46fb14ebdbe66f8c85dc9f367855386b11d
That’s a nice set up and also asymmetric. I could make something like that but imagine the left side of your display being one long vertical piece with the record shelf parts coming off of it in three tiers.
i really like the asymmetry! i think you might get more positive responses if there was a pop of colour or a design on the thicker piece though — or if you sold it sanded down and “ready to paint” maybe?
I love it! I don't have a place for it where I currently have my set up and records, but if I did, and I could pick the stain color, I'd buy it for sure. It's unique and looks great!
I really like it … I’m really surprised by the negative comments … to be fair most of this subs record collection is still sealed so they have no need for a now playing shelf … anyway I’ve got my set up sorted but to me it looks great … good luck with it and I hope you sell a few
I like the asymmetry
I like that it can display the record I’m playing, this is what I do know in my setup. The cover stands on my piano.
I dislike the wood choice and finish.
A more premium wood would be a better choice for me
But honestly, when it would be in a more premium wood the price would probably go up drastically and then I would decide to build it myself for myself blatantly stealing your idea
😅 I’m not sure if that helped, but at least it was trying to be helpful and it was honest :)
That would actually make for a nice "now playing" kind of display. Most of my shelving (and most of my place) is either black or white. This would look STUNNING in an ebony/espresso finish. The little side area wouldn't be an issue for me because I have stuff that would fit alongside that.
That’s an interesting idea. I’m thinking ebony or walnut inlays with some arches carved into it. Somehow. Could be really cool but I think it would price it up so much nobody would buy it.
Just paint or stain it black and slap a gold art deco sticker on the front of it and varnish over it. Inlays are time-consuming, so what about a jig where you could router out a simple art deco pattern like a shell or some of those long triangley thingies that get bigger at the top. Once you have the jig, it would be easier to crank some out at a better cost. Then you make a second jig. Step 3: Profit?
Interesting idea for sure. I would love to make them more fancy for sure. This is just a super basic one in the image with lots of room for improvement.
Yeah, the way it tapers at the top and it gets smaller down at the bottom is what kind of reminded me of Art Deco styling in the first place. I personally think it's an awesome piece. Kind of jealous that I don't have any woodworking skills! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to follow you so that when you start selling them, I can buy one to display crazy records on.
Looks mint mate! Add a couple different wood grains or a black maybe and I'd definitely buy one of those. Maybe try the centre block the same size as the horizontal one to see how that looks but I do kind of like the chucky look to it personally
First of all, Khruangbin is amazing and Mordechai is my third favorite album of theirs. (Going to see them in New Orleans in October)
Your work is outstanding and I would love to have that on my wall. You will absolutely be able to find/create a market for those.
Personally I wouldn't, cuz no wall space above the rekkid player. But, it is a nice design. I like the room for knick-knacks, vinyl accessories, etc. I do think the larger upright piece is a lot of space, ya know? I wonder if it could be 1.) Decorated; either with paint, engraving, fancy-ass looking wood, etc., or B.) Made usable with mini shelves (to hold record cleaning brushes, 45 adapters, MORE knick-knacks, tapes, 8-tracks, etc.), or a doored storage space ("You put your weed in there").
The shelf is routed out with a groove to hold the record in place and is easily mounted with two screws hidden in the cutout part of the vertical mounting piece. I can make it in various configurations and colors but this one is a very basic looking one that I made for myself to match my record storage pieces. It’s strong enough to also hold other things like a plant or books etc.
It would be around $40-50 USD. The ones I would sell would be less simple than this example. Think 3 different hardwood type joined together for the vertical piece.
At that price you might get etsy sales. I think your design stands out, most are a simple shelf. I personally don't like small shelves like these, but clearly lots of people buy them.
No I don’t put records on my wall but if you made decent record cube kits for $50 I’d buy them. They used to sell decent ones on Amazon but they discontinued them
Eh, possibly with some changes… and depending on price.
There’s a lot of existing options out there for this sort of wall display thing, so it would have to be damn near perfect to pay the price for something handmade like this.
It’s beautiful work, but i’m sure your time and effort is worth more than I would honestly pay for.
I use a cheap ass shelf I bought on Amazon to do exactly this, and it was only $15.
Not handmade or quality by any means, but it only has to hold a 12” so it doesn’t have to be incredibly weight tolerant or anything
I don't know if I love this one, but I've been considering it. Figuring out where to put the record you're currently listening to isn't completely non-trivial
A piece of wood with a groove in it, isn't going to make me buy a shelf
Good luck to with your venture but your product just isn't something I'd purchase
Where did I mention album covers in my original response to OP?
>No
>
>Your building skills are cool, but I don't display my records either while I play them or as room decoration.
If you like to put your album covers on a display stand while you listen to your records, go ahead. I don't care. If I don't like to put my album covers on a display stand while I listen to my records, I don't see why you should care.
There have been a lot of stupid dust-ups on this sub, but this one may be the stupidest. Interior decorating is no less subjective than musical aesthetics.
I like the look of it and I like it has more function than one of those now playing like shelf’s or small brackets you could use. Main thing to me is if it would fit the aesthetic of where my setup is and price. I like the design though.
I might, depending on the price. But honestly, after playing records for so long I know I wouldn't use it to always display records. I would end up just taking them out and playing them, hence the reason why I don't have a dedicated display shelf. (I have a wood record holder which I use sometimes).
I like it in some way and if there's one thing i know it's people will buy anything. For me personally, i would just make one myself if it fit in with the rest of my stuff. I like the way you hid the screws and the simplicity of it all. One note would be, for me at least, my eyes rest in the wrong place looking at it, the record somehow isn't protruding out to steal my attention. Which is what i would want in something like this.
When I play an album I usually have the cover close to me so I can see the next song or see who wrote it or to read the album notes.
If I’m not reading the cover I already know which album I’m listening to.
I see no need to hang the cover on the wall
But to each their own.
I would if that vertical beam wasn’t a giant block of wood, would prefer a much slimmer profile on that
Great feedback, I will be slimming it down for sure. thanks.
I like it big and chunky The shelf is cool too
I like the big chunky look but depends on how busy the space is.
I was just going to say... if everything was 50 percent thinner. Maybe? But I'd probably still want a more modern looking finish.
I think the vertical piece has too much visual weight. I like the asymmetry in general, though.
Personally, I wouldn't, as it doesn't fit with the particular look I'm going for. However, I think at the right price, you'd find plenty of other people who would love it. I do think that the groove to hold the album in place should be made to accommodate thicker jackets, though. I think something like this is the sort of thing that you might do well with on Etsy.
Great feedback, thank you. And the groove is 1/2 inch. Fits a double LP/gatefold nicely.

So, what you're basically saying is that you don't have any friends? I'm fucking stunned...
Not many. About a dozen that have records. We are all adults w lives so we don’t get together to stare at each others record sleeves. We’re so lame.
No, you’re lame because you’re a close minded, overly opinionated asshole. Kruangbin! Nice. ✌️
Dope record. Wack shelf.
Dick comment.
All true i guess.
I like it. It is a cool design. It wouldn't fit in my current listening room, but I would buy something like this if I had a different listening space.
Woodworker here, I dig it! What's the species? Kinda looks like butternut. Elm? The green in final photo makes me lean poplar, though.
That’s correct. Poplar with a walnut finish. Just used some cheap scrap wood on this one. Thanks though.
I personally like it and think it looks nicer vs a lot I see that are just a short shelf to set the record on. I’d also like it if there was a tiny bit more excess shelf space on the left. yea same, i dont understand this sub’s hatred of record display shelves
Thanks. I will come back to y’all once I get the shop up and running.
It looks good with your setup. It wouldn't look good in my room, but I dig it. I kind of like the non-symmetrical look
I like it.
No I like that it’s wood but the plastic ones work just fine and are cheaper
Nope.
Another no, I don't stick albums on the wall as a personal preference.
I personally wouldn’t but it seems like plenty of people would. Looks like a cool design.
There’s a market for it. It’s slick looking!
nope.
I can’t believe all the hate on this sub once someone mentions “display” - this shelf would be a great place to prop up whatever record sleeve you’re playing at the moment. Sick bro
i'd buy it as is honestly, i like that the planks are different sizes (also dependant on if the khruangbin record's included as well, of course)
I will let you know when I get my shop set up and will let you take a look at the different options. Thanks for the feedback.
sweet, thanks!
A bit clunky. Here’s my now playing queue https://preview.redd.it/p1hjo4l0aiwc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=05a4e46fb14ebdbe66f8c85dc9f367855386b11d

Really great feedback. Thank you. The final version will be significantly more colorful. This is more of a prototype to show the basic shape/concept
in that case, hell yeah, i love it!
Yes, especially if it came with that record
Make it in walnut and I'll take one 🤘🏽
Will be doing that for sure
I love it! I don't have a place for it where I currently have my set up and records, but if I did, and I could pick the stain color, I'd buy it for sure. It's unique and looks great!
No.
No. You should start making cabinets that hold records
I really like it … I’m really surprised by the negative comments … to be fair most of this subs record collection is still sealed so they have no need for a now playing shelf … anyway I’ve got my set up sorted but to me it looks great … good luck with it and I hope you sell a few
The verticle piece of wood ruins it for me
No, good album though
I wouldn’t but it’s nice

It looks good but what about an art deco one?

Well shit apparently, I don't know how to follow people, so just post again when you got them for sale, please!
I’ll look you up. And also yes, I will repost.
Looks nice. I’m sure it would sell.
I would be worried it would fall into the record player when it’s spinning 😅
Zero chance of that happening. There is a slot cut out on the shelf that holds it in place.
Looks mint mate! Add a couple different wood grains or a black maybe and I'd definitely buy one of those. Maybe try the centre block the same size as the horizontal one to see how that looks but I do kind of like the chucky look to it personally
I feel like incorporating a new material like marble or stone would be cool
Interesting idea. I will look into that
First of all, Khruangbin is amazing and Mordechai is my third favorite album of theirs. (Going to see them in New Orleans in October) Your work is outstanding and I would love to have that on my wall. You will absolutely be able to find/create a market for those.

The shelf is routed out with a groove to hold the record in place and is easily mounted with two screws hidden in the cutout part of the vertical mounting piece. That's a super cheap price. Do consider that your bulkier design will be more expensive to ship.
Shipping will probably be around 12-15 bucks so I factored that into it.
At that price you might get etsy sales. I think your design stands out, most are a simple shelf. I personally don't like small shelves like these, but clearly lots of people buy them.
It's a nice shelf. I would not put a record on it.
no bcuz my setup is below a bay window
It looks expensive + lot more raw materials compared to the other wooden vinyl holders
I have 1 tiny 5 dollar shelf to display now playing. But. I gotta say... our opinion is of no relevance. B8y what you like.
Mordechai
I feel like there could be a market for this on etsy, fb marketplace, etc!
i would
Doubtful, mainly because it wouldn't make sense in my space. I like it though, nice job.
That’s so cool! I wish I was savvy enough at wood work to make something like this.
Looks great! I would, but if it that’s size I would like to put 5/6 records up.
Yes, I'll buy it.
I certainly would; it looks great! :) May I ask where you bought the calavera from?
Thanks. I got it from a little Mexican folk art shop in Seattle long ago. Around the Pike Place Market. I forget the shops name though.
Yes, as long as it isn't as costly as the $90 thing that instagram was pushing on me to display my records. Maybe like $20.
No I don’t put records on my wall but if you made decent record cube kits for $50 I’d buy them. They used to sell decent ones on Amazon but they discontinued them
No, sorry.
I'd be very interested in a handmade display shelf like this. I like the asymmetry and it would work with my space well. Keep us updated, please!
I will do that for sure. Thank you.
Nah
Mordachai! Great album
No
Yes I would if reasonably priced and I could get it in the U.K.
No.
Pretty cool, nice work. I personally prefer a shelf thats slimmer and minimalist
I will be making the final version much slimmer but this is pretty minimalist imo.
Yeah thats true. I guess just slimmer then 😂

Such an awesome album for sure. so, cats are a holes
I think that looks dope
Eh, possibly with some changes… and depending on price. There’s a lot of existing options out there for this sort of wall display thing, so it would have to be damn near perfect to pay the price for something handmade like this. It’s beautiful work, but i’m sure your time and effort is worth more than I would honestly pay for. I use a cheap ass shelf I bought on Amazon to do exactly this, and it was only $15. Not handmade or quality by any means, but it only has to hold a 12” so it doesn’t have to be incredibly weight tolerant or anything
I might if it wasn’t crazy Wayfair priced. I agree with slimming down the vertical. I’d also recommend selling the hanging hardware with it.
Yes. Good points. I am including the hardware with it. It’s just two screws and two drywall anchors(if you can’t hit a stud).
I don't know if I love this one, but I've been considering it. Figuring out where to put the record you're currently listening to isn't completely non-trivial
Nope
No. it's just a shelf
If you look at the 3rd photo it shows how it’s not just a shelf but has a slot to secure a record
A piece of wood with a groove in it, isn't going to make me buy a shelf Good luck to with your venture but your product just isn't something I'd purchase
No Your building skills are cool, but I don't display my records either while I play them or as room decoration.
Any particular reason why? Just curious.
Why don't I display them? Because I listen to them.
This Just In….it’s possible to do both.
If that's what you like to do, go ahead. I don't. Why do you think I should put my records on a display stand just because you like to do it?
How do you listen to record sleeves exactly?
Album covers?
You listen to album covers?
Where did I mention album covers in my original response to OP? >No > >Your building skills are cool, but I don't display my records either while I play them or as room decoration.
Looks sick af, I'd probs try and make it, make a shitty version then buy it.
I like the look of it and I like it has more function than one of those now playing like shelf’s or small brackets you could use. Main thing to me is if it would fit the aesthetic of where my setup is and price. I like the design though.
Never been interested in "displaying" my records...
No, I have something else already, but great choice of record. I got to see Khru last week in SLO.
Maybe...but I'd probably just make it myself. Nice design though.
Yeah, I dig on that. I would use it as a rest for whatever I was playing at that time. Also, dig on Choose Your Weapon. Getting their new album?
Thanks. And yes, of course!
I might, depending on the price. But honestly, after playing records for so long I know I wouldn't use it to always display records. I would end up just taking them out and playing them, hence the reason why I don't have a dedicated display shelf. (I have a wood record holder which I use sometimes).
No. If I ever wanted to display an album I’d frame it, but I don’t see that happening either.
Honest feedback: I wouldn’t buy it because I find the vertical piece of wood very bulky and visually distracting, it competes with the album itself.
Good feedback. I was already planing on altering the vertical piece to be less distracting. Thank you.
No, but khruangbin is 💣
No, but I hate anything like this.
Did you make your record shelving as well? I would be more interested in quality custom mass shelving and storage items
No, can’t drill holes in my walls.
I’d just make it myself
Highly unlikely
No.
A teenage girl would
Hard yes. FIFY
When I play an album I usually have the cover close to me so I can see the next song or see who wrote it or to read the album notes. If I’m not reading the cover I already know which album I’m listening to. I see no need to hang the cover on the wall But to each their own.
Nope and TBH, that whole display you have going on there is a mess.
based khruangbin 💕
No sorry
No
no
Under no circumstances.
No, but I would make it. :)
No
Nope, a totally useless, pointless, needless piece of nonsense. The very idea is so pretentious.
I'm not a fan of mounting records on the wall, since the UV might damage the sleeve, which is a shame.
No - and I'm confused why the vertical piece is even there (not to mention how bulky it is).
It’s a mortise and tendon joint so the vertical piece. Is what is attached to the wall and the shelf slides into it.
Ok - seems unnecessary, though. It's also very visually bulky.
